1988 was a killer year for music. Very few songs that I didn't like were on the chart. Even ballads from Debbie Gibson and The Jetts turned out to be my favs of that year.
The Hair/Glam Metal onslaught was starting to take form as future top 10 songs by Def Leppard and Poison made their debut this week.
"One More Try" one of my George Michael favs would go on to #1 in the following weeks.

Now to conclude the second half of this weekend's preview with the two '80s shows this weekend. The "A" show is from 8/21/1982 which aired in 2013. Here is my repost from back then. Four songs debuted this week: "You Can Do Magic" - America (#27) "Somebody's Baby" - Jackson Browne (#34) "Let Me Tickle Your Fancy" - Jermaine Jackson (#36) "Let Me Go" - Ray Parker Jr. (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me" - Juice Newton (#29) "Do I Do" - Stevie Wonder (#30) "I Found Somebody" - Glenn Frey (#31) "What Kind Of Fool Am I" - Rick Springfield (#36) Biggest Mover: "Jack And Diane" - John Cougar (Mellencamp) (#27 to #16) Biggest Dropper: "Personally" - Karla Bonoff (#19 to #35) Original extras: "My Sweet Lord" - George Harrison Long Distance Dedications: "I Love" - Tom T. Hall "Somewhere Down The Road" - Barry Manilow Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock Of Seagulls (#45) Hour #2: "Gloria" - Laura Branigan (#47) Hour #3: "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" - The Gap Band (#72) Hour #4: "The One You Love" - Glenn Frey (#87; debuted) The "B" show from this weekend is from 8/16/1986 which aired back in 2014. Here is an edited repost. Three songs debuted this week: "Walk This Way" - Dun D.M.C. featuring Aerosmith (#30) "Dreamtime" - Daryl Hall (#39) "Two Of Hearts" - Stacey Q (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Holding Back The Years" - Simply Red (#34) "Your Wildest Dreams" - The Moody Blues (#38) "Who's Johnny" - El DeBarge (#39) Biggest Mover (tie): "Take My Breath Away" - Berlin (#18 to #9) "Stuck With You" - Huey Lewis & The News (#33 to #24) Biggest Dropper: "Modern Woman" - Billy Joel (#17 to #37) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Just As I Am" - Air Supply "Truly" - Lionel Richie "You Are So Beautiful" - Joe Cocker Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Throwing It All Away" - Genesis (#54; highest debut Hour #2: "Heaven In Your Eyes" - Loverboy (#44) Hour #3: "Love Walks In" - Van Halen (#56) Hour #4: "When I Think Of You" - Janet Jackson (#46) Once again, Premiere feels they need to replace optional extras for "B" shows. In this case, Premiere replaces the original extra in Hour #1 ("All Cried Out") with "Throwing It All Away" even though Phil Collins and the other members of Genesis are all still alive. Even when I'm on vacation, Premiere loves to make my life a living hell.

^Hey, somebody's gotta say it: Toby Petty or someone in that company must think announcer Larry needs something new to do.

Just one show for both '70s and '80s this week so just one post for this weekend. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 8/27/1977 which last aired in 2010. Here is an edited repost. Four songs debuted this week: "It Was Almost Like A Song" - Ronnie Milsap (#35) "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" - Meco (#38) "Nobody Does It Better" - Carly Simon (#39) "Boogie Nights" - Heatwave (#40) Four songs fell off this week: "Da Doo Ron Ron" - Shaun Cassidy (#28) "Looks Like We Made It" - Barry Manilow (#35) "It's A Crazy World" - Mac McAnally (#37) "Sunflower" - Glen Campbell (#40) Biggest Mover: "Strawberry Letter 23" - Brothers Johnson (#23 to #10) Biggest Dropper: "You Made Me Believe In Magic" - Bay City Rollers (#10 to #33) Original extras: "Suspicious Minds" - Elvis Presley Usually extra songs would be cut by Premiere and used later as an optional extra but this song actually stays in the show especially since AT40 paid tribute to Elvis who had recently died. The live version of "Suspicious Minds" was played. So once again my weekend preview will be a two-part posting starting with the '70s and the Holiday specials first. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 8/31/1974 which originally aired in 2013. Here is my repost from back then: Three songs debuted this week: "Sugar Baby Love" - The Rubettes (#37) "Earache My Eye Featuring Alice Bowie" - Cheech & Chong (#39) "Can't Get Enough" - Bad Company (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Annie's Song" - John Denver (#28) "My Thang" - James Brown (#29) "Radar Love" - Golden Earring (#40) Biggest Mover: "I Honestly Love You" - Olivia Newton-John (#39 to #26) Biggest Dropper: "Waterloo" - Abba (#6 to #24) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Jazzman" - Carole King (#86; debuted) Hour #2: "Kings Of The Party" - Brownsville Station (#85; debuted) Hour #3: "One Hell Of A Woman" - Mac Davis (#41) And the Holiday specials for this weekend (which will be played on few stations) are the conclusion of the #1 Hits special of the '70s and the Top Newcomers of the '80s. Optional extras for both shows are unchanged... '70s #1 Hits Special (Finale): Hour #1: "Short People" - Randy Newman Hour #2: "Y.M.C.A." - The Village People Hour #3: "Dim All The Lights" - Donna Summer Hour #4: "After The Love Has Gone" - Earth, Wind & Fire '80s Newcomers special Hour #1: "Shadows Of The Night" - Pat Benatar Hour #2: Salute to Rap Music montage Hour #3: "For Your Eyes Only" - Sheena Easton Hour #4: "Keep On Loving You" - REO Speedwagon '80s preview is coming soon.
