This weekend, there is finally one '70s and one '80s show this weekend so a single post for the weekend preview. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 4/2/1977. Here is an edited repost: Five songs debuted this week: "Can't Stop Dancing" - Captain & Tennille (#30) "Your Love" - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. (#32) "I'm Your Boogie Man" - KC & The Sunshine Band (#35) "Magical Mystery Tour" - Ambrosia (#39) "Angel In Your Arms" - Hot (#40) Five songs fell off this week: "Crackerbox Palace" - George Harrison (#19) "Boogie Child" - The Bee Gees (#20) "Here Come Those Tears Again" - Jackson Browne (#23) "Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann's Earth Band (#29) "Year Of The Cat" - Al Stewart (#30) Biggest Mover (tie): "When I Need You" - Leo Sayer (#35 to #21) "I Wanna Get Next To You" - Rose Royce (#36 to #22) Biggest Dropper: "Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac (#18 to #29) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Flowers On The Wall" - The Statler Brothers (NR) Hour #2: "Lonely Boy" - Andrew Gold (#57) Hour #3: "Disco Inferno" - The Trammps (#63) Of note: "Flowers On The Wall" replaces Alan O'Day's "Undercover Angel" from the 2016 and 2017 airings as the Hour #1 optional extra. Call me crazy but I don't think Casey ever played "Flowers On The Wall" (a 1966 hit) on any episode of AT40 I can recall. The '80s show for this week is from 4/7/1984. Here is my repost from 2012: Four songs debuted this week: "Holding Out For A Hero" - Bonnie Tyler (#35) "Show Me" - The Pretenders (#38) "No More Words" - Berlin (#39) "The Longest Time" - Billy Joel (#40) Four songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "New Moon On Monday" - Duran Duran (#18) "New Song" - Howard Jones (#27) "Let's Stay Together" - Tina Turner (#31) "Nobody Told Me" - John Lennon (#33) Biggest Mover: "They Don't Know" - Tracey Ullman (#25 to #15) Biggest Dropper: "Back Where You Belong" - .38 Special (#20 to #36) Original extras: "Start Me Up" - The Rolling Stones Long Distance Dedications: "Just The Way You Are" - Billy Joel "Fame" - Irene Cara Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Relax" - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (#84; debuted) Hour #2: "Borderline" - Madonna (#46) Hour #3: "Oh Sherrie" - Steve Perry (#47; highest debut) Hour #4: "Let's Hear It For The Boy" - Deniece Williams (#56; debuted)

Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Flowers On The Wall" - The Statler Brothers (NR) Hour #2: "Lonely Boy" - Andrew Gold (#57) Hour #3: "Disco Inferno" - The Trammps (#63) Of note: "Flowers On The Wall" replaces Alan O'Day's "Undercover Angel" from the 2016 and 2017 airings as the Hour #1 optional extra. Call me crazy but I don't think Casey ever played "Flowers On The Wall" (a 1966 hit) on any episode of AT40 I can recall.
You're not crazy, as if he ever did it wasn't in this show. This was originally a Book of Records segment about the Statler Brothers in which no song was played. Premiere's done this before for optional extras, using stories about artists or achievements not directly tied to anything on the chart and adding relevant songs that weren't there originally. Unfortunately making this an optional extra means we lose the best part of it IMO, that being Casey's tease: he originally previewed the Statler story by alluding to a country music group led by two brothers who named the act after a box of tissues: "The Kleenex Brothers? Details coming up."

BTW I don't see the regular AT40 chart (Damn April Fools). For summary, please list the droppers and debuts and who's at #1. I assume Seacrest is back this week after being off the previous two.

Semi-related question... My local station is one of the few that airs past Rick Dees 80's shows. Does anyone know how they select the year each week? Normally it's a different year each week. But last week they went with 1989, and this week they also went with 1989. (I know Rick doesn't have as many 80s years to pull from as Casey did since his show didn't start until Sept 1983... but still seems odd that they'd repeat the same year two weeks in a row).

I don't listen to these shows, but I've picked up a lot from various discussion forums. My understanding is that they pretty much only play shows from 1986-1989, with a rare 1985 show mixed in, and that they tend to repeat shows over and over rather than try to play everything the way Premiere does with classic AT40. Nobody knows why.

