"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)" - The Eurythmics (#46) I thought it was "This", and I had to look it up to verify that it is...though she does sound like she's singing "these". June 11, 1983 LW #1: Irene Cara "Flashdance...What a Feeling"40 -- A Flock of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) (26) 39 -- Chris DeBurgh - Don't Pay the Ferryman (34) 38 40 Alabama - The Closer You Get (38) 37 37 Kenny Rogers - All My Life (37)36 31 Ronnie Milsap - Stranger in My House (23) 35 -- Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Roll Me Away (27) 34 30 INXS - The One Thing (30) LDD: Chris Thompson "If You Remember Me" from Dondi in Anchorage, AK to her father, brother, and sister, who had felt like strangers to her ever since she was separated from them due to her abusive mother winning custody of her in a divorce from her father33 35 Christopher Cross - No Time For Talk (33)32 -- Rod Stewart - Baby Jane (14) Flashback Extra: U2 "New Year's Day"31 23 Toto - I Won't Hold You Back (10) 30 32 Jim Capaldi - That's Love (28) 29 17 Def Leppard - Photograph (12)28 34 DeBarge - All This Love (17) 27 29 The Bee Gees - The Woman in You (24) 26 33 Madness - Our House (7) 25 36 The Police - Every Breath You Take (1)AT40 Extra: The Hollies "Bus Stop"24 27 The Little River Band - We Two (22) 23 26 Champaign - Try Again (23)22 28 The Kinks - Come Dancing (6) Flashback Extra: Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"21 10 Bryan Adams - Straight From the Heart (10) 20 09 Laura Branigan - Solitaire (7) 19 22 Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Something (5) 18 21 Elton John - I'm Still Standing (12) 17 20 Kajagoogoo - Too Shy (5) 16 19 The Tubes - She's a Beauty (10) LDD: Dionne Warwick "I'll Never Love This Way Again" from Nick, who went out to travel the world after reading about a millionaire who died as a miserable miser and did nothing with her life; Nick heard this song performed in Japan, and the audience showed great appreciation for Dionne as she sang it15 18 Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go (4) 14 08 Prince - Little Red Corvette (6) 13 15 Hall & Oates - Family Man (6) 12 13 Journey - Faithfully (12)Flashback Extra: Duran Duran "Is There Something I Should Know?", described as "a week away from hitting the countdown"11 16 Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (2) 10 11 Rick Springfield - Affair of the Heart (9) 09 14 Styx - Don't Let it End (6) 08 12 Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me (8)07 05 Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science (5) 06 06 Michael Jackson - Beat It (1) 05 07 Lionel Richie - My Love (5)04 03 Men at Work - Overkill (3) 03 04 Culture Club - Time (Clock of the Heart) (2) Flashback Extra: Bryan Adams "Cuts Like a Knife", which debuted at #69 that week02 02 David Bowie - Let's Dance (1) 01 01 Irene Cara - Flashdance...What a Feeling (1)NOTES: - Casey had a footnote to the first LDD: Since writing in her letter, Dondi had been able to locate her brother and sister, and she'd been keeping in touch with them.
- Incidentally...it seemed a little odd that such a sad LDD came after a somewhat upbeat song like "The One Thing".
- I feel like "I Won't Hold You Back" would've made a better final song for the first hour, but with both last week's #1 and the first LDD in there, I can see why there wasn't room for it.
- Conversely, "Faithfully" fits very well as the final song in the third hour. I'm normally not a big fan of the song, but somehow it does sound better in these shows.
- A couple of weeks ago I pointed out the complete lack of promotion for the "Top 40 Newcomers of the 1980s" special, which aired that same weekend in 1988. Well, as if my theory that Casey's impending departure meant not having to promote shows needed any more backing...back here in '83, Casey was already promoting the upcoming July 4 special, which would still be three weeks away!
- Casey told a story of how co-founding member Graham Nash's guitar-playing was apparently "so bad" that his fellow Hollies band members wouldn't let him plug it in onstage. Eventually though, he wouldn't need to plug in anyway. "Bus Stop" was played as one of their biggest hits.
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume
- #1 on the Country chart: "Our Love is on the Faultline" by Crystal Gayle

I am listening to AT40: The 70's on Chicago's 94.7 WLS True Oldies right now, I didn't know Helen Reddy's song on the June 11, 1977 AT40 episode was originally a Cilla Black song!

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)" - The Eurythmics (#46) I thought it was "This", and I had to look it up to verify that it is...though she does sound like she's singing "these". LDD: Dionne Warwick "I'll Never Love This Way Again" from Nick, who went out to travel the world after reading about a millionaire who died as a miserable miser and did nothing with her life.Fixed my previous posting. I apologize for the error. Believe Casey would later tell two stories about this miserly millionaire in early 1986 when ABC was charting with "(How To Be A) Millionaire".

