OK Libra, if you have the '80s recap ready. Go ahead. Otherwise, if unavailable, I'll try to have it up on Saturday. You probably won't have to post any sooner; this weekend was out-of-the-norm for me. I went and posted it anyway, but as I noted, I was in fact not available. I thought I'd be able to post it sooner, but that was not to be. I actually haven't listened to the Coast FM airings before this, and the only reason I was so gung-ho on this one was due to "Africa" at #1. By contrast, 1/16/82...not so much, save for all the station mix-ups that weekend. I don't anticipate listening to future shows so early unless it's another show I'd otherwise hate to miss on a weekend where I'm going away (this might happen the third weekend of March, but that remains to be seen). Long Distance Dedication: Can't Smile Without You - Barry Manilow from Michelle, Mark, Missy and Mike along with their mother Nancy in Central Falls, Rhode Island to their father who they are separated from while he is working in Texas Long Distance Dedication: Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross from Teresa in Arizona to her boyfriend Mike 3,000 miles away in Rhode Island I will say this, I can't help but note how both LDDs are about being separated from loved ones, and both writers are writing from Rhode Island. How does that happen?

You can't imagine this GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!.
Coast 103.2 FM has started on satellite, on Nilesat satellite , which I have access and that means digital feed for AT40 The 80´s .
That means bye bye to the online feed, at least for me and for people who have access to the satellite feed.
Nilesat 102 at 7º West.
Frequency 12226 H, SR 27500, FEC 3/4.
Channel Label : Ajman CH 4 FM.
Stereo feed.

- Would this feed be of the same quality that Premiere Radio Networks might send to affiliate stations for their broadcast? If not, how would the sound quality of this compare to, say, analog FM, HD Radio, and/or satellite radio (XM/Sirius)?
- Is AT40 The 70's available this way, as well?
Thanks for any info.

LOL. I Googled "Nilesat" and found that, as the name implies, the company uses satellites parked over North Africa to serve the Mediterranean region. So, I'm not planning to be in any position to point a dish toward--much less subscribe to--Nilesat anytime soon. ;) I'll just have to remain content with old-fashioned analog stereo on the good ol' terrestrial FM band (which is not difficult, given that the Sony XDR-F1HD tuners fed by a rooftop antenna do sound awfully good!).

Thanks for any info. Coast 103.2 FM is a free to air (FTA) service in the frequency mentioned above at 7º West, Nilesat 102. All you need is a FTA satellite receiver and a parabolic dish and the size of it depends of where are you receiving. In the Mediterranean Europe you can pick the signal with an 80 cms dish ( 0.8 metre dish). The feed depends of the technical parametres the station use. It is not the same as the original copy Premiere send to stations, but that occurs with all the stations. If you compare the Coast 103.2 FM´s satellite feed with its own streaming feed ( online), there is an abyss, because the online feed is taken from an analogue FM radio receiver tunned to 103,2 FM. And the satellite feed is digital. They only air the 80´s , not the 70´s. They are not a 70´s station.

