My thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's episode from September 21, 1974 after listening to it this morning on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) The lead singer of the group Fancy resigned from that group when "Wild Thing" was a hit in England? 2) Doc Severensen helped write Mac Davis' song "Stop and Smell the Roses"? 3) The Miracles had their first major change since Smokey Robinson left the group? 4) Eric Clapton was in more music groups in history (Clapton was a member of the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and Derek and the Dominoes)? * QUESTION LETTERS: A lot of them this week regarding...1) The artist with the most top 40 hits in one year (3rd. place is Elvis Presley with 12 in 1956, 2nd. place is Perry Como with 16 in 1949, and 1st. place is the Beatles with 19 in 1964), 2) The oldest and youngest artist to hit #1 (Youngest - 12 year old Jimmy Boyd with "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", and oldest - 64 year old Louis Armstrong with "Hello Dolly"), 3) The highest debuting albums in the rock era (This was 1 year before Elton John became the first artist to debut at #1 on the album chart with 2 different albums in the same 1975 year). And there was also a letter from an AT40 fan who wanted to know when and how it started (Everyone knows it started July 4, 1970 on 7 radio stations - in 1974 it grown to 300 - with Casey Kasem as host, and the first #1 was "Mama Told Me Not to Come" by Three Dog Night) and some AT40 fans who want to know more about the singer who sings on Paul Anka's "You're Having My Baby" - she is Odia Coates, who has at the time did an answer record to Paul's single titled "Having My Baby" and has also produced Paul's album, 'nuff said! * What's the unusual record to me in this AT40 chart? "Earache My Eye Featuring Alice Bowie" by Cheech and Chong, I will post more about it on the NOSTALGIA section of the Pulse Music Board. * KEPT INTACT NOSTALGIC 1974 STATION I.D.'S HEARD IN THIS SEPTEMBER 1974 AT40 EPISODE: WDOV in Dover, Deleware; WACO in Waco, Texas; KJR in Seattle, Washington; WIOU in Kokomo, Indiana; KYXY in Ft. Smith, Arkansas; 5AU in South Australia; WORG in Orangeburg, South Carolina; WIRG in Findlay, Ohio; and 1ZedN in New Zealand. * And there were also 2 plugs for an upcoming 1974 AT40 special dealing with the Top 10 record producers kept intact.

WIRG in Finley, Ohio; and some radio station in New Zealand that I can't remember the name as I post this thread. WIRG is in Findlay, OH and 1ZedN is the New Zealand affiliate you were thinking of. If you have any of Pete Battistini's books (both '70s and '80s versions) he had all the AT40 affiliates mentioned over the years listed. BTW this is also the last week of having the AT40 affiliates identifying themselves. Casey went back to identifying affiliates the following week.

- I didn't end up listening to this show until the WCRZ airing Saturday night, and the station kept having signal jams, which was really annoying.
- There's been complaints that Premiere must have played either a re-recording or some other version of the first extra, the theme from Hill Street Blues. Not having seen any episodes of the show myself or having heard the song outside of 1981 shows, what I'm thinking is most likely is that a later re-mastering of the theme changed it somehow. Go play Heart's Greatest Hits 1985-1995, specifically "Never", then listen for it on the radio sometime. You should notice a difference in the two "Never"s.
- Story behind "Ferry Cross the Mercy" as an Extra: The song was one of the few hits that Gerry & The Pacemakers, a British group, ever had in America. They, and not The Beatles, were the only group to ever hit #1 over in Britain with their first three singles.
- WCRZ only played the first extra...although they were strangely running a little bit early by the end of the first hour, but were running late by the ends of the second and third hours. They were more-or-less on time at the end of the final hour.
- The live version of "At This Moment" - which was the 1986 hit, rather than the original 1981 song - was played.
- #1 on the Country chart: "You Don't Know Me" by Mickey Gilley
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Endless Love"
- #1 on the Album chart: Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones

June 22, 1974 was the first show in which AT40 affiliates identified themselves and that was the case for every episode through September 21. I think the idea was Casey probably wanted to display the unique affiliate jingles although not all affiliates were interested in this idea. Pete's book had an AT40 memo sent out in July requesting affiliates that have not yet sent IDs that they please do so. Among affiliates that likely chose not to have their IDs heard were WDRC (Hartford), WPGC (Washington, D.C.), and WLCY (Tampa).

