I already knew what was going on with the difference in Frida's year-end rankings (I didn't know the points, just the general idea), I just figured I'd point it out anyway seeing as it's a 60-plus point difference.
That is an interesting way of considering the week of 1/1/83 though. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they just double-counted 12/25 - I think in later years, frozen weeks counted as an additional week for songs peaking during that week, at least they did when Casey gave the number of weeks spent there on a given show.

To answer Darryl's comment on "Why Me", AT40 used the exact same tabulation as Billboard did. AT40 had a later cutoff date than Billboard.
Meanwhile here are Premiere's shows this weekend.
Here are the optional extras for the second half of the Top 100 of 1983. "Say Say Say" - Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson "Heart & Soul" - Huey Lewis & The News "1999" - Prince "Rio" - Duran Duran
"AT40: The '70s" this week is back to a regular countdown. This week they feature 1/8/1977.
Three songs debuted this week: "Fly Like An Eagle" - Steve Miller Band (#35) "Free Bird (Live Version)" - Lynrd Skynrd (#38) "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)" - Barbra Streisand (#40)
Three songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "You Are The Woman" - Firefall (#23) "Love Ballad" - L.T.D. (#34) "Mademoiselle" - Styx (#36)
Biggest Mover: "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith (#28 to #20) Biggest Dropper: "Nights Are Forever Without You" - England Dan & John Ford Coley (#18 to #36)
Original extras: None
Premiere optional extras: "Night Moves" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (#49) "Hard Luck Woman" - Kiss (#41) "Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac (#71; highest debut)

- Missing Billboard's Top 100 on this one: "One Thing Leads to Another", "Uptown Girl", "Islands in the Stream", and "All Night Long (All Night)", all except the first of which were transferred to 1984. The other one didn't make either year (despite hitting #4)!
- The Top 100 of 1983 would be the last Casey-hosted show with the current theme package, including the "Shuckatoom" theme - but right after #32 "Tell Her About It", they played a bumper that sort of serves as a preview for their next theme package.
- "Gloria" is the song that spent the most weeks on the Hot 100 from a woman (up till that point, anyway).
- Talk about your Freudian slips...Casey introed "Beat It" as the song that spent 7 weeks at #1. Oy!
- Hmmm...The Police have often had to debunk myths that "Every Breath You Take" is a love song. Casey's intro at #1...certainly didn't help matters.
- We're back to Toby James Petty as Premiere producer this week.
- Billboard's Top Female Album Artist: Stevie Nicks
- Billboard's Top Album Group (and Albums + Singles combined): Men at Work
- Billboard's #1 Producer of the Year: Quincy Jones
- #1 Soul Song of the Year: "Sexual Healing"
- #1 Album of the Year: Thriller
- Top Duo of the Year: Hall & Oates
- Top Pop Artist, Top Soul Artist, Top Dance Artist, Top Songwriter of the Year: Michael Jackson
- Billboard's Top Female Singles Artist: Irene Cara. "Flashdance" is also the top movie song of the year.
- Casey didn't say what Billboard's top Country song of the year, but did mention that "Islands in the Stream" was the top Country song according to American Country Countdown (a counterpart to AT40).
- There must be slightly different versions of the show produced for different regions - when I posted this right after hearing the show yesterday, Larry Morgan's end credits were the same as they'd been previously. On WCRZ, however, his end credits now included Scott Lakefield (also administrator of the AT40 Proboard) and a Mike Savage, and he actually gave his own name last as well. WCRZ, by the way, played all four extras again. It'll be nice if this is a sign of things to come...but we'll see.

You left out the #1 Country Song of the Year which was "Islands In The Stream". I missed that, among other things (like Stevie Nicks being the top female album artist). It seems I also heard two different closings to the same show yesterday; I've already posted about it on the AT40 board.

