Well, with the playlist already posted, I was going to take the week off this week. But...there's a lot of interesting stuff in this week's show, so I changed my mind. See my Notes below. :) December 14, 1985 40 -- Pat Benatar - Sex As a Weapon (28) 39 26 Tina Turner - One of the Living (15) 38 39 Artists United Against Apartheid - Sun City (38)37 -- Wham! - I'm Your Man (3) 36 24 Freddie Jackson - You Are My Lady (12) 35 25 Stevie Wonder - Part-Time Lover (1) 34 22 Jan Hammer - Miami Vice Theme (1) 33 40 Night Ranger - Goodbye (17) 32 -- Stevie Wonder - Go Home (10) 31 -- Paul McCartney - Spies Like Us (7) 30 38 Ta Mara and the Seen - Everybody Dance (24) Flashback Extra: James Brown "Living in America"29 35 Sheena Easton - Do it For Love (29)28 37 Bryan Adams & Tina Turner - It's Only Love (15)27 33 Clarence Clemons & Jackson Browne - You're a Friend of Mine (18) LDD: Billy Joel "Just the Way You Are" from Kelly to her parents, her husband, and her baby girl, because she loves them "just the way they are", and she hopes her baby girl doesn't treat her the way she (foolishly) treated her parents when she was growing up26 32 Miami Sound Machine - Conga (10) 25 28 Starpoint - Object of My Desire (25)24 18 Eurythmics & Aretha Franklin - Sisters Are Doin' it For Themselves (18) 23 31 Sting - Love is the Seventh Wave (17) 22 27 Survivor - Burning Heart (2) 21 21 Kool & The Gang - Emergency (18) 20 20 Elton John - Wrap Her Up (20)Flashback Extra: Baltimora "Tarzan Boy"19 23 Stevie Nicks - Talk to Me (4) 18 19 Dire Straits - Walk of Life (7) 17 06 Glenn Frey - You Belong to the City (2) 16 17 The Cars - Tonight She Comes (7) 15 12 Thompson Twins - Lay Your Hands on Me (6) 14 16 Dionne Warwick & Friends - That's What Friends Are For (1) 13 15 Scritti Politti - Perfect Way (11) 12 14 John Cougar Mellencamp - Small Town (6) 11 08 Aretha Franklin - Who's Zoomin' Who? (7) 10 03 Starship - We Built This City (1) Flashback Extra: A-Ha "The Sun Always Shines on TV"09 13 Klymaxx - I Miss You (5) 08 10 ZZ Top - Sleeping Bag (8)LDD: Billy Joel "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" from Joan to all those out there who have been contemplating suicide, as she had and as a previous LDD had (see below); Joan also thanks Billy Joel for writing this song07 11 Simple Minds - Alive and Kicking (3) 06 07 Arcadia - Election Day (6)05 04 Heart - Never (4) 04 09 Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time (2) Flashback Extra: The Hooters "Day By Day"03 05 Lionel Richie - Say You, Say Me (1) 02 02 Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin - Separate Lives (1) 01 01 Mr. Mister - Broken Wings (1)Four songs debut in this week's survey. The four that fall out are: "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire" by David Foster (LW: 36), "Soul Kiss" by Olivia Newton-John (LW: 34), "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears (LW: 30), and "Be Near Me" by ABC (LW: 29). NOTES: - From the "Something That You Don't Hear Every Day" files: A rare instance of a jingle for the #39 song. Back-to-back jingles don't seem to be very common to begin with, so to have the second of the two be for #39 would probably be even less so. It's certainly the first time I've heard it in a show (although, Pete Battistini tells me that they did use one in AT40's first show in 1970).
- Speaking of back-to-back, in this week's survey, the two songs we've heard in all four 1985 shows since September are back-to-back, those being "Part-Time Lover" and "Miami Vice Theme" (both extras on 9-7).
- Speaking of that 9-7 show, the second LDD is one of several responses to that week's second LDD, whose writer had contemplated suicide (song: "Alone Again (Naturally)"). Rob Durkee's list of AT40 Long Distance Dedications reveals that another such response LDD, also with "You're Only Human" as the song, had come in several weeks before this one - unfortunately, we won't hear it, because it was in the 10-26 show, which Charlie Van Dyke hosted.
- We're back to Casey reading off the droppers this week. It seemed like he was teasing forgetting about them this week, though, as he waited till before #32 to read them.
- Casey doesn't mention the biggest drop, but Tina Turner has a hand in both the week's biggest mover and dropper this week. See 12-19-81, two years ago, for an idea of how often that sort of thing happened.
- This week's show features quite a bit of chart trivia in it, with five solo artists in the countdown appearing on their own as well as on non-solo records, the week's question letters, and Paul McCartney making his 100th chart appearance to boot! (among other facts...)
- Strange shortening of "You Belong to the City" this week, with the first two choruses simply repeating, without the verse inbetween them.
- This week, it's once again the single version of "Never" (as heard on 10-12, and two years ago on the week before this one, 12-7).
- #1 on the Country chart: "Nobody Falls Like a Fool" by Earl Thomas Conley
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Caravan of Love" by Isley/Jasper/Isley
- #1 on the Album chart: Miami Vice soundtrack

