The Bee Gees vs. Elton John: The 1970's I thought I'd compile all the totals from the chart hits between the Bee Gees and Elton John during the 1970s. Point totals are as follows: First are Hot 100 points. This is derived from Vince's formula from the Fun & Games board (which AT40 & Billboard were using for their year-end charts at the time). Bonus points are 50 points for week at #1, 50 + 100 = 150 for 2 weeks at #1, 50 + 100 + 150 = 300 for 3 weeks at #1, etc... After that are points solely based on the Top 40 which I borrowed from deshanw's AT40 formula in the CHR/Pop Thread. The Bee Gees Hot 100 points 17 If I Only Had My Mind On Something Else 7 I.O.I.O. 1085 Lonely Days 1798 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? 277 Don't Want To Live Inside Myself 568 My World 750 Run To Me 406 Alive 14 Saw A New Morning 17 Mr. Natural 1419 Jive Talkin' 1183 Nights On Broadway 1111 Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) 1461 You Should Be Dancing 1654 Love So Right 928 Boogie Child 633 Edge Of The Universe 2929 How Deep Is Your Love 2592 Stayin' Alive 3490 Night Fever 1675 Too Much Heaven 1424 Tragedy 1292 Love You Inside Out 26,730 Total Points Top 40 Points 584 Lonely Days 894 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? 112 My World 118 Run To Me 22 Alive 726 Jive Talkin' 461 Nights On Broadway 272 Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) 731 You Should Be Dancing 763 Love So Right 232 Boogie Child 53 Edge Of The Universe 1528 How Deep Is Your Love 1340 Stayin' Alive 1259 Night Fever 936 Too Much Heaven 863 Tragedy 683 Love You Inside Out 11,577 Total Points Elton John 38 Border Song 1014 Your Song 502 Friends 611 Levon 326 Tiny Dancer 1095 Rocket Man 733 Honky Cat 1726 Crocodile Rock 1184 Daniel 872 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting 1340 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 1547 Bennie & The Jets 1019 Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me 989 The Bitch Is Back 1199 Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 1804 Philadelphia Freedom 979 Someone Saved My Life Tonight 1507 Island Girl 654 Grow Some Funk Of Your Own/I Feel Like A Bullet 1957 Don't Go Breaking My Heart 1070 Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word 369 Bite Your Lip (Get Up And Dance) 406 Ego 579 Part Time Love 1308 Mama Can't Buy You Love 486 Victim Of Love 25,314 Points Top 40 Points 420 Your Song 22 Friends 67 Levon 418 Rocket Man 221 Honky Cat 901 Crocodile Rock 658 Daniel 230 Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting 693 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 923 Bennie And The Jets 493 Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me 461 The Bitch Is Back 595 Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 974 Philadelphia Freedom 512 Someone Saved My Life Tonight 688 Island Girl 118 Grow Some Funk Of Your Own/I Feel Like A Bullet 764 Don't Go Breaking My Heart 506 Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word 35 Bite Your Lip (Get Up And Dance) 20 Ego 79 Part Time Love 451 Mama Can't Buy You Love 25 Victim Of Love 10,274 Points So using the Hot 100 and Top 40 Tabulations, it was clear that the Bee Gees were clearly the top recording act of the 1970's. Nice comparison for Elton John VS. Bee Gees!

I'd thought that "Stayin' Alive" would've had more points than any of their other hits, given it may be the Bee Gees' most recognizable song.

