I caught the final 45 minutes this morning on CFN when I got home from work this morning; I hadn't heard Duran Duran's 'Union Of The Snake' in ages, and I also heard the song 'Gold' before the top-of-the-hour newscast.
Thanks for all of that additional information; it's quite fascinating.

Just to put it in perspective, "Gold" was #44 on 12/10/83, and debuted on AT40 the following week - Premiere could've easily made the song an extra if they felt so inclined.

On The Coast 103.2 FM, today´s show is from Dec 22nd 1984. Which Premiere will also be playing this week but first... AT40: The '70s features the Billboard chart of 12/26/1970 Three songs debuted this week: "Lonely Days" - Bee Gees (#26) "Games" - Redeye (#39) "We Gotta Get You A Woman" - Runt (Todd Rundgren) (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Heaven Help Us All" - Stevie Wonder (#16) "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" - Neil Young (#33) "Engine Number 9" - Wilson Pickett (#34) Original extras: "Higher And Higher" - Jackie Wilson "Silent Night" - Bing Crosby The Jackie Wilson extra has been kept in the show; the Bing Crosby extra - although it is a Christmas song - was cut. Premiere optional extras: "Share The Land" - Guess Who (#30)* "If You Could Read My Mind" - Gordon Lightfoot (#76; debuted) "Amazing Grace" - Judy Collins (#58) * = Even though "Share The Land" was in the countdown, it was not played by Casey in the original show even though there were two extras and George Harrison's B-side to "My Sweet Lord" ("Isn't It A Pity") in the broadcast. This is perhaps the only time in Casey's two AT40 stints that a countdown song was not played. AT40: The '80s this week - as mentioned earlier - is from 12/22/1984: Four songs debuted this week: "I Would Die 4 U" - Prince (#32) "Careless Whisper" - Wham! Featuring George Michael (#37; Hot 100 debut) "Foolish Heart" - Steve Perry (#39) "Neutron Dance" - The Pointer Sisters (#40) Four songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "It Ain't Enough" - Corey Hart (#21) "Purple Rain" - Prince (#26) "I Don't Wanna Know" - REO Speedwagon (#36) "Carribean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" - Billy Ocean (#39) Original extras: "Jingle Bell Rock" - Bobby Helms Long Distance Dedications: "I Love Rock 'n Roll" - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts "I Can Dream About You" - Dan Hartman Premiere optional extras: "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band-Aid (#65; debuted) "The Heat Is On" - Glenn Frey (#52) "Tenderness" - General Public (#51) "Money Changes Everything" - Cyndi Lauper (#57; debuted)

This is perhaps the only time in Casey's two AT40 stints that a countdown song was not played. You may be right about that, at least with the regular Top 40 shows. I remember hearing one of the Christmas specials (I believe this was played on XM awhile back) and Casey said that they couldn't find a copy of the song they wanted, so they skipped over it. Also, one week on AT10, Casey didn't play "Drift Away" by Uncle Kracker f/Dobie Gray. Instead that week, they substitued the original version by Dobie Gray. And in 1990, there was at least one week when Shadoe Stevens only played one version of "Unchained Melody" since there were two versions in the countdown that week.

- We have another week with a look at the top five albums on Billboard's Album chart. #5 - Arena by Duran Duran, #4 - Private Dancer by Tina Turner, #3 - Like a Virgin by Madonna, #2 - Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen, and #1...will be revealed a little later on. ;)
- OK, you may have noticed how I'll get on Casey's case for poor story timing sometimes. Well, this week I have to give that nod to Premiere, for scheduling "Do They Know It's Christmas?" as the first extra, when Casey had a reference to the song much later - in the last hour. In fact, he even pointed out the song's debut on the Hot 100 that week (but, so did Premiere)
- I usually don't do this...but I felt compelled to include CFN's time-filler songs (songs that are not Premiere extras that are played sometime during the show's timeslot) in the list this week. Why? Well...just look at what was played! I wouldn't be surprised if they tailor those songs to whatever the week's show is, also given that they played "Gold" after last week's 12-10-83 show ended.
- BTW...the fourth CFN song, also played after this week's show ended, was "Ti Amo" by Laura Branigan (peaking at #55 this week!). :o
- Story behind "Jingle Bell Rock" as an Extra: The song, as Casey put it, "permanently put rock & roll and Christmas together", and he also related how Bobby's song "Frowline" spent a full year on the country chart from March 1957 to March 1958 - at the time, the longest chart run by any single on any singles chart.
- Something I found interesting was that the standard jingle was used exclusively up through #20...and then starting with #16, only the softer jingle was used.
- Note the underlined songs - both 1-5 and 1-12-85 were guest-hosted by Charlie Van Dyke, and these are the songs that not only peaked during either or both of those weeks, but we also won't hear them any higher than they were this week.
- #1 on the Album chart (for the 21st consecutive week!): Soundtrack album from Purple Rain
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Operator" by Midnight Star
- #1 on the Country chart: "Why Not Me" by The Judds
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Like a Virgin"

