1) WPIX FM New York City was mentioned (How many years has WPIX FM in NYC carried AT40 before moving to 99X, then WNBC AM, then WPLJ FM?). WPIX aired AT40 from 5/8/1971 up until sometime in 1978 (99X carried AT40 on 5/20/1978).

I was curious about what Casey said before playing "Playground in my Mind" that the boy "Michael" would be recording songs of his own. It turns out he did but nothing happened with them. He passed away at the end of 2009.

His real name was Philip Vance. Casey said his real name when he introduced the song. I did my research and talked to his sister on Facebook.

Things I learned from listening to this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode regarding the AT40 episode from July 31, 1976 this weekend when I heard it on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * Nice story by Casey to tie in to Steve Miller's "Take the Money and Run" that Steve Miller was touring with a fractured neck until his doctor told Mr. Miller to temporary stay in bed and don't tour. * 2 brothers in 2 different duos in two seperate records this week: Dan Seals as part of England Dan and John Ford Corley ("I Really Love to See You Tonight") and Jim Seals as part of Seals and Crofts ("Get Closer"). * Casey did 2 mistake mentions of songs: Calling Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" as "Play THE Funky Music" and calling "I Really Love To See You Tonight" as "I Really Love to See You IN A MINUTE". * For "Something He Can Feel" by Aretha Franklin, Casey mentioned it was hit #51, but is that regarding Aretha's 51st. song to make the Hot 100 at that time? * Lou Rawls was born in Chicago, IL.? That's amazing! * 3 QUESTION LETTERS: One regarding to the biggest classic music adaption to hit #1 (Tsychoscky's Piano Concerto by Freddy Martin in 1941), one regarding to the state mentioned in the titles of the most #1 hits (The state of Georgia with 3), and the most popular southpaw/left handed singer (Paul McCartney). * There was even a story on whatever became of the singer who sang "Let Me Go Lover" in 1954. * FINALLY: You'd hear the rare "NOW ON WITH THE COUNTDOWN" jingle in these 1976 AT40 shows.

'Let Me Go Lover' was sung by Joan Weber.
IIRC, Casey's done a special countdown dedicated to 'the world's biggest disappearing act', and this tune/artist has usually been at or near the top of his survey over the years.

