There seems to be a conflict between my Joel Whitburn Top 40 book that says 5 weeks and my Fred Bronson Number One Hits book that says 6 weeks.

"AT40: The '80s" this week presents 2/21/1987 Happy early birthday. :) February 21, 1987 40 -- Stacey Q - We Connect (35) 39 26 Gregory Abbott - Shake You Down (1) 38 -- Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over (2) 37 -- Club Nouveau - Lean on Me (1) 36 -- Genesis - Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (3) 35 39 Wang Chung - Let's Go (9) LDD: Kermit The Frog "The Rainbow Connection" from 13-year-old Becky in Newburg, OR to her brother Troy, who means a lot to her, but who is mentally retarded due to a stroke he had when he was two; "The Rainbow Connection" is his favorite song34 -- Europe - The Final Countdown (8) 33 24 Benjamin Orr - Stay the Night (24) 32 20 Genesis - Land of Confusion (4) Flashback Extra: Sweet Sensation "Hooked on You"31 34 Cameo - Candy (21) 30 19 Glass Tiger - Someday (7) 29 23 Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie (2) 28 36 Expose - Come Go With Me (5) 27 33 Jeff Lorber featuring Karyn White - The Facts of Love (27)26 35 Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now (1) 25 29 Dead or Alive - Brand New Lover (15) 24 25 Corey Hart - Can't Help Falling in Love (24)23 28 Eddie Money - I Wanna Go Back (14) 22 26 Janet Jackson - Let's Wait Awhile (2) 21 22 Chico DeBarge - Talk to Me (21)Flashback Extra: The Bangles "Walking Down Your Street"20 09 Boston - We're Ready (9) 19 27 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Mandolin Rain (4) 18 Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You (14) 17 15 Luther Vandross - Stop to Love (15) 16 07 Billy Vera & The Beaters - At This Moment (1) 15 13 Cinderella - Nobody's Fool (13) 14 17 The Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) (7) 13 16 Peter Gabriel - Big Time (8) 12 18 Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself (5) 11 14 Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram - Somewhere Out There (2) Flashback Extra: Chris DeBurgh "The Lady in Red", which was six (!) weeks away from hitting the countdown10 03 Cyndi Lauper - Change of Heart (3) 09 12 Ready For the World - Love You Down (9)08 02 Madonna - Open Your Heart (1) 07 10 Lionel Richie - Ballerina Girl (7)06 11 The Jets - You Got it All (3) 05 04 Samantha Fox - Touch Me (I Want Your Body) (4) LDD: Dire Straits "So Far Away" from Vera in Nitro, Chekoslovakia (!), to Artie in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a TV producer traveling with a hockey team who's "so far away" from her now, but who she'll always remember after having met him in the hotel where she works04 08 Huey Lewis & The News - Jacob's Ladder (1) 03 06 Chicago - Will You Still Love Me (3)Flashback Extra: Steve Winwood "The Finer Things"02 05 The Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands to Yourself (2) 01 01 Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet (1)NOTES: - Looks like another week where Casey forgot to read the droppers.
- "We Connect" sounded rather different from when it was heard in last year's 3/14 show. Come to think of it, so did "Let's Wait Awhile" (though I think that one was simply the album version of the song).
- "Lean on Me" must have always received the soft jingle despite being more of an uptempo song, huh? It happened on 3/14 as well.
- "Stay the Night", more of a slower song, on the other hand, received the standard one, as did "At This Moment". Meanwhile, "Change of Heart", which has a rock flavor, also got a soft jingle.
- Speaking of jingles...there were quite a lot of them this week, 16 of them! :o
- "Hooked on You", though not a Top 40 hit until 1989, was originally released in 1987, and was peaking at #64 this week.
- Eerily, this week's show does feature an obituary (between #27 and #26). In this case, it's that of Liberace, who passed away on February 4.
- Casey must've really liked counting down the Top 5 albums of the week in 1987. (He also read them three weeks later on 3/14, and on 11/7.) Here they are for this week: #5 - Different Light by The Bangles, #4 - The Way it Is by Bruce Hornsby & The Range, #3 - Night Songs by Cinderella, #2 - License to Ill by The Beastie Boys, and #1...
- #1 on the Country chart: "Straight to the Heart" by Crystal Gayle
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Have You Ever Loved Somebody?" by Freddie Jackson
- #1 on the Album chart: Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
Would've been better if I had been able to listen to the show this past weekend. A movie date on Friday (when it aired on WWIS) and my vacation the rest of the weekend prevented me from listening to the show. At least there was a little chart fact on one of the optional extras this time. On my previous weekend vacation (when the 12/7/1985 show aired) there was apparently nothing on the op extras at all. BTW you thought the six weeks away fact on "The Lady In Red" was surprising, you should've heard "Genius Of Love" last week.

