Now to preview the two '80s shows. The "A" shows for this week is from 9/25/1982. Here is a prior repost: Of note: For this airing, Larry Morgan refreshed his introduction of "Mickey" to mention the song returned to the Hot 100 in 2023 when it was sampled for inclusion in the hit Speed Drive from the "Barbie" movie soundtrack. And I’m pretty sure they played the album version this time. |

The question about first country/ pop #1 was inserted into the 2nd hour between Elt and Heart And that's where it originally appeared in the show in 1976. For those who, like me, missed out last weekend--neither of my local affiliates aired the Hour 2 Extra--Casey said the first country song to hit #1 on the pop chart was "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke" by Tex Williams in the summer of 1947. Since that segment originally was only just over a minute long, with a short clip of the song, I have to wonder... Did Premiere extend it by including the entire song? Also, it might be worth noting that Premiere in 2013 had retained the segment in the show, and the Hour 2 Extra was "I Never Cry" by Alice Cooper. |

No AT40 on WSQL tonight. I guess that means wait until Sunday morning 9am on WTOJ to get the 4 hour 70s A show. I don't know who else plays the 4 hour A show.
Other possibilities, according to the list are
SAt 12 noon - WQOK – Greenville SC 4,
Sun 6 am – WBOW - Terre Haute IN 4,
Sun 9 am & 11 pm– WQOK – Greenville SC 4,
Sun 7 pm - WGHR – Spring Hill FL 4

WPAC Sat 7am normally plays the 70s B shows. If it is the 4 hour they start at 6am. Today at 7am they played the 1978 show but started at the 2nd hour.
I don't think that anyone will play 1971.

WSMG is playing 10/2/1971. The only one I found that it playing it. Caught it in time.
They did not play hour 1 extra but are playing hour 2 extra and did not play hour 3 extra

The WSQL stream was not good sounding. I'm wondering if it was them or did the original 1973 show sound that bad?
I'll just have to see what the ones on the weekend sound like.
That's gotta be them. Those shows were digitally cleaned up by Shannon. dL I got the 1973 show from a station on Sunday morning and it sounded much better. On WSQL the left track was so much lower than the right when they should be equal. I've seen stations that the signal only shows up as the left track. Unless that is how the software handles mono. I use Audacity and have it set for recording stereo. |

Peteski is reporting on another board AT40 Xmas shows start the weekend of 10/31, so this will be the final weekend of 'A' and 'B' shows in 2024.
Also, WTOJ flips to Xmas on Nov 6th.

Also, in previous airings, both of the other extras, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Hello It's Me," were voiced by Casey, but were not extras in this program when it originally aired in 1973. I'm guessing Premiere reused them this time around. Anybody know where these came from?EDIT: Premiere created the "Hello It's Me" extra by remixing a segment from the 11/10/1973 show, where it debuted at #36. But my search for the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" segment goes on... EDIT #2: The "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" extra was remixed from its debut in the 11/3/1973 program. So, rather than simply having Larry Morgan introduce the extras (I had captured these off the air in 2014), Premiere—Ken Martin, perhaps?—went to all the trouble of taking Casey's original segments from different shows and editing them to sound like original AT40 Extras. Impressive! |

Back on the August 2nd show, Casey played for the 3rd archive the 15th #1 song of the 1960s.
Mr Custer by Larry Verne.
I thought it was a horrible song and never heard that before and wondered how that became #1.
Today, I listened to Americas Top 40 from 10/10/1960 hosted by Jack K Homan and throughout it's fast run up the chart he has said how how much he hates that song. When it hit #1 he said that Larry Verne from Minneapolis MN, did a comedy circuit and had the most unfunny most despicable record he has ever heard among other things.
Maybe it was popular because it reflected people's feelings about Vietnam and people weren't offended by racist stereotypes.
Has there been anything as bad since that time? Those Cheech and Chong songs were pretty bad. But they didn't make the top 10.