This week's four droppers were all songs that ranked within the Top 100 songs of 1985, while of the four debuts that replaced them...NONE of them made it into the year's Top 100! Talk about diminishing returns...
- Casey stated that "Relax" was the #1 song of 1984 over in the UK...except that it was not; that honor went to the song that would go on to be the top song of the entire decade over there: What else, but "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
- By this point, the show's opening theme had changed...but other than that, the show still felt like an '84-produced show. Some of the bumpers would soon be phased out for the rest of this theme package's duration, but it looks like that hadn't happened yet.
- Casey revealed that the only singer to have every album that they sang lead vocals on make the Top 10, whether group or solo, was Robert Plant. Just a few months later, Plant's Shaken 'n' Stirred, released on May 20...would peter out at #20. Womp womp womp... ;)
- #1 on the Album chart: Like a Virgin by Madonna
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Loverboy"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Mr. Telephone Man"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Ain't She Somethin' Else?" by Conway Twitty
Now...I'm going to do a rare chart comparison - and please bear with me on this one. You see, the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 show from February 16, 1985 is available for listening on his website. That show uses the Radio & Records chart from February 8, and it's this chart that I'd like to compare to this weekend's AT40 show. Behold: February 16, 1985 (chart of February 8) Sure Shot: Prince & The Revolution "Take Me With U"40 -- Mick Jagger - Just Another Night (9) 39 -- Bryan Adams - Somebody (8) 38 -- Phil Collins - One More Night (1) 37 40 Eric Carmen - I Wanna Hear it From Your Lips (30) 36 37 Pat Benatar - The Ooh Ooh Song (36)35 21 Stevie Wonder - Love Light in Flight (14) 34 39 Billy Joel - Keeping the Faith (13) 33 35 John Hunter - Tragedy (??) 32 SS Madonna - Material Girl (1) 31 18 Madonna - Like a Virgin (1) 30 38 Duran Duran - Save a Prayer (10) 29 34 John Parr - Naughty Naughty (19) 28 36 Survivor - High on You (7) 27 25 General Public - Tenderness (25) 26 33 Teena Marie - Lovergirl (4) 25 29 Tina Turner - Private Dancer (12) 24 26 The Honeydrippers - Rockin' at Midnight (23) 23 28 Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax (10) 22 27 Journey - Only the Young (6) 21 31 Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes (4) 20 23 Ashford & Simpson - Solid (17) 19 16 Midnight Star - Operator (16) 18 10 Steve Perry - Foolish Heart (10) 17 13 Prince & The Revolution - I Would Die 4 U (7) 16 19 The Time - Jungle Love (15) 15 22 New Edition - Mr. Telephone Man (13) 14 11 Chicago - You're the Inspiration (1) 13 17 Sheena Easton - Sugar Walls (11) 12 14 Kool & The Gang - Misled (10) 11 07 Don Henley - The Boys of Summer (6) 10 15 John Fogerty - The Old Man Down the Road (6) 09 12 David Lee Roth - California Girls (2) 08 09 Glenn Frey - The Heat is On (4) 07 08 REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling (1) 06 03 Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover (2) 05 05 Hall & Oates - Method of Modern Love (5) 04 06 The Pointer Sisters - Neutron Dance (4) 03 04 Billy Ocean - Loverboy (3)02 01 Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is (1) 01 02 Wham! - Careless Whisper (1)OFF (I had to look these up): Jack Wagner - All I Need (LW: #32) Culture Club - Mistake #3 (LW: #30) Giuffria - Call to the Heart (LW: #24) Cyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything (LW: #20) NOTES: - Overall, this show seems much more comparable to the following week's AT40, since the show dates match more closely than do the chart dates. As I stated, Rick's chart was using Radio & Records by this point, which Rick pointed out a few times during the show.
- Countdown Challenge: A brief snippet from a song, which this week was "The Warrior" by Scandal. Normally I wouldn't be inclined to just give it away, but it's so ridiculously easy to identify when you hear it.
- Flip, Flop, or Flip-Flop?: Rick introed "The Ooh Ooh Song" as #36, then outroed it as moving up 1 to #35 instead of 36. Then, for the next song, "Love Light in Flight", he went ahead and introed it as #35...and outroed THAT as down 14 to #36!
- From Bad...to Worse!: The segment that had #34 and #33 is missing from the website. The only reason I know what those are is because it's posted on the website - but chartboy's site is missing data for "Tragedy", thus the uncertainties above. (He is aware that it's missing; I e-mailed him about it.)
- Rick played the version of "Save a Prayer" found on the Arena album.
- Rick described "Only the Young" as "slipping" five to #22...a bad choice of verb, since it implies that the song was falling (when it was in fact rising). He did the same with "The Boys of Summer" later on, only that time was more accurate.
- From the "You Gets No Love" Files: Julian Lennon's "Too Late For Goodbyes" makes the biggest upward move on both charts, yet neither Casey nor Rick makes recognition of this. Ouch, man.
- During the show, Rick read off the top three songs from 14 years ago: #3 - "Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando & Dawn, #2 - "Mama's Pearl" by The Jackson 5, and #1 - "One Bad Apple" by The Osmonds. The problem? This is from the 1971 Billboard chart of February 27...which doesn't quite match a show from the 16th.
- "Sugar Walls" seemed like it was edited...badly. (The edits seemed choppy.)

OFF (I had to look these up): Jack Wagner - All I Need (LW: ??) Culture Club - Move Away (LW: #30) Giuffria - Call to the Heart (LW: #24) Cyndi Lauper - Money Changes Everything (LW: #20) Wasn't Culture Club's dropper, "Mistake #3"? (ironic, huh?)

Just detected another Larry Morgan error. In his intro for "Obsession", he mentioned Animotion had two Top 40 hits with the other being "Room To Move" (1989). Animotion did chart later in 1985 with "Let Him Go" but it was on the Top 40 for only one week.

Just checked the site...info's not up yet. If anyone else has R&R info for it (at least for the 2/8 chart), that would be much appreciated. :)

While we're still looking for R&R info for "Tragedy" (I put in an interlibrary loan request so I hope I can be able to locate that info if chartboy's site is not updated before then) here are this weekend's AT40 shows:

Libra,
Just so you know, for the 1985 Rick Dees show you gave us, "Tragedy" was at #35 the previous week which means "All I Need" was at #32.