At least there was a little chart fact on one of the optional extras this time. On my previous weekend vacation (when the 12/7/1985 show aired) there was apparently nothing on the op extras at all. I listened to it some time after the fact - all four had chart action that week, actually: "Life in a Northern Town" was "inching its way toward the Top 40". "Spies Like Us" was #41. "How Will I Know" and "My Hometown" debuted at #60 and #55, respectively. But I posted that well before I got around to using streaming regularly (heck, I didn't even have a laptop in '09!). Up until 2010 (with only a couple exceptions), all I had to rely on was WCRZ's timeslot.

BTW it has been announced that coming soon Premiere will give affiliates the option to air all four hours of the 10/1978-1979 shows.

The 2/22/1975 show originally aired back in 2009 just like this weekend's 2/23/1980 show. Speaking of which... :) February 23, 1980 LW #3: Kenny Rogers "Coward of the County" LW #2: Queen "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" LW #1: The Captain & Tennille "Do That to Me One More Time"40 40 Bonnie Pointer - I Can't Help Myself (40)39 -- Barbra Streisand - Kiss Me in the Rain (37) 38 -- Tommy James - Three Times in Love (19) 37 -- Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (10) 36 31 Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover (11) 35 39 Nicolette Larson - Let Me Go Love (35)34 29 Dionne Warwick - Deja Vu (15) 33 30 Isaac Hayes - Don't Let Go (18) AT40 Archives: From June 1977 - Marvin Gaye "Got to Give it Up", the 202nd #1 of the 70s Flashback Extra: Charlie Dore "Pilot of the Airwaves", which debuted at #74 that week32 38 Ray, Goodman, & Brown - Special Lady (5) 31 37 Chuck Mangione - Give it All You Got (18)30 33 Toto - 99 (26) 29 34 Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker (23) 28 24 Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Pina Colada Song) (1) 27 15 The Eagles - The Long Run (8) 26 12 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Don't Do Me Like That (10)LDD: Donna Summer "I Feel Love" from 16-year-old Jim to the people of his hometown of Cartwright, who pitched in and helped his family to be able to afford the expensive surgery that would help him to recover from the car accident that he had been in last year25 27 The Commodores - Wonderland (25)24 28 Rupert Holmes - Him (6) 23 26 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Refugee (15) AT40 Archives: From July 1977 - Bill Conti "Gonna Fly Now", the 203rd #1 of the 70s Flashback Extra: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band "Fire Lake", which debuted at #65 that week22 25 Barry Manilow - When I Wanted You (20) 21 21 Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain (21)20 23 Linda Ronstadt - How Do I Make You (10) 19 22 Kool & The Gang - Too Hot (5) 18 19 Neil Diamond - September Morn (17) 17 20 Shalamar - The Second Time Around (8) 16 11 Kenny Loggins - This is It (11) 15 18 Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1) (1) 14 16 The Dirt Band - An American Dream (13) 13 17 The Spinners - Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl (2) 12 13 Anne Murray - Daydream Believer (12) 11 14 Steve Forbert - Romeo's Tune (11)AT40 Archives: From July 1977 - Alan O'Day "Undercover Angel", the 204th #1 of the 70s Flashback Extra: The Whispers "And the Beat Goes On", which was "approaching the countdown"10 07 Fleetwood Mac - Sara (7) 09 03 Kenny Rogers - Coward of the County (3) AT40 Extra: The Beatles "Hey Jude"08 10 Andy Gibb - Desire (4) 07 09 Donna Summer - On the Radio (5) 06 08 Dan Fogelberg - Longer (2) 05 05 Michael Jackson - Rock With You (1) 04 04 Smokey Robinson - Cruisin' (4)Flashback Extra: Dr. Hook "Sexy Eyes"03 06 Teri DeSario & KC - Yes, I'm Ready (2) 02 01 The Captain & Tennille - Do That to Me One More Time (1) (also a LDD from Mary in Eugene, Oregon to Steve, her husband of ten years, currently in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they used to live, as she waits for him to finish up his job there so he can join her)01 02 Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love (1)NOTES: - WCRZ elected to play all four extras this week.
- This is the first Casey-hosted show I can recall where the (announced) Biggest Dropper isn't in the first hour. The first of any such show was 3/9/91 (hosted by Shadoe Stevens, heard it a few weeks ago), with Warrant's "I Saw Red" making almost exactly the same move as "Don't Do Me Like That" here this week (they fell one notch more).
- What's notable about "Gonna Fly Now" in this week's Archives is, its sole week at #1 was the week of the 1977 July 4 Special - thus, it didn't get its own show on top.
- Story behind "Hey Jude" as an Extra: The song, the biggest hit the Beatles ever had, was inspired by "Jules", ah, Julian Lennon. John Lennon had separated from Julian's mother at the time (Julian was 5 years old at the time), and when Paul McCartney originally wrote it, it was "Hey Jules". Then, he thought "Jude" made a better name.
- This is the latest I've ever heard a LDD in any show, and as it happens, there's (I believe) only one other show where a LDD was also the #2 song - also hosted by Shadoe Stevens, it was 11/11/89, with the song in question being Roxette's "Listen to Your Heart" (oddly enough, also falling out of #1 that week!).
- #1 Soul: "Special Lady"
- #1 Country: "Years" by Barbara Mandrell
- The #1 Album: The Wall by Pink Floyd

