I like the B shows better. Musically, so do I, (referring to the 1978 and 1985 offerings) though I usually don't bother with the B's: I often don't have time to search them out and spend three or four hours listening if I do. The A's I treat as the main events and the B's I generally only bother with if I happen to particularly like one of them, or just to pass the time. If we're now getting B's to 1975 A's, then presumably 1973 and 1974 will be paired with later 70s shows as well. From jdelach's post, it seems indeed that the only 70s standalones we might get going forward are 1976, 1977, and three hour 1978. I don't know how many affiliates think they really alternatives to shows from as late as 1975--lately most have almost always gone with the A's from as far back as 1970--but those that do may find themselves playing 1976-79 to death.

FWIW they actually did go with the "A" 1971 year-end countdown as opposed to the 1974 "B" the last two weekends.

Here is an edited repost from 2010: AT40: The '80s this week features 1/21/1984: Five songs debuted this week: "Wrapped Around Your Finger" - The Police (#31) "99 Luftballoons" - Nena (#33) "Jump" - Van Halen (#34) "Nightbird" - Stevie Nicks (#35) "Nobody Told Me" - John Lennon (#36; Hot 100 Debut) Five songs fell off this week: "Love Is A Battlefield" - Pat Benatar (#15) "Major Tom (Coming Home)" - Peter Schilling (#19) "Church Of The Poisoned Mind" - Culture Club (#27) "Cum On Feel The Noize" - Quiet Riot (#33) "Synchronicity II" - The Police (#37) Biggest Mover: "Baby I Lied" - Deborah Allen (#36 to #26) Biggest Dropper: "Uptown Girl" - Billy Joel (#14 to #40) Original Extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Endless Love" - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie "Hello Goodbye" - The Beatles Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "New Moon On Monday" - Duran Duran (#48) Hour #2: "Give It Up" - KC (#47) Hour #3: "I Want A New Drug" - Huey Lewis & The News (#54) Hour #4: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper (#45)

This weekend there is one '80s show and two '70s shows so once again my weekend preview will be a two-parter. I will start with the one '80s show first.
"AT40: The '80s" this week presents 2/20/1988 (first time 1988 is a singleton airing since 2014 so now only 1980-'82 need "B" shows). It previously aired in 2014.
Three songs debuted this week: "Twilight World" - Swing Out Sister (#34) "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" - Billy Ocean (#35) "Live My Life" - Boy George (#40)
Three songs fell off this week: "Candle In The Wind" - Elton John (#29) "Honestly" - Stryper (#38) "Crazy" - Icehouse (#39)
Biggest Mover (tie): "Out Of The Blue" - Debbie Gibson (#33 to #24) "Man In The Mirror" - Michael Jackson (#36 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" - Prince (#22 to #38)
Original extras: "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" - Wham!
Long Distance Dedications (only one): "You're The Inspiration" - Chicago
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "What A Wonderful World" - Louis Armstrong (#67; highest debut) Hour #2: "Girlfriend" - Pebbles (#42) Hour #3: "Some Kind Of Lover" - Jody Watley (#47) Hour #4: "Devil Inside" - INXS (#50)
My '70s preview is coming up next.

Here is a repost from back then: Three songs debuted this week: "Stumblin' In" - Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman (#37) "Knock On Wood" - Amii Stewart (#38) "Maybe I'm A Fool" - Eddie Money (#39) Three songs fell off this week: "Take Me To The River" - The Talking Heads (#29) "New York Groove" - Ace Frehley (#35) "You Can Do It" - Dobie Gray (#37) Biggest Mover: "Tragedy" - The Bee Gees (#19 to #6) Biggest Dropper: "September" - Earth, Wind & Fire (#11 to #35) Original extras: None BTW this was the first show in which AT40 began recapping the previous week's Top 3 songs. Long Distance Dedications: "You Should Be Dancing" - The Bee Gees "We Are The Champions" - Queen Archive extras: Hour #1: "Ben" - Michael Jackson Hour #2: "My Ding-A-Ling" - Chuck Berry Hour #3: "I Can See Clearly Now" - Johnny Nash Note: "My Ding-A-Ling" will be played as an optional extra. The other two Archive songs remain. Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "I Want Your Love" - Chic (#68) Hour #2: "My Ding-A-Ling" - Chuck Berry (original AT40 Archive extra) Hour #3: "Precious Love" - Bob Welch (#65) Hour #4: "Heart Of Glass" - Blondie (#75) BTW when Premiere aired 2/24/1979 as an "A" show back in 2017, they went with 2/16/1974 as the "B" show back then. Just saying.
