Loved the 1983 show yesterday! Highlights for me include Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, Duran Duran, Quiet Riot, The Police, Peter Schilling, Huey Lewis & The News, .38 Special, and of course my favorite song on the chart, LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD!

They're playing the 12/13/80 show right now on Sirius/XM 80's on 8 (which means they also played it last weekend at noon). That's great except for the fact that the also played a 1980 show the previous weekend! It's one thing that they played most of the songs last week, but what's worse for me is that I just can't stand the majority of songs from that year. I mean, playing the 12/13/80 episode this weekend or last makes perfect sense; playing a show from the same year (11/15 to be exact) the previous weekend does not. I guess I'll tune in for the top 10 when Casey gets to "(Just Like) Starting Over" to hear how he addresses Lennon's murder (though, I can't imagine how sad that'll be to hear), but other than that, forgive me if I turn my attention to the Giants-Cowboys game.

Just listened. The answer is no. I was disappointed. How an you play the AT40 from December 13, 1980 and not include the "replacement" stuff?

I wonder if the reason it wasn't mentioned was because the show was usually recorded on Mondays, and thus they recorded the show the same day that Lennon was shot.

The AT40 show (12/13/1980) that you heard on SIRIUS/XM was indeed recorded before Lennon was killed (you will notice how upbeat Casey sounded in the intro/outro of "(Just Like) Starting Over"). The next day (12/9) they had to redo #4 and an earlier listener question on posthumous #1 hits was cut from the replacement disk. The result was a replacement disk that they added in addition to the full show. However not all AT40 affiliates aired Casey's tribute to Lennon. Both the original and updated versions of the 12/13/1980 show can be found here: radioinsight.com/boards/index.phpt=msg&th=16568&start=0&rid=0&S=e5b5c1c998cb38ab3dc4000c8e7b8ba0

Here's a better link: radioinsight.com/When you get there, go to "hobbyists" and then "Aircheck Collectors" and look for the thread that reads "American Top 40 - December 13, 1980 (XM)".

December 26, 1987 40 -- Salt 'N Pepa - Push It (19) 39 -- Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done to Deserve This? (2) 38 -- Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (14) 37 36 The Kane Gang - Motortown (36) 36 -- Stryper - Honestly (23) 35 40 Men Without Hats - Pop Goes the World (20) 34 39 Paul Carrack - Don't Shed a Tear (9) 33 -- Foreigner - Say You Will (6) 32 34 New Order - True Faith (32)31 37 Natalie Cole - I Live For Your Love (13) AT40 Extra: John Cougar Mellencamp "Small Town", as the song that inspired a station DJ (WBCM? WFCM? something like that) from Chilicocca (sp?), Ohio to ask on-air why Mellencamp never played small towns. Mellencamp would later play a double show there after the townspeople put together a petition, signed it, and sent it to him. Flashback Extra: Cher "I Found Someone"30 35 Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love (9) 29 12 Richard Marx - Should've Known Better (3) 28 10 Sting - We'll Be Together (7) 27 28 Laura Branigan - The Power of Love (26) 26 31 Roger - I Want to Be Your Man (3) 25 32 Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes (4) LDD: Kenny Rogers "Through the Years" from a woman in New Jersey to her husband of 3 years who had also been her college sweetheart24 19 Michael Bolton - That's What Love is All About (19) 23 26 Prince - I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (10) 22 27 Icehouse - Crazy (14) 21 17 Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - (I've Had) The Time of My Life (1) 20 23 Expose - Seasons Change (1) 19 21 Def Leppard - Animal (19)18 22 Heart - There's the Girl (12) 17 07 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth (1) 16 24 Tiffany - Could've Been (1) 15 20 The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter (2) 14 14 Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) (14)13 18 Elton John - Candle in the Wind (6) 12 15 Taylor Dayne - Tell it to My Heart (7) 11 09 Steve Winwood - Valerie (9) 10 16 INXS - Need You Tonight (1) 09 13 John Cougar Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb (8) LDD: Terry Jacks "Seasons in the Sun" from a woman named Dale to her mother for never losing faith in her, despite her previous drug habits08 08 Pretty Poison - Catch Me (I'm Falling) (8)07 11 Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel (1) 06 06 Jody Watley - Don't You Want Me (6)05 04 Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love (4) 04 05 George Harrison - Got My Mind Set on You (1) 03 02 Whitesnake - Is This Love (2) 02 03 Whitney Houston - So Emotional (1) 01 01 George Michael - Faith (1)NOTES: - I kind of wonder why Casey mentioned the "Small Town" story so soon, given that "Cherry Bomb" was later on the countdown. Yeah, it made a nice segueway into "Small Town" as an extra, but still, it's not like he needed an excuse to play Mellencamp that week.
- Shortened: "The Time of My Life", "Animal" (both went straight from second verse to end chorus), "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Cherry Bomb" (second verse skipped)
- Come to think of it, it seems kinda sketchy to shorten "Cherry Bomb" that week.

