According to somebody on the AT40 Fun & Games Board, Premiere had "Sunglasses At Night" edited to a little over 2 minutes. I'm sure the show has to time out properly. I can't imagine the engineer cutting it down just for the hell of it. Seems like a lot of unnecessary work. I'd much rather have an optional song edited down since it's not part of the original countdown anyway.

I'd much rather have an optional song edited down since it's not part of the original countdown anyway. See, I think that defeats the purpose of even putting the song as an extra. Why bother putting it in if you're only going to cut it down? I prefer no cutting whatsoever...or if something has to be cut, why not the modern-day ads? Thanks for writing in! Now, on with the countdown: June 25, 1983 LW #1: Irene Cara "Flashdance...What a Feeling"40 -- Bryan Adams - Cuts Like a Knife (15) 39 31 Laura Branigan - Solitaire (7) 38 -- Billy Idol - White Wedding (36) 37 29 Bryan Adams - Straight From the Heart (10) 36 26 Prince - Little Red Corvette (6) 35 35 Chris DeBurgh - Don't Pay the Ferryman (34)34 20 Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science (5)LDD: Andrew Gold "Thank You For Being a Friend" from Lisa in Indiana to her group of eleven friends that she met during her last year of college33 39 Prince - 1999 (12) 32 37 The Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1) Flashback Extra: Men Without Hats "The Safety Dance", which debuted at #90 that week31 33 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Roll Me Away (27) 30 34 Donna Summer - She Works Hard For the Money (3) 29 30 A Flock of Seagulls - Wishing (26) 28 28 Jim Capaldi - That's Love (28)27 36 Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (5) 26 27 Rod Stewart - Baby Jane (14) 25 32 Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know? (4) 24 24 The Bee Gees - The Woman in You (24) 23 23 Champaign - Try Again (23) 22 22 The Little River Band - We Two (22)Flashback Extra: Michael Sembello "Maniac"21 25 DeBarge - All This Love (17) 20 06 Lionel Richie - My Love (5) 19 21 Madness - Our House (7) 18 05 Men at Work - Overkill (3) 17 19 The Kinks - Come Dancing (6) 16 18 Elton John - I'm Still Standing (12) 15 17 Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (5) 14 16 The Tubes - She's a Beauty (10)13 08 Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me (8) 12 12 Journey - Faithfully (12)11 11 Michael Jackson - Beat It (1) Flashback Extra: Taco "Puttin' on the Ritz", which debuted at #75 that week10 15 Kajagoogoo - Too Shy (5) 09 09 Rick Springfield - Affair of the Heart (9)08 13 Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go (4) LDD: Climax "Precious and Few" from Gregory in the U.S. Navy, stationed on a submarine, to his wife Phyllis07 07 Styx - Don't Let it End (6)06 10 Hall & Oates - Family Man (6)05 03 David Bowie - Let's Dance (1) 04 14 The Police - Every Breath You Take (1) 03 04 Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (2) Flashback Extra: The Human League "(Keep Feeling) Fascination", which was perched at #41 that week02 02 Culture Club - Time (Clock of the Heart) (2) 01 01 Irene Cara - Flashdance...What a Feeling (1)NOTES: - "She" may have blinded Thomas Dolby with science, but as you can see, mathematics certainly weren't kind to him this week. ;)
- Speaking of which, Casey announced the song as [sole] biggest dropper, but Lionel Richie's "My Love" took an equal-sized drop this week.
- Premiere also announced that "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" would debut on American Top 40 the next week - and while it certainly did reach the Billboard Top 40 the very next week, such would not be the case with July 4th Special-airing AT40, not until the week after.
- "Don't Pay the Ferryman" gets my underline tag because July 2 would be its sole peak week (and, as it happens, also its last week in the Top 40). Same story with "She's a Beauty" and "Don't Let it End", minus the "last week in the 40" part.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Fool For Your Loving" by Mickey Gilley
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume
- #1 on the Album chart: Flashdance soundtrack
- Factoid: "Juicy Fruit" was a certified million-seller, yet only went to #45 on the Hot 100. It did, however, spend 8 weeks at #1 on the R&B chart.

