Their web signal wasn't very reliable until last month, though.
- A footnote: Most weeks, the station of choice has been Saturday morning's WIDL due to my being at home. On a few occasions, I've deviated from that - including last week, when I slept in and listened later on WCRZ and other stations.
- As most AT40 followers should know by now, Casey pointed out the mistake in playing Diana Ross's "Pieces of Ice" at #38 last week (it had really dropped to #45), when Charlie's "It's Inevitable" should've been played. This week, they'd dropped to #53...and at #38 this week is a song with perhaps a piece of advice for Charlie: "Don't You Get So Mad"! ;)
- First extra "Holiday Road" wasn't a Top 40 hit, but was the theme from 1983's National Lampoon's Vacation.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Love Song" by The Oak Ridge Boys
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Get it Right" by Aretha Franklin
- #1 on the Album chart: Synchronicity by The Police

LOL, it's not that much different than whenever I post it after a 6-10 airing on Saturday mornings, which I've done a number of times already.

Here are my thoughts on this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode of August 18, 1979 after listening to it on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * The 1979 shows start with the second hour, the song that started the second hour of the August 18, 1979 AT40 episode was the highest debut of that week at #33: "Cruel to Be Kind" by Nick Lowe. * The only instrumental in the August 18, 1979 AT40 episode was Spyro Gyra's "Morning Dance". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Cheap Trick while in a concert in Texas got attacked by a fan but went on with their concert? 2) The Cars promoted the gas shortage of Summer 1979? 3) Donna Summer was once locked in a bathroom to listen to a demo of "Last Dance"? 4) There was a KISS Pinball Machine that plays a mini concert when the K-I-S-S letters light up? 5) Ray Parker, Jr. played a guitar while in a broken leg cast at age 13? 6) There was another group named The Knack in the 1960's not connected to the 1979 Knack who were at #2 with "My Sharona"? * Casey told a great report about how the record album design art that attracts record buyers to help sell the albums. * There was a drop piece of the "scat" portion of Louis Armstrong's "Blueberry Hill" to tie in with the Bonnie Pointer song "Heaven Must Have Sent You" (Bonnie does the Louis Armstrong scat style towards the end of the song). * QUESTION LETTER: The female singer with the most top 40 hits in a calendar year was Patti Page with 10 songs in 1951. * Why would Casey call the #3 song by Barbra Striesand "Fight from The Main Event" instead of its real title "The Main Event/Fight"? * FINALLY: Glad 2 of the AT40 Archive songs - "You're No Good" and "Pick Up The Pieces" were kept intact and not demoted to optional extra status, same for the LDD of "Take a Chance on Me" by ABBA.

* Why would Casey call the #3 song by Barbra Striesand "Fight from The Main Event" instead of its real title "The Main Event/Fight"? Probably to have a distinction between movie (The Main Event) and song.

* FINALLY: Glad 2 of the AT40 Archive songs - "You're No Good" and "Pick Up The Pieces" were kept intact and not demoted to optional extra status, same for the LDD of "Take a Chance on Me" by ABBA. Has that ever happened before when the LDD was moved to the optional? Unless it was in hour 1 of a 1979 show. I do remember that. In that case, that's a good thing.

Because "AT40: The '80s" is currently playing on WWIS (at least it's not because of Hurricane Irene as I live outside the affected areas), I'm putting my AT40 previews up now. The '70s show is one I previously covered.
AT40: The '70s features 8/26/1978. This show previously aired back in 2007 and 2009.
Five songs made their debut this week: "Get Off" - Foxy (#35) "Don't Look Back" - Boston (#36) "Think It Over" - Cheryl Ladd (#37) "Right Down The Line" - Gerry Rafferty (#38) "Love Theme From 'Eyes Of Laura Mars'" - Barbra Streisand (#39)
Five song fell off the survey that week: "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight" - Atlanta Rhythm Section (#14) "King Tut" - Steve Martin and the Toot Uncommon (#17) "Stay/The Load-Out" - Jackson Browne (#20) "Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty (#33) "You're A Part Of Me" - Gene Cotton & Kim Carnes (#36)
Biggest Mover: "Hollywood Nights" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (#38 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "Shadow Dancing" - Andy Gibb (#30 to #40)
Original Extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Desiree" - Neil Diamond (first-ever LDD)
Premiere optional extras: "Who Are You" - The Who (#70; highest debut) The Who has the only song being played as an extra this week. It happens in Hour 3. Hours 1 & 2 in place of the usual extra songs will feature interviews with the writer and recipient of the very first LDD.
AT40: The '80s this week features 8/30/1980. This show previously aired in 2007.
Six songs debuted this week: "Another One Bites The Dust" - Queen (#28) "Xanadu" - Olivia Newton-John & Electric Light Orchestra (#31) "How Does It Feel To Be Back" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#34) "Never Knew Love Like This Before" - Stephanie Mills (#37) "He's So Shy" - The Pointer Sisters (#39) "You're Supposed To Keep Your Love For Me" - Jermaine Jackson (#40)
Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Tulsa Time/Cocaine" - Eric Clapton (#30) "Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time" - The Spinners (#33) "Coming Up (Live At Glasgow)" - Paul McCartney (#34) "Stand By Me" - Mickey Gilley (#35) "Tired Of Toein' The Line" - Rocky Burnette (#37) "The Empire Strikes Back (Medley)" - Meco (#38)