And this was the first week of the new AT40 jingle package for 1977-1978 featuring a new "ON WITH THE COUNTDOWN" jingle with music background, an instrumental pre commercial break jingle, and an "American Top 40" jingle that sounds similar to Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight". * Regarding 1976 feats in this episode: 1) Hall and Oates' "She's Gone" and "Sara Smile" were the 2 long running hits for 1976, 2) The #1 male singles artist for 1976 is Barry Manilow, 3) The #1 album act of 1976 is Aerosmith, and 4)The most charted producer of songs in 1976 was Freddie Perren. * BY THE NUMBERS: 10 acts on the AT40 chart were first timers in the countdown. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "Whispering" (part of a medley by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band with "Churchez La Femme" and "Se Si Bon") was originally first done in 1921? 2) The Jacksons, originally the Jackson 5, were sometimes called The Jackson 8 since their 3 sisters join them in thier concerts? 3) Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. became the 5th. husband/wife duo to hit #1 up to that 1977 date of this AT40 show. QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding female singer in the rock era with most weeks at #1 ("The Wayward Wind" by Gogi Grant wiht #7 weeks at #1 - Oddly, that record would be surpassed towards the end of the 1977 year when "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone spent 10 weeks at #1, and in 1981-1982 Olivia Newton John tied the 10 week #1 female record with "Physical".), and 2) Regarding the biggest spoken word record in the rock era: The #1 song from 1961 by Jimmy Dean called "Big Bad John" (Even a drop piece of "Big Bad John" was played!) * Besides a drop piece of "Big Bad John", other drop pieces played on the show were pieces of the Chiffons' "He's So Fine" and George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" to tie in with the song "This Song" which deals with the copyright lawsuit on these 2 songs (but has the case settled since it was pending in 1977?), and a piece of "Only You" by the Platters to tie in with Casey's story on whatever became of the Platters group (One of the members of the Platters, Tony Williams, got his start working in a car wash, believe it or not, this "Whatever happened to the Platters" story lead into the #5 song on the AT40 chart: Rose Royce's "Car Wash"!) * BLOOPERS OR NOT?: 1) One of the debuts this week was a live version of "Free Bird" by Lynrd Skynyrd, but Casey didn't mention this song charted before in 1975 in a studio version! 2) Casey mentioned the just dropped out of #1 song "Tonight's The Night" by Rod Stewart spent 7 weeks at #1, but wasn't it 8 weeks at #1 if you include the holiday off week for Billboard on January 1, 1977 (That was the first week Billboard magazine skipped 1 week during a Christmas/New Year's season). * AND FINALLY: WLS 94.7 FM did play one of the AT40: The 70's Optional Extras this week following the first hour: "Night Moves" by Bob Seger (Larry Morgan, now mentioning himself in the end credits of AT40: The 70's, said that Bob Seger's songs are now on iTunes as of 2011).

* Besides a drop piece of "Big Bad John", other drop pieces played on the show were pieces of the Chiffons' "He's So Fine" and George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" to tie in with the song "This Song" which deals with the copyright lawsuit on these 2 songs (but has the case settled since it was pending in 1977?) It would prove to be only a moral, and temporary, defeat in the end. When it came time to consider liable earnings, "My Sweet Lord" 's contribution to the sales of its parent album, All Things Must Pass, was taken into account, and the judge decided on a figure of $1,599,987 to be owed. The dispute over damages became complicated when Harrison's former manager Allen Klein, who had represented him during the court proceedings, purchased the copyright to "He's So Fine" in 1978 - yet continued the suit against Harrison! In February 1981, a district judge decided that Klein had acted improperly, and it was agreed that Harrison would pay him $587,000 - the exact amount that Klein had paid for it in the first place, so that he would gain nothing from the deal. Harrison in turn would take over ownership of "He's So Fine", thus owning both songs. The dispute would drag out into the 90s - long after Harrison's final Top 40 hits in 1988 - but the 1981 ruling would ultimately be upheld.

A tidbit about the January 14, 1984 AT40 episode: A week earlier on the January 7, 1984 AT40 show (when Charlie Van Dyke guest hosted for Casey Kasem) it was the episode where for the last time the famous Shuckatoom theme song first used in 1975 (first at the end, then a few weeks later at the beginning, then by 1977 heard at the start and beginning of each hour plus the end, and by September 1979 demoted to just the AT40 opening) was heard since that January 14, 1984 week a new AT40 music theme package started.

Like the 12/26/87 show a few weeks ago, I also originally posted for this show the first time around. You could probably do better with a fresh posting of this one than with editing what I had already, honestly. (I don't even have any notes for this one.)

Some things to note. Premiere apparently cut Casey's affiliate mentions in Hour #1. They were originally played before #37. I seem to recall Premiere also doing this during the 6/4/1983 show a few years back. The Nena song played was the English version which was the B-side to "99 Luftballoons". It was played only once during its' AT40 run. Larry's intro to "I Want A New Drug" mentions the song serving as the inspiration to Ray Parker Jr's #1 hit "Ghostbusters". Actually, Huey Lewis & The News were initially offered to write a theme song for "Ghostbusters" but turned it down. Parker then did the song and stole the guitar riffs from "I Want A New Drug" leading to a lawsuit filed by Lewis which led to an out-of-court settlement. However, Lewis commented on the lawsuit on "Behind The Music" which violated a confidentiality agreement and Parker sued Lewis. Coincidentally the next song played after "I Want A New Drug" was Ray Parker Jr's "I Just Can't Get Over Loving You" in which Parker sings "Every Breath You Take". I wonder if Sting has ever heard that song. #1 Country Song: "Slow Burn" - T.G. Shepard #1 Soul: "Joanna" - Kool & The Gang #1 Album: "Thriller" - Michael Jackson #1 Dance/Disco: "Say It Isn't So" - Daryl Hall & John Oates