This show featured a piece of the Bunny Waters song "Brandy" which Waters send to AT40 two years earlier hoping his song would be played but his version didn't hit the Top 40. Casey admitted he didn't hold on to "Brandy" himself all this time but statistician Ben Marichal never throws anything away. The B-side of Ringo Starr's single ("Snookeroo") was played. "Sally G" was the B-side of Paul McCartney & Wings' hit "Junior's Farm" #1 Soul: LaBelle - "Lady Marmalade" #1 Country: Tom T. Hall - "I Care" #1 Album: Average White Band - Average White BandAnd here are other things regarding to this week's AT40: The 70's episode regarding to the Feb. 22, 1975 AT40 chart when I listened to it this weekend on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago: * You didn't mention Casey played "I Am Love Part 2" which was the B-side to "I Am Love Part 1" by the Jackson Five regarding the other B-side songs. * BY THE NUMBERS: Besides 3 B-side songs, there were 4 remakes on this Feb. 22, 1975 AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "Shame Shame Shame" by Shirley and Company was written by Sylvia Robinson of Mickey and Sylvia fame? 2) Minnie "Lovin' You" Riperton is from Chicago? 3) Joe Cocker once had a fear of ducking if the audience threw things at him? 4) The group Bad Company sometimes don't wash up for weeks? (P.U.!), 5) There's a Phoebe Snow realted to boxcars and railroads besides the singer? 6) Styx is named after the River Styx in Greek Mythology (which you had to cross to get to Hades!)? 7) Tony Orlando's sister Rhonda had cerebal palsy? 8) Up to the Feb. 22, 1975 AT40 show Carole King's Tapestry album had sold 10 million copies? 9) Linda Rondstat's "You're No Good" was originally done by Betty Everett? * Besides Bunny Walters' "Brandy", Casey also played 4 drop pieces of 4 different Tommy James and the Shondells songs to show their styles of bubblegum music ("Hanky Panky"), psycadelic music ("Crimson and Clover"), protest/social comment ("Sweet Cherry Wine"), and rock ("Mony Mony"). There was also a medley played of the 5 biggest songs done by Neil Sedaka in the late 1960's and early 1970's ("Calendar Girl", "Happy Birthday Sweet 16", "The Diary", "Oh Carol", and a song Neil would hit with a new version one year later in 1976: "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do"). * ALSO: 1) John Lennon was a #9 on the AT40 chart with, what else? "#9 Dream". 2) There were no question letters in this episode. 3) There were scottish bagpipes played in the background as Casey introed the #1 song of this AT40 chart: The Scottish group Average White Band with "Pick Up The Pieces". Well, to conclude: * Is it true that AT40: The 70's stations when they air on certain dates October-December 1978 and 1979 AT40 episodes that are 4 hours in length may air the first hour along the other 3 hours if the station desires? I don't know if WLS 94.7 FM Chicago will do this, but I bet the next 1979 AT40: The 70's episode won't be until late March or early April. * So far this 2012 year we heard AT40 available regular shows from 1977, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1971, 1979, 1973, and 1975. Let's hope next weekend a 1972 show of AT40: The 70's airs so that we could have all years heard so far (But 1970 from the July to December period won't come until later this year).

