Thank you for posting these every week, but how is putting in new optional extras screwing AT40 fans? When it's for shows that aren't likely to be heard on a good number of affiliates, those who want to record the extras are screwed because it limits their options as far as which stations play the optionals and which don't and whenever 1979 gets featured as the "A" show (I've also noticed that 1979 always seems to get the "A" show designation even if it has already been played before - and I failed to note it was played already but I thought it was new), pretty much 99% of affiliates will opt for 1979 be it three or four hour versions. Such affiliates now apparently include WMGN (Madison, WI) which in both May and June played three hour 1979 shows. Until now they wouldn't play incomplete AT40s so long as they had a regular alternative; the only times they aired 1978-79 shows that were originally four hours was in November and December when Christmas countdowns were the only other options. (Last week they also played the 1971 A, another break with recent practice.)

I like the 70's & 80's AT40 shows & wish that the Shadoe Stevens shows could be listened to also.

I usually try Australian station KLFM that plays them Fridays at 10PM Eastern but they went with the final 3 hours of 1979 too.

I'll preview this weekend's shows soon but I'll add this about 1974. Only one station I know of aired the show - KXGL yesterday morning. The "Sure As I'm Sittin' There" extra sadly was not played and I doubt it ever aired anywhere else.
From a source, the Three Dog Night extra was added due to the death of "Humble Harve" Miller who subbed for Casey two weeks after this countdown (completing Casey's absence to film an episode of the original "Hawaii Five-O") so sadly if the 6/29/1974 show gets played again - even as an "A" show - Premiere will probably have to use another extra for Hour #2.
I did get a copy of said extra. If I have time, I might post it later in the week.

Here are this weekend's scheduled shows. There is one 'regular '70s show planned and two regular '80s shows so again my weekend preview will be a two-part posting. I'll start first with the '70s. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 7/10/1976 which aired in 2010 and in 2015. Here is my repost from 2015. Four songs debuted that week: "Something He Can Feel" - Aretha Franklin (#35) "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" - Lou Rawls (#37) "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel (Part I)" - Tavares (#39) "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" - England Dan & John Ford Coley (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 that week: "I Want You" - Marvin Gaye (#22) "Takin' It To The Streets" - The Doobie Brothers (#23) "That's Where The Happy People Go" - The Trammps (#29) "Movin'" - Brass Construction (#34) Biggest Mover: "I Need To Be In Love" - The Carpenters (#38 to #29) Biggest Dropper: "Get Up and Boogie (That's Right)" - The Silver Convention (#7 to #19) Original extras: "Whole Lotta Love" - Led Zeppelin This song will be played as one of the optional extras Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" - Elton John & Kiki Dee (#46) Hour #2: "Baby I Love Your Way" - Peter Frampton (#48) Hour #3: "Whole Lotta Love" - Led Zeppelin (original AT40 extra) While I have no confirmation (if anybody can confirm here, it'd be welcome), the bonus show will continue the chronological #1 hits of the '70s (from "If You Leave Me Now" to "Three Times A Lady"). Unlike one of the regular '80s shows, optional extras should be the same Hour #1: "I'm In You" - Peter Frampton Hour #2: "Keep It Comin' Love" - KC & The Sunshine Band Hour #3: "Nobody Does It Better" - Carly Simon Hour #4: "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" - Crystal Gayle '80s preview is coming up soon.

