This weekend for a change we have only one '70s show and one '80s show so just one post for the weekend preview. "AT40: The '70s" this week presents 3/20/1976. Here is an edited repost: Three songs debuted this week: "Looking For Space" - John Denver (#38) "You'll Lose A Good Thing" - Freddy Fender (#39) "He's A Friend" - Eddie Kendricks (#40) Three songs fell off this week: "You Sexy Thing" - Hot Chocolate (#17) "Take It Like A Man" - Bachman-Turner Overdrive (#33) "Hold Back The Night" - The Trammps (#35) Biggest Mover: "Show Me The Way" - Peter Frampton (#37 to #25) Biggest Dropper: "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon (#11 to #18) Original extras: "Diamond Girl" - Seals & Crofts Back in 2017, this song stayed in the show. This time it will be played as an optional extra Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Shout It Out Loud" - KISS (#81; debuted) Hour #2: "Diamond Girl" - Seals & Crofts (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "Strange Magic" - Electric Light Orchestra (#55) "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 3/19/1983. Here is another edited repost: Five songs debuted this week: "Beat It" - Michael Jackson (#24) "She Blinded Me With Science" - Thomas Dolby (#36) "Little Red Corvette" - Prince (#37) "Winds Of Change" - Jefferson Starship (#38) "So Close" - Diana Ross (#40) Five songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "Goody Two Shoes" - Adam Ant (#28) "The Woman In Me" - Donna Summer (#33) "I'm Alive" - Neil Diamond (#35) "You Can't Hurry Love" - Phil Collins (#37) "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" - Night Ranger (#40) Biggest Mover: "Jeopardy" - The Greg Kihn Band (#27 to #16) Biggest Dropper: "Baby, Come To Me" - Patti Austin with James Ingram (#9 to #21) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "You Decorated My Life" - Kenny Rogers "Annie's Song" - John Denver Premiere Optional extras: Hour #1: "Solitaire" - Laura Branigan (#65; highest debut) Hour #2: "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" - The Clash (#52) Hour #3: "Photograph" - Def Leppard (#77) Hour #4: "Always Something There To Remind Me" - The Naked Eyes (#79) Of note: "Solitaire" replaces Al Jarreau's "Mornin'" as the Hour #1 op extra (though "Mornin'" was in the Hot 100 that week, it was played because Jarreau had recently died at the time). Speaking of deaths, none of the op extras appeared to have changed this week (I can certainly vouch for 1988 as WPNC aired all except the first one; I heard the first extra on WFRO) but in the case of 1976 Premiere could still change one of the extras to honor Eric Carmen (despite him being already represented in the countdown with "All By Myself"). Thank goodness this is a singleton weekend.

Of note: Premiere has replaced Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years" as the Hour #2 extra with "Oh Pretty Woman". Premiere is being random yet again. Yet again it's an updated/extended 'whatever happened to' segment, NOT a random extra. I wasn't planning on listening to this weekend's show but I might for that segment, I really like them.

So, I've been listening to American Top 40: The '80s on a near-weekly basis since 2018. I keep a close tally of the shows I've heard, and I Shazam every show, including all the droppieces. The following is a list of all the months from which I've heard every show hosted by Casey Kasem from beginning to end: January 1980 February 1980 August 1980
March 1981 November 1981
April 1982 September 1982 October 1982
November 1982
January 1983 April 1983 August 1983 September 1983
January 1984 February 1984 March 1984 April 1984
February 1985 April 1985 May 1985 June 1985 July 1985 October 1985
March 1986 April 1986 May 1986 June 1986 September 1986 December 1986
January 1987 February 1987 March 1987 July 1987 October 1987
January 1988 February 1988 March 1988 April 1988 June 1988 July 1988 August 1988
So far this year, Premier Radio Networks has done an excellent job of helping me complete entire months. With the shows they've chosen so far this year, I've now heard every show from March 1981, February 1982, April 1982, February 1984, March 1984, February 1985, April 1985, and March 1988. Also, with the May 21, 1988 show airing this weekend, I will soon have heard every show from 1988. Overall, April is my most complete month, with only 1981 and 1987 still having incomplete Aprils.
There are several more months I'm just one away from completing (with the shows I still need to hear in parentheses):
July 1980 (July 26, 1980) September 1980 (September 20, 1980) November 1980 (November 8, 1980) December 1980 (December 6, 1980)
January 1981 (January 10, 1981) April 1981 (April 18, 1981)
May 1981 (May 23, 1981) July 1981 (July 18, 1981) August 1981 (August 22, 1981) September 1981 (September 26, 1981) December 1981 (December 12, 1981)
January 1982 (January 23, 1982) March 1982 (March 6, 1982)
February 1983 (February 26, 1983) May 1983 (May 7, 1983) July 1983 (July 30, 1983) October 1983 (October 15, 1983) November 1983 (November 19, 1983)
May 1984 (May 12, 1984) June 1984 (June 16, 1984) July 1984 (July 21, 1984) August 1984 (August 11, 1984) September 1984 (September 22, 1984) October 1984 (October 20, 1984) December 1984 (December 8, 1984)
January 1985 (January 19, 1985) March 1985 (March 2, 1985) September 1985 (September 28, 1985)
January 1986 (January 25, 1986) February 1986 (February 1, 1986) August 1986 (August 30, 1986) October 1986 (October 4, 1986) November 1986 (November 15, 1986)
April 1987 (April 25, 1987) May 1987 (May 23, 1987) June 1987 (June 20, 1987) August 1987 (August 15, 1987) September 1987 (September 19, 1987) November 1987 (November 14, 1987) December 1987 (December 12, 1987)
And these are the months from which I'm still missing multiple shows:
April 1980 May 1980 June 1980
February 1981 June 1981 October 1981
February 1982 May 1982 June 1982 July 1982 August 1982 December 1982
March 1983 June 1983 December 1983
November 1984
August 1985 November 1985 December 1985
July 1986
Just as April is my most complete month, December is my most incomplete month, with 1986 having the only complete December. Amazingly, I still have not heard any shows from December 1983.
Here's how the number and percentage of shows I've heard stack up for me by year...
1980: 29/44 (65.9%) 1981: 29/44 (65.9%) 1982: 28/45 (62.2%) 1983: 33/45 (73.3%) 1984: 35/45 (77.8%) 1985: 36/46 (78.3%) 1986: 39/46 (84.8%) 1987: 36/44 (81.8%) 1988: 25/26 (96.2%)
After I complete 1988 this weekend, 1986 will be the year I'm closest to completing. Conversely, 1982 is the year from which I've heard the fewest shows.
I've also been listening to American Top 40: The '70s on a near-weekly basis since 2021, though I don't keep quite as close a tally of those shows. Basically, classics aside, the '80s shows have helped me remember songs I've forgotten and enjoy songs that don't get much radio airplay these days, while the '70s shows have introduced me to songs I've never heard before.

And finally for a very few affiliates (if any), there is the AT40 countdown from 5/26/2001.
Five songs debuted this week: "In My Pocket" - Mandy Moore (#32) "Fly Away From Here" - Aerosmith (#35) "So Fresh, So Clean" - OutKast (#38) "I Wanna Be Bad" - Willa Ford (#39) "Miss California" - Dante Thomas featuring Pras (#40)

Long Distance Dedications: "Reminiscing" - The Little River Band "Because You Loved Me" - Celine Dion "I'll Remember" - Madonna
Can you imagine CHR affiliates in 2001 playing a countdown with "Reminiscing" (from 1978) as an LDD?!?!?