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE MARCH 4, 1972 AT40 CHART I LISTENED TO THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* Was Casey a little low voice or something like that for that March 4, 1972 week? * BY THE NUMBERS: There were 10 foreign acts and 5 remake songs on this AT40 chart. And Melanie has 2 songs on this AT40 chart: "The Nickel Song" and "Ring the Living Bell". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Donny "Puppy Love" Osmond one was swarmed with lots of phone calls from teen girls after his number was published in a magazine? 2) The Adressi Brothers first hit Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1964 with a #60 song called "Cherry Stone"? 3) The Adressi Brothers - Don and Dick - were also famous for writing theme songs to TV shows (I know only one: "Nanny and the Professor", they sang the theme to it as well!) and commercial jingles and even hit songs? 4) Sly (Sylvester) Stone was once a disc jockey in San Francisco? 5) Three Dog Night was the #1 music act for 1971? 6) "Floy Joy" by the Supremes was written by Smokey Robinson? 7) The Bee Gees were once named BEST AUSTRALIAN GROUP for Australia in 1966? 8) Beverly Bremers was once a cast member of Broadway's "Hair" musical? 9) The Osmonds started as a barbershop quartet at Disneyland before being discovered by Andy Williams? 10) Nillson, who had the #1 song on this AT40 chart with "Without You", is a gifted singer and songwriter? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the songs that went to #1 the fastest: There were 4 that took 2 weeks to get to #1: "Jailhouse Rock", "Purple People Eater", "All Shook Up", and "Can't Buy Me Love". (No song on AT40 ever has entered #1, and think back to late 1991 and 1992 when "Black and White" by Michael Jackson and "I'll Be There" by Mariah Carey took 3 weeks on the chart for #1, and Madonna would have been the fastet to move from #2 to #1 with "Erotica" after entering AT40 at #2 but didn't leave its #2 peek after 2 weeks and then dropped down the AT40 chart without even making it to #1 at all!). * ALSO ON THIS SHOW: 1) At the end of the last hour, Casey mentions the droppers for that week, he was still mentioning the AT40 droppers until he stopped doing it but resumed that practice in December 1983 (So Casey had a 11 year 8 month hiatus from mentioning droppers dropping off on AT40, but Shadoe Stevens' hiatus from mentioning droppers dropping off on AT40 was about 8 months from November 1988 to June 1989!) 2) Nice funny thing Casey mentioned about Carly Simon that she was "born with a silver spoon in her mouth" (Why is that?). 3) Casey even gave a brief thing about the Tyranisourus Rex to tie in with T-Rex's song "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". 4) This AT40 chart had the famous 8 minute Don McLean epic song "American Pie" but AT40 that March 4, 1972 chart episode played an about 4 minute edited version.
Now in 2012 we heard AT40 episodes 1971 to 1979, but a 1970 AT40 chart episode won't come until sometime in Summer or Fall or Late 2012.