I know a 1990 Shadoe Stevens hosted AT40 show with a #39 jingle: The August 4, 1990 AT40 episode (The #39 jingle was played before that week's #39 song called "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips, the reason for this is for some radio stations if they desire to skip playing the #40 song "Tic Tac Toe" by Kyper since the song may not be suitable for the station because of lyrical content according to that week's AT40 cue sheet.)

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's REBROADCAST OF THE DECEMBER 20, 1975 AT40 EPISODE AFTER HEARING IT ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* This is one of the November-December 1975 AT40 episodes that started with the famous 1975-1984 "Shuckatoom" theme. And also one with the "NOW, ON WITH THE COUNTDOWN" jingle. * BY THE NUMBERS: 25 songs on this AT40 chart are by the artist who written or co-written their own hits. And there are 3 songs in the Top 10 from movies. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Wing and the Prayer Fife and Drum Corps are the most unusual name in an AT40 chart since the Fife and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who hit with "Amazing Grace" in 1972 (Royal Scots' "Amazing Grace" was heard on 2 1972 AT40 episodes aired this year on the AT40: The 70's show)? 2) The Average White Band are 1 of 3 acts to hit #1 on the album chart and Hot 100 at the same time? The others were the Singing Nun and America. 3) Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby" went gold the week before it made the AT40 chart/top 40 reaches? 4) Earth, Wind, and Fire comes from Chicago (where currently AT40: The 70's can be heard on 94.7 FM WLS True Oldies Chicago)? 4) Gladys Knight and the Pips' first song "Every Beat of My Heart" was charted at the same time on 2 different labels? 5) The song "Convoy" was inspired by the CB radio craze to keep truckers from getting tickets for speeding? 6) The Bee Gees - Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb - in 1956 were to mime an Everly Brothers song but the record broke by accident and the Gibb brothers had to sing the lyrics instead? 7) The song by Jigsaw called "Sky High" is from the movie "The Dragon Flies"? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the song that spent the most weeks in the Top 10 without hitting #1: "You You You" by the Ames Brothers which reached #2 but spent 24 weeks in the Top 10 in 1953. (EXTRA FACT: In the late 1960's Ed Ames of the Ames Brothers went on to a solo career and acting career). * REGARDING THIS WEEK'S #1: "That's The Way I Like It" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band has taken the dropping big from #1 YO YO EFFECT from #1 to #2 to #4 and then back to #1 since 1966 when "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vauldeville Band dropped from #1 to #3 and then back to #1. (Another song would do this way in 1977: "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" by Andy Gibb which dropped from #1 to #2 to #3 and then back to #1). * ALSO: 1) The LIVE version of "Rock and Roll All Night" by KISS was played. 2) Casey told a Christmas related story regarding Jackie Wilson that he had to earn money on the street so he can get a music box for his mother for Christmas, and Casey mentioned that in this 1975 year Jackie Wilson suffered a heart attack/stroke while in a concert and is in serious condition in a hospital (Jackie Wilson would pass away in January 1984 after long hospital/coma stays). * AND: 1) Kept intact in this episode is a plug for a ABC WIDE WORLD SPECIAL MOVIE that Casey Kasem had a part in it as an record company executive called "Mr. and Ms.: The Bandstand Mystery" which was produced by Dick Clark with part of the movile filmed on the American Bandstand set. How come this "Mr. and Ms. Bandstand Mystery" movie hasn't had a DVD release as of yet even with approval of the Dick Clark estate or something like that? (ABC, as you know, would buy out Watermark, then owners of AT40, in 1982 and keep it in hands even with the 1988 Shadoe Stevens takeover and the original AT40 demise for American radio stations in June-July 1994 with the last 1/2 year for foreign markets carrying AT40 but not in the USA handled by Radio Express). 2) Also kept intact are a few plugs for the AT40 1975 year end Top 100.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next week is Christmas weekend, but what will stations carrying AT40: The 70's carry depending on how radio stations carry Christmas music on Sunday, December 25?: a) Carrying a regular AT40: The 70's episode, like maybe the December 22, 1979 AT40 episode which starts with hour #2? b) Carrying a 1971 or 1973 AT40 Christmas countdown episode? ...and for New Years weekend (December 31, 2011-January 1, 2012) we have yet to find out what AT40: The 70's (and AT40: The 80's) will carry for their year end countdowns (My guess for this years AT40: The 70's year end countdown could be the Top 40 of 1971 or 1973).