I really liked having the stations identify themselves. Too bad it didn't stick.

Also interesting that both countdowns have a week where the #1 pop song and soul song are the same.

Here are my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's episode from September 27, 1975 that I heard on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this Sunday morning:
* Three things come in 5's in the countdown: 5 remakes, 5 foreign acts, and 5 family acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Esther Phillips' cover of "What a Difference a Day Makes" was originally by Dinah Washington in 1949? 2) Michael Murphy often visited graveyards of his deceased relatives and friends frequently? 3) The Ritchie Family was a 44 member group? 4) 3 members of America have families in the Air Force? 4) Dickie "Mr. Jaws" Goodman had to handwrite the letter "L" on his 1956 record "The Flying Saucer" making it "LUNIVERSE" to avoid a lawsuit with UNIVERSE records? 5) Janis Ian's song "At Seventeen" reminises about her past? and 6) John Denver (who had the #1 on this AT40 show with "I'm Sorry" - Although the B side called "Calypso" was never played on AT40) shared a one week engagement nightclub bill at Harrah's Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra? * QUESTION LETTERS: One dealing with the artist with the most top 10 records (No, not Elvis or the Beatles, but Bing Crosby with 63 Top 10 records). And one sent in a couple of AT40 fans dealing with the biggest hit so far in 1975 (For the record: "Love Will Keep Us Together" spent 4 weeks at #1, "One of These Nights" spent 10 weeks in the top 10, Philadelphia Freedom" spent 17 weeks in the top 40, and "Black Superman - Muhammad Ali" spent 27 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100). * There were 2 drop pieces Casey played: One of the original "Brazil" done in 1943 by Xavier Cugat, and one of "Too Much" by Elvis Presley to tie in with a brief story that Elvis had the all time longest run in the top 10 with 52 weeks. * Also: 2 song snippets heard in Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws" - "Get Down Tonight" and "Rhinestone Cowboy" - also had their own spots in the countdown. * Though Halloween is 1 month away: The scariest song on the AT40 chart for September 27, 1975 according to Casey had to be the "Theme From Jaws" by John Williams. * The censored version of "Fight the Power" by the Isley Brothers was played. * And Casey plugged the next week special AT40 show of the Top 40 Rock 'n Roll Acts of the 1950's a few times in the show. And was this the first month in 1975 the rare "Now, on with the countdown" jingle was heard? I know this AT40 September 27, 1975 was 1 week prior to the 1950's Rock 'n Roll Acts special and 1 week prior to the first hearing at the end (then later heard to the start of the show after a few weeks) the 1975-1984 AT40 "Shuckatoom" theme and 2 weeks prior to the Wink Martindale AT40 guest host episode.