- Four large-dropping records among the first six records in the survey? Ouch...but nothing we haven't seen before from 1981.
- Larry Morgan stated that "Double Dutch Bus" spent 8 weeks at #1 on the R&B chart. Not only is that wrong, the song only spent FOUR weeks there. Larry's fudged facts before, but...dayum!
- Just as an aside, "Paint it, Black" was the #1 song from this week (June 18) back in '66.
- Something about "The Breakup Song" as the last extra seems perfect for Kim Carnes's impending breakup with the #1 spot (even if it was only temporary). ;)
- With the full closing theme being played regardless of the year several times lately, Premiere must simply be producing the shows this way now (and props to them for that). But for this one, after the credits finished, there must've been a full minute of just the theme at the end.
- #1 on the Country chart: "But You Know I Love You" by Dolly Parton
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Give it to Me Baby" by Rick James
- #1 on the Album chart: Hi Infidelity by REO Speedwagon (15th non-consecutive week)

When I hear the 1977 and 1978 shows on AT40: The 70's (including the recent past 2 episodes), one of the American Top 40 jingles sounds like a knockoff of the last part vocal of the 1976 Starland Vocal Band song "Afternoon Delight" (I hope "Afternoon Delight" is heard if AT40: The 70's plays a 1976 show in the next few weeks!)

I agree with dth1971, it does sound that way. I'm glad they are playing the best acts of the 70s next week. Wow, he did that count down in 83. It seems a bit early but it should be interesting to see who is where.

- The first three songs in the second hour all had jingles...unusual for any show.
- Remember the 9-19 show from last year? This was another of the few weeks where Casey did mention the George Michael song title.
- Larry Morgan's intro to extra "Luka" was a bit downbeat; not exactly surprising.
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Diamonds"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Diamonds"
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston
- #1 on the Country chart: "Forever and Ever, Amen" by Randy Travis
- NOTE: Casey didn't read the #1s on Billboard's other charts this week! :o It's somewhat fortunate that three out of the four involved countdown artists (two were the same song).

I was listening to KOLA 99..9 do the 80s countdown. They played the Kenny Loggins song and went to break. When they came back, the next song was Gino Vanilli "Living Inside Myself". Ooops! I didn't mind since I missed that part last week. They played it through "Paperback Writer" then after the next break, they started with "Just to See Her Again"

19: LAST FAREWELL – ROGER WHITTAKER (19)
Regarding song #19: The Last Farewell: The opening and closing music was originally heard circa 1976-1981 on local station ID bumpers for Chicago TV station WGN Channel 9 (There's a Chicago connection for anyone in Chicago listening to AT40: The 70's Sunday mornings on WLS 94.7 FM!)

Even though I don't get access to AT40: The 80's in Chicago, this week's AT40: The 80's episode was heard on the week the original AT40 began to air in Chicago on Chicago's 94.7 FM (then Top 40 WYTZ Z-95 FM Chicago), and today Chicago's 94.7 FM, now an oldies station, carries AT40: The 70's on Sunday mornings.

KOLA did it again. They played "Sister Golden Hair" then to break. When they came back, it was ABBA with "Take a Chance". Wow, twice in the same weekend!

I just sent an email to the programmer. I told him as a former radio board operator, I understand how it could happen. I made a few of those type mistakes before.

Here are the AT40 shows for this weekend. Special countdowns for both:
AT40: The '70s this week features the "Top 40 Superstars Of The 1970s" from 7/1/1978
Optional extras this week are from acts that didn't make the cut for this list: "The Way We Were" - Barbra Streisand "Over My Head" - Fleetwood Mac "Super Bad" - James Brown
AT40: The '80s this week features the "Top Acts Of The 1980's So Far" special from 1983.
Optional extras again are from acts that did not make the list (and all song choices are pre-1983): "We Got The Beat" - The Go-Go's "Young Turks" - Rod Stewart "Eye Of The Tiger" - Survivor "I Can't Tell You Why" - The Eagles

I never was a fan of AT40 specials much, but I am listening to the AT40 The 70's 1978 Top 40 Acts of the 70's special on WLS 94.7 in Chicago this Sunday morning.
Regarding the AT40 the 80's episode with the Top 40 Acts of the 80's So Far special from 1983: This had double plays for several artists? This was long before the current AT40 with Ryan Seacrest had DOUBLE PLAYS in its early years!

