NOTES:

• I'm pretty irritated at the production of this week's show...six of my favorites (Mandolin Rain, I Wanna Go Back, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, Big Time, Someday, Land of Confusion) were all shortened this week! >:( The last three weren't shortened as much...but still. And really, what's the point of making a song an Extra if you're only going to shorten it?
  
• Story of Green's disappearance: Mellencamp gave Green a co-writing credit on "Hurts So Good", which set up a 50-50 split of royalties. After it became the huge hit that it was, it was discovered that Green had disappeared - phone number disconnected, no forwarding address. Mellencamp put the word out that he was looking for Green, and some time later Green was located, in Nashville. Green hadn't been listening to pop radio at all, and thus had no idea that "Hurts So Good" had become huge...but he certainly was happy to find that out! Green and Mellencamp went on to co-write many songs on Mellencamp's albums Uh-Huh and Scarecrow. (Upon researching, singles from those two albums that were co-written were "Crumblin' Down" and "Rain on the Scarecrow". Later co-written singles were "Human Wheels", "Key West Intermezzo", and "Your Life is Now".)
  
• Casey declared "Hurts So Good" as Mellencamp's biggest hit, basing that off of all the weeks it spent in the Top 40.
  
• What made Casey decide to go with three LDD's in the show for a time, I wonder? (Note to jdelachjr: The "old radio shows" website does not have "Heaven", the first LDD, listed.)
  
• A shockingly low number of songs at their peak positions this week...only two! I wonder if that's a record? That said, on 2/14, NINE songs would hit their peaks. ("Without Your Love", "Caught Up in the Rapture", "Stay the Night", "Stop to Love", "Nobody's Fool", "We're Ready", "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)", "Change of Heart", and "Livin' on a Prayer")

On the Old Radio Shows link, it was the closest playlist I could find because Charis did not have a cue sheet available. Next time I will use Charis for links if they are available. Some of the corresponding Old Radio Shows links in recent weeks have proven to be inaccurate.

Btw this was one rare instance when Casey Kasem did not list songs that fell off the Top 40 the previous week. Casey had the droppers as a regular feature as early as December 1983 (?). This did not include 1970-'71 shows when Casey listed droppers at the beginning of the show.

(A) stands for ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
(B) stands for BMI, Broadcast Music Inc.

These two companies are called performance rights organizations and among their functions is to act as the middleman between songwriters and the people who make money from their music. They collect royalties and then distribute them to the songwriters.

Back in the day when these programs were broadcast, radio stations were compelled to keep logs of the songs they played, and pay a set rate to the appropriate agency for each playing. The listing on the cue sheets was a courtesy by the AT40 staff to prevent someone at each radio station from having to look up 40-50 songs each week (including, you'll note, the theme song).

Someone who works in radio can best answer this, but I believe radio stations now play flat fees and don't have to keep logs.

Occasionally, you'll see others listed on the cue sheets such as SESAC (U.S), CAPAC (Canada), STIM (Sweden), PRS (UK), GEMA (Germany) and SACEM (France).

( ) would likely mean that the AT40 staff didn't have that information at hand when the cue sheet was typed up. Most likely, those are records in their first or second weeks on the top 40 chart.

Well, the foreign agencies are listed when they're known. The country isn't listed, just the licensing agency. It's possible for a Swedish writer to belong to ASCAP or BMI.

Take this week's countdown (March 13, 1982)... next to Chilliwack's "I Believe" and Bob & Doug McKenzie's "Take Off" -- both records are written by Canadians -- (PRO) is listed... that stands for PROCAN, one of two Canadian rights agencies at the time (CAPAC was the dominant one at the time)... they have since been superseded by SOCAN.

On the 1984 countdown you refer to, five of the six songs you noted (according to the Publisher-Licensee listing under that week's Hot 100 chart) have no licensing agency listed, hence the blanks. The sixth, "Livin' In Desparate Times" was co-written by two people who belonged to different agencies, which leads to the listing (A&B)

On this week's March 13, 1982, cue sheet, only one record falls into this nonlisted category, the Go-Go's "We Got The Beat" and that is denoted by (N/L) or "not listed"... unless someone who worked on the show can say differently, I'd guess the difference between ( ) or (N/L) can be traced simply as a different person typed up the cue sheet.

And again, remember, this was probably just a courtesy by the AT40 staff... it was up to the radio stations to report what was played on their airwaves, not a syndicator.

You might note that the original cue sheets from the early days of AT40 (the early 70s) had no such listings. Looks like somewhere during the summer of 1976 they started listing the licensing agency. Possibly, and maybe Pete Battistini or Rob Durkee can speak to this, one or more of the affiliates suggested that those notations be added to the cue sheets.

Depends. I don't think that "I Found Someone" can be just as uptempo enough if you know what I mean.

Oh no, it's not that...I'd consider "I Found Someone" to be a midtempo. A LDD coming after a midtempo doesn't feel that odd. (Although, I've noticed them positioning a LDD following an uptempo anyway, "Dead Dog" blow-up notwithstanding.)

No, I find the clash to be more in subject matter. With Ryan's story you have his father having left him when he was 4 years old, and his dedication is "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word". One can interpret that as him crying out to his father, asking what can he do since he's long gone, and does his father love him?. That kind of sadness and hurt, coming right after the happiness expressed in "I Found Someone"...it's like going from very happy to very sad right away.

That was to be my original response. Then:

Then again, I took a closer look at the lyrics to "I Found Someone" (I hadn't been paying that close attention when it played), and that song seems to tell a story of someone leaving, too...only with the addition of hoping that she's found someone to take it away. Hmmm...maybe there wasn't such a clash after all.

I just finished listening to the 3/20/82 episode on Sirius/XM, and amazingly this song was an LDD on that episode too. This time it was from a high school drug counselor thanking her daughter for not doing drugs. I guess that could only happen when the song in question is currently charting, but I'm stunned nonetheless that they did use the same song in consecutive shows for the dedication.

Looking at the 3/13 chart, I'm pissed I missed out on "Harden My Heart" and "I Can't Go For That." Especially the latter, falling from 7 to 20 to out of the top 40, and with no recurrent rule to kick it out. I mean, that seems insane to me. Well, I guess it's off to Youtube for me.
