Three future #1s! Oddly enough, the one debut that managed to debut on the entire Hot 100 in the same breath - a fact noted by Casey - was the one that didn't get there! ;)
- Casey related that Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits wrote "Money For Nothing" using language that Mark himself heard, as the song was based on a real stop into a television store. Not that that matters in the name of political correctness edits bent on removing it all...
- This week had the opportunity to break a long-standing chart record, as going in, foreign acts had held the #1 spot for the past 14 weeks, tying the then-current record. So close...but they couldn't overcome "The Power of Love". ;)
- Incidentally, this week's Extras sort of followed that trend, with the American act as the last one.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Freeway of Love"
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Shout" (remixed)
- #1 on the Album chart: Songs From the Big Chair by Tears For Fears
- #1 on the Country chart: "Real Love" by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers

But who knew that they would opt to play all four on the week that I opted to sleep in and miss the WIDL airing?
- BUT THE BAD NEWS IS: They also skipped the first segment of the final hour (songs 11-9). >:(
- A rather inauspicious beginning to this countdown, with the first four songs all falling - three of them right from their peaks! (Not counting last week's #1, which started the show.) Although, even more inauspicious was The Tubes' departure from the 40 - all the way to #82! :o
- Casey played the first verse of the original "Bette Davis Eyes" by Jackie DeShannon before playing what was then "the biggest hit of the 1980s".
- Both debuts were pretty high up for being the only two debuts - and, as noted by Casey, both are from Scottish women.
- The other four #2 hits from Creedence Clearwater Revival: "Bad Moon Rising", "Green River", "Proud Mary", and "Travelin' Band".
- Casey certainly had a number of interesting stories and ways to spice up the countdown this week...such as his soap opera-style intro to "Jessie's Girl".
- BUT THE BAD NEWS IS: He was also a bit off his game in terms of chart-watching this week - he announced "That Old Song" as first moving up nine notches, then eleven. Then he announced "I Don't Need You" as first spending its third week at #3, then its second. Lastly, he announced "Theme From Greatest American Hero" as first moving up a notch, then holding.
- Something you wouldn't find often...all of the artists behind this week's #1s on Billboard's other charts could be found in the countdown, and no two were the same.
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Don't Need You"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Endless Love"
- #1 on the Album chart: 4 by Foreigner (title announced as Foreigner 4)
- And, to top it all off...the show has "Endless Love" at #1, and airs on a day (in 2010) when no less than six of my friends all had weddings - two with each other!

I don't usually listen to the 70s show at all, but I wanted to tune in for this one to hear Casey's Elvis tribute. Having been used to four-hour countdowns since...ever, the pacing of a 3-hour show like this was a bit jarring.
- OK, #40 was cut to a minute in length (maybe) - not the best way to start the show.
- Who knew that both this show and the 80s show would have biggest droppers nearly equal in size falling from their peaks?
- WHNN, unlike their 80s counterpart, did not opt for Premiere's extras this week.
- Casey chose not just any song to pay tribute - he chose the one that moved him the most when he heard it.
- Casey's stories must have had better timing in the 70s - he related that Rumors set the new record for longest-running #1 album of the 70s to lead into "Don't Stop". Several of the 80s shows have had no such gift for timing.
- Casey ended both shows this weekend with "...and keep your radio tuned right where it is".
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Float On"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" by Crystal Gayle
- #1 on the Album chart: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

(1)NOTES: - Once again, no announced biggest mover or dropper this week (though the latter was a tie).
- Two songs spent three weeks at #38 in 1984 - "10-9-8" by Face to Face and "Two Sides of Love" by Sammy Hagar. We heard the debut week of "10-9-8" on the previous 1984 show (July 21), and on this show is the 3rd week for "Two Sides of Love".
- OK, you might have noticed how I keep mentioning the ill-timing of some of Casey's stories. Well...this week, they got it right! Casey answered a question asking what solo artist had had the most Top 40 hits while still being a member of an active group, leading into the active group's "State of Shock" at #18. Guess who the solo artist was. ;)
- The softer jingle got quite a bit of mileage this week, which included leading the first song in the top 40, which doesn't seem like it happened often.
- #15 "Round and Round" and #12 "I Can Dream About You" were switched. On the Billboard chart, Ratt was in fact #12 and Dan Hartman was #15. Nice going, ABC/Watermark.
- #1 on the Album chart: Purple Rain by Prince
- #1 on the Country chart: "Let's Fall to Pieces Together" by George Strait
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Ghostbusters"

According to Rob Durkee's AT40 book, Billboard was often sending AT40 the list with mistakes in it, so it's very possible it was the magazine's fault and not Casey's staff. They got the list a few days ahead of the published chart.