I think the writer probably requested that her name not be given. After all the subject was about abuse and Casey has read other LDDs dealing with the similar subject (see any LDD for "Luka") and in those cases did not mention the writer's identity. You mean like the second one here? ;) September 26, 1987 40 -- Go West - Don't Look Down - The Sequel (39) 39 -- Kenny G - Don't Make Me Wait For Love (15) 38 24 The Whispers - Rock Steady (7) 37 -- The Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin (9) 36 37 Mr. Mister - Something Real (Inside Me/Inside You) (29) 35 23 Richard Marx - Don't Mean Nothing (3) 34 20 Madonna - Who's That Girl? Flashback Extra: Squeeze "Hourglass"20 16 Jellybean Featuring Elisa Fiorillo - Who Found Who (16) 19 21 Natalie Cole - Jump Start (13) 18 14 LL Cool J - I Need Love (14) 17 22 Levert - Casanova (5) 16 17 Smokey Robinson - One Heartbeat (10) 15 07 Dan Hill & Vonda Shepard - Can't We Try (6) 14 19 John Cougar Mellencamp - Paper in Fire (9) 13 18 Heart - Who Will You Run To? The writer is her brother, and he asked that his name not be given06 05 ABC - When Smokey Sings (5) 05 09 Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - Lost in Emotion (1) 04 08 Bananarama - I Heard a Rumour (4)03 01 Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett - I Just Can't Stop Loving You (1) Flashback Extra: Richard Marx "Should've Known Better", which made the Hot Shot Debut that week at #6402 04 Whitesnake - Here I Go Again (1) 01 02 Whitney Houston - Didn't We Almost Have it All (1)NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: KEDG. They've had a rough time with their streaming signal over the past couple of months, including going down completely at one point, but they seemed to be back up-and-running with at least a decent stream this week.
- Casey only mentioned the song titles when he listed the droppers, as he did back on 2-27-88.
- Something about this show makes it seem like it was rushed a bit...there's missing bumpers in a couple spots, and some of Casey's intros were spotty as well.
- This week's show features a rare example of a question letter that served as a direct lead-in to a countdown song - i.e. the question answer was either a countdown artist or song. In this case, it was Huey Lewis & The News as the top group of the 1980s (so far); the letter also inquired about the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.
- Casey gave an additional reference to "Luka" being a dropper this week in his outro, which he did not do for "Missing You" back on 5-11-85 when that song was also a LDD.
- Interestingly, "When Smokey Sings" received the softer jingle, while "Victim of Love" did not. ("I Need Love" did too, but that's no surprise.) Plus, "Touch of Grey" received the standard jingle, while it received the softer one the previous week (9-19, last year).
- This week's show marks the third in the last five where it's been spoiled that last week's #1 has fallen out ahead of time, while the identity of the new #1 song hasn't been spoiled at all. (It was spoiled on 9-7-85, while last week's 9-19-81, of course, didn't change #1s.)
- Speaking of that ex-#1, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" had its spoken intro included (though "Bad" had a verse cut).
- Remarkably, none of the extras were shortened (I don't think, anyway) other than Larry Morgan cutting in a bit early on the ends.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Three Time Loser" by Dan Seals
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Catch Me (I'm Falling)" by Pretty Poison
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Need Love"
- #1 on the Album chart: Bad by Michael Jackson

[/li][li]Casey only mentioned the song titles when he listed the droppers, as he did back on 2-27-88.[/quote] You left out Casey mentioned "I Want Your Sex" as one of the droppers. See Page 29 Reply 861 for any AT40 '80s shows I listed when Casey mentioned only song titles and not acts falling off. Worth noting if Premiere doesn't do another 1987 show again until November it will be more of the same for any November show except for 11/21 (which aired in 2007) when Casey didn't even mention droppers (there were two that week: Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Lost In Emotion" and Wa Wa Nee's "Sugar Free").

I know that on Oct 11, "Bad Blood" jumps into the top spot. What kind of big jump does it make on Oct 4th?

I know that on Oct 11, "Bad Blood" jumps into the top spot. What kind of big jump does it make on Oct 4th? On October 4, 1975 AT40 never did a regular countdown and did a special countdown of the Top 40 acts of the 1950's instead. So we won't know.

The answer is in Billboard Hot 100 Charts: The Seventies (Hardcover) by Joel Whitburn. They sell them on Amazon for $80.

It moved 25-6 on 10/4/75, one of many big moves that week. "Lyin' Eyes" jumped 40-18: "Rocky" went from 24 to 10 (and only one notch higher); and "Fight the Power" fell from 4 to 24, and then right off the top 40.

