In his intro for "Mony Mony", Casey pointed out the weeks where they both entered the Top 40 and the Top 10 at the same time. And, of course, one's replaced the other on top this week. Well, as stated, this one's a repeat from 2007. As we found eight weeks ago, the first of this series, 9-26, was also a repeat from 2007! The other one, 10-24? Well...with Charlie Van Dyke as the host, don't count on that one airing anytime soon.
- Was this the last week where Casey ever replayed any of last week's Top 3? mkarns has the answer: It was. The original cue sheet doesn't include Last Week's #1 on it at the beginning.
- Casey didn't read the droppers this week, either. (See? Now that's two in a row!) I'm a little less surprised that he didn't read them this week though, seeing as there were only two debuts, and they were mixed in among the other songs in the first hour at that.
- This show sort of had the pacing of several 1986 shows, with last week's #1 song being played first, the second hour starting with #31, and the third hour starting with #21.
- Casey called "U Got the Look" Prince's third Top 40 hit from Sign O' The Times, whose second single, "If I Was Your Girlfriend", went to #60. (OOPS! ;))
- No softer jingle this week.
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Won't Need You Anymore" by Randy Travis
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Angel" by Angela Winbush
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack from Dirty Dancing

Flashback Extra: Laura Branigan "Power of Love"
I thought it was announced as being a week away from hitting the countdown at the end.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's REBROADCAST OF THE NOVEMBER 18, 1978 AT40 EPISODE HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING.
* This show was originally a 4 hour show (AT40 went from a 3 hour format to a 4 hour format in October 1978, this is the 7th. week AT40 was in the 4 hour format) but the show started with the second hour starting with song #30 ("How You Gonna See Me Now" by Alice Cooper). * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Eric Carmen had to get his solo recording contract by contacting presidents of record companies by attending his house in Cleveland, Ohio (Eric got the solo recording contract from Arista thanks to Clive Davis, Eric later had contracts with Geffen and RCA), 2) Paul Davis' previous hit before "Sweet Life" called "I Go Crazy" took a short climb to reach the Top 10? 3) The group Chicago handled the death of their lead guitarist to get their spirit back? 4) The group Dr. Hook went bankrupt in 1974? 5) Gino Vanelli's contract with A&M records was a last minute reprive? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the only 1 song that has hit #1 by 3 different artists - "To Each His Own" in 1946, done by Eddie Howard, Freddy Martin, and The Ink Spots, respectively. * ODDITY FROM THE PREVIOUS 1978 WEEK: The #1's on the major Billboard charts - Hot 100, Album, Soul, Country, and Disco - were all occupied by women (Donna Summer occupied 3 of them!)! * It was nice to hear the rare Long Distance Dedication intro jingle in this 1978 AT40 episode (was that LDD intro jingle retired by Feb. or March 1979? There would be a intro music for Casey Kasem's Casey's Top 40 Request and Dedications segments (that was the 1989-1998 name for the LDD's since the old AT40 from 1988 until its 1995 demise thanks to second host Shadoe Stevens kept the LDD name) and was later recycled from 2001-2009 for the later Casey Kasem revival AT40/AT20/AT10 shows when it had the LDD's). * Regarding the kept intact extra of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding: It was one of 2 artists to hit #1 one time after the artist's death, the other was Janis Joplin with "Me and Bobby McGee". * Also: One of the AT40 Archive songs of the 1970's - "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles was kept intact in this AT40 broadcast, one of the others, "My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison, was demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status, however... * ...before the #2 and #1 song was played, WLS 94.7 FM Chicago did play the 3rd. AT40: The 70's Optional Extra: The other AT40 Archives song originally heard in the not played first hour: "I Think I Love You" by the Partridge Family, complete with the AT40 Archives musical intro and a little snippet of the end of first 3 hours 1978-1984 outro instrumental theme! Who's knows when WLS 94.7 FM Chicago will play a stray AT40: The 70's Optional Extra again?

For 11/16/1985, "Burning Heart" was a week away from entering the countdown and "Talk To Me" entered the Hot 100 at #66. For 11/11/1972, "Sweet Surrender" entered the Hot 100 at #55. Side notes: "That's What Friends Are For": Became AT40's #1 song of 1986. "Burning Heart": In the intro, it was revealed the original title was to be "The Unmistakeable Fire". "Talk To Me": Peaked at #1 on the Rock chart. "Living In The Past": Originally recorded in 1969 and song was about longing for more simpler times. "Sweet Surrender": Peaked at #1 on the AC chart. I love it when you give us a breakdown of the optional segments, since not every station plays them. Thanks for doing that! :)

That's been true for some of the 70s shows, but I think I remember seeing for 6/28/80 that the two were cut entirely. And Flashback is a bad example since the next things to go would be 1980 and 1981 themselves, entirely.