Here are this weekend's shows
AT40: The '70s this week features 7/8/1972
Seven songs debuted this week: "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" - The Hollies (#33) "Coconut" - Nilsson (#34) "Happiest Girl In The Whole U.S.A." - Donna Fargo (#35) "Sealed With A Kiss" - Bobby Vinton (#36) "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (yes, it made the Top 40!) - Paul McCartney & Wings (#38) "Hold Her Tight" - The Osmonds (#39) "Hold Your Head Up" - Argent (#40)
Seven songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Morning Has Broken" - Cat Stevens (#24) "Walking In The Rain With The One I Love" - Love Unlimited (#31) "Tumbling Dice" - The Rolling Stones (#33) "It's Going To Take Some Time" - The Carpenters (#35) "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - Roberta Flack (#36) "I Saw The Light" - Todd Rundgren (#37) "Immigration Man" - Graham Nash & David Crosby (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" - Looking Glass (#27 to #12) Biggest Dropper: "I'll Take You There" - The Staple Singers (#12 to #25)
Original extras: "It's Too Late" - Carole King This song will be played as one of the optional extras.
Premiere optional extras: "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" - Jim Croce (#50) "It's Too Late" - Carole King (original AT40 extra) "Popcorn" - Hot Butter (#89; debuted)
AT40: The '80s is from 7/13/1985
Three songs debuted this week: "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times' Sake)" - Freddie Jackson (#35) "Summer Of '69" - Bryan Adams (#38) "State Of The Heart" - Rick Springfield (#40)
Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Little By Little" - Robert Plant (#36) "Suddenly" - Billy Ocean (#37) "Everything She Wants" - Wham! (#39)
Biggest Mover: "Who's Holding Donna Now" - DeBarge (#31 to #21) Biggest Dropper: "In My House" - Mary Jane Girls (#20 to #37)
Original extras: Your Song - Elton John (AT40 Hall Of Fame feature)
Long Distance Dedications: "You're The Inspiration" - Chicago "I Will" - The Beatles
Premiere optional extras: "Take On Me" - A-ha! (#90; debuted) "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" - Tina Turner (#41) "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" - John Parr (#42) "Into The Groove" - Madonna
Remember when Premiere played the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" a few weeks ago on the 5/27/1978 broadcast? Well, believe it or not "Into The Groove" didn't even chart in the Hot 100 either (and this was the height of Madonna mania at that!). "Into The Groove" did hit the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart and on Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 (using Radio & Records), "Into The Groove" was in the last of its' two weeks at its' peak position of #6.

(5) 04 05 Survivor - The Search is Over (4)03 03 Prince & The Revolution - Raspberry Beret (2) Flashback Extra: Madonna "Into the Groove", which, though it never charted on the Hot 100, received tons of radio airplay during the summer of '8502 01 Phil Collins - Sussudio (1)01 02 Duran Duran - A View to a Kill (1)NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WMMX. There was a country station that was bound and determined to force its way into the signal at 92.1, which in turn forced me to give up on WIDL and utilize a streamed station instead. (BOO! >:()
- This was also the weekend of Live Aid, though there was no mention of it anywhere in the show. Ironically, new #1 song "A View to a Kill" featured an off-key falsetto note from Simon Le Bon when performed there. (OOPS! ;))
- Like the 5/15/82 show earlier this year, this show was also originally aired in 2007, before this thread was created.
- Casey described the teacher that Huey Lewis played in Back to the Future as a "square". Even though he rejected the Michael J. Fox-led band who played their hit "The Power of Love" in that movie, he's still a "hip" guy, if y'know what I mean. ;)
- Casey shortchanged Dead or Alive by saying "You Spin Me Round" only went to #2 in England; it hit #1 over there. Big OOPS. ;)
- "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" received the softer jingle in this show, yet it received the standard one back on 5/11 (and the softer one was given to others that week). It also had a verse cut out this week. (BOO! >:()
- The "Hall of Fame" feature was a short-lived feature in which AT40 honored different artists for their achievements. This would be the last week with a Hall of Fame song, however.
- From the "The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same" files: Back on 5/11, one of the extras was Tina Turner's "Show Some Respect", which was #41 that week. Now, this week it's "We Don't Need Another Hero", which was...you guessed it, #41 this week!
- Interestingly, both Tears For Fears songs had jingles this week, though the more uptempo "Shout" very obviously had the standard one.
- "Into the Groove" had either a different mix played, or the version that radio plays nowadays is itself a remix.
- A snippet of a James Bond intro theme played in lieu of a drumroll to introduce "A View to a Kill" as the new #1 song.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Hangin' on a String" by Loose Ends
- #1 on the Dance chart: "19"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Forgiving You is Easy" by Willie Nelson
- #1 on the Album chart: Songs From the Big Chair by Tears For Fears

