The "A" show for this week is from 5/1/1971 (didn't Sirius XM already air this countdown last week?) No, they aired April 24th, with the Harry Belafonte extra intact fortunately. I’m kind of amazed they’re airing May 1st as a A show since it’s one of 3 shows with the war criminal ballad in the top 40. (tho I’m not at all against it) |

How many times has this happened?
The 5/1/1971 chart had Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" at #4
The 5/9/1987 chart had Cyndi Lauper's remake of "What's Goin On" at #12.
We got to hear both versions on the same weekend, which would mean they would have had to have released them at the same time of year.

Puzzled over the playing of the 1984 show as a standalone, as the exact same show (except for one changed optional extra) was also played by itself just last year, and Premiere has in recent years usually waited at least three years to repeat an A or standalone show, though they can be offered as B's sooner after. And we just got 1984 by itself four weeks ago. (Next week we're supposed to hear 1985, which hasn't been the A in over three months.)

Premiere offered a last minute replacement of Don Henley's "Not Enough Love in the World" with Tina Turner's "Private Dancer". Not all stations downloaded the replacement though. Premiere offered a last minute replacement of Don Henley's "Not Enough Love in the World" with Tina Turner's "Private Dancer". Not all stations downloaded the replacement though. Thanks. I was able to get recordings with "Private Dancer" in it. Funny that Tina Turner dies midweek and Premiere is quick to change extras for her while Gordon Lightfoot died on a Monday and Premiere had 1971 for an "A' show (If You Could Read My Mind) and 1976 for a "B" show (The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald) and did not change extras for either show. |

...Of note: Premiere has replaced Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Just A Song Before I Go" (which you will recall Premiere already played as an optional extra for a 1977 "B" show earlier this year due to David Crosby's recent death) with "Rebel Rouser" which again feels like Premiere trying to fix something that wasn't really broken to begin with. ... Interestingly, this optional extra was presented as if it were an original extra from this very show, with Casey introducing it as such. But, if "Rebel Rouser" was ever played in its entirety on any AT40 program, I cannot find it. So, this appears to be a very well done "deep fake" of an AT40 original extra that never existed, which I'm guessing is the work of Ken Martin. |

This is the Paul McCartney weekend with 3 out of 4. The 1973 show he was #1 with My Love The 1976 show he was #2 with Silly Love Songs The 1980 show he was #2 with Coming Up He was not in the 1987 show
In 6/7/1980 Funkytown was #1. A remake by Pseudo Echo was #36 in 6/6/1987

In the 1980 show, Casey mentioned 3 different song titles had each been used in 4 different top 40 hits. Saturday Night, You, and Call Me. What about "Lady"?
Styx, Little River Band and Kenny Rogers hit the top 40 with different songs titled Lady.
Any one else hit the top 40 with a song called "Lady"? The Whispers, of "Rock Steady" fame, had a same-titled tune, which was a #3 smash on the R&B chart, reach AT40 for four weeks in 1980. dL |

When I hear him I always think of Larry Morgan the Pro Stock drag racer.
On the 6/20/187 cue sheet it says: This week, George Michael's controversial song, "I Want Your sex," jumps into the Top 40 at #36--with a bullet. Even though some programmers have elected to delete the song from their playlists, Billboard Magazine reports that sales are strong. Strong enough to keep pushing it up the chart.
Since American Top 40 is faithful to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, we will, of course, include the song in the countdown. But we realize that each programmer is responsible for responding to the individual standards in his or her community.
So, if you'd like to delete the song from our countdown, here's the information you'll need to do it quickly. As I said, the song ranks at
#36, so that's side 1A on disk, and the middle of hour one, if you tape it from satellite."
The 1/2/1988 cue sheet says

If your station isn't playing George Michael's song, "I WANT YOUR SEX," then you might want to delete it from the 1987 Year End Countdown. It ranks as the 24th most popular song.
And you' 11 find it at the begining of hour 7. That's the first song on side 7A
I've seen one of the cue sheets from another time, don't remember the date, that warned the PDs that because of the licensing contract, they can't remove songs from the show.