One of the Xmas Special is called : Special Christmas Edition of American Top 10. A 3 hour show with old Casey. I it is not a countdown format. Thou Casey refers to it as An American Top 10 Christmas.
So there is extra content sent by Premier to the stations.
Obviously it is not about AT40, but stations announce Casey´s Xmas specials.

There were two Christmas specials in the 1970s: One in 1971, the other in 1973. In 1971 Casey didn't play the following songs: "Merry Christmas Polka" - Andrews Sisters (#39) "Snoopy's Christmas" (?!?) - The Royal Guardsmen (#31) (Note: "Snoopy's Christmas" still gets airplay on Christmas stations but there was not an airable copy to play back then?!?) "You're All I Want For Christmas" - Frankie Laine (#19) In 1973, AT40 recieved copies of these three songs listed above but the copies of "You're All I Want For Christmas" were not considered airable as Casey explained. Nice touch on "Drift Away". On AT40 in 1988, Casey substituted Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" with Elton's 1973 version of said song. Premiere played that show this year (1/30/1988). In addition to all this, there was at least one week in 1974 when Casey played only one version of "The Americans" when both Gordon Sinclair's and Byron MacGregor's versions were simultaneously on the chart.

AT40: The '80s will feature the first half of the Top 100 Songs of 1985.

The cutoff date for the Top 100 was 12/7/1985.

(5) 69 Kool & The Gang - Misled (10) 68 'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry (8) 67 Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days (5) 66 Bryan Adams - Run to You (6) 65 Cyndi Lauper - All Through the Night (5) 64 Phil Collins - Don't Lose My Number (4) 63 Mary Jane Girls - In My House (7) Flashback Extra: Depeche Mode "People Are People"62 Sade - Smooth Operator (5) 61 Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F (3) 60 Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels (3) 59 Tina Turner - Better Be Good to Me (5) 58 Madonna - Material Girl (2) 57 Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (2) 56 Animotion - Obsession (6) 55 Sting - If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free (3) 54 Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok (3) 53 Don Henley - The Boys of Summer (5) Flashback Extra: Lionel Richie "Say You, Say Me", the final #1 song of 1985...but because of Billboard's cutoff date, it didn't make it into the Top 10052 Billy Ocean - Suddenly (4) 51 Prince & The Revolution - Raspberry Beret (2) NOTES: - This week's Stations of the Week: Naturally, I'm home for Christmas, so obviously it's going to be WIDL and WCRZ. WCRZ, notably, played all four extras and still finished at 11:47.
- Casey noted that the rankings were from Billboard and that they ran through the first week of December.
- This half of the Top 100 was light on the jingles, although that's probably not too surprising. The first song of each hour received a jingle, as would be typical on the weekly show. But here, it was just those four.
- Casey ended the first half a little inauspiciously, shortchanging Prince a little by incorrectly giving his song a #3 peak. Oops! ;)
- The program ended with Larry Morgan abruptly cutting in during Casey's closing-hour outro, though it did result in an extended "between hours" bumper after the Premiere credits.
- Billboard's Top Act of the Year, Top Female Album Act of the Year, and Top Singles Act of the Year: Madonna
- Billboard's Top Act of the Year on the Soul chart: Kool & The Gang
- Billboard's Top Male Album (and Album & Singles combined) Act of the Year: Bruce Springsteen
- #1 Album of the Year: Born in the USA
- Billboard's Top Male Singles Act of the Year: Bryan Adams
- Top Soundtrack of the Year: Beverly Hills Cop

Although I wasn't able to hear the countdown this weekend, I do remember when Casey said something like, "Did I say earlier in the show that 'California Girls' was the only remake? Well, I was wrong because here's another..."

