HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE OCTOBER 31, 1970 AT40 CHART AFTER LISTENING TO IT THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* REMEMBER: The October 31, 1970 AT40 chart was originally aired the weekend of October 24, 1970 since at the time AT40 was one week before the Billboard chart the countdown used on that date was published. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 4 songs about girls, 4 songs that hold their positions, 8 foreign acts, and 8 Motown records on this October 31, 1970 AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Stevie Wonder got married in 1970? 2) Creedence Clearwater Revival is the most played artist in jukeboxes according to a 1970 survey? (Think about that next time you play a CCR song on any jukebox - CD, TouchTunes, or an old fashioned 45 jukebox - if it has CCR songs on it), 3) Joe Cocker plays an imaginary guitar even in his concerts? 4) The song by 100 Proof Aged in Soul called "Somebody's Been Sleeping" has nothing to do with the story of the Three Bears? 5) Glen Campbell is a golf nut? 6) James Taylor can thank the Beatles for helping him launch a music career? 7) Also, James Taylor was a DEAN OF MEDICINE at the University of North Carolina? * Is it true the 1970 live version of Dionne Warwick's "Make it Easy on Yourself" is played on this AT40 episode? On YouTube you can hear the original 1962 Dionne Warwick version of this song! * BLOOPER ALERTS: 1) Casey said for the #40 song by Stevie Wonder "Heaven Help Us" instead of "Heaven Help Us All". 2) Casey said the group Dawn (who was on the AT40 chart with "Candida") is a 4 person male group, but in real life as Casey would later find out at least a year later or before 1970 was over Dawn is actually a 2 woman and 1 man group consiting of Joyce Vincent Wilson, Thelma Hopkins, and lead singer Tony Orlando! * Glad 2 AT40 extras - "Kicks" (one of the first anti drug songs) and "Hang On Sloopy" were kept intact in this AT40 episode, but the other 2 AT40 extras were demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status and WLS 94.7 FM never plays the OPTIONAL EXTRAS on the AT40: THE 70's broadcasts! * Finally: Though it may be Halloween related: Did you like Casey's somewhat EVIL VOICE intro to Blood, Sweat, and Tears' "Lucrita MacEvil"? (It would have also been Halloween related if "Monster Mash" was an AT40: The 70's OPTIONAL EXTRA as I said before!) ANYWAY: HAPPY HALLOWEEN, AT40 AND CASEY KASEM FANS!

In the recap prior to introducing #1, he referred to the Stevie Wonder song as "Heavan Help Us All"

A question for anyone in the NYC area: Is there at least one New York City area radio station that currently carries AT40: The 70's and/or AT40: The 80's on weekends?

I have a correction to make: I said that Premiere aired the Billboard chart from 10/31/1970 in 2007. That was false. Premiere aired the Billboard chart from 11/7/1970 in 2007. The show with the 10/31 chart never aired before. Apologies.

- Another one from the "What a Difference a Year Makes..." (or three): Casey noted that there were no movie songs in this week's countdown. That's a full departure from a little over three years ago back in 1980, with eight movie songs in the countdown (see the 10/4 show for the best details).
- As with 9-26-87 some weeks ago, this week also had a question letter as a song lead-in. In this case, the question asked about the biggest-selling albums of all time. Currently tied for third was Thriller, which led into "P.Y.T." at #20.
- Casey also related how multiple ships had sank on the same dates (November 10-11) back in 1930 and in 1913. BTW, he had stated that the Fitzgerald sank either on the night of the 10th or morning of the 11th...but it was in fact the night of the 10th. And incidentally, Gordon Lightfoot is Canadian, and the Fitzgerald sank on the Canadian side of Lake Superior.
- This week's extras from Premiere seemed to find Larry Morgan in a reflective mood with his intros.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "All Night Long (All Night)"
- #1 on the Album chart: Synchronicity by The Police
- #1 on the Country chart: "Islands in the Stream"

[/li][li]This week's extras from Premiere seemed to find Larry Morgan in a reflective mood with his intros.[/quote] Case in point: "Joanna": Kool & The Gang were looking for a name song like "Rosanna" or "Gloria". However, there was some karma involved. "Rosanna" and "Gloria" peaked at #2 where "Joanna" peaked. "I Guess That's Why They Call Them The Blues": Written by Bernie Taupin as a love letter to his wife. "Union Of The Snake": Duran Duran says the inspiration for this song came from David Bowie's "Let's Dance".

BTW WWIS aired a commentary on the now-disgraced Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno as I type. In my own honest opinion from someone whose parents were born in Pennsylvania (I was born in Florida) and liked Penn State, it's a shame that a great Hall of Fame coaching career had to end like this. With two of college football's all-time winningest coaches - Paterno and Bobby Bowden - leaving their respective schools on bad terms, my advice to the current college football coaches out there: 1.) Your job is not safe and 2.) Don't stay too long.