Here are my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's reairing of the October 1, 1977 episode I heard this morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago:
* This show had only 2 debuts, one in a low position at #40 ("Dusic" by Brick), and one high at #26 ("It's Escatacy When You Lay Down Next to Me" by Barry White). * There are 2 songs in the AT40 chart that are remakes of Beach Boys songs: "Surfin' U.S.A." by Leif Garrett, and "Don't Worry Baby" by B.J. Thomas. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Brick's song "Dusic" is a hybrid of DISCO + MUSIC? 2) Alan Parsons helped out with the Beatles "Abbey Road" sessions? 3) When Stevie Wonder was 9 years old he was originally a pest at Motown studios? 4) Leif Garrett has been acting in movies, including 3 "Walking Tall" movies since the age of 5? Even Casey mentioned Leif's then 1977 project was a TV movie called "Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion". 5) "Daytime Friends" by Kenny Rogers is considered a "soap opera" style song? 6)James Taylor and then wife Carly Simon had a vacation home in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts? 7) "The King is Gone" by Ronnie McDowell is the only Elvis tribute song to make the Top 40 on the Pop chart? 8) Shaun Cassidy sneaked into subway trains without paying? * AND IN THE RECORDS DEPARTMENT: On the October 1, 1977 time Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album succeeded Elvis Presley's 1961 album "Blue Hawaii" (20 weeks at #1 on the album chart) to spend a 21st. week at #1 on the albume chart. And on the October 1, 1977 time (and to tie in with the #1 AT40 song "Star Wars Theme" by Meco) "Star Wars" succeeded "Jaws" as the then biggest movie of all time (This was years before "Titantic" and "Avatar" set record breakers at the movie box office). * QUESTION LETTER: The record for a song spending an entire year in the top 40 on any music singles chart goes to Bobby "Jingle Bell Rock" Helms who in 1957 spent 52 weeks on the top 40 Country chart with "Fraulein". * Casey even told a report about the oldest active musician in music history who died in September 1977 at the age of 95 named Leo Tschosky (not sure if I spelled his name right). * I know one extra - "A Fifth of Beethoven" (with a story tied in of a classic music radio stations top 40 all time classical songs with mention of the top 5, including 3 symphonies by Beethoven - Beethoven's 5th., Beethoven's 6th., and Beethoven's 9th. - in the top 5) was kept intact, but the other AT40 extra - "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" - got demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA even though WLS 94.7 FM Chicago didn't play it nor any other Optional Extra (WLS 94.7 FM Chicago did play by accident or something like that an AT40 The 70's Optional Extra some weeks ago!). * And a tidbit for anyone who has read the "American Top 40: The Countdown of the Century" book since it mentioned that Barry White's "It's Escatcy When You Lay Down Next To Me" was shortened to a little over 1 minute because of shorting songs to fit the then 3 hour format: I timed it's timing for its airing on this October 1, 1977 AT40 show and its playing of the song (excluding Casey's intros and outros in the music) was 1 minute and 12 seconds! (Heck, who remembers during the Shadoe Stevens 1990's AT40 years when only the first verse of "The Humpty Dance" by Digital Underground, "Enter Sandman" by Metalica, "O.P.P." by Naughty By Nature, "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" by Geto Boys, "Tennessee" by Arrested Development, "People Everyday" by Arrested Development, "Loser" by Beck, and maybe (from the July 1994-January 1995 period when the old AT40 ceased airing in the USA but continued for several more months in foreign countries) "Fantastic Voyage" by Coolio when they made the AT40 countdowns? Playing the first verse of these is at least 1 minute and several seconds, more or less!) * And Casey even made a plug for a 2 part "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" episode that he will guest star in (where he plays a spoof of a TV detective or something like that) was kept intact in this AT40 episode (Of course, the star of the "Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries", Shaun Cassidy, was on the AT40 chart with "That's Rock 'n Roll").

^ I wasn't planning to for this week. There were not one but two recaps posted back in '08; I didn't see a point in adding my own.

The countdown from 77 seemed like one of the few when Casey totally gave away what song would be at number one at the top of the show by saying it was a hot instrumental and there's only one in the countdown. Also a question. What position does Debby Boone move into the next week before jumping into #1 the following week?

The countdown from 77 seemed like one of the few when Casey totally gave away what song would be at number one at the top of the show by saying it was a hot instrumental and there's only one in the countdown. Also a question. What position does Debby Boone move into the next week before jumping into #1 the following week? #3, up from #15. The same week, Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop fell from #3 to #15.

The answer is in Billboard Hot 100 Charts: The Seventies (Hardcover) by Joel Whitburn. They sell them on Amazon for $80. I got a copy of both the 70s edition and the 80s edition.