Ha, that's kinda funny, actually. They must've done a similar thing back on 6/27/87 (aired at the end of this past June) - the first three songs in the second hour - #30, #29, #28 - all had jingles; #28 was "I Want Your Sex".

Since I posted for the original airing of 12/26/87 back in 2008, I won't go for a second time. Here's a link to that posting, however.

Five songs debuted this week: "Say You Will" - Foreigner (#33) "Honestly" - Stryper (#36) "Everywhere" - Fleetwood Mac (#38) "What Have I Done To Deserve This" - The Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield (#39) "Push It" - Salt N Pepa (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "The One I Love" - R.E.M. Even on Christmas Day 1994 then south surburban of Chicago Top 40 radio station WBUS 99.9 FM was carrying Casey's Top 40 (which I had to listen to after the old AT40 ceased from American airwaves in Summer 1994) which at the time was doing the first week of the two week 1994 Top 100 year end countdown. Stay tuned for results this Christmas Sunday morning (December 25, 2011) from WLS 94.7 FM Chicago...

Darryl, I so hope that WLS airs American Top 40: The 70s, especially if I can't find any stations running it on live stream on Saturday morning, as much of my Christmas Eve starting at 1:00 that afternoon is going to be very busy, between going to several different church services and getting ready for my family to come over.

My usual station is playing all Christmas today as I suspected. I tried Kool 108 in Anoka MN and they were playing Christmas music with Casey's voice the way it sounds today.

Let me repost Libra's recap of the 12/26/1987 show from 2008 with some alterations and additions December 26, 1987 40 -- Salt 'N Pepa - Push It (19) 39 -- Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done to Deserve This? (2) 38 -- Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (14) 37 36 The Kane Gang - Motortown (36) 36 -- Stryper - Honestly (23) 35 40 Men Without Hats - Pop Goes the World (20) 34 39 Paul Carrack - Don't Shed a Tear (9) 33 -- Foreigner - Say You Will (6) 32 34 New Order - True Faith (32)31 37 Natalie Cole - I Live For Your Love (13) AT40 Extra: John Cougar Mellencamp "Small Town", as the song that inspired DJ Chip Arledge of WFCB from Chillicothe, Ohio to ask on-air why Mellencamp never played small towns. Mellencamp would later play a double show there after the townspeople put together a petition, signed it, and sent it to him. Flashback Extra: Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine "Can't Stay Away From You"30 35 Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love (9) 29 12 Richard Marx - Should've Known Better (3) 28 10 Sting - We'll Be Together (7) 27 28 Laura Branigan - The Power of Love (26) 26 31 Roger - I Want to Be Your Man (3) 25 32 Eric Carmen - Hungry Eyes (4) LDD: Kenny Rogers "Through the Years" from a woman in New Jersey to her husband of 3 years who had also been her college sweetheart24 19 Michael Bolton - That's What Love is All About (19) 23 26 Prince - I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (10) 22 27 Icehouse - Crazy (14) Flashback Extra: The Cure "Just Like Heaven" which was at #41 that week.21 17 Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - (I've Had) The Time of My Life (1) 20 23 Expose - Seasons Change (1) 19 21 Def Leppard - Animal (19)18 22 Heart - There's the Girl (12) 17 07 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth (1) 16 24 Tiffany - Could've Been (1) 15 20 The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter (2) 14 14 Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) (14)13 18 Elton John - Candle in the Wind (6) 12 15 Taylor Dayne - Tell it to My Heart (7) 11 09 Steve Winwood - Valerie (9) Flashback Extra: Cher "I Found Someone"10 16 INXS - Need You Tonight (1) 09 13 John Cougar Mellencamp - Cherry Bomb (8) LDD: Terry Jacks "Seasons in the Sun" from a woman named Dale to her mother for never losing faith in her, despite her previous drug habits08 08 Pretty Poison - Catch Me (I'm Falling) (8)07 11 Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel (1) 06 06 Jody Watley - Don't You Want Me (6)05 04 Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love (4) 04 05 George Harrison - Got My Mind Set on You (1) 03 02 Whitesnake - Is This Love (2) Flashback Extra: Rick Astley "Never Gonna Give You Up"02 03 Whitney Houston - So Emotional (1) 01 01 George Michael - Faith (1)NOTES: - I kind of wonder why Casey mentioned the "Small Town" story so soon, given that "Cherry Bomb" was later on the countdown. Yeah, it made a nice segueway into "Small Town" as an extra, but still, it's not like he needed an excuse to play Mellencamp that week.
- Shortened: "The Time of My Life", "Animal" (both went straight from second verse to end chorus), "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Cherry Bomb" (second verse skipped)
- Come to think of it, it seems kinda sketchy to shorten "Cherry Bomb" that week.
[/li][li]I altered the Flashback Extras since in the last listing "I Found Someone" was the Hour #1 Extra (with no other extras added) [/li][li]Other than "I Found Someone", "Just Like Heaven" was the only other repeat extra from the last airing (R.E.M.'s "The One I Love" which was a dropper and Patrick Swayze's "She's Like The Wind" were the other two extras.) [/li][li] Speaking of droppers, Casey mentioned the droppers again but only the songs that fell off and not the acts who sang them. [/li][li] Going back to "Just Like Heaven", Larry Morgan did not mention Charlie Van Dyke's name when bringing up the fact that the song's only week in the countdown was during a guest host week but when you go back to the 7/16/1988 show, Shadoe Stevens was credited when "Sweet Child Of Mine" was an optional extra. [/li][li] In an eerie coincidence Casey mentioned Roger's brother Larry Troutman when in April 1999 Larry would eventually murder Roger and later committed suicide. [/li][li] #1 Dance Song: "So Emotional" - Whitney Houston [/li][li] #1 Black Singles Song: "The Way You Make Me Feel" - Michael Jackson [/li][li] #1 Country Song: "Somewhere Tonight" - Highway 101 [/li][li] #1 Album: "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack

I did also notice that they seemed to shorten different songs than they did the last time - "Time of My Life" still was, but I'm wondering if that's original. The other three I listed were not this time.

The "Small Town" story is now fixed.
And yeah "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" was originally shortened there. That's just wrong but then again on the 12/22/1979 broadcast, "Tonight's The Night" was ridiculously shortened as well.

GUESS WHAT? THE WLS/CHICAGO AT40 RELATED CHRISTMAS DAY MIRACLE LIVES ON! WLS 94.7 CHICAGO DID AIR THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE DECEMBER 22, 1979 AT40 EPISODE THIS MORNING ON CHRISTMAS DAY 20!!! WOO WOO! And now here are my thoughts...
* This show as always for 1979 shows (plus October - December 1978 shows) starts with Hour #2 without playing the first hour. The AT40: The 70's broadcast started off with #32: "Pop Musik" by M. Of course the 2 AT40 Archives songs and Long Distance Dedication segment was kept intact in the show. * Casey played a drop piece of then 6 year old in the 1950's Barry Gordon's "Nuttin' For Christmas" to tie in with many question letters regarding the youngest singer to make the Top 40 (Barry Gordon later grew up to be an actor in adulthood, and though not mentioned by Casey, I know Barry Gordon as the voice for many years in TV commercials of the Nestle Quik/Nesquik Bunny!), and Casey also played a drop piece of "Teen Angel" by Mark Dining that it was originally written as a joke song but was later to tie in with a real tragic thing regarding a teen's death or something like that. * Casey even repeated a story he told in the 1979 year regarding Barry Manilow's akward reunion with his father. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Tom Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida? 2) Prince's real name is Roger Nelson? 3) Kenny Loggins gets inspiration for his songs from his dreams? 4) Stevie Wonder's "Journey Though the Secret Life of Plants" (which includes the song "Send One Your Love") had the album cover scented? * And, for those who remember the occassional AT40 medleys/montages of the AT40 years (including the most frequent in 1988-1993 during the Shadoe Stevens AT40 years): There was a medley of the 4 biggest Christmas songs: 1) White Christmas 2) Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer 3) Winter Wonderland 4) Santa Claus is Comin' To Town * Also: The last #1 song of the 1970's on this AT40 episode was "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes (Casey said that the drink tied to this song is made with rum and coconit) * Plus kept intact are plugs for the upcoming New Years AT40 specials, one of the Top 50 songs of 1979, and one of the Top 50 songs of the 1970's, which brings to some final thoughts...
...will next weekend's AT40: The 70's episode be the year end countdown of 1971 or 1973 (These 2 years I'm speculating) or some other year? And what are the chances in the future for AT40: The 70's to run the January 5, 1980 AT40 Top 50 1970's songs special but not play the first hour of it to make it 3 hours starting with hour #2 unless the first hour of it will be made optional to stations like the AT40: The 70's 1979 Top 40 disco songs special was?
AND TO ALL CLASSIC AT40 AND CASEY KASEM FANS ALL OVER: HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