(So Casey had a 11 year 8 month hiatus from mentioning droppers dropping off on AT40, but Shadoe Stevens' hiatus from mentioning droppers dropping off on AT40 was about 8 months from November 1988 to June 1989!) I was wondering about this...I've heard a couple Shadoe shows from the first half of '89, but wondering why he didn't read the droppers. Thanks for the info! :) Now...on with the countdown! March 2, 1985 40 -- Jeffrey Osborne - The Borderlines (38) 39 -- Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire (6) 38 -- Animotion - Obsession (6) 37 -- Prince & The Revolution with Apollonia - Take Me With U (25) 36 26 Midnight Star - Operator (18) 35 37 Eric Carmen - I Wanna Hear it From Your Lips (35)34 40 Autograph - Turn Up the Radio (29) 33 -- The Commodores - Nightshift (3) 32 19 Chicago - You're the Inspiration (3)31 25 The Honeydrippers - Rockin' at Midnight (25) 30 35 Bryan Adams - Somebody (11) Flashback Extra: Diana Ross "Missing You", which was "a week away from reaching the countdown"29 22 Steve Perry - Foolish Heart (18) 28 33 Mick Jagger - Just Another Night (12) 27 31 Billy Joel - Keeping the Faith (18) 26 15 Don Henley - The Boys of Summer (5) 25 30 Survivor - High on You (8) 24 27 John Parr - Naughty Naughty (23) 23 29 Duran Duran - Save a Prayer (16) 22 34 Phil Collins - One More Night (1)LDD: Chicago "Stay the Night" from Penny in Cincinatti, OH to her sister Kim in Las Vegas, a song which they both liked very much, and which makes Penny think of her sister, who was there for her after she was able to sign herself out of a drug rehabilitation center; the rest of the family had turned their backs on Penny.21 20 The Time - Jungle Love (20) Flashback Extra: Sade "Smooth Operator", which debuted at #83 that week20 23 Journey - Only the Young (9) 19 21 Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax (10) 18 24 Madonna - Material Girl (2) 17 14 Ashford & Simpson - Solid (12) 16 18 Tina Turner - Private Dancer (7) 15 17 Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes (5) 14 16 Teena Marie - Lovergirl (4) 13 13 Kool & The Gang - Misled (10) 12 12 New Edition - Mr. Telephone Man (12)11 09 Hall & Oates - Method of Modern Love (5) 10 11 John Fogerty - The Old Man Down the Road (10)Flashback Extra: Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)", which was "three weeks away from hitting the countdown"09 10 Sheena Easton - Sugar Walls (9)08 03 Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover (2) 07 05 Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is (1) 06 06 The Pointer Sisters - Neutron Dance (6)05 02 Billy Ocean - Loverboy (2) 04 07 Glenn Frey - The Heat is On (2) LDD: Minnie Riperton "Lovin' You" from Cindy in Woodbridge, VA to her husband Russ, who is currently serving in the Air Force and who she loves very much03 08 David Lee Roth - California Girls (3)Flashback Extra: Murray Head "One Night in Bangkok"02 04 REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling (1) 01 01 Wham! - Careless Whisper (1)Five songs debut in this week's survey, and the five hits that fall out are: "Tragedy" by John Hunter (LW: 39), "Tenderness" by General Public (LW: 38), "Ooh Ooh Song" by Pat Benatar (LW: 36), "I Would Die 4 U" by Prince & The Revolution (LW: 32), and "Like a Virgin" by Madonna (LW: 28). NOTES: - WWIS cut out abruptly right after Larry Morgan's intro to the third Premiere extra; the weather (local weather was talking about a Winter Storm Warning for areas such as Milwaukee) may have had something to do with it. WCRZ, on the other hand, played all four extras once again, and finished at 11:53.
- After #38, Casey answered a question letter asking what the top three British solo singers were on the American charts. In second place was Olivia Newton-John, who despite growing up in Australia as Casey mentioned, would be completely left off the listing of the top five Australian acts only two months later (5-11) despite otherwise having the hits to qualify.
- Speaking of that 5-11 show, the theme package was once again in a state of "transition" this week, with both 1984-prominent and 1986-prominent bumpers heard.
- The edit job done on "Save a Prayer" has to be one of the most obvious cut jobs I've heard for any of these shows.
- Another example of a #1 Soul song doubling as a Premiere extra this week (see also 10-25-86). AND another example of a #1 song being shortened (why do you do this, Premiere? ).
- Larry Morgan pointed out that there were two versions of "One Night in Bangkok" on the Hot 100 this week in his intro to Murray Head's (hit) version.
- #1 on the Album chart: Make it Big by Wham!
- #1 on the Country chart: "Baby Bye Bye" by Gary Morris
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "This is My Night" by Chaka Khan
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Missing You"