Let's give this thread a nice bump with this weekend's preview which is only one post since there's only one '70s and one '80s show this week. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 5/1/1976. Here is an edited repost: Five songs debuted this week: "Love In The Shadows" - Neil Sedaka (#34) "Love Really Hurts Without You" - Billy Ocean (#35) "I've Got A Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again)" - Al Wilson (#37) "Hurt" - Elvis Presley (#38) "Anytime (I'll Be There)" - Paul Anka (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Dream On" - Aerosmith (#16) "Money Honey" - Bay City Rollers (#21) "Lorelei" - Styx (#27) "Fopp" - Ohio Players (#30) "Golden Years" - David Bowie (#31) Biggest Mover: "Love Hangover" - Diana Ross (#29 to #10) Biggest Dropper: "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over The World)" - The Carpenters (#12 to #25) Original extras: "Blueberry Hill" - Fats Domino This song will be played as one of the optional extras Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "It's Now Or Never" - Elvis Presley (NR) Hour #2: "Takin' It To The Streets" - The Doobie Brothers (#48) Hour #3: "Blueberry Hill" - Fats Domino (original AT40 extra) Of note: Premiere has replaced Heart's "Crazy On You" - used in both the 2014 and 2019 airings - with "It's Now Or Never" as the Hour #1 extra. Don't ask me why. This is pretty much as random as using "Flowers On The Wall" as an op extra for the 4/2/1977 show a few weeks ago. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 4/30/1988. Here is my repost from 2011. Three songs debuted this week: "Together Forever" - Rick Astley (#36) "Ritual" - Dan Reed Network (#39) "We All Sleep Alone" - Cher (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Check It Out" - John Cougar Mellencamp (#28) "Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley (#35) "Going Back To Cali" - LL Cool J (#37) Biggest Mover: "Everything Your Heart Desires" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#38 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "Out Of The Blue" - Debbie Gibson (#19 to #33) Long Distance Dedications: "You Can Do Magic" - America "Mother And Child Reunion" - Paul Simon Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Nothin' But A Good Time" - Poison (#63) Hour #2: "Circle In The Sand" - Belinda Carlisle (#43) Hour #3: "The Flame" - Cheap Trick (#59) Hour #4: "Pour Some Sugar On Me" - Def Leppard (#75)

Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "It's Now Or Never" - Elvis Presley (NR) Hour #2: "Takin' It To The Streets" - The Doobie Brothers (#48) Hour #3: "Blueberry Hill" - Fats Domino (original AT40 extra) Of note: Premiere has replaced Heart's "Crazy On You" - used in both the 2014 and 2019 airings - with "It's Now Or Never" as the Hour #1 extra. Don't ask me why. This is pretty much as random as using "Flowers On The Wall" as an op extra for the 4/2/1977 show a few weeks ago.
The 5/1/76 show includes a story from Casey about the classic Italian song "O Sole Mio", written in 1898 and adapted into other songs through the years, including "There's No Tomorrow" in 1949 and "It's Now Or Never" in 1960. Originally it only had drop pieces of Enrico Caruso's "O Sole Mio", Tony Martin's "There's No Tomorrow", and Elvis' "It's Now or Never", but Premiere edited the full Elvis song in. It's similar to what was done with "Flowers On the Wall"; the original 4/2/77 countdown had Casey telling a "Book of Records" story about the Statler Brothers, but didn't include the song which Premiere added in as an optional extra.

...is one of the most lame-sounding songs ever. Can't blame Premiere for tossing it, and Ken Martin, likely agreeing with them, was happy to concoct something from "...Shame," which has a better backstory (Fats Domino song of which many stations couldn't conscionably play the original), to insert in its place.

Okay, for Memorial Day weekend there will be one regular '70s and one regular '80s show but this weekend will still be a two-part post for reasons that will be explained. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 5/29/1976. Here is a partial repost from 2016: Four songs debuted this week: "Moonlight Feels Right" - Starbuck (#34) "Kiss And Say Goodbye" - The Manhattans (#36) "Crazy On You" - Heart (#37) "Still Crazy After All These Years" - Paul Simon (#40) Four songs fell off this week: "Happy Music" - The Blackbyrds (#19) "Let Your Love Flow" - The Bellamy Brothers (#23) "I've Got A Feeling (We'll Be Seeing Each Other Again)" - Al Wilson (#29) "Come On Over" - Olivia Newton-John (#36) Biggest Mover (tie): "I'll Be Good To You" - Brothers Johnson (#30 to #38) "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" - Eric Carmen (#32 to #40) Biggest Dropper: "Boogie Fever" - The Sylvers (#4 to #13) Original extras: "Tossin' And Turnin'" - Bobby Lewis "The Twist" - Chubby Checker Of note: When Premiere last aired this show in 2016, both "Tossin' And Turnin'" and "The Twist" remained in the show. This time, both will be optional extras. Here is the op extra lineup (which in itself needs some explanation): Hour #1: "Casey talks about 'Waltzing Matilda' by Jimmie Rodgers" (that's what it says on the cue sheet) Hour #2: "Tossin' And Turnin'" - Bobby Lewis (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "The Twist" - Chubby Checker (original AT40 extra) For the record, Premiere dropped all these 2016 op extras which were in order "Young Hearts Run Free" by Candi Staton, "The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy and "Get Closer" by Seals & Crofts. Not one of them are staying this time. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 5/30/1987. Here is my repost from 2014: Seven songs debuted this week: "Point Of No Return" - Expose (#32) "Something So Strong" - Crowded House (#33) "Shakedown" - Bob Seger (#35) "Every Little Kiss" - Bruce Hornsby & The Range (#36) "Sweet Sixteen" - Billy Idol (#37) "Endless Nights" - Eddie Money (#38) "I'll Still Be Loving You" - Restless Heart (#40) Seven songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "The Right Thing" - Simply Red (#27) "Get That Love" - Thompson Twins (#32) "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" - Aretha Franklin & George Michael (#34) "Sign O' The Times" - Prince (#35) "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" - Starship (#37) "What's Going On" - Cyndi Lauper (#38) "Serious" - Donna Allen (#40) Biggest Mover: "Alone" - Heart (#39 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "Talk Dirty To Me" - Poison (#10 to #24) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Stand By Me" - Ben E. King "Let It Be" - The Beatles Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Never Say Goodbye" - Bon Jovi (NR) Hour #2: "Girls, Girls, Girls" - Motley Crue (#68; debuted) Hour #3: "Heart And Soul" - T'Pau (#48) Hour #4: "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" - Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine (#66; highest debut) At least Premiere is not changing the op extra lineup for this week's '80s show... My next post will preview the Memorial Day specials.

