I only heard bits and pieces of last night's show...but frankly, I feel like Billboard's year-end listing for '82 would actually be more accurate than whatever AT40's list was. For example: "Oh No" coming in up at 41 and "Here I Am" up at 39 (or was it 38? I forget).

It hit #4 back in 1961. NOTES: - Something I'm going to start doing is color-coding the biggest (upward) mover and biggest dropper within the countdown - but only if Casey announces either as such.
- With all the upper-tempo songs out there lately, this show was kind of refreshing for all the slower music it had. That said, it felt like there was quite a bit of it in this week's show for a Top 40 of the later half of the 80s. I also have to hand it to WCRZ this week - not only did the show end when it was supposed to, but they played all four Flashback Extras this week. Add those to the show's own Extra, three LDDs, the Top 2 played in full at the beginning, plus the Top 40 itself...and that's 50 songs played in the four-hour slot!
- Casey erred when he stated that "Two People" was spending its third week at #30; it only spent two there. He did the same with "Control" at #6...methinks the week off he had the week before (He stated that Charlie Van Dyke filled in the week before.) must've had an after-effect.
- Fittingly, "This is the Time" was Billy Joel's 28th Top 40 hit. Casey announced Billy as having had more Top 40 hits than anyone in the countdown...except for Chicago, who in fact also currently had their 28th.
- Casey announced Ben E. King as the only artist at that time to have appeared in the Top 10 in four different decades - in the 50s as lead singer of The Drifters, 60s and 70s solo, and of course the 80s with the "Stand By Me" re-release.
- #1 on the Album Chart: Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi (earlier described as returning to #1, unseating Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-85)
- #1 on the Country Chart: "What Am I Gonna Do About You" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Soul Chart: "Stop to Love"

Even though this show doesn't air where I live, I'd like to see a playlist from early 1984. That's when I really started to get into music, especially when "99 Luftballons" came out.

That used to be how Casey closed AT40 (after "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars" of course). According to Pete Battistini's book "American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (The 1970's)", Casey began this ending on 6/25/1977. I have no record yet on when he stopped using the radio portion of his sign-off but I'm guessing either 1982 or 1983.

Well, I couldn't resist, as I read this thread for the first time today, doing what somebody had done a year or so ago; but rather than commentaries for each song, in my case just grades:
The Way We Were = A You're Sixteen = B Love's Theme = A Show And Tell = A+ Americans = F I've Got To Use My Imagination = U (too unfamiliar to grade) Let Me Be There = A Until You Come Back To Me = U The Joker = A Spiders And Snakes = A+ Smokin' In The Boys' Room = D Time In A Bottle = B+ Living For The City = A Jungle Boogie = A- Never Never Gonna Give You Up = U Me And Baby Brother = U Rock On = A+ Put Your Hands Together = U Boogie Down = U Helen Wheels = B- The Most Beautiful Girl = B Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo = B I Love = B+ Livin' For You = U Midnight Rider = C+ Last Time I Saw Him = A- Jim Dandy = D- A Love Song = B+ Joy = U Let Your Hair Down = U Leave Me Alone = A Baby Come Close = U When I Fall In Love = U Goodbye Yellow Brick Road = A Sexy Mama = U Abracadabra = U Walk Like A Man = U Top Of The World = B+ Dark Lady = A
As you can tell, the stations in my area weren't too big on R&B crossovers; nor had I even heard of The DeFranco Family until I started listening to these shows.
Centerfold = B I Can't Go For That = A Waiting For A Girl Like You = A Harden My Heart = A Turn Your Love Around = A+ Leather And Lace = B Physical = B+ The Sweetest Thing = A+ Shake It Up = A- Hooked On Classics = A Cool Night = A Sweet Dreams = A- Waiting On A Friend = B- Leader Of The Band = A- Open Arms = A- Take It Easy On Me = B- Let's Groove = B+ Come Go With Me = C You Could Have Been With Me = A+ Comin' In And Out Of Your Life = A Through The Years = B+ Love Is Alright Tonight = U Mirror Mirror = U Trouble = A Love In The First Degree = B+ That Girl = A+ Somewhere Down The Road = B+ Key Largo = A- Spirits In The Material World = A Abacab = B+ Working For The Weekend = B+ All Our Tomorrows = U Sea Of Love = C Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight = A Pac-Man Fever = D+ Daddy's Home = U Young Turks = B She's Got A Way = A When All Is Said And Done = A- I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World = A-

The #1 candy of 1986...Snickers.
- After reading the first LDD letter, Casey started with a five-second clip of a soprano singing. "Oops! Sorry, Mickie...wrong record." Hehe.
- While "Candy" 's story was placed perfectly, I feel like a couple of others weren't. "At This Moment" was only the fourth song of the 80s to place on the Pop, Soul, AND Country charts...only, we heard this right before #37 Anita Baker. Casey also informed us of Elvis Presley's three biggest hits, with an Elvis cover in the countdown at #25. However, we got to hear the Elvis info three songs early, right before #28.
- Story behind "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" as an Extra: Originally, the song existed in two solo recordings, by Streisand and Diamond each, on albums of theirs. A DJ in Louisville, KY heard the two recordings and loved them both. He also noticed that they were in nearly the same key, so, he mixed the two together and artificially created a duet. The artificial duet was a hit in Louisville, and Columbia Records - which had both Streisand and Diamond under contract - contacted them about making the duet real. One #1 hit later...the rest is history!
- No description of the second LDD...because I didn't hear it.