And here's that 70s special. I opted to check it out this weekend since both specials basically had the same theme, just with different decade lengths (so far). AMERICAN TOP 40 SPECIAL: THE TOP 40 SUPERSTARS OF THE 1970s(Original airdate: July 1, 1978) 40 Earth, Wind, & Fire [Sing a Song] 39 Electric Light Orchestra [Evil Woman] 38 Grand Funk Railroad [We're An American Band] 37 ABBA [Waterloo] 36 The Steve Miller Band [Rock'n Me] 35 Ringo Starr [Photograph] 34 The Captain & Tennille [Love Will Keep Us Together] 33 The Stylistics [Rock 'N' Roll Baby] 32 Carly Simon [That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be] 31 Donny Osmond [Go Away Little Girl] 30 Linda Ronstadt [You're No Good] 29 Rod Stewart [Maggie May] 28 Roberta Flack [Killing Me Softly] 27 The Temptations [Papa Was a Rolling Stone] 26 James Taylor [You've Got a Friend] 25 Paul Simon [Loves Me Like a Rock] 24 War [The Cisco Kid] 23 Bread [Make it With You] 22 Olivia Newton-John [ I Honestly Love You ] 21 Elvis Presley [The Wonder of You] 20 The Spinners [Rubberband Man] 19 Marvin Gaye [What's Going On] 18 Barry Manilow [Mandy] 17 Aretha Franklin [Until You Come Back to Me] 16 Neil Diamond [Cracklin' Rosie] 15 John Denver [Take Me Home Country Roads] 14 The Eagles [New Kid in Town] 13 Al Green [Let's Stay Together] 12 Diana Ross [Ain't No Mountain High Enough] 11 Tony Orlando & Dawn [Knock Three Times] 10 Helen Reddy [You and Me Against the World] 09 Gladys Knight & The Pips [Midnight Train to Georgia] 08 Three Dog Night [Mama Told Me Not to Come] 07 Chicago [Saturday in the Park] 06 The Jackson 5 [ I Want You Back ] 05 Stevie Wonder [Superstition] 04 The Carpenters [Close to You] 03 Wings [Band on the Run] Flashback Extra: James Brown "Super Bad", his highest-charting record in the 70s02 The Bee Gees [Jive Talkin'] 01 Elton John [Philadelphia Freedom]NOTES: - The song played is in brackets after the artist.
- In comparing the two specials, this one surprisingly had a lot less chart facts than the 80s special did, despite covering much more of the decade than the other. The other special also seemed to have more of a "polished" production, but one could make that argument for just about any 80s show versus 70s show.
- This special had more jingles scattered throughout than just the one for the first position of each hour.
- It's clear that 1979 made the ultimate difference in the end, since the Bee Gees were ranked #2 here in this special, yet Casey had them ranked at #1 among his facts in the 80s special. It's also clear that the final result must've been close, since Casey also stated that Elton was leading by 1256 points here.
- Turns out WHNN did make room for an extra this time around...though they started a couple minutes past 8 and didn't finish till 11:09.
- Surprisingly, there was no drumroll in the build-up to #1...even the 80s special had it.
EDIT 5/26/14: Oh FFS. [ I Honestly Love You ], unspaced, triggers an italic tag? Seriously? And I Want You Back too?

All these songs hit #1 and likely by my estimates accumulated enough points to overtake Elton John. My comparison later.

The Bee Gees vs. Elton John: The 1970's
I thought I'd compile all the totals from the chart hits between the Bee Gees and Elton John during the 1970s. Point totals are as follows:
First are Hot 100 points. This is derived from Vince's formula from the Fun & Games board (which AT40 & Billboard were using for their year-end charts at the time). Bonus points are 50 points for week at #1, 50 + 100 = 150 for 2 weeks at #1, 50 + 100 + 150 = 300 for 3 weeks at #1, etc...
After that are points solely based on the Top 40 which I borrowed from deshanw's AT40 formula in the CHR/Pop Thread.
The Bee Gees
Hot 100 points 17 If I Only Had My Mind On Something Else 7 I.O.I.O. 1085 Lonely Days 1798 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? 277 Don't Want To Live Inside Myself 568 My World 750 Run To Me 406 Alive 14 Saw A New Morning 17 Mr. Natural 1419 Jive Talkin' 1183 Nights On Broadway 1111 Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) 1461 You Should Be Dancing 1654 Love So Right 928 Boogie Child 633 Edge Of The Universe 2929 How Deep Is Your Love 2592 Stayin' Alive 3490 Night Fever 1675 Too Much Heaven 1424 Tragedy 1292 Love You Inside Out 26,730 Total Points

Top 40 Points
420 Your Song 22 Friends 67 Levon 418 Rocket Man 221 Honky Cat 901 Crocodile Rock 658 Daniel 230 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting 693 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 923 Bennie And The Jets 493 Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me 461 The Bitch Is Back 595 Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 974 Philadelphia Freedom 512 Someone Saved My Life Tonight 688 Island Girl 118 Grow Some Funk Of Your Own/I Feel Like A Bullet 764 Don't Go Breaking My Heart 506 Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word 35 Bite Your Lip (Get Up And Dance) 20 Ego 79 Part Time Love 451 Mama Can't Buy You Love 25 Victim Of Love 10,274 Points
So using the Hot 100 and Top 40 Tabulations, it was clear that the Bee Gees were clearly the top recording act of the 1970's.

(1 point for the bottom position and so forth on up to #1)
