Yep, I'm at home for Spring Break.
- I listened to this week's show through a pair of stereo headphones with big earpieces - the result was that it felt like I was listening to the show in the car, a very cool effect. :)
- Story behind "I Can't Help Myself" as an Extra: Casey told the story of the man-eating plant from the musical Little Shop of Horrors - the voice of that plant was Levi Stubbs, also the "voice" of The Four Tops; "I Can't Help Myself" is their biggest hit.
- As he did on 11-7, Casey counted down the Top 5 albums: #5 - Control by Janet Jackson, #4 - Invisible Touch by Genesis, #3 - The Way it Is by Bruce Hornsby, #2 - Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi, and #1...well...when you find out what it is, you'll know where this countdown was placed. ;)
- Interestingly, "Lean on Me" received the softer jingle. Actually, the softer jingle was heard quite a bit in the Top 20.
- Nevermind the fact that the Cold War was still going on in 1987, what makes the second LDD so remarkable is the fact that AT40 couldn't be heard over in the USSR - in fact, Lena, the letter writer, acknowledged that she wouldn't be able to hear her own dedication.
- Hmmm...looks like Premiere changed their credits again: There's another new producer, the crew line-up is different, and Larry Morgan added, "Thanks for listening!" at the end.
- #1 on the Album chart: License to Ill by The Beastie Boys
- #1 on the Country chart: "Baby's Got a Brand New Baby" by SKO
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Wait Awhile"

Remember, a few weeks ago when Premiere aired the 1/18/1986 show, Casey mentioned they would send a copy of the show to that one man in prison since he couldn't hear the show where he was located.

Looking at the 70s countdown, 10 of the 40 songs would be or had been #1. I understand that part of it has to do with so many songs topping the chart like the previous year. What is the record for the most would be or had been #1s in a Top 40 countdown?

- This week's Stations of the Week: The Coast FM and WINC.
- Hmmm...I think Premiere might've recorded some new bumpers for their extras; there were a couple that they used tonight that I haven't heard them use before.
- Did the Tina Turner story sound familiar? It should...it was told just two weeks ago on 3/14/87. ;)
- I know that "Eat It" is supposed to be a funny record...but I had to double-take at the early line referring to starving kids in Japan.
- So, some stations have extra songs that play during the stream time that act as time filler, and The Coast is one of them. But every single filler song The Coast played was from 1983! What the hell?
- Casey played a version of "99 Luftballoons" that mixed the German and English versions together.
- Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed that not many #1 songs have had full stories to introduce them at #1. This one's an exception, with a story of how Van Halen were able to draw 3,000 fans one night before even having a record deal.
- The Premiere credits were back to having the same crew as since the beginning of the year, which makes me think that 3/14/87 was just an anomaly.
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "Roll On" by Alabama
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Somebody's Watching Me"
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"

Interesting interview Off Ramp did with John Albert and his experiences with listening to Van Halen. Caught my attention after listening to AT 40 The 80s. Listen to the interview at the link below. It's almost half way in to the podcast. www.scpr.org/programs/offramp/