This one has been posted here already, but I figure given what show it is (and the fact that it's all the way back on Page 2), it's worth another look... September 14, 1985 40 40 Laura Branigan - Spanish Eddie (40)39 28 Sting - If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free (3) 38 27 Billy Ocean - Mystery Lady (22) 37 37 Katrina & The Waves - Do You Want Crying (37)36 -- Bruce Springsteen - I'm Goin' Down (9) 35 -- Hall & Oates With David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks - The Way You Do the Things You Do/My Girl (20) 34 36 Michael McDonald - No Looking Back (34)33 -- Loverboy - Lovin' Every Minute of It (9) 32 38 UB40 & Chrissie Hynde - I Got You Babe (28) 31 -- Stevie Wonder - Part-Time Lover (1) 30 20 Heart - What About Love? (10) Flashback Extra: Glenn Frey "You Belong to the City"29 30 John Waite - Every Step of the Way (25) 28 34 John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - C-I-T-Y (18) 27 32 Sting - Fortress Around Your Heart (8) 26 19 Howard Jones - Life in One Day (19) 25 33 Mick Jagger & David Bowie - Dancing in the Street (7) LDD: Barry Manilow "This One's For You", from Sue in Maryland to Burgundy, as a message that she's overcome her alcoholism that had driven him away24 26 Eurythmics - There Must Be an Angel (22) 23 14 Corey Hart - Never Surrender (3) 22 13 Tears For Fears - Shout (1) 21 22 The Motels - Shame (21)20 24 Godley & Creme - Cry (16) Flashback Extra: Don Henley "Sunset Grill"19 25 John Cougar Mellencamp - Lonely Ol' Night (6) 18 23 Whitney Houston - Saving All My Love For You (1) 17 21 A-Ha - Take on Me (1) 16 16 Motley Crue - Smokin' in the Boys Room (16)15 18 Ready For the World - Oh Sheila (1) 14 17 Madonna - Dress You Up (5) 13 15 The Pointer Sisters - Dare Me (11) LDD: Henry Gross "Shannon" from Walt in Cincinatti, OH to his two daughters in memory of their recently-deceased family pet Snuggles; "Shannon" is about a dog who swam into the ocean and never came back12 09 Billy Joel - You're Only Human (Second Wind) (9) 11 05 Bryan Adams - Summer of '69 (5) 10 11 Pat Benatar - Invincible (10)Flashback Extra: Starship "We Built This City"09 10 Prince & The Revolution - Pop Life (7) 08 12 Wham! - Freedom (3) 07 04 Aretha Franklin - Freeway of Love (3) 06 08 Phil Collins - Don't Lose My Number (3) LDD (The Case of the Missing Earring): Diana Ross "Theme From Mahogany" from Patty in St. Louis, MO to her friend Donna, who recently took a job in Saudi Arabia and thus had to miss a Diana Ross concert despite being a true-blue fan05 02 Huey Lewis & The News - The Power of Love (1) 04 07 Kool & The Gang - Cherish (2) 03 06 Dire Straits - Money For Nothing (1) Flashback Extra: Heart "Never"02 03 Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (2) 01 01 John Parr - St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) (1)NOTES: - On last week's show, we had Stevie Wonder leading a group of debuts with a future #1 hit, and Tina Turner peaking in the upper reaches with a big hit. Take a look at this week's countdown...does anything seem familiar? ;)
- Also on last week's show, that softer jingle got quite a bit of mileage. Well...perhaps not surprisingly, this week it got absolutely no mileage at all!
- Also as on last week's show, no announced biggest mover or dropper this week.
- As you can see, we had three LDDs this week, a fact often lost when compared to this being the "Dead Dog" dedication show and all. I have to wonder if this was in fact the first show to ever have three LDDs in it... (EDIT: It's not. April 12, 1980 - which has not yet aired - is.) BTW, you can thank Casey for the subtitle in the third LDD. ;)
- Incidentally, all three LDDs were hits from the same year...in this case, 1976. How often does that happen? :o
- All four extras were shortened in some form this week, which seems REALLY dumb, IMO.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Modern Day Romance" by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Cherish"
- #1 on the Album chart: Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits

1985 was a sensational year for top 40 radio. For those of you who listen to the eighties version of 'At40', at what time & on what station do you listen to it, since the listings at www.radiotime.com are pretty skimpy and not all that accurate? Thanks!

Thank you very much--these recreations are terrific, except that there are far too many radio stations out there which air them (and other syndicated shows) at insane hours (like 6 AM local time!!).
I didn't know that Springsteen had six top 40 singles from a single CD until I heard 'I'm Goin' Down' om 'AT40'.
Thanks again!

- Maybe it's just me...but I don't think Sheryl from the first LDD read the lyrics to the Billy Ocean song.
- Casey noted the previous week's Hot 100 debut of "Causing a Commotion" at #41.
- I literally double-taked when Casey was heard announcing the George Michael song title. Did he really do that, or did Premiere edit that in?
- Interesting that both Tommy James & The Shondelles remakes were extras this week, yet nary a mention of their origin was made.
- Is that a different version or remastering of "Here I Go Again" that they played this week? It sounds different from the song that I'm used to hearing.
- The #1s on Billboard's other charts were read pretty early this week - leading into #5!
- "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" has its spoken intro included. :)
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack to La Bamba
- #1 on the Country chart: "This Crazy Love" by The Oak Ridge Boys
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"

This was one of only three times that Casey said "I Want Your Sex." One time was when the song fell off the chart, however, I don't know when the other time was.

I brought that up on the AT40 Proboards board...and it turns out that that's just what history would like us to believe. The title was mentioned during its first three weeks on the chart (6/20, 6/27, 7/4), during its last two (Charlie Van Dyke-hosted 9/12 and this week), and its drop date the following week. So this was definitely in effect during its prime weeks, but otherwise it didn't seem to matter. To stations, the whole song of course did matter. Take a look at the cue sheet for this week's show - the first page has instructions for stations who didn't play the song: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/09-20-87.pdf

Well they had to warn affiliates about "I Want Your Sex" for 14 weeks. I'll bet the AT40 staff were glad to see that song fall out of the chart.
