As happened in the past when the 70s A show was 1979, WPAC & WPNC went with 1979 instead of their usual B show. On Saturday WQMV played 5/31/1975 B show but their signal dropped many times throughout the show. Not buffering but it lost data. Now WVWP just started 5/31/1975.

The next two 1980s shows are June 13, 1981 and June 14, 1980. The former will give me a badly-needed addition for June 1981, a month from which I’ve only heard one countdown so far, and the latter will get me one away from completing June 1980.
Since both aforementioned shows are from the early 1980s, they will be paired with “B” shows from later in the decade. The two “B” shows I hope to hear are June 16, 1984 and June 20, 1987. I’m one away from completing June 1984 and June 1987, and those two shows are the ones I’m missing from each.
It helps that we haven’t heard a show from 1984 or 1987 in more than a month now. The last 1984 show was May 5, 1984. The last 1987 show was April 11, 1987.
Going forward through the rest of the summer, these are the shows that’d help me out the most by week…
June 29 weekend: June 26, 1982 / June 29, 1985
July 6 weekend: July 5, 1986
July 13 weekend: July 18, 1981 / July 16, 1988
July 20 weekend: July 21, 1984
July 27 weekend: July 26, 1980 / July 30, 1983
August 3 weekend: August 7, 1982 / August 3, 1985
August 10 weekend: August 11, 1984
August 17 weekend: August 15, 1981 / August 17, 1985
August 24 weekend: August 27, 1983
August 31 weekend: August 30, 1986
So far this year, Premier Radio Networks has done a good job of choosing the shows I need, so I hope they can keep up the good work through the summer.

I would love to hear those more often & though it might never happen, I'd love to hear the 90s Casey's Top 40 shows too, especially since the Rick Dees WT40 airs the same shows year after year now.

This week there were quite a few songs I never heard before. 1972 - Jimmy Osmond Long-haird Lover from Liverpool Michael Jackson was at #38 with "I wanna be where you are" & the Jackson 5 was at #21 with "Little Bitty Pretty One" Amazing Grace - Royal Scots Dragoon Guard was in the top 20. Reminds me of late 1959 when the Battle hymm Republic by Mormon Tabernacle choir was in the top 20 for quite a while. Troglodyte is quite a non politically correct song for today.
Roberta Flack's - First time Ever. I love that string bass or cello or whatever is producing that low sound. Sylvia's Mother by Dr Hook. Operator interrupted to deposit 40 more cents. People today wouldn't understand that. Oh Girl - Chi-Lites I like Hall & Oats version
1977 #40 & #39 I've never heard before Gonna Fly Now - Maynard Ferguson. I don't know the story behind that as I've only known Bill Conti's version.
I've never heard Hall & Oat's "Back together Again" Angel in Your Arms and Undercover Angel are back to back. How many weeks did that happen?
1981 #39 "I can take care of myself" Billy & the Beaters. I've never heard that before. I'm assuming that is Billy Vera & the Beaters of "At this moment" fame. Both songs end with the audience applause. 1981 was such a great year as there was such variety. #30 "Still Right here in my heart" Pure Prairie League. Now that I know that it is Vince Gill singing that, listening to that will never be the same.
1984 #40 Music Time by STYX. I've never heard that one. #29 "Modern Day Delilah" by Van Stephenson. When Casey said he was from Nashville, I thought that can't be. That name was familiar. He was 1/3rd of the country group Blackhawk. The one that died.

#40 Music Time by STYX. I've never heard that one. Arguably, their least-remembered top 40 hit. The story I heard was that being forced to perform on this song is what led Tommy Shaw to quit the band (though I suspect there were other issues before that).

In the 6/18/1988 show Casey said that Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick looks like Huntz Hall from the Bowery Boys. Where did Casey get that? Bowery Boys are not that well known. This article - www.bookedonrock.com/post/fact-or-fiction-rick-nielsen-of-cheap-trick-got-his-look-from-a-40-s-hollywood-characterThe author said "I had the opportunity to interview Brian J. Kramp, who is the author of "This Band Has No Past: How Cheap Trick Became Cheap Trick"" "One of the things Brian talked about was the recognizable look of each of the Cheap Trick band members, which includes guitarist Rick Nielsen wearing the bowtie and baseball cap with the bill flipped up. As Brian points out, some say Rick's look was inspired by an actor named Huntz Hall. Hall was part of an ensemble cast of characters called The Bowery Boys, who were pretty famous back in the 40s. I'm a classic film junkie, what can I say? The Bowery Boys were the stars of close to 50 films back in the day. One of the members was Horace Debussy "Sach" Jones, who was played by Huntz Hall." "Some say Rick's look was inspired by the character of "Sach" but Brian was told was that a fan simply threw a baseball cap on stage during a Cheap Trick concert one night, Rick put it on and decided to wear it from that point on. That kinda goes against the theory that Rick had the look planned out."