For the 3rd. time in AT40: The 70's history, the August 26, 1978 episode featuring the first ever Long Distance Dedication will be played (This was 6 weeks before AT40 expanded from 3 hours to 4 hours), but like a friend from Indiana who I used to e-mail a lot about AT40 past and present on the Pulse Music Board missed out on a 2001 AT40 Flashback of September 1985 featuring the infamous "DEAD DOG LDD" due to the 9/11/2001 tragic events, will some AT40: The 70's stations in the North Carolina/Virginia coast and New England coast not carry this weekend's AT40: The 70's (same for AT40: The 80's this weekend) if the station carries Hurricane Irene coverage instead?
For the record: I will hear the August 26, 1978 AT40: The 70's episode with the first ever LDD on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago this Sunday morning since I live in a hurricane free state! (Although the 2 part optional interviews of the first 2 LDD people won't be played since WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago doesn't carry the AT40: The 70's optional extras).

I'm not really sure if this is going to become a very frequently-recurring thing or not, but it certainly worked for today!
- This show was originally aired back in 2007, but only "Look What You've Done to Me" was an extra in that airing. The other extras from that were Lipps, Inc.'s "Funkytown" (#99 this week!), Paul McCartney's "Coming Up", The Doobie Brothers' "Real Love" in a Double Play with Boz Scaggs (The Doobies debuted on the Hot 100 the following week at #40), and The Kinks' "Lola (Live)" (which charted but didn't hit The 40).
- DEJA VU: BOTH this show and this week's 70s show aired the same weekend back in '07 (weekend of August 25).
- First dedication writer Connie referred to her own letter as a "Not-So-Long Distance Dedication" - thus, the revised title.
- Casey has been known for sometimes great spoils of #1 songs in other shows...but in his build-up to the next-to-last segment (#4 and #3), he spoiled the fact that last week's #1 song ("Magic") had fallen out when he talked about a superstar, referred to said superstar as "her", and promised "her latest #1 smash" coming up!
- BUT HERE'S THE TWIST: Oddly enough, while he freely spoiled the fact that last week's #1 song was not this week's, he did no such thing for the new #1 song!
- #1 on the Country chart: "Cowboys and Clowns/Misery Loves Company" (two-sided) by Ronnie Milsap
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Upside Down"
- #1 on the Album chart: Emotional Rescue by The Rolling Stones