I haven't been able to get the WWIS stream to stay playing today, so I gave up on it. Oh well, there's always tomorrow...

Your job is not safe and 2.) Don't stay too long. First 1972 AT40: The 70's show in 5 months! I guess hearing "Convention 72" will get us inspired for the next year Presidential election. And thanks for the mini brief about former Penn State coach Joe Paterno: My mother went to Penn State College, of course.

First 1972 AT40: The 70's show in 5 months! I guess hearing "Convention 72" will get us inspired for the next year Presidential election. To illustrate how long it's been since we've heard 1972, the following top 5 hits were not in a single regular Premiere AT40 this year: "Black and White" (Three Dog Night, hit #1); "I'm Still In Love With You" (Al Green); "Saturday In the Park" (Chicago); "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" (Mac Davis, hit #1); "Back Stabbers" (O'Jays); "Go All the Way" (Raspberries); and "Everybody Plays the Fool" (Main Ingredient). 1972 was neglected even worse by Premiere in 2009, when it was ignored from early May to mid-December, and that was when there were fewer years in rotation (before they started playing 1978-79 shows that were originally four hours.)

In a way I'm glad I wasn't able to hear it, regardless of what their stance was. I'm so angry over how he's being treated. I haven't been able to get the WWIS stream to stay playing today, so I gave up on it. Oh well, there's always tomorrow... Good thing. WWIS just cut off it's signal just as "Separate Lives" was about to be played. Daylight savings time result perhaps?

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's BROADCAST OF THE NOVEMBER 11, 1972 AT40 CHART EPISODE HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* There was mention of July-December 1972 Chicago AT40 station WCFL Chicago in this episode! * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The B side of Donny Osmond's "Why" is "Lonely Boy"? 2) "Don't Do It" by the Band is a remake of a Marvin Gaye song? 3) Jim Croce originally had jobs driving Catepillar trucks and stringing telephone lines? 4) "American City Suite" by Cashman and West is a 3 song in 1 medley? 5) "I Believe in Music" by Gallery was originally done by Mac Davis? 6) The Temptations is one of the many groups with 3 or more hits with different lead singers? 7) In the UK/Great Britian, the Spinners were called the Motown Spinners (then called the Detroit Spinners, though not mentioned by Casey) to avoid confusion with another UK group called the Spinners? 8) Lobo wrote the early 1970's Total cereal TV commercial jingle "Today is the First Day of The Rest of Your Life" (it was sung by Cashman and West)? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the many singers who hit the chart after their deaths. Among them prior to 1972: Nat King Cole (Casey called it Nat Cole without the middle name of "King"), Janis Joplin, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding; 2) Regarding if any of the Beatles hit #1 solo after the Beatles break up, since it was 1972, the 2 up to that date who had #1's were George Harrison and Paul McCartney (Ringo Starr wouldn't hit #1 until 1973 and John Lennon wouldn't hit #1 until 1974); 3) And regarding the record hitting/entering the highest position the first week: Elvis Presley with "Love Me Tender" which entered at #2 before moving into the #1 slot. * BLOOPER ALERT: Was it Shannon Lynn's fault there was a scratch skip in Jim Croce's song "Operator" or was it the radio stations fault? * Did you even notice a version of Mel and Tim's "Starting All Over Again" played that starts with spoken dialogue with Mel and Tim receiving and looking and reading part of a telegram before the song is sung? * There was even a kept intact plug for an upcoming AT40 Top 80 songs of 1972 special coming for the holiday season (I wonder what AT40: The 70's year end countdown Premiere will plan for this Christmas/New Years weekend, same for the AT40: The 80's year end countdown). * FINALLY: I am glad to hear on this AT40: The 70's November 11, 1972 chart episode the novelty Dickie Goodman break-in record style comedy record "Convention '72" by the Delegates, if you have read the book "The Billboard Book of One Hit Wonders" you'll notice in the entry about the "Convention '72" record that in Chicago it made the WLS Musicradio 890 AM survey without getting airplay on the station (maybe fueled by Chicago area record store sales?), but maybe for the first time ever for a WLS related radio station in the Chicago area (WLS True Oldies 94.7 FM Chicago to be exact which airs Sunday mornings AT40: The 70's) that "Convention '72" novelty record was played intact - all 5 minutes of it! (The record was #9 on this AT40 November 11, 1972 chart).

