It's springtime, ladies and gentlemen, and 24 years ago, our hit-makers apparently had one thing on their minds... This week, we're traveling back to a time where Level 42 believe that there's "Something About You", and Jermaine Jackson agrees with them, saying, "I Think It's Love". Mr. Mister aren't so sure, and ask, "Is it Love?", while Van Halen would like to know, "Why Can't This Be Love?" Whitney Houston believes that it just might be "The Greatest Love of All", while Alexander O' Neal & Cherrelle see it as a "Saturday Love", The Outfield believe that their fellow Brits in Level 42 are just looking for "Your Love", and The Force MDs are hoping that it's a "Tender Love". Robert Palmer has watched this scene unfold before him, and after seeing Prince exchange quite a few "Kiss"es with some of the Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls", has immediately diagnosed the whole lot as being "Addicted to Love". May 3, 1986 LW #1: Prince & The Revolution "Kiss"40 -- Heart - Nothin' at All (10) 39 -- Simple Minds - All the Things She Said (28) 38 -- Tears For Fears - Mothers Talk (27) 37 -- Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) (1) 36 -- Howard Jones - No One is to Blame (4) 35 38 The Honeymoon Suite - Feel it Again (34) 34 40 Starship - Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight (26) 33 37 Julian Lennon - Stick Around (32) LDD: Rod Stewart "You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" from Carmen in Liberty, TN to her husband Ron, whom she met after her oldest son's father split when she became pregnant with said son...and to Rod Stewart, whose songs helped her through the rough times she had after the split32 -- The Jets - Crush on You (3) 31 26 Alexander O' Neal & Cherrelle - Saturday Love (26) 30 19 Dire Straits - So Far Away (19) 29 32 Sade - Never As Good As the First Time (20) 28 31 ZZ Top - Rough Boy (22) 27 33 Culture Club - Move Away (12) 26 23 John Taylor - I Do What I Do (23) 25 34 Journey - Be Good to Yourself (9) 24 17 The Force MDs - Tender Love (10) 23 28 Mr. Mister - Is it Love? (8) 22 16 Jermaine Jackson - I Think It's Love (16) 21 25 Mike & The Mechanics - All I Need is a Miracle (5) 20 11 INXS - What You Need (5) 19 15 Sly Fox - Let's Go All the Way (7) 18 20 Level 42 - Something About You (7) 17 22 Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait (3) 16 21 Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald - On My Own (1) 15 07 Falco - Rock Me Amadeus (1) 14 24 Madonna - Live to Tell (1)13 14 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - American Storm (13)12 18 Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - If You Leave (4) 11 13 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy (8) 10 04 The Bangles - Manic Monday (2) 09 10 Phil Collins - Take Me Home (7) LDD: Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" from Sharon in Canada to her younger sister Meg, whom she's had fights with but still loves08 09 The Outfield - Your Love (6) 07 12 Whitney Houston - The Greatest Love of All (1) 06 08 Janet Jackson - What Have You Done For Me Lately? (4) 05 06 The Rolling Stones - Harlem Shuffle (5)04 05 Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love? (3) 03 01 Prince & The Revolution - Kiss (1) 02 03 The Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls (1) 01 02 Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love (1)NOTES: - Don't expect opening stories to become a regular part of my schtick, folks...I am (admittedly) not that creative. About halfway through the show, I realized that there were quite a few "Love" songs in this week's show - three of which were consecutive! - and so I thought I could brainstorm a little something which could tie 'em all together. Hope you like it! :)
- A couple of rather interesting production notes from this week's show...the second hour started with #32, which I have to think was pretty uncommon for a show this far into the 80s. Also of note was that the final segment consisted of not the top two, but rather the Top 3, plus a look at the artists with the most weeks logged on the album chart, all jam-packed into one long segment.
- There was also a correction in this week's show - a few weeks prior to this show (no idea which show it was), they answered a question about the instrumental that spent the longest time at #1. They answered it as the "Third Man Theme", which spent 11 weeks at #1. They were wrong..."Frenesi", by Artie Shaw, spent 12 weeks there, plus one more later on. Casey mentioned this after #23. Incidentally, the cue sheet for this show was posted on the AT40 Proboards site, but it was missing the page that would've had the middle of the 20s. Hmmm... ;)
- #1 on the Dance chart: "West End Girls"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love" by Stephanie Mills
- #1 on the Country chart: "Once in a Blue Moon" by Earl Thomas Conley
- #1 on the Album chart: 5150 by Van Halen

I'll add something here. Bruce Cockburn was one of the musical guests on SNL that week. He performed "Wondering Where The Lions Are." The other musical guest that week were The Amazing Rhythm Aces.

Cool that they're playing "When I'm With You"! That might be the only 1989 song they've ever done.

