Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Deep Purple" - Nino Tempo & April Stevens (NR) Hour #2: "Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain" - Willie Nelson (#55) Hour #3: "This Will Be" - Natalie Cole (#51) Of note: Premiere replaces Linda Ronstadt's "Heat Wave" as the Hour #1 extra with "Deep Purple". Once again, Premiere is going random. ([/quote] The original 9/20/75 show had Casey doing a "Whatever happened to?" update on Nino & April, with a drop-piece of "Deep Purple", and here Premiere edited in the full song and moved it to optional extra status. (Incidentally, several months later another brother/sister duo, Donny & Marie Osmond, had a hit with a cover of it.)

Whoa, what??? Fact check Casey time. How did he make this blunder? In the 1983 show, when introducing #33 Lady Love Me by George Benson. Casey said that four years ago George was baptized as a Christian Scientist. That is incorrect. The Los Angeles Times from 1989 said "“I’ve been a dedicated Jehovah’s Witness for 10 years,” he says, “and I studied the Bible long before that. I think I’ve changed my ways a little from my wild young days. I’m very careful in what I do; I’m no saint, but I do try to keep away from anything that will bring reproach on me. Religion has helped me escape some pitfalls--helped me, I like to think, become a better man.”"
Prince said the same thing after he studied the Bible with Larry Graham.
"Coincidentally, Benson worked on his 1996 album That's Right at Prince's Paisley Park Studios. Benson regrets that he and Prince didn't collaborate – referring to the Minnesotan as his "spiritual brother", both being Jehovah's Witnesses. "I was always looking forward to doing something like that, but he was not an easy guy to communicate with on that level, because he very seldom spoke at all to people that he wasn't comfortable with," Benson chuckles. "He didn't know me well, but he knew of my career and he had a lot of respect for what I do. As a matter of fact, he came down to the studio when I was recording to hear what we were doing. I gave him one of my guitars, which I saw in a lot of his performances and on the printed page everywhere in the world… We became spiritual brothers later. But, yeah, he was quite a character, I can tell you that!""

Hour #1: "The Rainbow Connection" - Hour #4: "Fins" - Jimmy Buffett (#70) Of note: I received the cue sheet before Jimmy Buffett's sudden death last week. All Larry Morgan needs to do is change the intro and outro to reflect his passing. RIP. :(
Casey did the intro for Fins with a story about Glenn Frey and Jimmy Buffett. No mention of Jimmy Buffett's death.

It was still updated though. But it was interesting they went with Casey instead of Larry Morgan but then again they did that for Olivia Newton-John last year for one. ETA: Oh and they did one for Tony Bennett even though he never had an official AT40 hit.

Once again there is one '80s show and two '70s shows so once again the weekend preview will be a two-parter (I'm really getting tired of having to do two-part postings every week Premiere!!!!!). We'll start with the '80s show first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 9/26/1987. Here is an edited repost: Six songs debuted this week: "I Think We're Alone Now" - Tiffany (#28) "Breakout" - Swing Out Sister (#30) "Mony Mony" - Billy Idol (#32) "It's A Sin" - The Pet Shop Boys (#37) "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" - Kenny G (#39) "Don't Look Down - The Sequel" - Go West (#40) Six songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "Love Power" - Dionne Warwick & Jeffrey Osborne (#26) "Mary's Prayer" - Danny Wilson (#27) "I Want Your Sex" - George Michael (#32) "Luka" - Suzanne Vega (#34) "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)" - Starship (#36) "Heart And Soul" - T'Pau (#38) Biggest Mover: "Bad" - Michael Jackson (#40 to #29) Biggest Dropper (tie): "Who's That Girl" - Madonna (#20 to #34) "Rock Steady" - The Whispers (#24 to #38) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Coming Around Again" - Carly Simon "Luka" - Suzanne Vega Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Holiday" - The Other Ones (#47) Hour #2: "Brilliant Disguise" - Bruce Springsteen (NR) Hour #3: "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" - Belinda Carlisle (#72; debuted) Hour #4: "Should've Known Better" - Richard Marx (#64; highest debut) Of note: Premiere has replaced Squeeze's "Hourglass" as the Hour #2 op extra with "Brilliant Disguise" The '70s shows are next.