Localized editions this week...brought to you by stations WCRZ and WHNN, respectively. :) (NOTE: Both stations only played the first Premiere extra on their respective show.) I want to call this a rare week of chart form consistency...except that for some reason, he forgot to read off the droppers this week! (I toldja this might happen... )
- From the "Here We Go Again...!" files: Two weeks ago was 10-25-86, making it the third straight month that an '86 show has aired. Now, here comes this show, following 9-7 and 10-12. Speaking of 10-12, that show had no softer jingle, and neither does this one - not even for "Say You, Say Me".
- Casey answered a question letter asking who'd had the most consecutive #1 songs. Hmmm...should we accept the answer given, or teleport forward, er...back, er...however...over to 4-30-88 for the answer? ;)
- This week, it's the album version of "Never" that was played.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Part-Time Lover"
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Part-Time Lover"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Hang On to Your Heart" by Exile
- #1 on the Album chart: The Miami Vice soundtrack

On that particular weekend, which was November 10, the 80s show - which was the weekend directly following Election Day, BTW - was an ex-AT40 Flashback show from 1985 (11/9), and the following weekend's 70s show was from 1977. Fast forward to this year: The show airs on the weekend of November 12, which is the one directly following Election Day, airs opposite an ex-AT40 Flashback show from 1985 (albeit not the same one), and follows a show from 1977 (again, not the same one). Oy!
- This show felt somewhat faster-, yet still steady-, paced.
Casey didn't read the week's droppers this week, either - though I'm told that in this case, it's because after the first year or so, and wouldn't become a regular thing again until 1984. I don't think he gave this week's chart date, though, either. That would make its way in a lot sooner...though I'm not sure exactly how sooner.
- Even with a huge 27-point drop, Casey didn't announce "Use Me" as Biggest Dropper (unlike "Lonely Ol' Night" in '85!), though I suppose it was pretty common to pass that up whenever the biggest-dropping record was also the first in the survey. (See also "Open Your Heart", down thirteen on 3-14-87.)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I'll Be Around" (5th consecutive week)
- #1 on the Country & Western chart: "My Man" by Tammy Wynette
- #1 on the Album chart: Superfly soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield

By the way...here are the list of songs that are featured in "Convention '72", in order of their appearance: - The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Troglodyte (Cave Man) (a few different lines are used in different places; the repeating "Gotta Find a Woman" is used three times)
- Joe Tex - I Gotcha
- Bill Withers - Lean on Me
- Bobby Vinton - Sealed With a Kiss [Vinton's is a cover released in '72; original Brian Hyland recording is 1962]
- Soundbite from The Godfather: "He made me an offer...I couldn't refuse"
- Donna Fargo - The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
- The Chakachas - Jungle Fever
- Gilbert O' Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)
- Harry Nilsson - Coconut (two lines)
- America - A Horse With No Name
- Jerry Reed - Take it Easy (B-side to '72 release of "Alabama Wild Man")
- Luther Ingram - (If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right
- The O' Jays - Back Stabbers
- Three Dog Night - Liar
- The Bee Gees - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
- Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff
- Cher - Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves
- The 5th Dimension - (Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All
- Dave and Ansel Collins - Double Barrel
- Sammy Davis, Jr. - The Candy Man
- Yvonne Elliman - I Don't Know How to Love Him
About half of these I did recognize already, but the other half I did have to look up.

Also: I wonder, are some radio stations that carry AT40: The 70's and/or AT40: The 80's (mostly the Premiere affiliates) holding off on these shows due to the ALL CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY MUSIC mode?

WODS Boston has already started Christmas music so AT 40 '70s is off their station for the remainder of the year.

Localized editions this week...brought to you by stations WCRZ and WHNN, respectively. :) (NOTE: Both stations only played the first Premiere extra on their respective show.) For 11/16/1985, "Burning Heart" was a week away from entering the countdown and "Talk To Me" entered the Hot 100 at #66. For 11/11/1972, "Sweet Surrender" entered the Hot 100 at #55. Side notes: "That's What Friends Are For": Became AT40's #1 song of 1986. "Burning Heart": In the intro, it was revealed the original title was to be "The Unmistakeable Fire". "Talk To Me": Peaked at #1 on the Rock chart. "Living In The Past": Originally recorded in 1969 and song was about longing for more simpler times. "Sweet Surrender": Peaked at #1 on the AC chart.

I thought it was interesting that The Stylistics had the then-record for most top 40 hits from one album (at 4)

Seven debuts and we don't get to hear a single one of them, not even as an optional extra. (Still, this is better than no 1970s four hour shows at all.)

But I hope in December 2011 around the December 17-18, 2011 weekend the last regular 1979 AT40 show (December 22, 1979) is aired on AT40: The 70's (which would be 3 hours starting with hour #2 as always).

Well, now that they're airing the 1979 shows, and the last show we heard from that year was back in October, we just might hear that show. Or better yet, perhaps a truncated version of the Top 50 of 1979 (most likely cut back to 40, with several heavily edited songs, like they did for the 1976 and 1977 year-enders in late 2009).