A few stations that are in holiday mode are playing old versions of American Top Ten, like KCLH (LaCrosse, WI). This week, they're doing the show originally broadcast the weekend of November 28, 2005. Here is the link: pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ac&action=display&thread=1267Not sure if they'll change any of the songs, like it was on the stations I listened to last year.

- Casey seemed to be having fun telling the story of "Centerfold" in that song's intro.
- Casey was also already gearing up listeners for the year-end special of 1981's top hits.
- This is probably the first time I've heard a show where Casey read the #1s on Billboard's other charts, then as he moved to the week's #1 on the pop chart, the drumroll came immediately.
- #1 on the Album chart: 4 by Foreigner
- #1 on the Country chart: "My Favorite Memory" by Merle Haggard
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Groove"

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF NOVEMBER 27, 1971 AS HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* Casey started the show after his intro with a brief plug for the upcoming 1971 AT40 Christmas Countdown show which was kept intact. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 7 solo artists in the top 10, and there are two songs with the title "Superstar" in the countdown (one by the Carpenters, the other by the Temptations). * Does Casey Kasem like the title of the #40 song "I Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After? I remember Shadoe Stevens liked a #1 song on the old AT40 in 1992 called "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" by En Vogue! * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "I Found Someone On My Own" by the Free Movement was on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 6 months? 2) Chicago's "Questions 67 and 68" came from their debut album relelased 2 and a 1/2 years from November 1971? 3) Three Dog Night earned $1,000 a week from concert dates rather than record sales? 4) Sly and the Family Stone only fly on one airline that allows their 20 dogs? 5) Issac Hayes, who had the #1 AT40 song for that November 27, 1971 week with "Theme From Shaft", had patched holes in the soles of his shoes made from cardboard at age 9? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the song that debuted the highest in the Top 40 - "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley (which tied into the intact AT40 extra of the same name), 2) Regarding the song staying the longest on Billboard Chart - "Wonderful, Wonderful" by Johnny Mathis. and 3) What was the TOUGHEST AT40 QUESTION LETTER EVER TO THIS DATE: Regarding the artist charting the most weeks - Pat "Every Body Needs Milk" Boone with 218 weeks. * OTHER THINGS: Glad the Elvis "Love Me Tender" extra was kept intact on this AT40 episode while the other EXTRA "You Keep Me Hanging On" was demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status. And the CENSORED VERSION of Issac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" was played. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOW AS WE HEAD INTO THE LAST MONTH OF 2011, LIKE THE AT40 FUN AND GAMES FORUMS DO, HERE ARE MY PREDICTIONS FOR AT40 1970's SHOWS TO AIR ON UPCOMING WEEKS IN DECEMBER 2011 ON AT40: THE 70's: * December 3-4, 2011: The December 6, 1975 AT40 episode (One of the first with the SHUCKATOOM theme at the start of the show) * December 10-11, 2011: The December 14, 1974 AT40 episode (All 4 Beatles have songs solo on the chart) * December 17-18, 2011: The December 22, 1979 AT40 episode (The last regular AT40 episode in the AT40: The 70's era excluding AT40 specials and AT40 Year End Countdowns - Would start with hour #2) * December 24-25, 2011: One of the AT40 Christmas Countdown specials from either 1971 or 1973. * December 31, 2011/January 1, 2012: The AT40 Year End Countdown from 1971 or 1973. HONORABLE MENTION REGARDING A PREDICTION/SUGGESTION FOR AN AT40: THE 80's YEAR END COUNTDOWN FOR DECEMBER 24, 2011-DECEMBER 25, 2011 AND/OR DECEMBER 31, 2011-JANUARY 1, 2011: The AT40 year end top 100 of 1983 (Originally 8 hours long in 1 special, why not split this special into 2 4 hour parts spread over two consecutive weeks like for the other AT40 year end specials from 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987? The first 4 hours one week, the second 4 hours starting with hour #5 the next week).