Any thoughts on how Do What You Do and Jungle Love ended up in the top 100, while several top 10 peaking songs did not?

Hello everyone!
I have been admiring this board as a guest the past year & would like to THANK everyone who posts the lists each week ... it is very helpful in deciding wether or not to record the programs each weekend.
I enjoyed the chance-of-pace this past weekend with the “best of” countdowns ... but must ask aloud if any of you found the chart placement for 1974 a little “weird”
Shouldn’t “Rock The Boat” by the Hughes Corporation have charted higher than #43 for the year? It was a multi-week #1 song (3 weeks) that I heard on the radio ALL THE TIME in 1974 ... I do not recall EVER hearing neither “Sideshow” by Blue Magic nor “Until You Come Back To Me” by Aretha Franklin on the radio.
Also, after listening to the montage of every #1 song from 1974, I found it odd that a few of the songs did not even make the Top 100 of 1974 list ... most notably: “You Haven’t Done Nothing” by Stevie Wonder and “I Can Help” by Billy Swan.
You thoughts?
‘looking forward to discussion chartology with you guys!

His countdown of the top 50 songs of 1985 this weekend is going to be an exceptional one for this baby-boomer; that was arguably the best year of the entire decade for top 40 radio (very honorable mentions to 1984 & 1988), and just a flat-out phenomenal year for the format in too many ways to mention.

OK everyone! This weekend's AT40: The '80s show continues the Top 100 of 1985. Included in the show at #29 is "Lovergirl" by Teena Marie who passed away earlier this week.
Optional extras for the second half of the Top 100 of 1985 are: "Never" - Heart (peaked at #4 on 12/7/1985) "Party All The Time" - Eddie Murphy (peaked at #2 on 12/28/1985) "I'm Goin' Down" - Bruce Springsteen (peaked at #9 on 10/26/1985) "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" - David Lee Roth (peaked at #12 on 6/1/1985)
AT40: The '70s this week presents 1/7/1978
Four songs debuted this week: "Emotion" - Samantha Sang (#37) "What's Your Name" - Lynrd Skynrd (#38) "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration" - Donny & Marie Osmond (#39) "Peg" - Steely Dan (#40)
Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "You Make Loving Fun" - Fleetwood Mac (#21) "Baby, What A Big Surprise" - Chicago (#25) "Heaven On The 7th Floor" - Paul Nicholas (#31) "Your Smiling Face" - James Taylor (#38)
Original extras: "Midnight Train To Georgia" - Gladys Knight & The Pips "Why Can't We Be Friends" - War Both these songs will be played as optional extras this week. The other optional extra is "Always And Forever" by Heatwave which debuted at #78 in Billboard's Hot 100.
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone! Shouldn’t “Rock The Boat” by the Hughes Corporation have charted higher than #43 for the year? It was a multi-week #1 song (3 weeks) that I heard on the radio ALL THE TIME in 1974 According to the Hues Corporation entry in Wikipedia, Rock The Boat was #1 for only 1 week (July 6); the AT40 cue sheets at charismusicgroup.com appear to confirm this. But, in spite of that, the song has proved to have a lot more staying power than many higher entries in the Top 100 countdown for 1974. Also, after listening to the montage of every #1 song from 1974, I found it odd that a few of the songs did not even make the Top 100 of 1974 list ... most notably: “You Haven’t Done Nothing” by Stevie Wonder and “I Can Help” by Billy Swan. Both of those hit #1 on the Billboard chart in November. After occupying the top spot for two weeks at the end of the month, I Can Help was still holding strong at #3 on the December 14 chart, which I believe was the cutoff for the Top 100 compilation. Therefore, it was held over for 1975's annual countdown (#43, I think). On the other hand, although You Haven't Done Nothin' was #1 for the week of November 2, it had fallen completely out of the Top 40 by November 23 which suggests its overall run was too short to crack the year's Top 100.

