This weekend and next, Classic AT40 will be having two '70s countdowns and two '80s countdowns. I'll cover both in one post so I can have next week off before going back to regular two-part postings.
The "A" shows are from the Top 80 of 1970. Optional extras are...
Part One Hour #1: "Look What They've Done To My Song Ma" - New Seekers Hour #2: "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine (Part 1)" - James Brown Hour #3: "I Think I Love You" - The Partridge Family
Part Two Hour #1: "My Sweet Lord" - George Harrison Hour #2: "Someday We'll Be Together" - Diana Ross & The Supremes Hour #3: Montage of all #1 songs of 1970
In Part One, "Look What They've Done To My Song Ma" replaces Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through The Jungle" from the 2012 airing (it will be included in the show as the B-side to "Up Around The Bend"). In Part Two, Premiere replaced Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' "Tears Of A Clown" and Aretha Franklin's "Call Me" with "My Sweet Lord" and the #1 montage.
The "B" countdown will be the Top 100 of 1977. Optional extras are...
Part One Hour #1: "Life In The Fast Lane" - The Eagles Hour #2: "How Deep Is Your Love" - The Bee Gees Hour #3: "You Make Loving Fun" - Fleetwood Mac Hour #4: Medley of #1 Songs
Part Two Hour #1: "Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love)" - Waylon Jennings Hour #2: "Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac Hour #3: "Star Wars" - John Williams & London Symphony Orchestra Hour #4: Medley Of #1 Songs
Note: Only one extra change from the 2017 airing. In Part One, Premiere replaced Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou" in Hour #3 with "You Make Loving Fun" presumably so the '70s can pay their respects to Christine McVie (she sang lead on this).
For the '80s, the "A" countdown is from the Top 100 of 1980. Optional extras are the same as the 2014 airing:
Part One: Hour #1: "More Than I Can Say" - Leo Sayer Hour #2: "Just Like (Starting Over)" - John Lennon Hour #3: "Pilot Of The Airwaves" - Charlie Dore Hour #4: "Lady" - Kenny Rogers
Part Two: Hour #1: "I'm Alive" - Electric Light Orchestra Hour #2: "Refugee" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Hour #3: "Any Way You Want It" - Journey Hour #4: "Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was A Fool)" - Foghat
The "B" countdown is from The Top 100 of 1986. Optional extras are the same from 2018.
Part One: Hour #1: "Walk Like An Egyptian" - The Bangles Hour #2: "Heaven In Your Eyes" - Loverboy Hour #3: "The Next Time I Fall" - Peter Cetera & Amy Grant Hour #4: "The Way It Is" - Bruce Hornsby & The Range
Part Two: Hour #1: "Twist And Shout" - The Beatles Hour #2: "Like A Rock" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Hour #3: "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" - Timbuk 3 Hour #4: "I Can't Wait" - Stevie Nicks
See you in two weeks.

For the Rick Dees show this week, they're recapping all the #1 hits from 1985. So first thought was obviously how are they going to fill a four hour show with just only the #1 hits? They started the show with the current 1986 hit from Whitney Houston, and are now sprinkling in a few #2 hits as well.
(Probably an easier show to put together too, since they didn't have to wait for the official year end rankings)

The interesting thing about the 1970 Yearend countdown is that Casey is playing songs that charted before the show started; which will be the first time around for him on less than half of the top 80s

The 1977 Yearend show part one regular is 03:19:13 The 1977 Yearend show part one Supersized is 03:24:12 adding on 5 minutes The 1977 Yearend show part two regular is 03:21:28 The 1977 Yearend show part two Supersized is 03:28:12 adding on 6 minutes 48 sec. But this one dropped a for a few on #40-39 so I had to replace that with the regular and I don't know how it affected the time.

You mean to tell me that people actually bought the record "Sister Mary Elephant" by Cheech and Chong. That's even worse than the one from the show played in the fall. 1974 was a really bad year for good music. The top 15 were all good songs and artists though.
Everything in the 1983 show is good.
It was nice hearing some Merle Haggard in 1974. WSQL messed up. They aired #7-3 from 1970 yearend and not this week. KLFM tonight plays the 70s A show.
Interesting that in the 1976 show, Casey spotlighted Johnny Ray. Is that who is mentioned in the Dexi Midnight Runner song "Come On Eileen"?

1/23/1971 Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin. I've heard that one before. Thor Ragnarok in the ending victory music.
Mr Bojangles - NGDB I didn't know that was that old. When did Sammy have his? It blipped at that one and then went into commercial early.
There was an act called "Chairman of the Board". and that was not Sinatra.
There is a Long distance dedication to me at #22. We Gotta Get you a woman.
Ray Price made #20 with "For the Good Times". Chicago #19
Did they start the 3rd hour at #13 and skip #14? After the filler music he did #13. I'll have to go back and check that. No, they ran #14 before the extra and the break contrary to what the cue sheet said. That said it was the first song after the break.
Will they have a David Crosby extra next week?