...will next weekend's AT40: The 70's episode be the year end countdown of 1971 or 1973 (These 2 years I'm speculating) or some other year? It's confirmed that next weekend will be the Top 40 of 1973. The next two weekends on "AT40: The '80s" features the Top 100 of 1983.

I think Premiere's cut job on 11/21 was worse, but that's just me. Course, I'm also used to hearing the song faded out during the chorus before the instrumental break - and this is on regular radio, not during a show.

Since the two AT40 shows I mentioned are year-ending shows, I won't mention much except the optional extras for both.

For Top 40 of 1973: "Live And Let Die" - Paul McCartney & Wings "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" - George Harrison "Ramblin' Man" - Allman Brothers Band

Unlike '85, however, AT40 compiled this year's chart themselves.
- There were no jingles for any songs. Wonder if they'll be restricted to the "top 40" portion of the survey, or if the Top 100 was in fact jingle-free?
- DISPARITY: "I Know There's Something Going On" is #83 on this year-end survey...but was all the way up at #20 on Billboard's. :o Also, these ten songs did not make Billboard's survey: "Burning Down the House", "It's Raining Again", "Muscles", "Cum On Feel the Noize", "The Look of Love", "Delirious", "Suddenly Last Summer", "Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)", "Heartlight", and "King of Pain". Quiet Riot were placed in 1984, but none of the rest made any year's survey (not even the #3-peaking "King of Pain"!).
- Top Female Artist (Singles & Albums combined): Laura Branigan
- Billboard's Top New Act of 1983: Culture Club
- Billboard's Top Group (Singles & Albums combined): Men at Work
- Billboard's Top Singles Artist, Top Soul Singles Artist, Top Soul Albums Artist, Top Dance & Disco Artist, and Top Male Artist: Michael Jackson
- Billboard's Top Singles Group: The Police
- Also, Men at Work are the year's Top Australian Act and The Stray Cats are the year's Top American Newcomer.
- This part of the Top 100 was produced by Laurie Kremming rather than Toby James Petty, who's produced most of the past year's aired shows.

A lot of the songs from 51 to 100 (along with the optionals) really hold up today, in terms of still getting airplay. Looking at other top 100 year-end lists of the 1980s, I'd say that 1983 or 1985 is the strongest.

But even knowing the reason why, it still stands out. All things considered, looking at Billboard's chart for 1983...this was a year with quite a few long-running-but-lower-peaking songs finishing higher solely due to their long chart runs.

Allow me to explain the disparity of "I Know There's Something Going On" between AT40 and Billboard.
First of all, Billboard counted one song's entire chart span in the Hot 100 whereas AT40 only tabulated the song's weeks in the Top 50 (counting the frozen week, Frida was below the Top 50 for 13 of her 29 weeks on the chart). As far as the frozen weeks were concerned, according to vince on the AT40 Fun & Games Board, it was not counted on Billboard's survey and on AT40 the frozen week was averaged with the 12/25/1982 chart and the 1/8/1983 chart although Frida was below the Top 50 by that time (her average would've been 54) it likely wasn't factored in the tabulations.
The tabulations were also vastly different. While Billboard's rankings were based on an inverse point system, AT40 had a completely different ranking system as Rob Durkee explained (via vince). 1 point for a week at #50, 2 points for #49, 3 points for #48, etc up until 40 points for #11 then the Top 10 goes like this:
#10: 42 points #9: 44 points #8: 46 points #7: 48 points #6: 50 points #5: 52 points #4: 54 points #3: 56 points #2: 58 points And the #1 position changes on a week-to-week basis. For a song that peaks at #1 for one week, it gets 80 points. For two weeks at #1, it gets 90 more points giving it 170 total points. For three weeks at #1, it gets 100 more points giving it 270 total points, etc.
Of course Frida peaked at #13 so those Top 10 points didn't matter. Here's where Frida's calculations stand.
Billboard: 1568 points (not counting frozen week) AT40: 383 points