Any thoughts on how Do What You Do and Jungle Love ended up in the top 100, while several top 10 peaking songs did not? Given that they apparently peaked relatively low (13 and 20, respectively), I'd guess each must have spent many weeks on the chart in order to accumulate the sales needed to make the Top 100.

Actually, Billboard used 10/26/1974 as the cutoff date for their year-end Top 100 which is why you don't see "You Haven't Done Nothin'", "I Can Help" or any other song that hit #1 late in the year listed. In the mid-'70s, Billboard used an early cutoff date meaning songs that peaked in November or mid-to-late December get shortchanged

Being in Atlanta for a convention and through midnight on New Year's means not being able to hear the show until Sunday...but no matter.
- Getting into the top forty portion of the show means being able to utilize "Top 40" jingles, which Part Two certainly did. #40 "Nightshift" got a softer jingle, though "You're the Inspiration" at #37 and "Heaven" at #24 did not.
- Casey erred when he stated that "California Girls" was the only remake in the Top 100 back at #88, though he corrected himself at #34. He also erred in the outro for "St. Elmo's Fire", calling it #16. (Oops! ;))
- Casey referred to the Miami Vice soundtrack as the biggest-selling TV soundtrack in history as well as the first to have two hits in the Top 10 simultaneously.
- "Crazy For You" was the top movie song of the year.
- Hall & Oates were the top act of the 1980s...so far.
- "Careless Whisper" is the top song of 1985...but oddly enough, we have yet to hear it at #1 for even a single week!
- Billboard's Top Female Soul Artist of the Year and Top New Artist of the Year: Whitney Houston
- Billboard's Producer of the Year: Nile Rodgers
- Billboard's Top Duo of the Year: Wham!
- Billboard's Top Dance/Disco Artist and Top Female Artist of the Year: Madonna
- #1 Country Song of the Year: "Lost in the Fifties Tonight" by Ronnie Milsap
- #1 Soul Song of the Year: "Rock Me Tonight" by Freddie Jackson

Rock The Boat was #1 for only 1 week (July 6) Oops -- "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae was #1 the next two weeks (July 13-20) ... three straight weeks with a #1 song beginning with the word Rock threw me! Thanks to everyone for the explanations ... that list STILL does not seem representative of the Top 40 songs of 1974.

For the Olivia Newton-John extra, Casey mentioned how Bob Eubanks - who filled in for Casey the previous week - wanted to sign an Englishman named Tony Cole to a U.S. recording deal back in 1970. However, Cole's agent said in order for Eubanks to sign Cole, he would also have to sign a young female singer. Eubanks never heard of this woman before and didn't think it was necessary to sign Cole and the unproven female singer. Of course, this young female singer that Bob Eubanks turned down was none other than Olivia Newton-John. Casey must have been feeling the effects of his vacation back then as he closed the show by saying the chart date as January 16th, 1981 (he also would say January 23rd, 1981 the following week) Speaking of goofs, Larry Morgan screwed up on the Police extra saying it was the group's first single from the album "Ghost In The Machine". Never mind that the Police were already in the 40 with "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" which was from - "Ghost In The Machine" #1 album: 4 - Foreigner #1 country: I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World - Ronnie Milsap #1 soul: Let's Groove - Earth, Wind & Fire (8th straight week at #1)

From the stories I've read on the AT40 Proboard, and another one of my own, this week's show can certainly be filed among the "How difficult should this be, really?" pages. First, there's Casey's and Larry Morgan's own screw-ups, already documented. Then... - On WUEZ, during the "Last Week's Top 3" recap, "Physical" suddenly cut to #34 "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic". Then, after that, the show went to #35!
- WTIC is instead airing 1/19/80.
- WNYR and WRVF are instead airing last week's Part Two of the Top 100 of 1985.
- CKRU has their normal timeslot pre-empted this weekend due to a hockey game.
- WMJJ was on the ball until halfway through the show, when they suddenly jumped on the NYR-RVF 1985 bandwagon.
- And now, only minutes ago, following the show's normal first hour, WCFR aired all four Premiere extras, one after the other, in sequence.
I was going to take the week off from show posting anyway, since I've been downstate at a meeting for most of this weekend, but this weekend's AT40: The 80s shenanigans are just too good to ignore!