And now for my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's rebroadcast of the August 26, 1978 AT40 episode with the first ever Long Distance Dedication featured that I listened to on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago True Oldies:
* FIRST, FOR THE FIRST LDD. Do you think it was touching or something like that? Neil Diamond's "Desiree" is a good song for the first ever LDD, and even the AT40 Universal City, CA snail mail address to send LDD's was kept intact. And Casey said that there will be a LDD every week on AT40, but when AT40 expanded to 4 hours several weeks later, did Casey sometimes do 2 LDD's a week on average?
NOW FOR THE OTHER NON LDD RELATED THINGS:
* 2 groups from Boston in the Top 40: The Cars and the apply named Boston. * 9 movie songs were in this AT40 episode (even "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh was featured in the movie "F.M."?) * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Cheryl Ladd, who entered AT40's August 1978 chart at #37 with "Think it Over", was prior to her role on Charlie's Angels was acting in TV commercials for Ultra Brite and Wella Balsam? (Casey didn't even mention that prior to Charlie's Angels in the early 1970's Cheryl Ladd (under the name Cherrie Moore) was the singing voice for Melody on the Hanna-Barbera produced cartoon series "Josie and the Pussycats" - On that same cartoon Casey Kasem was the voice of Alexander Cabot, believe it or not!), 2) Toby Beau is also the name of a shrimp boat? 3) Barry Manilow once gave to his fans who ordered tickets to one of his 1978 concerts free bagels? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) The most successful comedy album is Bob Newhart's "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart". 2) The Dave Clark Five became the only act with 2 different songs titled "Everybody Knows" despite the same title but a different song in each to make the Hot 100 - The first one in 1965 reaching #15, and the second one reaching #43 in 1968. * For one set of "AT40 heart on great radio stations" - There was a set of 3 AT40 affiliate mentions all cities in the state of Pennsylvania - Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, and Philadelphia. * Casey even gave a brief report regarding that Americans spend on money for entertainment on recorded music, beating out movies and sporting events! * And regarding the #1 song for August 25, 1978 - "Grease" by Frankie Valli - it was the 7th. #1 song written or co-written by Barry Gibb in a calendar year for 1978.
FINALLY, BACK ON TOPIC REGARDING THE FIRST AT40 LDD: Because WLS 94.7 FM Chicago does not play the optional extras from the AT40: The 70's broadcasts, can someone post on YouTube the audio of the interviews of the writer and receiver of the first ever AT40 LDD that were the optional parts from that AT40 episode?

And regarding this weekend's AT40: The 80's show from September 7, 1985: 1) This was the last AT40 Hall of Fame entry (Ray Charles). 2) Was this September 7, 1985 AT40 episode the week before or two weeks before the AT40 episode with the infamous Dead Dog Long Distance Dedication?

2) It was the week before. That show (9/14) was played last year, as well as in 2007.

- Come to think of it...the second LDD is rather melancholy as well.
- As you might notice, the middle of the chart was pretty rough, with lots of songs jumping over other songs and only one falling song ("What About Love") in a 12-song stretch.
- "Who's Holding Donna Now" reverses its Biggest Move from the last '85 show, going back to #31 - though they don't have the biggest fall this time, with Dead or Alive falling three notches more.
- Casey described "Invincible" as Pat Benatar's latest Top 10 smash...a week too early to make that declaration. OOPS! ;)
- After falling short by missing "Hold On" three weeks ago for 8-14-82, WCRZ played all four extras tonight (!). They've been on a progressively friendlier trek with playing extras since that week.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Saving All My Love For You"
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me" by Roseanne Cash
- #1 on the Album chart: Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits

Here are my thoughts after listening to this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode of the September 4, 1971 AT40 episode on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago:
* Casey said at the start of the show that this week's countdown is a "Wild countdown". Why is it? * Also at the start, Casey mentioned the 8 droppers from AT40 for this week, it would be about a month or so Casey would stop mentioning the droppers dropping out of AT40 of each week's AT40 show but resume that mentioning of the droppers every week starting in December 1983 (Footnote: For a time from November 1988 to June 1989 months after Shadoe Stevens took over Casey Kasem's AT40 place the mentioning of droppers dropping out of AT40 every week was withdrawn until demand to bring it back happened) * Twice on the show after the first and second hours Casey did the rare recap of debuts in the AT40 chart. * Casey made a correction to the previous week's 1971 AT40 chart that Carole King the week before had written 4 songs on the chart when he mentioned there were 3. * SLOWEST CLIMNBING SONG IN THE AT40 SEPTEMBER 4, 1971 CHART: "If Not For You" by Olivia Newton John. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary was once voted as the 3rd. ugliest man(!) on campus while in college at Michigan State University? 2) Rod Stewart was under contract with 2 record labels in 1971 (on the Warner Bros. label as a member of Faces/Small Faces, and on the Mercury label as a solo artist)? 3) Donny Osmond got the idea to cover "Go Away Little Girl" from Steve Lawrence's son David? * QUESTION LETTER: In the 12 year gap from 1959-1971 the record spending the longest at #1 was a 3 way tie between "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, "Theme From a Summer Place" by Percy Faith, and "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darin each spending 9 weeks at #1. * The #1 song on that September 4, 1971 AT40 chart was "Uncle Albert/Admiral Haisley" by Paul and Linda McCartney moving from #12 to #1 becoming the biggest leap to #1 outside of the top 10 since The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" in 1966. * ALSO: 1) Did you notice that AT40 started in that 1971 week began to be heard on a radio station in Western Australia? 2) Did you like the 1971 mail order record album commercial of The American Top 40 Double Dozen kept intact in the show? It was $4.99, but I bet it's a lot more on e-bay today (And I wish it was reissued on CD for a limited time, unless someone made a CD-R copy of this AT40 Double Dozen 1971 record set). * AND...by surprise, at the end of the second hour and before the third hour, WLS 94.7 FM played the second optional extra of this week's AT40: The 70's episode - "Superstar" by the Carpenters. * FINALLY: With this week's AT40 the 70's broadcast from September 4, 1971 I have now heard at least 1 AT40 show from every year of the 1970's since I started to listen to it on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago in June 2011.
Now, I wonder if next week's AT40: The 70's show will be a 1970 show with the song "War" by Edwin Starr in it which could tie in to the September 11, 2001 tragic event 10th. anniversary...

