While still recording AT40 shows on WPNC (and thankful there's at least one more scheduled airing for the movie songs countdown), let's preview this coming weekend, shall we? This weekend, there's one '80s show and two '70s shows so once again the weekend preview will be a two-parter. We'll start with the '80s first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 7/13/1985. I'm listening to the top 50 of the 1970s. It's too bad that they didn't do a top 50 of the 1980s at the end of the decade. They did top 40s in 1983 & 1987 ,but not in 1990.
And at 9pm they are doing AT10 from 4/7/2007, with a spotlight on Michigan artists.
Top 10 in 3 hours. He is playing plenty of extras.

What's going on with WPNC?
I already had the 1983 yearend countdown from Iheart but didn't have the extras.
I was positioning it for the first extra spot and I noticed from during #94 "Your love is driving me crazy to the end at 51 it was distorted.
I noticed that during #94 so I started recording the rest and then that would make that good
But when they got done with the extra just before 52, it ended and then started with #50.
I'm doing the same with #50-1 1983, which is a good recording. They got done with #13 and then they played #52 & 51 of 1985 yearend.
then went back and played the 3rd extra from 1983 "1999".

How did You Light Up My Life get #1 for so many weeks? It has no pizzazz to it. Was there just no competition at the time?
From today and yesterday I've heard 1964-1973 plenty of times in different formats.
Next up is Top 40 Acts of the Rock Era I have 5/1/1971 and I need 10/6/1973
Monday they played 5/1/1971 and also on Tuesday. I'll see if they do 10/6/1973

No. Marty went back in time accidentally. And he ran into his parents accidentally. Which created the plot of the movie.

This is not about AT40, but about the charts.
I found an email that I sent on 12/31/1996 to Fred Bronson (fbronson@billboardgroup.com)
and I asked him 'Why do country singles max out at 20 weeks on the charts.'
He forwarded that to Geoff Mayfield of Billboard and Geoff sent me this reply:
"At the strong urging of Nashville record labels, singles are removed from the Hot Country Singles & Tracks after 20 weeks, unless they are still in the top 20 (that second provision was Billboard's idea, to protect truly popular songs.)
The policy creates room for newer titles to chart, which makes the chart more useful to radio programmers and label promotion departments.
Thank you for your interest in Billboard charts."

Then he played "At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama)" as the song that started the string. Is anyone able to find the show in which that AT40 Extra originally aired? I searched my extensive collection and came up empty. EDIT: Found it! ... sort of. Contrary to what the Watermark cue sheets led us to believe, this show included one original extra... sort of. A short, "AT40 Book of Records"-like segment about Pat Boone's four-year-long chart run originally aired between #28 and #27. And, although the segment included a 10-second clip of "April Love," it did not include the playing of "At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama)" nor any mention of it. You can see someone hand-wrote "BOR" etc. on the cue sheet on file at the Charis Music Group website. Still, since I'm unable to find where Casey ever played "At My Front Door (Crazy Little Mama)" on AT40, I suspect that part of this Optional Extra was another gem created by Ken Martin of WTOJ. Sadly I didn't get to hear it because KMCH opted to not play it. |

Do you have cassette recordings of the original shows from 1976? I suppose if you paused the commercials it would take 2 90 minutes cassettes. But then there would be a break when the cassette ran out on a side. That would be 100 tapes a year. That would be an extensive collection. |

I've heard Casey tell the story of John Loudermilk and the origin of Indian Reservation and how he heard it from John himself. I've also heard that the story is false. How is it that John would tell Casey a false story directly?
Oh wow. At the end of the show, Larry Morgan addresses this #2 song by telling the story of how it is false and why John Loudermilk made it up.

How is it that John would tell Casey a false story directly? Oh wow. At the end of the show, Larry Morgan addresses this #2 song by telling the story of how it is false and why John Loudermilk made it up.
Loudermilk was a self-professed "prankster", but I think telling a completely false story about being in such danger and not objecting to others retelling it to the general public goes a bit beyond a "prank". I don't know when JDL officially said "Sike!" (or "Psych!"), but I do know that as late as 1975 Casey retold the same story before playing "Indian Reservation" as an extra. (Incidentally, if his story were true Loudermilk would have been a member of the Cherokee Nation, as he claimed that his great-great grandparents were listed on the Nation's citizenship rolls. They were not.) |

I was wondering if they would do anything for Tony Bennett. The extra in question was "I Wanna Be Around". I honestly didn't think Tony Bennett would be recognized since he never officially charted on AT40 (his last Top 40 hit - "If I Ruled The World" - peaked at #34 in 1965). Kudos to Premiere for doing this. |