Things I learned from this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode from July 8, 1972 I listened to this morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * The previous week on July 1, 1972 AT40 had a special of the Top 40 Acts of the Rock Era, and during the special there were 3 debuts and "Song Sung Blue" by Neil Diamond moved into the #1 spot. * The B side of the #38 song "Mary Had a Little Lamb" by Paul McCartney and Wings was "Little Woman Love". * Regarding one of the question letters regarding the act with most consecutive weeks in the Top 40 - Pat Boone. During 1972 Pat Boone was a spokesperson for the American Dairy Association doing radio and TV commercials for milk. (This is a YouTube link to a video with an original commercial break from 1972 featuring Pat Boone for the "Every body needs milk" campaign: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYrc87spGUg - The commercial is at the 4:15 mark) * Casey gave a story to tie in with the Cher "Living in a House Divided" song that Sonny and Cher planned to appear on a float in the 1967 Tournament of Roses Parade but were fired for unexpected reasons and replaced by Buck Owens. * Procol Harum's "Conquisitor" is a live re-recording of a song the group originally did in 1967 but the single flopped the first time. * For the #6 song Casey said 2 different titles for it: "Troglodyte" or "Cave Man". * And as one of the 5 new AT40 stations joining AT40 that July 8, 1972 week, Casey mentioned WCFL in Chicago started carrying AT40 that week (I guess WCFL in Chicago, longtime rival to WLS Musicradio 89 AM, carried AT40 for about 2-3 years. WCFL, a Top 40 AM station for many years, became for a brief time in 1976-1978 beautiful music, then back to Top 40 until 1982, then switched to adult standards (similar to Music of Your Life or something like that), then became in the mid 1980's a Christian station, then became in the late 1980's to 1990's WLUP The Loop AM 1000, then became WMVP Sports radio, and today WMVP is an affiliate of ESPN Radio). Also: In my lifetime for over a month listening to AT40 The 70's on WLS 94.7 Oldies FM, I heard episodes from the years 1972, 1975, 1977, and 1978. But when will AT40: The 70's air again episodes from 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1976, and 1979?

I think September or October 1985. That's why I didn't find it then...I didn't check that far. This made me double-check again; it was September 7.

WCFL actually aired AT40 from 7/1/1972 up until the end of the year when they cancelled the show (which was buried in a ridiculous Saturday late night time slot where Pete Battistini and a few others bothered to be up that late). BTW next week Premiere will feature 7/14/1979 but only the last three hours with Hour #1 being skipped.

I know in the early 1980's AT40 was heard in the Chicago area on then Soft Rock WBBM 96.3 FM before moving to WLS AM 890 from 1982 to 1987 and then to WYTZ Z-95 Chicago from 1987 until 1991.

After WCFL dropped AT40 at the end of 1972, what Chicago station picked it up for 1973? I know in the early 1980's AT40 was heard in the Chicago area on then Soft Rock WBBM 96.3 FM before moving to WLS AM 890 from 1982 to 1987 and then to WYTZ Z-95 Chicago from 1987 until 1991. AT40 would not be heard in the Chicagoland area for a year and a half after WCFL cancelled the show. WDHF picked up AT40 in June 1974 (believed they changed call letters to WMET during their AT40 run if I'm not mistaken). WBBM picked up AT40 in 1979.

Here’s a minutia-seeking question for you chartologists ... in the ‘golden era” of AT40 (say 1970-1989) has a single ever spent only one week on the Top 40 chart, during a weekend when a special countdown (Top 40 of the 1970s, Top 40 Christmas songs, etc) aired ... so as to never have the honor of the song ever played on AT40 ???