Now to preview the two '70s shows. The "A" show for this week is from 9/26/1970. Here is my repost from 2016: Four songs debuted this week: "It's Only Make Believe" - Glen Campbell (#37) "El Condor Pasa" - Simon & Garfunkel (#38) "Still Water (Love)" - The Four Tops (#39) "Fire And Rain" - James Taylor (#40) Four songs fell off this week: "Hi-De-Ho" - Blood, Sweat & Tears (#22) "(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can't I Touch You" - Ronnie Dyson (#24) "Everybody's Got The Right To Love" - The Supremes (#29) "Everything's Tuesday" - Chairmen Of The Board (#38) Biggest Mover (tie): "Green-Eyed Lady" - Sugarloaf (#39 to #18) "I'll Be There" - The Jackson 5 (#40 to #19) Biggest Dropper (another tie): "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" - Stevie Wonder (#19 to #34) "Hand Me Down World" - The Guess Who (#21 to #36) Original extras: "Second That Emotion" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles "My Heart Has A Mind Of Its' Own" - Connie Francis "Lay Lady Lay" - Bob Dylan "Old Rivers" - Walter Brennan "Your Precious Love" - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell Note: The two Motown songs will remain in the countdown. The rest make up this week's optional extras. Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "My Heart Has A Mind Of Its' Own" - Connie Francis Hour #2: "Lay Lady Lay" - Bob Dylan Hour #3: "Old Rivers" - Walter Brennan The "B" show for this week is from 9/23/1978. Here is an edited repost: Five songs debuted this week: "Beast Of Burden" - The Rolling Stones (#35) "Josie" - Steely Dan (#36) "Almost Like Being In Love" - Michael Johnson (#37) "Devoted To You" - Carly Simon & James Taylor (#38) "Heartbreaker" - Dolly Parton (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Close The Door" - Teddy Pendergrass (#25) "Rock & Roll Fantasy" - The Kinks (#30) "Love Will Find A Way" - deleted Cruise (#37) "Two Tickets To Paradise" - Eddie Money (#38) "My Angel Baby" - Toby Beau (#39) Biggest Mover: "Get Off" - Foxy (#28 to #21) Biggest Dropper: "Miss You" - The Rolling Stones (#20 to #33) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Summer Nights" - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John (#6 this week) Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Double Vision" - Foreigner (#67; highest debut) Hour #2: "MacArthur Park" - Donna Summer (#50) Hour #3: "Cheeseburger In Paradise" - Jimmy Buffett (NR) Of note: Premiere has replaced Heart's "Straight On" as the Hour #3 op extra with "Cheeseburger In Paradise" because one week of paying their respects to Jimmy Buffett apparently wasn't enough for Premiere (and both were "B" shows!)

In the original show, that "Whatever happened to" segment including a short clip of "Deep Purple" aired between #38 & #37 but, for whatever reason—it lasted all of 1:44—the cue sheet made no mention of it. Along with that extended (now 4:34) extra which sounded every bit as if Casey originally did it that way, the entire show was remastered with stereo jingles and so forth, no doubt at the hand of Ken Martin.

Let's give this thread a nice bump. For once, there is only one '70s and one '80s show this week so you get a rare single post for this weekend's preview (which most likely will be the last time before Casey's Christmas specials become available in November). "AT40: The '7os" this week presents 10/1/1977. Here is a prior repost: Two songs debuted this week: "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me" - Barry White (#26) "Dusic" - Brick (#40) Two songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Star Wars (Main Title)" - The London Symphony Orchestra/John Williams (#30) "How Much Love" - Leo Sayer (#36) Biggest Mover (tie): "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" - Meco (#8 to #1) "The King Is Gone" - Ronnie McDowell (#28 to #21) Biggest Dropper: "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher" - Rita Coolidge (#20 to #38) Original extras: "A Fifth Of Beethoven" - Walter Murphy & His Big Apple Band "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" - Mac Davis The Walter Murphy song will remain in the broadcast. The Mac Davis song will be played as an optional extra. Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Blue Bayou" - Linda Ronstadt (#51) Hour #2: "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" - Mac Davis (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "Baby Come Back" - Player (#90; debuted) "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 9/29/1984. Here is a prior repost: Four songs debuted this week: "Blue Jean" - David Bowie (#33) "I Feel For You" - Chaka Khan (#38) "(What) In The Name Of Love" - Naked Eyes (#39) "Shine Shine" - Barry Gibb (#40) Four songs fell off this week: "When Doves Cry" - Prince (#23) "If Ever You're In My Arms Again" - Peabo Bryson (#30) "Only When You Leave" - Spandau Ballet (#34) "All Of You" - Julio Iglesias & Diana Ross (#38) Biggest Mover: "On The Dark Side" - John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band (#32 to #24) Biggest Dropper: "Rock Me Tonite" - Billy Squier (#24 to #36) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Somewhere Down The Road" - Barry Manilow "Bless The Beasts And Children" - The Carpenters Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Purple Rain" - Prince (NR) Hour #2: "Better Be Good To Me" - Tina Turner (#42) Hour #3: "Teacher Teacher" - .38 Special (#71; debuted) Hour #4: "Out Of Touch" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#48; highest debut) Of note: Back in 2019, Premiere dumped "Better Be Good To Me" for "You Might Think" by the Cars to honor Ric Ocasek's death.