Cool that they're playing "When I'm With You"! That might be the only 1989 song they've ever done. Well...it was originally a 1983 record. Only got to #61 back then. Speaking of which... May 14, 1983 LW #1: Michael Jackson "Beat It"40 -- INXS - The One Thing (30) 39 -- Elton John - I'm Still Standing (12) 38 40 ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin' (37) 37 34 Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? (2) 36 31 Hall & Oates - One on One (7) 35 -- Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go (4) 34 30 Patrick Simmons - So Wrong (30) 33 35 Robert Ellis Orral & Carlene Carter - I Couldn't Say No (32) 32 26 Barry Manilow - Some Kind of Friend (26) 31 24 Kenny Loggins - Welcome to Heartlight (24) 30 -- Champaign - Try Again (23) Flashback Extra: The Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", which "became their first and only #1 hit" and "would help them get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"29 21 Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (8) 28 25 Stephen Bishop - It Might Be You (25) 27 37 The Tubes - She's a Beauty (10)26 32 Hall & Oates - Family Man (6) 25 29 Ronnie Milsap - Stranger in My House (23) 24 14 Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (1) LDD: Chicago "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" from Lisa in Torrance, CA to her family as a way of saying sorry for things she's said and done23 27 Styx - Don't Let it End (6) 22 28 Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me (8) 21 22 Al Jarreau - Mornin' (21)Flashback Extra: Kajagoogoo "Too Shy", which was #41 that week20 23 Journey - Faithfully (12) 19 20 Rick Springfield - Affair of the Heart (9) 18 12 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Even Now (12) 17 19 Culture Club - Time (2) 16 08 Styx - Mr. Roboto (3) 15 18 Bryan Adams - Straight From the Heart (10) 14 16 Duran Duran - Rio (14)13 15 Def Leppard - Photograph (12) 12 17 Lionel Richie - My Love (5) 11 10 Toto - I Won't Hold You Back (10) Flashback Extra: Eddy Grant "Electric Avenue"10 05 After the Fire - Der Kommissar (5) 09 11 Laura Branigan - Solitaire (7) 08 09 Prince - Little Red Corvette (6) 07 13 Irene Cara - Flashdance...What a Feeling (1) 06 04 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen (1) 05 07 Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science (5)LDD: Lionel Richie "Truly" from Deedee in Boston to Juan in Miami, whom she met and fell in love with when she went on vacation, despite not wanting to fall in love on said vacation04 06 Men at Work - Overkill (3) 03 02 The Greg Kihn Band - Jeopardy (2) Flashback Extra: Sheriff "When I'm With You", which debuted at #86 that week (and didn't hit #1 until over five years later ;))02 03 David Bowie - Let's Dance (1) 01 01 Michael Jackson - Beat It (1)NOTES: - Early posting again this week! This week's show comes courtesy of WIDL.
- Unlike the somewhat "obscure" feel of the 4/23/88 show three weeks ago (also, incidentally, courtesy of WIDL), this week's show had a very "familiar" feel to it with all the big-name artists and still-played hits on it.
- Both of MJ's 1983 solo #1s have now been heard as #1s this year. That's a first for the 80s series, since "Beat It" spent 3 weeks at #1, and this is the first of any of those weeks to have been played yet, plus the previous '83 show's #1 was, of course, "Billie Jean". All we need now is a December show with "Say Say Say" at the top, though preferably not the December 24 show, since that's been done twice.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love" by BJ Thomas
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Candy Girl" by New Edition
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson

Rune Knight, has there ever been a chart in this run that has had more than 5 artists with two songs in the 40? Well, the week before this past weekend's show had seven - Duran Duran and Lionel Richie each had a dropper this week. The other five are Michael Jackson, Styx, Journey, Culture Club, and Hall & Oates. But the May 7 show hasn't been aired as of yet. Off the top of my head, I think April 30 - which also hasn't aired yet - had all of those except for Hall & Oates ("Family Man" hit AT40 on May 7). I can't imagine that there'd be any other such shows, but I'd have to research it to be sure.

Only this time, it's for good reason - I can't tune in for WCRZ's airing tonight.
- Take a look at the last 1987 show that was aired before this one - does #40 look familiar? ;) And while we're at it, five other songs in the bottom ten were also heard somewhere on that show.
- Why only one LDD this week, I wonder? On top of that...it was a currently-charting song.
- Quite a peculiar chart this week: In the bottom ten, we have seven songs going down (and with one exception, those ships would all be sunk come the week after!). In the 20s, we have five songs all currently peaking. At the top of the teens, we have four consecutive songs all holding in place, and none of them are at their peaks yet. Add only one LDD to this mix and we have quite a Koo-ky For-ty this week.
- #1 on the Album chart: The Joshua Tree by U2
- #1 on the Country chart: "Can't Stop My Heart From Loving You" by The O' Kanes
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Always"