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE JANUARY 12, 1974 AFTER LISTENING TO IT THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Temptations first hit the Top 40 in 1964 with "The Way You Do The Things You Do"? 2) Bryon MacGregor (DJ for Detroit, Michigan, USA/Windsor, Ontario, Canada Top 40 radio station CKLW) didn't want to receive his royalties for his "Americans" single and have the royalties for it donated to the American Red Cross? 3) Speaking of Bryon MacGregor's "Americans", the music in the background was done by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra? 4) Loggins and Messina had to pinch hit for an opening act during a show at one time? 5) The Staple Singers were once worried that radio stations would stop playing their songs since they were sac-religious? 6) Al Green started sang spirital music at age 16? 7) Al Green's original group, the Soul Mates, missed hitting the top 40 reaches on the Billboard Hot chart in 1967 with the song "Back Up Train" that reached #41? 8) Barbra Streisand is one of the many artists to hit the music charts besides winning a movie Oscar (The others Casey mmentioned were Walter Brennan, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Burl Ives, and Patty Duke; but Cher would later make the list by the late 1980's) 9) Paul McCartney and Wings' "Helen Wheels" may remind you of the Beach Boys song "Little Duece Coupe"? and 10) When Barry White performed at the Felt Forum in New York City circa 1973, he was nicknamed by critics as "The COOL DUDE"? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the female artist with the most #1 hits, which was Connie Francis (That record would later be broken by Cher, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Madonna, and Mariah Carey in years to come). * UNUSUAL SONGS IN THE COUNTDOWN: 1) "Just You 'N Me" by Chicago which was #26, which, for all you WLS AM 890 Chicago Musicradio old school fans, was the last song WLS AM 890 Chicago played as a Top 40/AC/talk leaning station on August 23, 1989 before it was all Talkradio WLS 890 AM. 2) The comedy skit record by Cheech and Chong called "Sister Mary Elephant" (I will give a little more details about it in the NOSTALGIA section), and 3) Even though Christmas was passed, there was a Christmas leaning song in the AT40 chart: Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December" (I wonder if next weekend's AT40: The 70's show will be the January 20, 1979 episode originally 4 hours but starting with hour #2 that has the Eagles' Christmas song "Please Come Home for Christmas", I know AT40: The 80's has played at least 1 early 1981 episode when Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" was on the chart, and AT40: The 80's has aired the January 19, 1985 AT40 show but not yet the January 26, 1985 show when Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas" was on the chart though the January 19, 1985 and January 26, 1985 AT40 shows are safe in the AT40: The 80's decisions since the Janaury 5, 1985 and January 12, 1985 AT40 shows that featured "Do They Know It's Christmas" were guest hosted by Charlie Van Dyke which was one of 3 occassions CVD guest hosted for Casey 2 weeks in a row in the original AT40 era). * BLOOPERS OR NOT?: 1) Casey called the Temptations record "Come On and Let Your Hair Down" instead of "Let Your Hair Down", 2) Casey mentioned Grand Funk (Railroad) had 2 top 40 hits, but up to "Walk Like a Man" they had 5! 3) In the Question Letter regarding female #1 Casey called a Roberta Flack song "The First Time Ever" instead of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". * ALSO: 1) Casey played the B side of Donny Osmond's "Are You Lonesome Tonight" single called "When I Fall in Love". 2)Casey played a drop piece of the original "You're Sixteen" by Johnny Burnette to tie in with the Ringo Starr remake version. * FINALLY: 2 UNUSUAL QUOTES SAID BY CASEY IN THIS SHOW: 1) "Oh oh, another debut song!" 2) "Whatever happened to Mrs. Miller?" ...why is that?