Speaking of Rick Nielsen and throwing things, in the guest hosted 6/9/79 show (played a couple of weeks ago by Sirius XM) Bruce Philip Miller told of Rick throwing a guitar out to an evidently lucky fan.
In the same show BPM told a story of ELO’s Bev Bevan tossing out his drumsticks to a fan who got a gash on his face from them, but didn’t mind at all.

Independent TV stations in big cities such as New York and Chicago recycled those Bowery Boys (previously called East Side Kids and Dead End Kids) films nearly endlessly on weekends through the 1960s and into the '70s. I admit to thinking there was a Huntz Hall connection as well when I first saw Rick and his mates. I don't believe anyone else I knew agreed. dL

A special note for next weekend. The 'A' show is the infamous 6/29/74.
Casey was headed to Hawaii to do 5-0 and needed extra time off so three shows were recorded at once. 6/22/74 and the top 40 singles acts of the 70s (airing 7/6). That left 6/29 of which the Billboard chart wasn't ready yet. So Casey and the staff made up their own Top 40.
WTOJs Ken Martin has recreated this show using the actual top 40 and it will air Sunday 6/30 at 9am EDT.

Is this what a combination of the Billboard chart and past AT40 shows put through AI would produce. Actual real intelligence and hard work from Ken Martin is doing that.

Are there songs that you didn't know or like until you've heard them on AT40?
Mine are Strawberry Letter 23 - Brothers Johnson I like the video and guitar and bass though I can't understand what he is saying.
The Hustle
Bad Time - Grand Funk
The Last Farewell - Roger Whitaker. Never heard that one before and it's a great song well sung.
The Rockford Files theme. I heard it on the TV show but when I've heard it on AT40 and played the long version on Youtube, I really liked it.
The Gap Band's - Early in the Morning The Dazz Band's Let it whip.

As an FYI, this countdown will air only on WTOJ while other affiliates will air the incorrect countdown so the WTOJ broadcast will be something worth recording.

Here is a prior repost: Three songs debuted this week: "Shout" - Tears For Fears (#35) "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" - Dead Or Alive (#38) "What About Love?" - Heart (#39) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Don't You (Forget About Me)" - Simple Minds (#27) "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" - David Lee Roth (#37) "Smooth Operator" - Sade (#40) Biggest Mover: "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" - Sting (#26 to #19) Biggest Dropper: "Never Ending Story" - Limahl (#22 to #36) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Solid" - Ashford & Simpson "Let's Hear It For The Boy" - Deniece Williams Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "All You Zombies" - The Hooters (#58) Hour #2: "Summer Of '69" - Bryan Adams (#55; debuted) Hour #3: "Power Of Love" - Huey Lewis & The News (#46; highest debut) Hour #4: "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" - John Parr (#74)