NOTES: - This show originally aired in 2007 - no idea what the extras were from that airing (for comparison), however.
- The last song played on WIDL before the show started was, of all things..."Sledgehammer"! Why yes, it dropped last week (#64 this week).
- Casey claimed that "Glory of Love" was the oldest record in the countdown, with 13 weeks on the [AT40] chart. Apparently he also forgot referencing "Mad About You" as having had 13 weeks in the survey for that song. ;)
- Somebody at Premiere must really be a fan of The Talking Heads; they've had an extra on three of the past four 80s shows now.
- Casey chose a somewhat oddly appropriate story for his intro to "Venus" - the story of how the banana, not the apple, was believed to be the fruit eaten sinfully by Adam and Eve in defiance of God; "Venus" is also the song whose video marked a shift towards a more sexual image for Bananarama.
- Casey made reference to the country version of "Friends and Lovers", which was currently at #9 on that chart (it hit #1 four weeks later, see also the 10-11 show from last year) and included a clip of the song; unusually, the story came after the song was played - most stories with song clips on other shows have served as lead-ins rather than lead-outs.
- Speaking of that 10-11 show, "In Your Eyes" had a weird edit played - which may have been the same as the one played on that show last year. Or, is it in fact the original version of the song from '86, and the one I usually otherwise hear these days is a different edit altogether?
- Casey once again failed to spoil the new #1 song this week. :)
- #1 on the Country chart: "Little Rock" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Soul chart: "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind" by Levert
- #1 on the Album chart: True Blue by Madonna

Well, I know it aired on the day of the 9/11/2001 tragic event anniversary on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago, but here are my thoughts on this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode from September 4, 1976:
* The week before, there was only 1 debut ("Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine) that only spent 1 week at #40, and this week there were 6 debuts. * One of the debuts (it entered the highest that September 4, 1976 week) at #34 was "Disco Duck" by the then Memphis DJ who would later host his own AT40 rival "The Weekly Top 40" and still does to this date. The name? Rick Dees (and his Cast of Idiots). * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Blue Oyster Cult which led off the AT40 chart at #40 with "Don't Fear the Reaper" is a throwback to the electric folk rock sound of the 1960's? 2) In the 1976 year, Diana Ross has been the only artist to hit #1 2 times? 3) The Lady Flash song "Street Singin'" was inspired by the 1950's fad of doo wop and street singing? 4) The group Chicago had their recording studio in a barn? 5) Up to 1976, Cliff Richard had 64 hit singles on the UK/British charts? 6) As a child, Walter Murphy was a student for the radio/TV show organist Rosa Rio? 7) Paul McCartney wrote the Wings song "Let 'Em In" since Paul was in love with the doorbell sound? 8) In 1976, AT40 was heard on 450 outlets of the American Forces Network (a/k/a The Armed Forces Radio Network)? * Casey did a report that originally singers in the 1930's would sue a radio station or DJ for playing records not licenced for broadcast or something like that. * Casey even played a drop piece of "The Three Bells" by the Browns, who were the only country group to hit #1 on the pop charts (One of the Browns members, Jim Ed Brown, later became a popular solo country artist). * BLOOPER ALERTS: Casey called the Jefferson Starship song "Your Love" instead of "With Your Love" and also called the K.C. and the Sunshine Band song "Shake Shake Shake Your Booty" instead of "(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty". * There were 2 plugs for an upcoming October 1976 AT40 special countdown of the top 40 hits of the 1964-1970 Beatles years. * Of course, no question letters in this episode.