^ There's also a handful of songs that won't be played by Premiere (except maybe as extras) because their sole week in the 40 was a guest-hosted show. Two such songs are "Don't Leave Me This Way" by The Communards (3/7/87, #40) and "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure (1/9/88, #40), though I remember seeing that the latter was in fact an extra on one show. July 16, 1988 40 -- Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistible (2) 39 35 Nia Peeples - Trouble (35) 38 32 George Michael - One More Try (1) 37 -- Tracy Chapman - Fast Car (6) 36 -- George Michael - Monkey (1) 35 40 Whitney Houston - Love Will Save the Day (9) 34 26 Robert Plant - Tall Cool One (25) 33 38 Aerosmith - Rag Doll (17) 32 20 Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly (12) 31 23 Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning (17) Flashback Extra: Paula Abdul "Knocked Out"30 19 Rick Astley - Together Forever (1) 29 36 The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker - The Twist (16) 28 33 Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky (28)27 34 Climie Fisher - Love Changes (Everything) (23) 26 18 Brenda K. Starr - I Still Believe (13) 25 29 Billy Ocean - The Colour of Love (17) 24 28 The Contours - Do You Love Me (11)* 23 31 Chicago - I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love (3)22 25 Johnny Kemp - Just Got Paid (10) 21 27 Elton John - I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That (2) 20 11 The Jets - Make it Real (4) Flashback Extra: Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine"19 24 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - 1-2-3 (3) 18 22 Sade - Paradise (16) 17 21 DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand (12) 16 09 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Valley Road (5) 15 05 Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana (1) 14 17 Terence Trent D'Arby - Sign Your Name (4) LDD: Bertie Higgins "Key Largo" from Jody in North Carolina for her family; it was her father's favorite song, he died of cancer when she was 13, and her letters back and forth between her and her sister Liz helped her to deal with his death13 07 Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat (1) 12 13 Rod Stewart - Lost in You (12)11 15 Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour (9) Flashback Extra: New Kids on the Block "Please Don't Go Girl"10 06 Poison - Nothin' But a Good Time (6) 09 16 Eric Carmen - Make Me Lose Control (3) 08 14 Breathe - Hands to Heaven (2) 07 10 Al B. Sure! - Nite and Day (7)06 12 Steve Winwood - Roll With It (1) 05 08 Richard Marx - Hold On to the Nights (1) 04 04 INXS - New Sensation (3) 03 03 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me (2) Flashback Extra: The Moody Blues "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", described as "just a week away from hitting the countdown"02 02 Pebbles - Mercedes Boy (2) 01 01 Cheap Trick - The Flame (1)*1988 peak. NOTES: - In his description for the debut of "Simply Irresistible", Casey stated it was from the "dapper English gentleman who's 'Addicted to Love' and 'Didn't Mean to Turn You On'." You think it's a coincidence, seeing that those two, plus the debut song, make up his famous video trilogy from the 80s? ;)
- The first hour had several intense-paced songs in it (similar to the 5-28 show several weeks ago), a marked contrast to Casey's somewhat subdued demeanor during that hour. As with the previous show, the "poppier" songs came later on in the show, though they started filtering in earlier this time.
- Speaking of his impending departure, ABC/Watermark were no doubt preparing for it through their production of the show - "Casey's Coast to Coast" wasn't heard at all among the show bumpers this week (only for the Premiere extras past the first); instead, "The Hits From Coast to Coast" was used everywhere.
- Did "Rag Doll" have a single version with a slightly different production, or has it recently been remastered with altered production? It sounded different in this week's countdown than I'm used to hearing whenever I hear it these days. It did seem like it was also shortened this week, but that doesn't factor into the "different" production that I'm talking about.
- Larry Morgan didn't mention the fact that "Knocked Out" missed the Top 40 as he usually does with extras that have missed.
- "The Colour of Love" received the standard jingle this week, though "Make it Real" and "Sign Your Name" did not.
- Speaking of "Make it Real", Casey gave The Jets a little too much credit in the outro when he said they took it to #3. OOPS! ;)
- Larry Morgan pointed out that "Sweet Child O' Mine" would be announced at #1 by Shadoe Stevens (!) in his intro for that song.