Now here are this weekend's '70s shows. The "A" show for this week is from 6/29/1974. Here is a prior repost: Now to explain the 6/29/1974 show scheduled to air this weekend. It is one of two original Casey-hosted AT40 shows in which an incomplete Billboard chart ran (6/9/1973 when the Hot 100 was revamped was another). For this show, the AT40 staff tried to guess what Billboard's Top 40 would look like in advance of the actual chart as Casey Kasem was about to depart for a few weeks to tape a guest appearance on "Hawaii Five-O". In the end, they got three out of 40 (the top two plus #34) correct. Here was the actual Billboard chart for 6/29/1974 (AT40 positions in parentheses) LW TW 03 01 Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown (1) 01 02 Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods - Billy, Don't Be A Hero (2) 02 03 The Stylistics - You Make Me Feel Brand New (4) 05 04 William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got (3) 07 05 Olivia Newton-John - If You Love Me (Let Me Know) (7) 12 06 The Hues Corporation - Rock The Boat (5) 09 07 Kool & The Gang - Hollywood Swinging (8) 06 08 Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (10) 15 09 George McCrae - Rock Your Baby (6) 27 10 John Denver - Annie's Song (16) 21 11 The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe (13) 16 12 Anne Murray - You Won't See Me (23) 17 13 Gladys Knight & The Pips - On And On (11) 04 14 Ray Stevens - The Streak (9) 19 15 Mac Davis - One Hell Of A Woman (18) 08 16 Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine (12) 25 17 Steely Dan - Rikki, Don't Lose That Number (20) 20 18 The Spinners - I'm Coming Home (19) 24 19 The Righteous Brothers - Rock And Roll Heaven (14) 26 20 Blue Magic - Sideshow (26) 11 21 Maria Muldaur - Midnight At The Oasis (22) 10 22 Marvin Hamlisch - The Entertainer (25) 13 23 The O'Jays - For The Love Of Money (15) 14 24 Carly Simon - Haven't Got Time For The Pain (17) 28 25 Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Get To Heaven (27) 18 26 The DeFranco Family - Save The Last Dance For Me (21) 31 27 Cher - Train Of Thought (24) 22 28 Jim Stafford - My Girl Bill (31) 40 29 Golden Earring - Radar Love (28) 39 30 ABBA - Waterloo (29) 23 31 Joni Mitchell - Help Me (32) 34 32 The Eagles - Already Gone (30) 29 33 Grand Funk Railroad - The Loco-Motion (39) DE 34 Elvis Presley - If You Talk In Your Sleep (34) DE 35 The Impressions - Finally Got Myself Together (I'm A Changed Man) (37) 32 36 Three Dog Night - The Show Must Go On (NR) DE 37 Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Takin' Care Of Business (35) 30 38 Cat Stevens - Oh Very Young (NR) DE 39 Jim Croce - Workin' At The Car Wash Blues (36) DE 40 Jimmy Buffett - Come Monday (38) The two songs AT40 guessed that didn't make the actual chart were (actual Billboard positions in parentheses) 33: ZZ Top - La Grange (41) 40: Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin' (44) "Keep On Smilin'" would eventually hit the Top 40 the following week and eventually peaked at #10. As for "La Grange", unfortunately #41 would be its' peak but it continues to be a staple on classic rock stations. Here are the optional extras for this week's show Hour #1: "The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace (#74) Hour #2: "Rock Me Gently" - Andy Kim (#66) Hour #3: "You And Me Against The World" - Helen Reddy (#63) As a reminder the correct countdown will be played exclusively on WTOJ Sunday morning at 9AM Eastern Time. Get those recorders ready! The "B" show for this week is from 6/30/1979. Here again is a prior repost: Five songs debuted this week: "One Way Or Another" - Blondie (#35) "Up On The Roof" - James Taylor (#36) "Getting Closer" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#37) "Sad Eyes" - Robert John (#38) "Weekend" - Wet Willie (#40) Five songs fell off this week: "Disco Nights (Rock Freak)" - GQ (#29) "Goodnight Tonight" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#33) "In The Navy" - The Village People (#35) "Deeper Than The Night" - Olivia Newton-John (#37) "Hot Number" - Foxy (#38) Biggest Mover: "Mama Can't Buy You Love" - Elton John (#40 to #30) Biggest Dropper: "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" - The Jacksons (#18 to #34) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Undercover Angel" - Alan O'Day "Greatest Love Of All" - George Benson Archive extras: "(You're) Having My Baby" - Paul Anka & Odia Coates "I Shot The Sheriff" - Eric Clapton "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" - Barry White Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "The Main Event/Fight" - Barbra Streisand (#47) Hour #2: "Heaven Must Have Sent You" - Bonnie Pointer (#69) Hour #3: "Let's Go" - The Cars (#80; highest debut) Hour #4: "My Sharona" - The Knack (#76) BTW around this time five years ago Premiere offered the same '70s and '80s shows to affiliates this week. The only difference was 1979 being the "A" show and 1974 (when Premiere switched out of "Rock Me Gently" to play "Sure As I'm Sitting Here" to honor one-time fill-in host Humble Harve of all people) was the "B" show.

... The "A" show this week is from 6/28/1975. ... The "B" show for this week is from 6/26/1976. Wondering why they'd offer a choice between two shows only one year apart. Normally it seems they might offer a 3-hour "B" when the "A" is 4. And, when the "A" is from the earliest years, some stations prefer to air something not so "old". I get that. So if anyone knows what Premiere was thinking here, I'm curious.

Even though they're only a year apart, 1976 is acceptable to all stations whereas 1975 isn't. The cutoff line had to be somewhere.

Often WPNC usually goes with the later year in "A/B" show designations but this past weekend they actually went with 1975 instead of 1976.