WWIS is cutting commercials. They are starting the 2nd hour at 53 minutes in. "853-5937" - Squeeze. Another phone number song. It didn't have the ring to it that 867-5309 had. The 2nd extra is "My Prerogative" - Bobby Brown. I remember listening in 1988 and Casey said the song is not My Perrogative as it is often pronounced, but the spelling is Prerogative. Salt and Pepa has Push it. While in 1971 Rufus Thomas had Do the Push and Pull.
1988 brings back the Tiffany or Debbie Gibson question. If only Taylor Swift was around back then to add to that.
WWIS quit on #2 & #1

"AT40: The '80s" this week presents 1/23/1988. Here is my repost from 2018: Now to conclude this weekend's preview with the two '80s shows The "A" show for this week is from 1/23/1988 The Rick Dees show selected for this weekend was also from 1988, although at least they used the one from 1/30/1988 so there was a tad more separation between the two. But listening to both shows, the most noticeable difference was Madonna's "Spotlight" - which was only released as a single in Japan. A number of US radio stations played the song anyway, so much so that it made it into top 40 airplay (peaking around #30 on Radio & Records, and #32 Billboard airplay). Since the Hot 100 had a longstanding rule at that time that only commercially released singles were eligible chart, the song was absent from American Top 40 while charting on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40. Obviously this issue became far more common later in the '90s when record labels stopped releasing singles commercially to try to get consumers to buy the whole album if they wanted the song.

Now to cover the two '70s shows. The "A" show for this week is from 2/1/1975. Here is an edited repost: Five songs debuted this week: "Lady Marmalade" - LaBelle (#36) "Roll On Down The Highway" - Bachman-Turner Overdrive (#37) "Ding Dong, Ding Dong" - George Harrison (38) "Don't Call Us We'll Call You" - Jerry Corbetta and Sugarloaf (#39) "Happy People" - The Temptations (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Junior's Farm" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#17) "The Entertainer" - Billy Joel (#35) "Angie Baby" - Helen Reddy (#36) "Ride 'Em Cowboy" - Paul Davis (#37) "Kung Fu Fighting" - Carl Douglas (#38) Biggest Mover: "I'm A Woman" - Maria Muldaur (#39 to #30) Biggest Dropper: "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" - Barry White (#18 to #33) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "I've Been This Way Before" - Neil Diamond (#73; debuted) Hour #2: "Hey You" - Bachman-Turner Overdrive (NR) Hour #3: "Have You Never Been Mellow" - Olivia Newton-John (#49) Of note: Premiere has replaced Paul McCartney & Wings' "Sally G" as the Hour #2 op extra in the 2015 and 2019 airings with "Hey You" likely in memory of drummer Robbie Bachman who died recently. The "B" show for this week is from 2/5/1977. Here is an earlier repost: Four songs debuted this week: "Carry On Wayward Son" - Kansas (#36) "Rich Girl" - Daryl Hall and John Oates (#38) "Moody Blue" - Elvis Presley (#39) "In The Mood" - Henhouse Five Plus Two (a.k.a. Ray Stevens) (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Whispering/Cherchez La Femme/Se Si Bon" - Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (#27) "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" - Elton John (#33) "I Never Cry" - Alice Cooper (#34) "It Keeps You Runnin'" - The Doobie Brothers (#37) Biggest Mover: "Boogie Child" - The Bee Gees (#38 to #25) Biggest Dropper: "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" - Leo Sayer (#4 to #15) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Crackerbox Palace" - George Harrison (#49) Hour #2: "Dreamboat Annie" - Heart (#42) Hour #3: "Don't Give Up On Us" - David Soul (#60) The optionals for 1977 are originally the same from prior airings but it's possible the recent death of David Crosby ("Just A Song Before I Go") could change things (I literally received the cue sheet the day after Crosby's death was reported but Premiere can change things and I don't get revisions so stay tuned).

Speaking of optional extras used to salute deceased musicians, Jeff Beck could have gotten that treatment in the 1985 show and I'm somewhat surprised he didn't. That year he was on the charts with the Honeydrippers (who are in the featured countdown), and also as the lead artist with "People Get Ready", on which Rod Stewart sang.

Casey, in the 2/5/1977 show, listed Convoy as a novelty song that hit #1
I object. Convoy is not a novelty song. It is more of a social/political protest song. Novelty songs are created to make people laugh.
Speaking of Novelty songs, what was that at #40? The Hen House 5 Plus 2. In the Mood by chicken voices. Never heard that before.

I asked WSQL on their Facebook page, "Will you be playing all 4 hours of AT40 from 2/10/1979 on Thursday?" since this is the first time that I've seen a 4 hour 'A' show. Many stations will have to make an adjustment or leave off the first hour.
First they gave an auto reply "thanks for your message. We are not here right now, but we'll get back to you soon!"
Then at 5am I got a strange message "You know on Thursday. Not permitted to record!" (Yeah, Right)
Then at 1pm I got this message "Good afternoon Steve, we do normally play all four hours when it is a 4 hour segment. It will begin at appx 6:05, after the last Newscast of the day. Thank you for listening!"
Thanks to the afternoon person for being nice and understanding.