REGARDING THE AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE DECEMBER 4, 1976 AT40 EPISODE I LISTENED TO THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* The song that started the countdown off: "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder, was the first entry in the Top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart since "Imagine" by John Lennon in 1971. * BY THE NUMBERS: 12 songs in the countdown are disco songs, there are 28 songs written or co-written by the artists who sang them, and there are 15 foreign acts. HONORABLE MENTION: There are 26 #1's in the 1976 year up to the December 4, 1976 AT40 date. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The group Bread broke up for a few years fromn 1973 to 1976 before reuniting? 2) The group Queen is famous for their mini rock operas? 3) Blue Oyster Cult sound like the 1960's Byrds group (Casey mentioned it twice in the intro and outro of B.O.C.'s "Don't Fear the Reaper")? 4) The group ABBA is the most popular group in Australia as 1 out of 15 Australians owned an ABBA album? 5) Englebert "After the Lovin'" Humperdink's original Anglo-saxon name was Arnold Dorsey? 6)" The Best Disco in Town" by the Ritchie Family features snippets from former disco records? 7) "Nadia's Theme" was originally "Cotton's Dream" from the movie "Bless the Beasts and the Children". 8) The Edmund Fitzgerald ship as sung by Gordon Lightfoot in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was named after the same Edmund Fitzgerald of Northwestern Mutual Life?, and 9) Next to the Beatles, the Bee Gees had more cover versions of their songs by other artists (according to BMI and ASCAP)? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the female singer who occupied the #1 spot on the album chart the most weeks in the rock era - "Tapestry" by Carole King; and 2) Regarding a top 40 hit that's not a vocal nor instrumental nor spoken word to make the Top 40 in the rock era: There were 2: "Oh Susanna" by the Singing Dogs featuring the barking of 5 dogs trained by Don Charles, and "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" by Whistling Jack Smith who whistles (We could add to this list a year later in 1977 the all clucking Henhouse Five Plus Two with "In The Mood"). * FROM THE AT40 BOOK OF RECORDS: The most charted albums by a group was by the Ventures with 36 albums. * BLOOPERS OR NOT?: 1) Casey called the artist of "You Are My Starship" THE NORMAN CONNORS BAND instead of just NORMAN CONNORS. 2) Remember a 1972 AT40 when Casey reversed the title and artist around calling "Hot Butter by Popcorn" instead of "Popcorn by Hot Butter"? Casey did it again in 1976 doing "Beth with Kiss" instead of "Kiss with Beth". * And Casey plugged in this episode the upcoming 1976 AT40 Top 100 year end countdown (But no word yet on what AT40: The 70's plans for their year end countdown rebroadcast, my bet/prediction is still the 1972 year end, this week I was wrong on the predition of 1975 but a 1976 AT40 aired instead, I hope my preditions for next week's AT40 The 70's show of December 14, 1974 and the AT40: The 70's show two weekends from now of December 22, 1979 is true!)

While he also noted that Scandal was moving up to #65 this week, he failed to mention that they were also in fact peaking this week.
- Story behind "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" as an Extra: Lou was in a car accident in 1958, and after being in a coma for a time, he woke up with total amnesia. After weeks of this amnesia, doctors selected a last-ditch effort to have him get his memory back - putting him back in familiar surroundings. In this case, it was as a back-up singer for Sam, and during a performance of the song "Over and Over"...it all came back. "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" was played as his biggest hit to date.
- #1 on the Country chart: "You and I"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Sexual Healing"
- #1 on the Album chart: Business as Usual by Men at Work

(17) 18 23 Survivor - Is This Love (9) 17 21 Janet Jackson - Control (5) 16 08 The Human League - Human (1) 15 20 Bruce Springsteen - War (8) 14 17 Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie (2) 13 16 The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong (10) 12 06 Cameo - Word Up (6) Flashback Extra: Peter Gabriel "Big Time"11 09 Lionel Richie - Love Will Conquer All (9) 10 13 Ben E. King - Stand By Me (9)* 09 15 Gregory Abbott - Shake You Down (1) 08 11 Duran Duran - Notorious (2) 07 10 Billy Idol - To Be a Lover (6) 06 02 Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name (1) (also a LDD from Angie and Tracy to Chris, who they've both had bad relationships with and refer to as "a real loser")05 07 Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (2) 04 01 Peter Cetera & Amy Grant - The Next Time I Fall (1) 03 03 Huey Lewis & The News - Hip to Be Square (3)Flashback Extra: Chicago "Will You Still Love Me", which was "two weeks away from hitting the countdown"02 05 The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian (1) 01 04 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way it Is (1)*1986 peak; hit #4 in 1961. NOTES: - Each show since 11-28-81 two weeks ago has had quite a bit of promotion for their year's upcoming year-end special - and this week's no exception.
- Guess what? Yet another week where Casey forgets to read the droppers. Hmmm...three such shows in the past month or so now, though? Makes me wonder if Premiere's editing that out for some reason...
- Not really a lot of standout chart movement this week, with the biggest move up only 7 notches, biggest fall being 11 notches, and the highest drop-off being from #29. Not that any of these are total snail's pace, but each has seen much more notable movement on other weeks.
- What stands out a lot more, however, is only TWO songs peaking this week - and both of 'em in the Top 3! This ties the mark set on 2-7-87, though in that case, the other song was #28.
- Unlike most LDDs, second LDD writer Carol asked Casey to find a song that would fit her dedication. All things considered, I don't think this was a bad choice. :)
- Larry Morgan stated that "Brand New Lover" was headed towards #1 on the Dance chart...when in fact, it was #1 this week. Wonder why it wasn't read?
- A rare example of timing with this week's final extra - Larry Morgan mentioned that Jason Scheff was Chicago's new lead singer, following Peter Cetera, who'd just been heard at #4.
- Another example of Premiere shortening the #1 song - though in this case, they always seem to shorten "The Way it Is", no matter what week it is. Not cool, Premiere! >:(
- #1 on the Country chart: "Hell and High Water" by T. Graham Brown
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Love You Down" by Ready For the World
- #1 on the Album chart: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Live 1975-1985