This is my 10th show posting dating back to the previous 1988 show. This is also most likely where the streak ends, as I'll be up at Higgins Lake for the 4th.
- How often is it that a song debuts in the 40, then drops within the countdown? "Black and Blue" did it here.
- Speaking of that previous show..."Heart of Mine" got the standard jingle opening despite being a ballad, as happened with "Piano in the Dark" last time. (On that show, no song received the slow-tempo jingle, but "Circle in the Sand", "The Flame", and "Make it Real" all did here.)
- Did Casey really call Def Leppard's hit album Animal? (OOPS! ;))
- No announced biggest mover OR dropper this week...you don't see that very often. This kinda felt like a slow-moving chart with the biggest jump being only 8 notches, despite this being 1988.
- The underlined songs all had their sole peak week the week after this. (Yes, even "Dirty Diana"!) So did "Tall Cool One", but that only went down one notch for July 9, so he doesn't get the tag here.
- Is it just me, or is it very odd that there was nary a mention of the upcoming July 4 special, which would've been the very next week? Maybe it's because Casey would be leaving within a month's time...but still.
- WIDL also did something odd...they went to commercial after #4 and stuck the last Extra in right after. This isn't like the 5/3/86 show, where the Top 3 was one big segment - there was a bumper between 3 and the top two. WCRZ, in turn, made me thankful that I've made a habit of listening early on WIDL lately, because they screwed up the end royally this time - they played last week's Top 2 instead of this week's Top 3! Not a nice way to cap off my ten weeks, guys... Since both stations went to commercial after #4, I'm inclined to think that it was just produced this way even back in '88.
- #1 on the Country chart: "He's Back and I'm Blue" by The Desert Rose Band
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Joy" by Teddy Pendergrass
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Trouble" by Nia Peeples
- #1 on the Album chart: OU812 by Van Halen

"The Glamorous Life", which was two weeks away from hitting the Top 4002 02 Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark (2) 01 03 Prince & The Revolution - When Doves Cry (1)NOTES: - Premiere has seen fit to give us 1984 again rather quickly - how quickly, you ask? Well, last time Duran Duran was just a week away from hitting #1. This time, they're losing #1. (Ouch. ;))
- Also last time, Rick Springfield jumped over Dan Hartman in the 40. This week, the reverse happens (and Rick's peaking).
- That's a pretty steep drop for Culture Club this week...but it's not the biggest drop ever recorded within the Top 40. What is that drop, you ask? Well, Casey answered a question letter asking that very question, and that distinction belongs to "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa" by Napoleon XIV, from 1966. That song recorded a drop of 32 big notches, from #5...all the way down to #37.
- As an aside, Culture Club's drop is actually bigger than the Eurythmics' drop out of the 40...as they fell to 41, for a drop of one notch less.
- WCRZ had a somewhat sexist preference this week...they played both of the extras voiced by female singers, but neither of the male-voiced ones. WIDL obviously played all four.
- #1 on the Album chart: Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen
- #1 on the Country chart: "Somebody's Needin' Somebody" by Conway Twitty
And, pulling a hat trick... - #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "When Doves Cry"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "When Doves Cry"

37: YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE THIS - LOU RAWLS (2) For what it's worth, Watermark's original cue sheet was wrong; the correct title is, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". Regardless, thank you all very much for continuing to post these lists.