The four that drop out are: "Sleeping Bag" by ZZ Top (LW: 38), "Election Day" by Arcadia (LW: 35), "Love is the Seventh Wave" by Sting (LW: 30), and "Perfect Way" by Scritti Politti (LW: 25). NOTES: - With this show, we now have had FIVE chronological months in a row now, dating back to September 1985 - yowza. :o I'm willing to bet this is where that streak will end, though.
- With this show, we now have another member of the "four in a row" club that inducted "Part-Time Lover" and "Miami Vice Theme" last month. This month it's "Separate Lives" - 10-12-85 was its debut week, and this week is its last in the 40.
- Just like the week before, there was no softer jingle this week.
- Unlike the week before, however, Casey did announce the two 10-notch-moving Biggest Movers this week. It was probably convenient, though, that also unlike last week, the two songs in question were back-to-back this week (and incidentally, were the two debuts of the week before).
- File "Forever" under the list of songs we've heard by other means before hearing them as a Top 40 hit; its sole week in the 40 was 7-20-85, which we've yet to hear.
- Casey introed "Alive and Kicking" as falling four notches to 12. OOPS!
- You can plainly tell that the second LDD really affected Casey - there's more emotion in his voice as he intros the dedication, and after he finishes the letter, he states that the police department in Mary's area would be able to help her.
- BLAH at Premiere for shortening the song, though. Yeah, we hear it all the time, but this isn't really a circumstance that calls for an edit.
- As already mentioned, this show first aired in 2008. All of the Premiere extras, except one - "Let's Go All the Way" - were the same as those in '08.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "That's What Friends Are For"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Never Be You" by Rosanne Cash
- #1 on the Album chart: The Broadway Album by Barbra Streisand

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S REBROADCAST OF THE JANUARY 24, 1976 AT40 EPISODE THAT I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Linda Ronstat is known as the "remake queen" (But I know who was the remake king as Casey said in a 1983 AT40 - Donny Osmond!), 2) The Eagles have had Buffalo Springfield legacy according to Neil Young? 3) The Eagles were said by a music critic that they perform tear stained country rock? 4) The Bay City Rollers got their name from a city in Michigan in the USA thanks to a pin on the map thing? 5) "Baby Face" (on this chart done by the Wing and a Prayer Fife and Drum Corps) has been done in at least 1 version in 6 decades from the 1920's to the 1970's? 6) A high school football team in Cadillac, Michigan has used the music by KISS to help win their football games? and 7) C.W. McCall owns his respects as a recording artist thanks to being an ad agent in Omaha and working on commercials for a regional product called Old Home Bread ("Old Home is good bread!" or as Homer Simpson would say: "MMMMMMMMMM...OLD HOME BREAD!"). * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the Top 40 acts in the rock era who are named Mr. or Miss: There was Mr. Acker Bilk with "Stranger on the Shore" and Miss Toni Fisher with "The Big Hurt". * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 4 remakes/redos in the Top 40, and there were 23 songs written or co-written by the artist(s) who perform them in the Top 40. * BLOOPERS: 1) Did I hear Casey say for the number of British acts in the countdown that there were 8 and later he said there were 11? He must have lost count or something! 2) Casey mentioned Linda Ronstadt's song remakes of Betty Everett's "You're No Good", Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Tracks of My Tears", but Casey forgot to mentioned Linda's remake of the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved"! * ALSO: 1) For the 1976 version of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" the opening part of the original 1962 version leads off the song. 2) The live version of KISS' "Rock 'n Roll All Nite" is played. 3) Kept intact is a plug done by Casey for the upcoming Dick Clark produced American Music Awards to air the following weekend of the original AT40 weekend date.

* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Linda Ronstat is known as the "remake queen" (But I know who was the remake king as Casey said in a 1983 AT40 - Donny Osmond!) Yep. Funny that you cited a 1983 show with Donny as the "king" of the remakes, for it was 2/5/83 where Casey again made mention of Linda as "queen". It might've been 2/5 for Donny as well, but I don't quite remember right this second. 4) The Bay City Rollers got their name from a city in Michigan in the USA thanks to a pin on the map thing? "My hometown..." (Think of Springsteen's voice since that song's #6 on the other show this weekend.)6) A high school football team in Cadillac, Michigan has used the music by KISS to help win their football games? Also told 6/16/84, with "Rock and Roll All Nite" as an AT40 Extra. Oddly enough, that show also had a LDD coming from Midland (which, along with Bay City and Saginaw, make up Michigan's Tri-Cities. :)) * BLOOPERS: 1) Did I hear Casey say for the number of British acts in the countdown that there were 8 and later he said there were 11? He must have lost count or something! 2) Casey mentioned Linda Ronstadt's song remakes of Betty Everett's "You're No Good", Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Tracks of My Tears", but Casey forgot to mentioned Linda's remake of the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved"! He might have gotten it right seven years later (2/5/83), but again, I don't quite remember. I'll listen to it later to see.

32 36 A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines on TV (20)
The followup to the #1, 'Take On Me'. This followup largely forgotten by many makers of "one-hit wonder" lists in coming years