Now to preview the Memorial Day specials.
The "AT40: The '70s" special will repeat the Chronological #1 Hits of the '70s and this time it will air in three-hour parts rather than four-hour ones.
Optional extras are... Hour #1: "What's Going On" - Marvin Gaye Hour #2: "We've Only Just Begun" - The Carpenters Hour #3: "Never Can Say Goodbye" - The Jackson Five
"AT40: The '80s" special will be the Top 40 Newcomers of the '80s special that has aired multiple times.
Optional extras are... Hour #1: "Shadows Of The Night" - Pat Benatar Hour #2: Salute to Rap Music of the 1980's Hour #3: "For Your Eyes Only" - Sheena Easton Hour #4: "Keep On Loving You" - REO Speedwagon
But that's not all. Now we get to the reason I need two posts for this weekend's preview. Premiere has thrown in an AT40 episode from 5/23/1998. This is the second time Premiere has offered a regular '90s AT40 as a special airing (Premiere offered the 9/5/1998 show on Labor Day weekend last year)
Honestly, what Classic AT40 affiliate (other than maybe WPNC) will want to air this one?!?!?
Three songs debuted this week: "Ray Of Light" - Madonna (#30) "Never Ever" - All Saints (#39) "Stop" - The Spice Girls (#40)
Three songs fell off this week: "Brick" - Ben Folds Five (#34) "Let's Forget About It" - Lisa Loeb (#35) "Open Up Your Eyes" - Tonic (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Kind & Generous" - Natalie Merchant (#36 to #28) Biggest Dropper: "My Father's Eyes" - Eric Clapton (#24 to #35)
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Oh How The Years Go By" - Vanessa Williams "Wind Beneath My Wings" - Bette Midler "One Sweet Day" - Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men
Of note: For some reason Premiere does not list "One Sweet Day" on its' cue sheet but the other two LDDs are listed. Oversight?
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Closing Time" - Semisonic Hour #2: "You Mean The World To Me" - Toni Braxton (America's Top Hits) Hour #3: "Give Me One Reason" - Tracy Chapman (America's Top Hits) Hour #4: "The Boy Is Mine" - Brandy & Monica

Not one of them are staying this time If Premiere is going to devote a whole optional extra spot to the "Waltzing Matilda" story, then I guess they'll play the full song as well? This seems like another of their recent OE segments where they include a story about an oldie or artist that wasn't in the countdown, and then play a song that wasn't heard (at least not in full) originally. Unless Casey originally told a much longer story about it that was cut for time. Offering regular 90s countdowns as specials is a nice diversion, especially if it's a trial balloon to see what they can do with post-80s Casey shows. Unfortunately if few if any affiliates actually play it then it may not be judged worth the effort.

WXHC already has announced they will, at least, along with the other two decades' specials. They even altered the Premiere Casey AT40 logo so it reads "Casey Kasem's American Top 40: The 70s, 80s, and 90s". www.wxhc.com/at-40-specials/

But that's not all. Now we get to the reason I need two posts for this weekend's preview. Premiere has thrown in an AT40 episode from 5/23/1998. This is the second time Premiere has offered a regular '90s AT40 as a special airing (Premiere offered the 9/5/1998 show on Labor Day weekend last year) Honestly, what Classic AT40 affiliate (other than maybe WPNC) will want to air this one?!?!? WXHC already has announced they will, at least, along with the other two decades' specials. They even altered the Premiere Casey AT40 logo so it reads "Casey Kasem's American Top 40: The 70s, 80s, and 90s". www.wxhc.com/at-40-specials/Nice to see Ken Martin get acknowledged for the '70s special. Gotta remember to program WXHC next Monday (although you would think WPNC will probably air these shows on Monday too).