I was wondering about this...I've heard a couple Shadoe shows from the first half of '89, but wondering why he didn't read the droppers. Thanks for the info! :) There's also a week in late September or early October 1989 when, for whatever reason, he doesn't read the droppers either. There was a brief period in late 2000-early 2001 when Casey wasn't announcing the droppers, but late returned to that practice. The only time I recall Rick Dees ever saying them was in the spring of 1997 when. He said all of them went to chart heaven except for "My Boo." Ellen K. was pretty good about saying them on "The Rhythm Countdown." Occasionally, Ryan Seacrest will mention just one of the droppers when he's introing another song by the same artist.

NOTES: - Joining the four-in-a-row club is "Need You Tonight" (11/21 and 12/26/87, and last month's 2/6) - like "Separate Lives", this includes both its first and last weeks in The 40.
- Technically, so does "Don't Shed a Tear", but that was an extra on 11/21. Come to think of it, that seems to be the new popular song to shorten, as it's happened on all of the four except for 2/6 (though the edit on 12/26 was original).
- They played the 7" single version of "Some Kind of Lover" this week.
- DEJA..."PHEW": That story of The Raspberries' scratch-n-sniff album should sound familiar...why yes, Casey told it in last week's '85 show, too!
- In his intro to "Pink Cadillac", Larry Morgan mentioned that we'd heard Bruce Springsteen earlier as an extra. That's the first I've heard him mention someone else who had a different Premiere extra within the same show.
- It's another week with no softer jingle. Like 10/12/85, there wasn't really any jingled song where it would've fit all that well.
- #1 on the Album chart: Dirty Dancing
- #1 on the Country chart: "Too Gone, Too Long" by Randy Travis
- #1 on the Dance chart: "I Want to Be Your Property" by Blue Mercedes
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Fishnet" by Morris Day

Sorry I was away this weekend in a state/area where I can't get AT40: The 70's, but I will be back in the WLS 94.7 Chicago area for next weekend. But for the March 1977 AT40: The 70's broadcast I didn't listen to though I was out of town with iPad access: It isn't the first time AT40 had chart errors for 3 positions, in a July 1989 Shadoe Stevens AT40 episode 2 chart positions were switched around in error that Shadoe corrected the next week.

I bet Premiere on AT40: The '70's censored the B word in Hall and Oates "Rich Girl".

As far as I know, this will be the first time that AT40 70s or 80s has played a hit sung by Martha Wash.

As far as I know, this will be the first time that AT40 70s or 80s has played a hit sung by Martha Wash. However, during the Shadoe Stevens AT40 era at the period of 1989 to 1991 we heard Martha Wash as an uncredited guest lead singer on AT40 chart songs by Seduction, Black Box, and C and C Music Factory.