Although obviously most of the "light" poppy songs in that show were also in this one, most of the rockier or slower songs in the survey were either bunched together or bunched with each other, thus the overall flow of the show was much different.
- Once again, I had to deal with the attack of the rabid country station on the signal - only this time, I didn't have the internet connection to switch to a streaming signal. At least I was able to make it through the show this time.
- I had listened to "When the Heart Rules the Mind" on a Rick Dees countdown some weeks prior to this weekend; it sounded much better on this show compared to that one.
- The last segment in the first hour contained #32, #31, and #30 - I had expected "Friends and Lovers" to wrap up the hour, and was quite surprised when "Baby Love" snuck in there. Later on, I was kind of expecting "Stuck With You" to end up shortened, but other than fading out during the last chorus, that didn't happen, either.
- From the "Have Dedication, Will Travel!" files: In the teaser to the first LDD, Casey referred to an Indiana girl. Prior to reading the dedication letter, however, he stated that she was from Iowa. Then, in the outro, he stated Indiana again. Gee, which is it? ;)
- That credit for the second extra didn't come from me - apparently it was the song's full credit, according to Larry Morgan. He also described it was one of the longest credits in chart history - and while that is pretty lengthy, it certainly doesn't compare to the full Beatles Medley back on 6-20-81. ;)
- You know...every so often, the show has an LDD that, at first glance at the playlist, makes you think it particularly odd to be a LDD song. Then, you hear the dedication letter, and it's no wonder that the song was picked. Such was the case back on 5-28-88 with "Rock Me Amadeus", and this week, it's "I Wanna Be a Cowboy".
- Chart Power!: Just a few weeks ago on 7-13-85, we heard about how Madonna was chasing Donna Summer's record of 8 consecutive Top 5 hits. Well, this week we heard about how she tied Brenda Lee's rock-era record of 9 consecutive Top 10 hits with "Papa Don't Preach". Incidentally, she not only broke both those ties, she extended them all the way through 1989's "Cherish", resulting in 17 consecutive Top 10 hits, all but one of those also a Top 5 hit.
- It's rather fitting to have "Heaven in Your Eyes" as one of the extras this week, with the other two hits from Top Gun currently in the Top 40, and the soundtrack album sitting at #1 this week.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Nobody in His Right Mind Would've Left Her" by George Strait
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Closer Than Close" by Jean Carne
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Rumors"
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack to Top Gun
You know how a couple of weeks before when I matched up that week's AT40 to a Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 countdown with that week's R&R chart date? Well, this week it's being matched up with the countdown date: Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 - August 2, 1986 Sure Shot: Huey Lewis & The News "Stuck on You"40 -- Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) (5) 39 -- Klymaxx - Man Size Love (17) 38 29 Howard Jones - No One is to Blame (1) 37 -- The Monkees - That Was Then, This is Now (26) 36 40 John Cougar Mellencamp - Rumbleseat (33) 35 27 The Fixx - Secret Separation (26) 34 39 David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose (23) 33 19 The Moody Blues - Your Wildest Dreams (11) Special Request: The Beatles "Twist and Shout"32 -- Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson - Friends and Lovers (3) 31 37 Mike & The Mechanics - Taken In (22) 30 38 Regina - Baby Love (9) 29 16 Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) (1) 28 34 Device - Hanging On a Heart Attack (23) 27 17 Simply Red - Holding Back the Years (3) 26 13 El DeBarge - Who's Johnny? (5) 25 33 Miami Sound Machine - Words Get in the Way (9) 24 31 Gavin Christopher - One Step Closer to You (23) 23 15 The Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene (15) 22 24 Andy Taylor - Take it Easy (22)21 26 Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom (7) 20 22 Jeffrey Osborne - You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song) (15) 19 28 Berlin - Take My Breath Away (2) 18 07 Janet Jackson - Nasty (5) 17 20 The Outfield - All the Love in the World (16) 16 25 The Timex Social Club - Rumors (7) 15 18 Journey - Suzanne (14) 14 21 Bananarama - Venus (3) 13 23 Lionel Richie - Dancing On the Ceiling (1)12 09 Billy Joel - Modern Woman (9) 11 14 Wham! - The Edge of Heaven (9) 10 10 The Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) (10)09 06 Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone (3) 08 12 Steve Winwood - Higher Love (1) 07 11 Jermaine Stewart - We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (7)WT40 Extra: Paul McCartney "Press"06 08 Belinda Carlisle - Mad About You (4) 05 05 Rod Stewart - Love Touch (5)04 02 Genesis - Invisible Touch (1) 03 04 Madonna - Papa Don't Preach (1) 02 01 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (1) 01 03 Peter Cetera - Glory of Love (1)DROPPERS: Robert Palmer - Hyperactive (LW: #36) The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Tuff Enuff (LW: #35) Van Halen - Dreams (LW: #32) GTR - When the Heart Rules the Mind (LW: #30) NOTES: - The Countdown Challenge was to identify a "mystery voice" who could be from music, movies, or television. Who it was, I have no idea. A previous Challenge was also a mystery voice, who in this case was Julian Lennon. What's noteworthy about the winner of that Challenge is that she was only 10!
- There seemed to be a lot of obnoxious "antics" coming from Rick's studios this particular weekend.
- The in-studio guest was The Blow Monkeys.
- There was a "dramatic reading" segment where lyrics from "Sledgehammer" were read; however, this happened after #16 "Rumors", proving that Rick was about as gifted (or not ) with timing as Casey was.
- Speaking of "Rumors", Rick claimed that the Timex Social Club was one guy, singer Michael Marshall, while Casey referred to a group of four guys. Guess who was actually correct? Well, it certainly wasn't the man with, as his show's intro claims, "powers and abilities...FAR BELOW those of mortal male and female people!" (Sorry, Rick!) ;)
- The first segment in the third hour started a few seconds already into the first song in that hour, "Sweet Freedom", on the website.
- There were Top 3 flashbacks to 1968 and 1980 - though Rick used Billboard rather than R&R for the 1980 flashback (he referred to a 4-week stay at #1 for Olivia Newton-John's "Magic"; it only had 2 weeks there on R&R). And come to think of it...he was talking about Billy Joel's own glass house as the other part of his lead-in to #12 "Modern Woman", but didn't bother to mention that Billy's song in the 1980 flashback was from the album titled Glass Houses. Times like these make me think that they might've been onto something in that show intro... ;)
- Then again, Rick did have some interesting stories in this show, including where Holly Knight, who wrote "Better Be Good to Me" for Tina Turner, had to tell Tina "no" when she asked for another song. Rick's stories, of course, were neither as long nor as detailed as Casey's.
- Rick did have sort of a "Casey moment" when he played a clip of the original Shocking Blue version of "Venus" during his lead-in to Bananarama's at #14. Casey himself did no such thing, though he did refer to it as being at #2 on the Dance chart this week.
- I find it quite kooky to have an American singing "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" during the final hour alongside three Englishmen (one as an Extra) all singing sexually-charged songs in some form!
In addition...this week's Sirius/XM Big 40 countdown is - you guessed it, 1986! If it's dated the 2nd, that'll be THREE countdown versions of the weekend of 8/2/86, all in one weekend! Stay tuned to that thread to find out that one once it's posted. :)