Given that I have a LOT of notes...I figured I'd give fair warning first. NOTES: - Station of Choice: WHNN - local style, of course. ;)
- Yeah...all the Bee Gees-produced music being in this week's show was enough to get me to listen to this one. There's six Bee Gees-penned songs in the Top 40 this week: Their own trio of hits, plus the Yvonne Elliman, Andy Gibb, and Samantha Sang songs. And, as you can see, three of those make up this week's Top 3 - which incidentally is also the show's final segment.
- This week also sees six songs from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack all in the 40 at once. Just having six songs from the soundtrack reach the 40 was enough to set a record, which Casey pointed out after, um...KC's, song. ;) Those six are the three Bee Gees hits, "If I Can't Have You", "Disco Inferno", and "Boogie Shoes".
- As he did on 1/26/80, Casey pointed out both of this week's Biggest Movers. Why did he eventually stop pointing out ties?
- You know how on 3/24/84 Casey told the Tina Turner story that he also told on 3/14/87, aired just two weeks ago? Well, on this show he told a story similar to that which he did on 7/7/84 last year. On that show, he answered a question about the biggest ever drop within the Top 40 (see my notes on that show for details), the song in question being "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Haaa" by Napoleon XIV. On this show, he answered a question about the song peaking the highest while spending the fewest weeks in the Top 40, and he felt that the answer he gave best answered the spirit of the question. Anyone want to guess what the song was? ;)
- Of note: He mistakenly stated that the song fell to 38, rather than 37. OOPS!
- This week also sees some remarkable chart power: "How Deep is Your Love" spent its 26th week in the 40 this week, and obviously was also the oldest record in the survey. But also to be found in the survey is a record that would spend a then-record 40 weeks on the entire Hot 100 - namely, "I Go Crazy". Casey did point out that "I Go Crazy" was spending its 22nd week in the Top 40.
- Incidentally...this week also seems a little 1982-esque in its droppers: "What's Your Name", "Happy Anniversary", and "The Way You Do the Things You Do", all Top 20 droppers, also fell off from their peak positions! :o
- This particular week in the 70s and 80s also sees an interesting contrast: Here, we have Van Halen peaking with their first Top 40 hit. Over on 3/24/84, they were spending their final week atop the summit with their biggest hit ever. How about that?
- Interestingly, the #1s on Billboard's other charts were read earlier on this show than they were on the 80s show this week - leading into #4 here compared to into #3 there.
- To top it all off...are you ready for one more chart record coming in sixes? Well, Casey pointed out that "Night Fever" was the 5th consecutive #1 song coming from RSO Records, then a chart record. Following that, of course, would be "If I Can't Have You"...and what comes after five? ;)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Bootzilla" by Bootsy's Rubber Band
- #1 on the Country chart: "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" by Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever (10th week)

Libra, since apparently WHNN did not air Premiere's extras, here they were.
"Werewolves Of London" - Warren Zevon (after #28) which debuted at #76 that week. "It's A Heartache" - Bonnie Tyler (after #15) "With A Little Luck" - Paul McCartney & wings (after #4) which was the week's highest debut at #70.

(4) LDD: Bobby Vinton "I Love How You Love Me" from Mike in Beech, ND to his wife Deb. - The softer jingle used to intro #40 sounded like it had been re-recorded...badly.
- Is that the single version of "Kyrie" that has a distinct ending, as opposed to ending in a fade-out? Well, they played the "distinct ending" version this week, and it seems like I haven't heard that done in quite a while. At least they didn't shorten it (or the #1 that immediately preceded it). :)
- "What Have You Done For Me Lately" was interrupted by what sounded like an aborted Emergency Alert System test. FAIL!
- "Rock Me Amadeus" was introed with the story of Mozart's Requiem and had a mix of the German and English versions played, though unlike Nena last week, Casey did not preface this one with notice of a mixed version. It was rather long, too - roughly six minutes long!
- #1 on the Dance chart: "I Can't Wait" (by Nu Shooz)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Kiss"
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney Houston
- #1 on the Country chart: "100% Chance of Rain" by Gary Morris