I don't doubt that the extras would've been different back then as they were with the '80 show.
- First extra comes courtesy of WIDL - I listened to the first hour there before having to switch off. And WCRZ has been almost totally anti-80s-Extras ever since the January 1987 show, which I really don't get.
- "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was played as one of their earliest hits in marking the Stones' success.
- Is it me, or does this show have an incredibly dated feel to it? Much of the first hour really felt dated with older-sounding songs such as the 60s-sounding "Just So Lonely" and the lesser hits down there, and later on, there'd be a 50s cover ("Since I Don't Have You"), numerous Beatles or Beatles-related songs, and the Stones as an Extra!
- This marks my sixth consecutive show posting, and it caps the first full month through (after posting no May shows last year!). This show could be it, though, as next weekend I have to be in Lansing.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Elvira" by The Oak Ridge Boys
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?" by Chaka Khan
- #1 on the LP chart: Hi Infidelity by REO Speedwagon

Wow, you don't hear "Just So Lonely" too often. It's a catchy song but I don't think it was on the Top 40 for more than a couple of weeks.

NOTES: - Another correction this week - though this one's a little less chart-based. A few weeks prior, Casey, in answering a question letter, had mentioned that Venus, the Greek goddess of love, had been mentioned in a couple of #1 titles. Venus, of course, isn't Greek. ;)
- Methinks that Casey's AT40 and the concept of timing were two entities that never had a very good history together - Casey answered a question about albums that spawned four Top 40 hits so far in the 80s, and one such album, Foreigner's 4, achieved that feat this very week. But he didn't give his answer in any close proximity to their hit - no, he read it after #23.
- And while we're on the subject...nice choice of "After the Glitter Fades" as an Extra this week - that would go on to put one more album on that "four Top 40 hits" list. And nice of Premiere to stick it right at the end of that second hour. ;)
- #1 on the Country chart: "Finally" by T.G. Sheppard
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let it Whip"
- #1 on the Album chart: Tug of War by Paul McCartney

There might've also been a station mention, but I don't remember.
- Story behind "Rock and Roll All Nite" as an Extra: Years before this show date, there was a year in which the high school football team in Cadillac, MI started their year off by losing their first two games. Someone came up with the idea of playing Kiss records in the locker room before each game, and...the team went on to win their next seven games in a row! The city wrote the band to tell them about it, and the band responded by playing a free concert at the high school, where many of the students were decked out in Kiss make-up. At a reception the next morning, many city officials were also decked out in kind.
- After #11 was a "Whatever Happened to..." story about Boston (the band). What a difference two-and-a-half years make!
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Got Mexico" by Eddie Raymond
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Hear it For the Boy"
- #1 on the Album chart: The Footloose soundtrack
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" by Jermaine Jackson

There were no Michigan affiliates mentioned on the 6/16/1984 show.
This weekend's AT40: The '70s show is from 6/12/1971
Four songs debuted this week: "Don't Pull Your Love" - Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds (#30) "Never Can Say Goodbye" - Isaac Hayes (#33) "Albert Flasher" - Guess Who (#34) "Puppet Man" - Tom Jones (#37)
Four songs fell off this week: "Stay Awhile" - The Bells (#24) "Timothy" - The Buoys (#32) "I Love You For All Seasons" - The Fuzz (#33) "I Don't Blame You At All" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (#38)
Original extras: "Paperback Writer" - The Beatles "Moody River" - Pat Boone "The Wayward Wind" - Gogi Grant "The Wayward Wind" has been kept in the broadcast. The other two songs listed above will be played as optional extras. Personally, I wonder why "Paperback Writer" was not kept in the show and "The Wayward Wind" was not an optional extra since the Beatles song has been played more recurrently than Gogi Grant (let alone Pat Boone).
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Paperback Writer" - The Beatles (original AT40 extra) Hour #2: "Moody River" - Pat Boone (original At40 extra) Hour #3: "Mr. Big Stuff" - Jean Knight (#48)
Positions for 6/16/1984 optionals I'm Free: highest debut at #50 (mentioned before) What's Love Got To Do With It: #45 Ghostbusters: debuted at #68 Sunglasses At Night: #44
BTW "What's Love Got To Do With It" and "Sunglasses At Night" were noticeably edited. "Sunglasses At Night" was ridiculously shortened. I would like to know the running time for that.

Could be a mastering/timing issue, probably not with the songs themselves but rather with the parts of the show that correspond. Either that or Premiere has the dartboard on loan from Rick Dees this week.

According to somebody on the AT40 Fun & Games Board, Premiere had "Sunglasses At Night" edited to a little over 2 minutes.