Here are this weekend's AT40 shows
AT40: The '70s is playing 7/17/1971
Six songs debuted this week: "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" - Marvin Gaye (#26) "Hot Pants (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants) (Part 1)" - James Brown (#27) "Rings" - Cymarron (#33) "If Not For You" - Olivia Newton-John (#37) "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)" - The Stylistics (#39) "Liar" - Three Dog Night (#40)
Six songs fell off this week: "Double Lovin'" - The Osmonds (#23) "Sweet And Innocent" - Donny Osmond (#24) "Don't Knock My Love (Part 1)" - Wilson Pickett (#26) "Nathan Jones" - The Supremes (#27) "Never Can Say Goodbye" - Isaac Hayes (#31) "Escape-ism (Part 1)" - James Brown (#35)
Interesting that Donny Osmond had two songs fall out of the Top 40 this week. How often does that happen?
Original extras: "I Feel The Earth Move" - Carole King "Harbor Lights" - The Platters "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" - Elvis Presley Because Carole King's "Tapestry" was #1 on the album chart this week, you get to hear both sides of her hit single. "I Feel The Earth Move" - B-side of "It's Too Late" - will be included in the show. "Harbor Lights" is an optional extra this week and "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" has been deleted.
Premiere optional extras: "Maybe Tomorrow" - Jackson 5 (#46) "Harbor Lights" - The Platters (original AT40 extra) "Ain't No Sunshine" - Bill Withers (#88; debuted)
AT40: The '80s this week features 7/19/1980
Three debuts this week: "I Can't Let Go" - Linda Ronstadt (#38) "All Out Of Love" - Air Supply (#39) "A Lover's Holiday" - Change (#40) Although Change had their only Top 40 song for this and only week, the lead singer of the group would go on to bigger and better things. His name was Luther Vandross.
Three songs fell off this week: "Should've Never Let You Go" - Neil Sedaka & daughter Dara (#30) "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" - Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes (#32) "Call Me" - Blondie (#33)
Original extras: "Desperado" - The Eagles (you won't believe the story for this one)
Long Distance Dedications: "Danny's Song" - Loggins & Messina "No No Song" - Ringo Starr

(11)Flashback Extra: Cyndi Lauper "She Bop", which was "just a week away from hitting the Top 40"10 11 Rod Stewart - Infatuation (6) 09 16 Elton John - Sad Songs (Say So Much) (5) 08 10 ZZ Top - Legs (8) 07 07 Mike Reno & Ann Wilson - Almost Paradise (7) (also a LDD from Tish in Indiana to her then-recently-ex-fiance Dennis - despite their recently breaking it off after 11 years, she knew that some of their problems were not his fault)06 15 The Jacksons - State of Shock (3) 05 03 The Pointer Sisters - Jump (For My Love) (3) 04 04 Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face (4)03 08 Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters (1) Flashback Extra: Bananarama "Cruel Summer", which "went on to become one of their three Top 10 hits"02 02 Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark (2) 01 01 Prince & The Revolution - When Doves Cry (1)NOTES: - #30, #27, #23, #20, #19, #17, #15-7, #5, #4, #2, and #1 have all been in the Top 40 for all three 1984 shows this summer. In addition, #25, #24, #16, and #3 were the extras from the June show, which...add all those together, and you get exactly half the chart, minus one. A lesser occurrence of this happened last year, with six songs on shows from June, August, and September, but at least then, the first and last shows were three months apart. On top of that...#30 and #15 (as an extra) were also both in the April show (which I didn't get to hear). ENOUGH ALREADY, Premiere!
- A pretty cutthroat chart this week - lots of songs jumping over other songs in the Top 40, and out of the twelve songs peaking this week, only three - #26 and the Top 2 - did not have someone jumping over them this week.
- Both "Time After Time" and "Stuck on You" received the standard jingle bearing - actually, nobody received the softer jingle this week.
- I'm not sure if the national commercials are the same for everyone, but if they are, then pay close attention - you'll hear Premiere voice-over man Larry Morgan moonlighting as a pitchman for Wal-Mart. ;)
- Also pay close attention right after #5 for a rather "ghostly" jingle.
- The #1s on the Billboard charts are all the same from two weeks ago, except for the Country chart, whose #1 this week was "Just Another Woman in Love" by Anne Murray. Also from the Soul chart...#6 is "If Ever You're in My Arms Again", and #2 is "What's Love Got to Do With It".

They were all scheduled pretty nicely, too. :)
- This week's show had a very poppy feel to it...several songs seemed to have a similar-sounding light dance-pop tempo.
- Despite choosing "You Can Call Me Al" as an extra this week, Premiere didn't make reference to the song not being a hit until later (like they did with Sheriff for the 5-14-83 show).
- Right in the last segment, some station (which I can only identify as 92X) cut into the signal. >:( It affected the quality of #2 and #1 and caused me to miss some of the other chart #1s.
I'll edit those in later.
- WCRZ started at 7:51 - nearly 10 minutes before the hour - but still finished around midnight. They didn't play any extras, of course.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Rockin' With the Rhythm of the Rain" by The Judds
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Closer Than Close" by Jean Carne (jdelachjr: thanks for correct spelling! :))