While I'm irritated that they started early (I tuned in at 8:00 only to discover they were finishing the songwriters story leading into #38), I listened to this one locally, and WCRZ is only all-too fitting for a particular local connection found in this week's show. P.S.: No need to re-post the extras just because WCRZ didn't play them.
- Casey noted that out of the week's top 40 hits, 32 were performed by the artists who wrote them (including the previous and new #1 songs) - an astonishing feat/statistic if there ever was one!
- Casey also erred when he claimed that #37 was the sole live record in the Top 40 this week - "The Party's Over" is the sole studio track on Journey's live album Captured, so it's not a live record either.
- Local connection(s): Technically, there's two of them due to the first LDD being from Escanaba. But the one I'm mainly referring to was Casey identifying a "Great Radio Station" from my hometown of Bay City, MI - WBCM. WBCM was an AM station that is now WMAX, which since June 2001 has simulcast with a station from Ypsilanti featuring programming from the EWTN Global Catholic Radio network. They had formats including MOR (possibly Top 40 as well) and country music all through the 80s, but I wouldn't be surprised if they lost their affiliate status to FM WIOG sometime in late '81, as WIOG was mentioned as signing on as a new affiliate on the 1/16/82 show.
- One more: OK, so there would be one more later on. This one comes from Battle Creek, with new affiliate WWKQ, also an AM, signing on. No idea how long things would last for them affiliate-wise, but they became WOLY, a Christian station (sound familar? ), in 1998. Their owners, the Christian Family Network, failed to file for renewal in 2004, and remained on-the-air illegally through May 27, 2009, when the FCC denied a renewal request and ordered them off-the-air immediately, which they remain today. Incidentally, they originally signed on (under a different ID) within minutes of John F. Kennedy's assassination back in 1963.
- R.I.P.: The epitaph to the Terry Fox story from the second LDD is that he would pass away on June 28, two-and-a-half months later. Accordingly, it would make for a tragic irony if the next '81 show turns out to be from the day before (6/27).
- #1 on the Country chart: "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" by Shelly West & David Frizzell
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Being With You"
- #1 on the Album chart: Paradise Theater by Styx

P.S.: No need to re-post the extras just because WCRZ didn't play them. FWIW, the debut position for "Winning" was mentioned. Other than that, I didn't see anything you would've mentioned in past recaps. For "Hold On Loosely", it was mentioned as being shown on MTV's first day of airing on 8/1/1981. Can anyone verify this? As for "Stars On 45 Medley", Premiere edited out the first chorus going straight to "Sugar, Sugar" and then they faded the second chorus at the end.

There was a certain other station that had this distinction for this week until they were, ahem, disqualified for a certain incident that occurred at the end of the show (see below).
- Note the distinct lack of previous and future #1 hits outside the Top 10 (other than "Flashdance")...that's what having a seven-week #1 will do to the Top 40. ;)
- The first half of the show seemed quite a bit more downbeat, with a lot more of the dynamic hits being found in the Top 20.
- Interesting that both of the LDDs were rockers, even though they both fit the dedications rather well.
- Is it just me, or was the second LDD shortened? I didn't think they did that...
- Interesting how, prior to the final commercial, Casey teased a Dexy's Midnight Runners story without giving away that they'd hit #1.
- This hasn't happened in over a year...but WCRZ did it again! "Summer of '69" played after extra "I Melt With You", which they played after NOT airing any of the other extras. BOOOOO! >:(
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Atomic Dog" by George Clinton
- #1 on the Country chart: "American Made" by The Oak Ridge Boys

Had to run home Friday night, which gave me a convenient listening position.
- Casey's intro to the show seemed kind of hurried, as though he gave the information that he was supposed to, a little bit more, and then moved quickly into #40.
- The 2/27 show a couple months ago seemed to have quite a few R&B hits with sounds to them that would influence records into the 90s, and several other hits as well that didn't quite sound confined to the 80s. In contrast, this show has quite a bit more of an "80s pop" vibe to it.
- Last year's show (4/23) had no softer jingle, and neither does this one. Incidentally, last year had "Piano in the Dark" at #29 getting the standard jingle, and this year had "Endless Summer Nights" at that same position with that jingle.
- Before #32 "Fishnet", Casey told the story of the biggest-selling rock 'n' roll hit of all time, "Rock Around the Clock". We've heard him make this reference before back on 12/6/86, when he played it as an Extra and told of how it was originally the B-side to a song called "Thirteen Women". This time, the story focused more on who wrote the song.
- Do either the AT40 producers from back then or the Premiere producers now have something against "Man in the Mirror"? Seems like every time I hear it in the show, it has some edit that shortens it.
- The #1s on Billboard's other charts were read pretty early again - this time leading into #7! Methinks this was something of a habit in the later 80s...
- #1 on the Country chart: "It's Such a Small World" by Rodney Crowell & Rosanne Cash
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Nite and Day" by Al B. Sure!
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack to Dirty Dancing
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Blue Monday/Touched By the Hand of God" by New Order