Now to conclude with the '80s regular shows and their special. The "A" show this week is from 7/4/1987 which aired back in 2015. Here is my repost from back then: Six songs debuted this week: "Moonlighting (Theme)" - Al Jarreau (#33) "Back In The High Life Again" - Steve Winwood (#36) "Luka" - Suzanne Vega (#37) "Flames Of Paradise" - Jennifer Rush & Elton John (#38) "Hearts On Fire" - Bryan Adams (#39) "Seven Wonders" - Fleetwood Mac (#40) Six songs fell off this week: "Jammin' Me" - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (#32) "Rock The Night" - Europe (#33) "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" - Glenn Medieros (#35) "I'll Still Be Loving You" - Restless Heart (#37) "With Or Without You" - U2 (#38) "Fascinated" - Company B (#40) Biggest Mover (tie): "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" - U2 (#24 to #17) "I Want Your Sex" - George Michael (#28 to #21) Biggest Dropper (tie): "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - Kim Wilde (#17 to #30) "The Lady In Red" - Chris DeBurgh (#22 to #35) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Heartlight" - Neil Diamond Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "La Bamba" - Los Lobos (#60) Hour #2: "Here I Go Again" - Whitesnake (#80; highest debut) Hour #3: "When Smokey Sings" - ABC (#86; debuted) Hour #4: "Who's That Girl?" - Madonna (NR) Seems kinda fitting Premiere chose the regular 7/4/1987 show after airing their scheduled special ("Top 40 Songs of the '80s So Far") during Memorial Day weekend. The "B" show this week is from 7/12/1980 which aired four other times already. Here is an edited repost from 2013. Six songs debuted this week: "Take A Little Rhythm" - Ali Thomson (#35) "Into The Night" - Benny Mardones (#36) "Old Fashion Love" - The Commodores (#37) "King Of The Hill" - Rick Pinette & Oak (#38) "Jo Jo" - Boz Scaggs (#39) "Make A Little Magic" - The Dirt Band (#40) Biggest Mover: "Emotional Rescue" - The Rolling Stones (#33 to #22) Biggest Dropper: "Cars" - Gary Numan (#17 to #29) Original Extras: "Tom Dooley" - The Kingston Trio "I'll Take You There" - The Staple Singers Long Distance Dedications: "We Are Family" - Sister Sledge "I Pledge My Love" - Peaches & Herb Archive extras: "Teen Angel" - Mark Dinning "Theme From 'A Summer Place'" - Percy Faith "Stuck On You" - Elvis Presley Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Lookin' For Love" - Johnny Lee (#67; highest debut) Hour #2: "Boulevard" - Jackson Browne (#53) Hour #3: "Drivin' My Life Away" - Eddie Rabbitt (#55) Hour #4: "I'm Alright" - Kenny Loggins (#88; debuted) Hopefully things will be back to normal next week. I said it last week too but hopefully I mean it this time. Of note: Premiere replaced the "Who Shot J.R." extra - which was the Hour #1 op extra in its' 2013 and 2015 airings - with "Lookin' For Love" and unlike last weekend's Three Dog Night extra from 1974, it's not in memoriam as I'm pretty sure Johnny Lee is still alive (albeit said 1974 extra was kind of a stretch as far as remembering people go). The special this weekend is the Triathlon of Rock 'n Roll special from Fourth of July weekend back in 1988. At least those optional specials are same... Hour #1: "We Didn't Start The Fire" - Billy Joel Hour #2: "Another Day In Paradise" - Phil Collins Hour #3: "Batdance" - Prince Hour #4: Madonna medley Happy Holiday weekend everybody!!!

This is the Happy Days sitcom theme song they used after the original "Rock Around The Clock". I never knew this song actually charted on pop?

Okay, this weekend there are TWO '70s shows and TWO '80s shows so once again my weekend preview will be a two-parter. We'll start with the '70s first. The "A" show this week is from 7/15/1972 which aired back in 2012. Here is an edited repost: Three songs debuted this week: "I'm Still In Love With You" - Al Green (#30) "Gone" - Joey Heatherton (#36) "Motorcycle Mama" - Sailcat (#39) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Sylvia's Mother" - Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show (#29) "Living In A House Divided" - Cher (#30) "How Can I Be Sure" - David Cassidy (#32) Biggest Mover: "Hold Her Tight" - The Osmonds (#39 to #24) Biggest Dropper: "Amazing Grace" - The Pipes and Drums of the Military Band of the Royal Scot Dragoon Guards (#21 to #40) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Iko Iko" - Dr. John (NR) Hour #2: "Everybody Plays The Fool" - Main Ingredient (#94; debuted) Hour #3: "Beautiful Sunday" - Daniel Boone (#58) Note: Premiere replaced The Rolling Stones' "Happy" as the Hour #1 extra with "Iko Iko" in tribute to Dr. John who died last month (at least Premiere waits for an "A" show to honor somebody unlike Humble Harve which we'll get to later). The "B" show for this week is from 7/15/1978. Here is my repost from 2015. Three songs debuted this week: "Prove It All Night" - Bruce Springsteen (#35) "Love Or Something Like It" - Kenny Rogers (#38) "I've Had Enough" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#40) Three songs fell off this week: "Because The Night" - Patti Smith Group (#19) "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" - Tuxedo Junction (#32) "You're The Love" - Seals & Crofts (#40) Biggest Mover: "Hot Blooded" - Foreigner (#30 to #20) Biggest Dropper (tie): "You're The One That I Want" - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John (#14 to #33) "Love Is Like Oxygen" - Sweet (#15 to #34) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Love Is In The Air" - John Paul Young (#78; debuted) Hour #2: "You Needed Me" - Anne Murray (#88; debuted) Hour #3: "Kiss You All Over" - Exile (#72) '80s preview is coming soon.

BTW about the Three Dog Night extra recently. Since it was heard so little (if at all) in the United States, I took the liberties to posting it online for those who had an interest in hearing it. At least Premiere didn't add the Humble Harve-hosted AT40 from 7/13/1974 in memoriam like they had done with Dick Clark and Gary Owens in recent years. audiomack.com/song/jdelachjr2005/3dn62974I don't think Humble Harve is well known or remembered enough nationally to justify the Clark or Owens treatment. The only living 1970-88 AT40 guest hosts that are are probably Wink Martindale, Bob Eubanks, and Daryl Hall & John Oates (the first then-currently charting recording artists to guest host, setting a precedent for the Shadoe Stevens and Ryan Seacrest eras).

Would it have been so bad to get Humble Harve for one week? I'm not familiar with him but, given he was likely Casey's choice, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it. Here's a link to the scoped program on YouTube.

^Humble Harve shot and killed his wife. It’s probably best that they didn’t over-salute him.