I didn't get to hear this weekend's show, but it's no big loss as I've heard that 1987 show before. Besides, I heard a SMASH 1984 show on XM earlier!

^ So that's what all that color coding stood for! Your early show postings got confusing to read because I couldn't figure out what stood for what (aside from bold = at peak).

Happy New Year!!
This weekend on "AT40: The '80s" will spotlight 1/23/1982.
Four songs debuted on the survey this week: "Abacab" - Genesis (#40) "Somewhere Down The Road" - Barry Manilow (#39) "Sea Of Love" - Del Shannon (#38) "Open Arms" - Journey (#29)
Falling off the chart this week: "Oh No" - The Commodores (played as one of the optional extras this week) "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" - The Police "Steal The Night" - Stevie Woods "Our Lips Are Sealed" - The Go-Gos
If you haven't listened to this countdown yet (WMGA in Huntington, West Va. got an early start playing the show on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day), please listen to "Hooked On Classics" (#11) as Casey Kasem identifies all the symphonies being played.
No regular countdown on "AT40: The '70s" This week as they feature the Top 40 Acts of The 70s ... So Far (originally ran on 7/6/1974).

Starting the year off with January 23, 1982?? Now that's just screwy.

Here's what AT40 might have had if they had a regular show on 7/6/1974 (First, as an added bonus, here's the Billboard Top 40 chart for 6/29 - AT40 hastily guessed which songs would be on the chart because Casey had to film an episode of Hawaii Five-O; only #1, #2 and #34 on that chart were correct):

- Did Casey always count Billboard's frozen chart week towards weeks on American Top 40? At #34, Casey announced this was Sneaker's 6th week in the 40, when in fact it was only the 5th week if you take out Billboard's frozen week. Billboard Top 40 run: 39-37-(37)-37-36-34. (Yes, it dropped the following week!) Note that this (obviously) also affects Foreigner and ONJ.
- Random factoid: Casey announced "Open Arms" as jumping from 57 to 29 this week.
- This week is the first time I've ever heard WCRZ play all four Flashback extras. This effectively means
45 49 songs were crammed into this, and yet the show not only started a couple minutes past eight, but also ended at 5 minutes to midnight. How about that?

Casey did include frozen weeks apparently.
I think it was either the 12/17/1983 or 12/24/1983 show when Casey began listing droppers from the previous week. I listened to the 12/10/1983 show on SIRIUS/XM and did not hear droppers mentioned but Casey did mention droppers on the 12/24/1983 show. FYI, in the early days of AT40 (1970-'71) Casey also began the show by naming droppers from the previous week.
"867-5309/Jenny" debuted on the Hot 100 that week but "We Got The Beat" actually did not debut until the following week (I don't have access to Billboard's Hot 100 Charts as I can't afford them; Somebody on the AT40 group mentioned it). Ed McMann simply said "We Got The Beat" debuted in January (no specific date) 1982. BTW it was mentioned on the AT40 board that KQLL also played all four op extras as well. I track the op extras every week on the AT40 board. Maybe more PDs of subscribing stations realize the vitalness of the op extras perhaps?

Oh, OK. I just assumed that "We Got the Beat" debuted that week as well since that's usually what justifies a non-dropping extra.

As mentioned earlier, "Our Lips Are Sealed" dropped off the Top 40 on 1/23/82. Interesting that Premiere still chose "We Got The Beat" though.