(2) 01 04 George Michael - Father Figure (1)NOTES: - With so many droppers this week, Casey didn't read the artists who sang those songs, only the song titles.
- Something about the production on this show gave it an especially crisp presentation this week...maybe it was the bumpers being drawn out, maybe it was some of the songs being drawn out, but something about this week's show just works.
- What's also notable about this week's show is how the four hours are divided up precisely, with the second hour only having an extra song due to the LDD. Still, this kind of exact precision doesn't seem to have been too common among any year in the 80s, so to find it here in this 1988 show is interesting.
- Interestingly, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" received the softer jingle. While this fits for many of Michael Bolton's songs, this one, though slow-paced, has more of a bombastic sound.
- You know...as with the 12-6-86 show, Casey gave not even a hint as to what the new #1 song would be. In fact, in both cases, the only clue that there even was a new #1 was the fact that the previous #1 song had fallen out (although, on the other show it only fell to #2, allowing for a total surprise there). Any reason why he couldn't have been more consistent with this?
- Did the late 80s have an affinity for long credits or something? As with the 11-7-87 show, Casey's credits were especially long this week.
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love" by Tanya Tucker, Paul Davis, & Paul Overstreet
- #1 on the Black Singles chart (2nd week): "Girlfriend"
- #1 on the Dance chart (2nd week): "I Want to Be Your Property" by Blue Mercedes

NOTES: - With so many droppers this week, Casey didn't read the artists who sang those songs, only the song titles.
Not the first time with this. Few times in the early years of AT40, Casey would only mention the song titles that dropped out and not the acts either at the beginning of the show or at the close of either Hours #1 and #2. When Casey began to regularly mention the songs that fell out of the Top 40 in the 1980's (12/17/1983), he most often mentioned the songs and acts falling out of the Top 40 (one exception was on the 6/23/1984 show Premiere aired two years ago (six debuts/droppers that week) and on the 11/15/1986 show, Casey mentioned only the acts and not the songs falling out (seven debuts/droppers)). By 5/30/1987, Casey would habitually mention only the songs falling out and not the acts (there were seven debuts/droppers that week and there have been earlier shows that year with this many debuts including the 3/14/1987 show if Premiere chooses to air it in two weeks). Other dates in which Casey only mentioned the songs (minus acts) dropping out of the Top 40 (with number of debuts/droppers in parentheses) were: 8/15/1987 (7), 9/26/1987 (6; "I Want Your Sex" fell out), 11/7/1987 (5), 11/14/1987 (5), 11/28/1987 (4), 12/19/1987 (5), 12/26/1987 (5), 1/30/1988 (4), 2/27/1988 (7), 5/7/1988 (6), 5/14/1988 (6) and 7/23/1988 (6). Interestingly, Casey mentioned both songs and acts falling out on the 7/4/1987 and 6/12/1988 shows (when there were 6 debuts). Charlie Van Dyke was the only guest host to only mention the songs and not acts falling out on the 10/24/1987 (4) and 12/5/1987 (6) shows. I don't have all the "Casey's Top 40" or "American Top 40" shows (the latter when Casey returned) nor have I managed to listen to all yet but I think Casey frequently mentioned only the songs that dropped many weeks including one CT40 show (8/18/1990 I think) when there were only two - yes, two - debuts.

Interestingly, Casey mentioned both songs and acts falling out on the 7/4/1987 and 6/12/1988 shows (when there were 6 debuts). Heh...guess I haven't really paid attention except for this week, and for whatever reason it stood out to me on this one. Of the above mentioned, I've heard 6/23/84, 11/7/87, and 12/26/87 in addition to this one (obviously). 11/7 I heard on a Sunday after returning from a conference, and the other two aired during a time when I wasn't really looking for such nuances.

I remember when Shadoe Stevens mentioned the droppers in the fall of 1989 when "Me So Horny" fell out. He only mentioned the artists.

The Coast for the initial outing, and WINC as a follow-up.
- No, you're not seeing things...a remix of a song Elvis had recorded was released in 1981, and charted. Twenty-one years later, and...Hmmmmmm, doesn't that sound familiar? ;)
- Story behind "Quarter to Three" as an Extra: There was this band (no name given) who was recording a song, but the record's producer didn't like the way the lead singer was singing. The producer was insisting that the singer sing the song his way, or he'd be out, even claiming that he could pull anyone off the street to sing it better. The lead singer laughed at him, saying, "Who are you kidding? You ain't got no one else to sing it!" He was promptly fired, and the producer lived up to his word - grabbing a guy who went on to have (at the time) eight Top 40 hits. That guy? Gary "U.S." Bonds, whose biggest hit was then played by Casey.
- Just like on 5-3-86, last year, we have another Top 3 final segment. And considering the lack of movement up there this week...it's no wonder!
- Casey gave the date as March 8th in his closing...OOPS! ;)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Don't Stop the Music" by Yarbrough and Peoples
- #1 on the Country chart: "Do You Love as Good as You Look" by The Bellamy Brothers
- #1 on the LP chart: Hi Infidelity by REO Speedwagon