... The "A" show for this week is from 9/26/1970. ... Oddly, when this episode aired yesterday on KMCH, Larry Morgan's usual introduction to Hour 1—"And now, Premiere Networks proudly present ..."—didn't happen. After the top-of-the-hour station ID, the AT40 theme music launched the program. Normally, I'd suspect the local station was to blame for something like that. However, since it seems the show's opening segment should include everything from Larry Morgan's intro up to the first commercial break, it should be rather difficult to 'forget' Larry Morgan's intro. Thus, I tend to think it must have been Premiere's doing. So, did anyone else out there hear the "A" show and notice if Hour 1 began without Larry Morgan's intro?

KZOY played the 80s B show on Saturday from 1-5 but I didn't catch that until late in the top 10. I was expecting WFMX to play it this morning at 5 am but they played the A 1982. Then I looked to WLKN to play it at 3pm but they played Ryan Seacrest. WFRO is playing the B show 1983 right now.
It's interesting that someone did an updated version of We Didn't Start the Fire. Same music but the words were updated to the last 35 years.

In the 1977 show when he introduced Lucy in the sky with Diamonds, he said From 64-70 dozens of other artists would cover the new Beatles songs the moment they were released. And not one cover record made the chart. And over the years hundreds of remakes were recorded by other artists and only 6 of those made the Top 40.
What is the difference between the cover records and the remakes?

In the 1980 show before playing "Another one Bites the Dust" Casey mentioned that the song was an inspiration for the Detroit Lions as they won their first 4 games that year. I remember that. Billy Sims was their #1 draft pick Running Back and got played alot. Everytime I hear that that song I think of the Detroit Lions and no where else but in this show have I heard the reference since then. They need to adopt that again considering that they are doing well this year.
Then in the 1986 show Casey mentioned the Detroit Tigers in the 1968 World Series with Jose Feliciano's rendering of the National Anthem. Two mentions of a city's teams in the same week.
In the 10/25/1986 show Casey answered the question of Gap between #1s. He said it was Strangers in the Night Scooby dooby doo. That was funny because he was in Scooby Do.

the Casey Christmas special airing on holiday-switched affiliates this weekend (according to Pete Battistini on the AT40 forum (which I sadly still can't register on)) is the AT10 special "Christmas at the Movies", which originally aired in 2005.

... "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 10/16/1976. Here is an edited repost: Of note: Premiere has replaced David Dundas' "Jeans On" which was the Hour #2 op extra back in 2016 with the "Liberty Valance" song. Premiere is being random once again. Thanks for all that but, once again, it turned out this wasn't random at all. A "Whatever Happened To Gene Pitney" segment (including only a brief clip of that song) originally aired in Hour 2 of the 10/16/1976 show, between #s 24 & 23. However, as we've seen before, there was no mention of it on the original Watermark cue sheets. When Premiere aired the show in 2016, the segment remained unchanged. This time, Premiere pulled it out, remixed Casey's original comments, extended the song, and turned it into an optional extra with Larry Morgan adding information about Pitney and his 2006 death.

It seems Casey considered those released very soon after the original to be covers. Later releases were remakes.

Ironically, they haven't given him the same treatment in either of the two 1976 shows they've aired since then, even though "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive" were both bigger hits. And coincidentally or not, this is the second week in a row that they replaced a Billy Joel extra from the 70s with an extra from the original show.

WWIS gets done with the LDD after #28 and then break and then goes into 11/17/1973 at that point with Gilbert O'Sullivan.
They said "There was an issue receiving the files, some may have transferred incorrectly. I have been communicating with the our provider on the issues"
It was so odd. Casey was telling the story of the guy tripping on his cereal. I heard that last night. Quite a coincidence. No, it was last night's 70s show again.
Yeaa, they fixed it and resumed where they left off.
Now, they skipped song #20 and jumped right into #19 Sleeping Bag.