Regarding your statement about 1983-1988 AT40 episodes where Casey sometimes forgets to read the droppers: When I listen to late 1971-1979 episodes on AT40: The 70's there is never a listing by Casey about the droppers for the week.

REGARDING THIS WEEK'S AT40 THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE DECEMBER 14, 1974 AT40 CHART AFTER LISTENING TO IT THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* This AT40 chart had all 4 former Beatles members with solo songs in the countdown: "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" by John Lennon (The lead off #40 song on this AT40 chart), "Dark Horse" by George Harrison (Debut), "Only You" by Ringo Starr, and "Junior's Farm" by Paul McCartney. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "Morning Side of the Mountain" was originally a song by Tommy Edwards twice in the 1950's? 2) Kiki Dee was the first ever white foreign artist to sing with Motown Records back in 1969? 3) Neil Diamond took an arguement with his record company 3 months to get a song released? 4) The J. Geils Band were once mentioned in some music magazine review described as "primative funk"? 5) Neil Sedaka, who was on the AT40 chart with "Laughter in the Rain", had been absent from the chart since 1963 until this time? 6) The Paul McCartney song "Junior's Farm" was named after a farm in Scotland owned by Paul himself? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the song that took the longest time to reach #1 which was at the 1974 time "Blue Tango" by Leroy Anderson (That would be surpased in later years first by "Hot Child In The City" by Nick Gilder in 1978, then "Sad Eyes" by Robert John in 1979, and then "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis in 1982.) * BLOOPER OR NOT?: Casey called the Al Green song "Sha La La Makes Me Happy" instead of "Sha La La Make Me Happy". * ALSO: 1) Casey played a piece of the original "Everlasting Love" by Robert Knight (and Casey mentioned that at the 1974 time Robert Knight was working as a chemical engineer). 2) Casey told a brief Elvis Presley Christmas story that Elvis one Christmas gave a Hollywood hitchhiker $50 rather than a ride. 3) Did you notice a snap of fingers sound twice tied into some brief story about Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby" song? 4) To tie in with the #1 song of this chart - "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas - Casey mentioned the martial arts first were created in the 1930's by a movie character played by Peter Lorre named Mr. Moto. * And kept intact were a few plugs for the upcoming 1974 AT40 Top 100 of 1974 (But still nothing yet of what year end countdown AT40: The 70's would air during New Years weekend, but I am still predicting it's 1971 or 1973).
Well, I was right about this second weekend in December 2011 prediction of an AT40: The 70's episode for December 14, 1974, now I hope next weekend my third weekend in December 2011 prediction of December 22, 1979 (starting with hour #2) is true.

* And kept intact were a few plugs for the upcoming 1974 AT40 Top 100 of 1974 (But still nothing yet of what year end countdown AT40: The 70's would air during New Years weekend, but I am still predicting it's 1971 or 1973). I think 1973 sounds most likely. On another message board, I read that the year-end shows on both versions of AT40 will be ten years apart. I have my doubts that they'd run the 1981 show. I was thinking that 1987 would be most likely, given that we've heard only four shows from that year, but I doubt that they'd do the 1977 year-ender, inasmuch as they've already done that show, and just recently (at the end of 2009). Unless they're going to feature the full Top 100 of the year, which for some reason I doubt. 2 Well, I was right about this second weekend in December 2011 prediction of an AT40: The 70's episode for December 14, 1974, now I hope next weekend my third weekend in December 2011 prediction of December 22, 1979 (starting with hour #2) is true. Well, I'm not going to tell what year is next week, to preserve the element of surprise, but I'll tell you right now that 1979 is not going to be next week (but it could be featured on Christmas weekend - unless they opt to play one of the AT40 Christmas shows from the early 1970s).

Bummed I missed hour 2 and 3 of the 70s show this week. Quite a few songs that I wanted to hear. According to tunein.com, Big 106.1 plays it on Tuesday night but I contacted the station and that info is out dated. I do appreciate dth1971 and Libra for filling in the things that happen with Casey and the show.