Here are my things and thoughts I learned from listening to this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * Even though this chart from Billboard was the August 1, 1970 chart, this was counted down the weekend of July 25, 1970 since even though AT40 was in its first weeks it was using the Billboard charts a week earlier than the published date. * In the first couple of AT40 shows, did Casey Kasem sometimes do intros and outros to the songs once in a while in a funky kind of voice or something like that? * The song by Chicago - 25 or 6 or 4 - is there a meaning behind this "numbers game" song? * For the song by Mountain - "Mississippi Queen" - Casey mentioned the band had the heaviest guitar player weighing 300 pounds! * To tie in with "Gimme Dat Ding" by the Pipkins: Casey mentioned a pipkin is a small pot with an unusual handle. * Casey gave a comment for Vanity Fare's "Hitchin' a Ride" - "Thumbin' a ride". * How did you like the long version of "Are You Ready" by Pacific Gas and Electric? * This countdown had 3 things that come in two's: Two songs with Mississippi in their name ("Mississippi" by John Phillips, and "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain), two singers who have appeared in the cast of the original run of the Broadway musical "Hair" (Ronnie Dyson and Robin MacMarera), and 2 back to back songs in a row by Crosby Stills Nash and Young ("Ohio" and "Teach Your Children Well"). * Finally: I'm glad one of the AT40 extras - "Alley Oop" by Hollywood Argyles - was kept intact with the 3 others demoted as optional extras, although WLS 94.7 FM doesn't play the AT40: The 70's optional extras.

* The song by Chicago - 25 or 6 or 4 - is there a meaning behind this "numbers game" song? It's a song...about writing a song, referring to 3:35 (or 3:34) in the morning - thus, 25 (or 26) minutes to 4:00.

Things I learned from listening to this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode from August 17, 1974 this weekend on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * The song that kicked off the countdown at #40 - "Beach Baby" - is a throwback to the surf music sound of circa 1961-1964. * 2 acts in the countdown were part of the 1964 British Invasion still around at the time: The Rolling Stones and the Hollies. * Did you know Billy Preston's piano traveled via AIR FREIGHT? * To tie in with Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Weed", Casey mentioned meeting up with Don Bowman in San Francisco back in 1963. (Don Bowman wrote the "Wildwood Weed" song, but is this the same Don Bowman who was the original host of the AT40 spin off for Country radio stations called "The American Country Countdown"?) * The 3 question letters in the episode talked about the act with the most songs in the 10 year 1964-1974 range (James Brown), the biggest instrumental in the rock era ("Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" by Perez Prado), and even a dispute if the Rolling Stones or Frankie Laine had the most Top 40 hits (The result? Frankie Laine with 33 top 40 hits). * This 1974 AT40 broadcast kept the original AT40 Universal City, California snail mail address intact (By 1979-1980 the AT40 snail mail address moved to Hollywood, California). Also kept intact in the 1974 AT40 broadcasts are the voice tracks mentioning the radio stations that were AT40 affiliates at the time (The August 17, 1974 voice track radio station I.D.'s were for KORY in Eugene, Oregon; WILK in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; WTLB in Utica, New York; WWSC in Glens Falls, New York; WTTI in Dalton, Georgia; WBBQ in Dubuque, Iowa; WFOX in Gainesville, Georgia; WABI in Bangor, Maine; and Radio 5RM in South Australia). * And of course, the #1 song on this AT40: The 70's rebroadcast from August 17, 1974 is for anyone listening to AT40: The 70's on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: "The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace.

- For the original show's Extra, Casey told the story of how Billy's 80-pound German shepherd was gnawing on his leg as he was completing the recording of his #1 hit "I Can Help", and how that was the reason why the applause at the end of the song was left in.
- Interestingly, WCRZ played all but the second extra.
- Oddly, it seemed like the #1 song was shortened when played as this week's #1 song - though in this case, since it was the same as last week, it doesn't seem as out-of-place as on 2-5-83, when it wasn't the same song.
- #1 on the Album chart: Mirage by Fleetwood Mac
- #1 on the Soul chart: "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going"
- #1 on the Country chart: "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home" by David Frizzell

Yes, dth. Bowman hosted ACC from its beginnings until 1978, when Bob Kingsley took over. Kingsley hosted the show until 2005, when Kix Brooks (1/2 of the duo Brooks & Dunn) took over.