- Casey pointed out how "I Should Be So Lucky" had already hit #1 in six different countries and how "Nite and Day" had hit #1 on the soul chart and was looking for a chance to hit #1 on the pop chart...and as you can see, both songs peaked this week. Womp womp womp... ;)
- Casey's story to lead into "New Sensation" talked about Hong Kong, where Michael Hutchence was living. He pointed out that the British government's lease on Hong Kong would expire in 1997, and Casey mentioned that that would mean changes for the people there, including Michael. Anyone remember what happened in late '97?
- #1 on the Country chart: "If You Change Your Mind" by Roseanne Cash
- #1 on the Dance chart: "What's On Your Mind" by Information Society
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Paradise"
- #1 on the Album chart: OU812 by Van Halen
You know how, back in February for the 2/9/85 show, I had a comparison with that week's R&R chart courtesy of the following week's Rick Dees Weekly Top 40? Well, it so happens that the 7/23/88 countdown is available online, so...it's that time again! July 23, 1988 (chart of July 15) Sure Shot: Michael Jackson "Another Part of Me"40 -- Pat Benatar - All Fired Up (25) 39 -- Kenny Loggins - Nobody's Fool (6) 38 23 Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana (1) 37 31 Brenda K. Starr - I Still Believe (15) 36 37 Corey Hart - In Your Soul (36)35 38 Taylor Dayne - I'll Always Love You (6) 34 39 REO Speedwagon - Here With Me (16) 33 22 Poison - Nothin' But a Good Time (11) 32 29 The Jets - Make it Real (5) 31 40 Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine (1)30 SS Huey Lewis & The News - Perfect World (2) 29 20 Rod Stewart - Lost in You (18) 28 36 Van Halen - When It's Love (5) 27 35 Tracy Chapman - Fast Car (8) 26 34 Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistible (3) 25 14 Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat (1) 24 28 Aerosmith - Rag Doll (19) 23 26 Climie Fisher - Love Changes (Everything) (23)22 27 The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker - The Twist (17) 21 19 Sade - Paradise (19) 20 09 Al B. Sure! - Nite and Day (8) 19 25 Whitney Houston - Love Will Save the Day (7) 18 18 DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand (18)17 21 Johnny Kemp - Just Got Paid (11) 16 24 George Michael - Monkey (1) 15 04 Pebbles - Mercedes Boy (2) 14 16 Billy Ocean - The Colour of Love (14)13 17 Elton John - I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That (2) 12 15 Chicago - I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love (3) 11 13 The Contours - Do You Love Me (8) 10 11 Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour (10)09 12 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - 1-2-3 (5) 08 10 Terence Trent D'Arby - Sign Your Name (3) 07 01 Cheap Trick - The Flame (1) 06 08 Eric Carmen - Make Me Lose Control (5) 05 07 Breathe - Hands to Heaven (3) 04 02 INXS - New Sensation (2) 03 05 Richard Marx - Hold On to the Nights (2) 02 06 Steve Winwood - Roll With It (1) 01 03 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me (1)OFF: Rick Astley - Together Forever (LW: #33) Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Valley Road (LW: #32) Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky (LW: #30) NOTES: - Rick didn't give the chart movement for "I Still Believe", and there's no site that yet has the info for its run after falling from the Top 20. The pre-Top 20 info for "When It's Love" isn't available either...but since I know that it debuted the week before, since I know what last week's 40, 39, 38, 37, and 35 were, and since "Sweet Child O' Mine", up 9, was the highest-jumping hit of the week, I was able to do a process-of-elimination for that one.
- The Countdown Challenge featured identifying a mystery voice - it sounded like Cyndi Lauper, but I'm not 100% sure. The Challenge winner guessed Elton John for a different challenge that was basically identical to this week's except for the previous challenge voice being Elton John.
- Rick counted down the top 5 songs this week in England: #5 - "Roses Are Red" by The Mac Band, #4 - "I Don't Want to Talk About It" by Everything But the Girl, #3 - "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa, #2 - "Dirty Diana", and #1 - "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" by Glenn Medeiros.
- In-studio guest Rod Stewart was introduced as a lead-in to his song at #29, along with a montage of his hits up until then.
- "Rag Doll" had the exact same production (other than not being shortened) as it did in this week's AT40, which further makes me think that there was a single version.
- Rick played the Shep Pettibone mix of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That".