As far as I know, this will be the first time that AT40 70s or 80s has played a hit sung by Martha Wash. "It's Raining Men" was also an extra when Premiere aired 1/15/83, back in 2009.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE MARCH 16, 1974 AT40 EPISODE THAT I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* NEW AT40 SPONSOR THIS WEEK: Lincoln Financial (Does Premiere have to sponsor its shows with insurance companines, even State Farm?) * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 2 initial songs on this AT40 chart - "W.O.L.D." by Harry Chapin, and "T.S.O.P." by MFSB (Speaking of "T.S.O.P.", did you know Premiere severly edited this instrumental cuting out the good bridge part or something like that? YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO A THEME USED IN THE TV SHOW "SOUL TRAIN" EVEN WHEN "SOUL TRAIN" HOST AND CREATOR DON CORNELIOUS DIED LAST MONTH!); and there are 3 country crossover records on this AT40 chart, including 2 by Charlie Rich! * OTHER BLOOPERS?: Casey called the subtitle of Aretha Franklin's "Until You Come Back to Me" as "That's Sort Of What To Do" instead of "That's What I'm Gonna Do". And Casey called John Denver's song "Sunshine on My Shoulders" as "Sunshine on My Shoulder". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The movie "The Last American Hero" was reissued to include as the title of Jim Croce's song "I Got a Name"? 2) Johnnie Taylor in 1974 was living in Dallas, Texas? 3) Ringo Starr's first post Beatles solo hit was a chart flop? 4) Aretha Franklin from 1961 to 1974 has racked up 46 top 40 hits? 5) "Sexy Mama" by the Moments was originally to have been recorded by Sylvia Robinson as "Sexy Daddy"? 6) Barbra Striesand was one rejected by a record company because she was singing through her nose? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding how a song is certified gold and platinum - A record to become gold status has to sell 1,000,000 copies or $1,000,000 in record sales; and - though it wouldn't occur until 1976 - it has to be platinum to reach 2,000,000 copies (Other tidbits about this: 1) Motown Records originally didn't want to have its records gold status, but did they in later years? 2) By the 1980's the gold record status was reduced from 1,000,000 copies to 500,000 copies with 1,000,000 copies to make platinum record status. 3) I wonder if they still allow gold and platinum record status nowadays for the digital age of downloads and iTunes?) 2) Regarding the most Top 40 versions of any song by different artist - The Banana Boat Song with 5-6 different artist top 40 versions including the famous version by Harry Belefonte ("Daylight come and me wanna go home!"). 3) Regarding the first foreign act ever to hit #1 with a rock 'n roll song - The Canadian doo-wop group The Crew-Cuts in 1954 with "Sh-Boom". * OTHER THINGS: 1) There were a few plugs for an upcoming April 1974 AT40 special on the Top 40 most extrodinary British Hits kept intact. 2) There was 1 song on the AT40 chart that was also heard in a snippet featured in the #35 "Energy Crisis 1974" break-in record by Dickie Goodman - "You're Sixteen" by Ringo Starr right next door at #34! 3) Is it true Casey Kasem likes the lyrics of Harry Chapin's songs? 4) Did you know part of Casey's famous "Keep your feet on the ground" phrase heard at the end of almost every AT40 episode is heard in the Stealer's Wheel song "Star"?

- Larry Morgan mentioned that "Should I Stay or Should I Go" was first released in 1982...as noted by the song being an extra last year as well, the song had two chart runs, never hitting the Top 40 either time.
- Here's an interesting chart fact: Five songs in this week's top 20 all originally debuted on the Hot 100 right in the 40: "All Right", "Mr. Roboto", "Separate Ways", "We've Got Tonight", and "Shame on the Moon". And as you can see above, all five of them failed to hit #1! (Though in the case of the last one, it certainly wasn't from lack of trying. ;)) Technically this stat's also true the week before (3/12, aired in 2010), but unlike that week, this week also sees three of the five peaking and a fourth about to!
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Wouldn't Change You if I Could" by Ricky Skaggs
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Billie Jean"