So that's why you wanted to know about that info on the Fun & Games Board.

- "Rag Doll" had the exact same production (other than not being shortened) as it did in this week's AT40, which further makes me think that there was a single version.
- Rick played the Shep Pettibone mix of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That".
Maybe in the future Premiere could play some AT40 guest host episodes in its AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's shows. (With luck, Premiere could air on AT40: The 80's the June 1989 AT40 episode where Debbie Gibson guest hosted for Shadoe Stevens in 2012!)

When I listened to the 3 hour AT40: The 70's episode from July 14, 1979 on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this weekend, it gave me flashbacks of a decade ago when the then Chicago 94.7 FM which was then 80's/Hot AC was playing the old AT40 1980's Flashback shows starting with the second hour. This 1979 episode, originally a 4 hour episode, started with the second hour so that the first hour was not played.
And my thoughts of what I learned from the July 14, 1979 AT40 episode: * The previous week on July 7-8, 1979 AT40 had the Top 40 disco songs special (although for the Cleveland, Ohio area on WGCL G-98 FM since the station was anti disco the station did its own AT40 with Townsend Coleman guest hosting) * Casey gave a good report on the town of Henrietta, Oklahoma not allowing disco dancing in a town that prohibited dancing until the rule was lifted in 1978. (I bet it wasn't the inspiration for the 1984 movie "Footloose"). * Casey even mentioned in a story with a wedding featuring 3 Beatles members plus members of Cream and Mick Jagger that John Lennon was absent since he was about to work on his first new album (That John Lennon album, Double Fantasy, was released November 1980, 1 month before John Lennon tragically passed away.) * Kiss uses precautions for safety lasers on thier touring shows? * RAYDIO is a hybrid name for Ray Parker Jr. (lead singer) and RADIO. * Poco is Spanish for "scant" and "few". * McFadden and Whitehead of "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" fame were originally stockboys in the Epic records headquarters. * A line in the #4 Rickie Lee Jones song "Chuck E.'s in Love" mentions "P.L.P." which stands for "public leaning post" or "hanging around". * Well, I did get to hear the 1 Long Distance Dedication ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life") and the 1 AT40 Archives 1974 song ("I Honestly Love You"). But why leave out the other AT40 Archives song from 1974 ("Nothing From Nothing") as an optional extra? WLS 94.7 FM doesn't play the optional AT40: The 70's extras!

That same process-of-eliminations should put "I Still Believe" at #31. So that's why you wanted to know about that info on the Fun & Games Board. You know what, you're right...I didn't bother looking up the droppers until right before I posted it, so I didn't think to go back and check what position was missing. Thanks!

I feel like Casey saved this to use as a story in a future show - as he has done before with other stories read in multiple shows - though in this case, I don't remember what show it would've been.
- One thing I have to say about "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" is that the original recording is actually a fun song to listen to. In its later form in later recordings and endless uses in modern-day commercials, it's become something horribly obnoxious...UGH!
- Story behind "It's My Party" as an Extra: In this case, it was "Whatever Happened to the last white solo singer to hit #1 on the Soul chart?" At the time of this show, that was Lesley Gore. That would've made quite the story to accompany it when it would later be an Archive extra on December 13, though due to the format of the AT40 Archives feature, I feel like Casey probably wouldn't have had time for that. "It's My Party" was the song in question that topped the Soul chart, though Casey stopped short of mentioning that - he introduced the song as her biggest hit.
- "I'm Sorry" was the #1 song from this week back in 1960.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Take Your Time (Do it Right)"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Barroom Buddies" by Merle Haggard & Clint Eastwood
- #1 on the Album chart: Emotional Rescue by The Rolling Stones

The AT40 show July 26, 1980 was originally planned to be aired as part of the 2001-2002 AT40 Flashback series in July 2002, but because of Premiere nixing 1980 and 1981 shows at the time it was replaced by a 1988 AT40 Flashback show.

Thoughts I learned from this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode from July 21, 1973 when I listened to it on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago: * Was there a tease in the first hour for an upcoming segment before a commercial break that never happened? * There was a bleep censoring a swear word in Charlie Daniels' "Uneasy Rider" song. * No question letters this episode? * It was nice to notice the reissue of Bobby Pickett's 1962 #1 hit "Monster Mash" making the 1973 AT40 chart even though Halloween is 3 months away. * I also liked the drop piece of the first Simon and Garfunkel record they made under the name Tom and Jerry - "Hey Schoolgirl" - to tie in with Paul Simon's #5 song "Kodachrome". * In the AT40 heard in 50 states and around the world plug segments: 1) WPIX FM New York City was mentioned (How many years has WPIX FM in NYC carried AT40 before moving to 99X, then WNBC AM, then WPLJ FM?). 2) You could hear AT40 in 1973 on Armed Forces Radio and the Japan Far East Network. 3) Casey did a lot of North Carolina mentions of radio stations that were carrying AT40 in July 1973. * And I wonder: Does Premiere keep intact in 1973 AT40 broadcasts in the AT40: The 70's shows aired the thing following the #1 song where Casey makes a prediction about the next week's #1 song?
