Casey called John Denver's song "Sunshine on My Shoulders" as "Sunshine on My Shoulder". That was Billboard's fault. Through its entire run on the Hot 100, Billboard listed the song as "Sunshine On My Shoulder."

(LW: 27), and "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora (LW: 25). NOTES: - This Week's Stations of the Week: WWIS and WIDL.
- "Overjoyed" received a standard jingle this week, but two weeks later (4-5) it would receive a soft one.
- Speaking of which, it seems a bit redundant to say "I Can't Wait" was two weeks away from hitting the countdown, since we heard that show just last year. But maybe it's just me...
- Speaking of that week yet again, take a look at this week's chart. Of the five songs that would drop from the countdown two weeks from now, only one of them, "Silent Running", isn't peaking this week - that one's already falling. To find the other four...start with "(How to Be A) Millionaire)" and work your way down to #40; all the peaking songs you run into along the way are the ones soon headed for that Fast Train to Nowhere...Fast! ;)
- Casey read WWMH as a station joining the American Top 40 family this week. But, he read that same station as joining the family on the last 1986 show we heard, 1-25. What's up with that?
- Add "That's What Friends Are For" to that ever-growing list of songs that were LDDs in the week they dropped from the 40, the fourth one now since the 5-11-85 show last year. Like that week, Casey didn't say the song was dropping in his outro.
- Another week with a Top 5 Albums countdown: #5 - Welcome to the Real World by Mr. Mister, #4 - Scarecrow by John Cougar Mellencamp, #3 - Heart, #2 - Promise by Sade, and #1...up next.
- #1 on the Country chart: "What's a Memory Like You Doing in a Love Like This?" by John Schneider
- #1 on the Soul chart: "What Have You Done For Me Lately?"
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney Houston

Libra: Do you think the WWMH double mention as new to AT40 in March 1986 besides January 1986 might have been a mistake or maybe WWMH carried AT40 for a few weeks but then dropped it and caused protest and reinstated the show by the end of March 1986?
I think WWMH was based in Wisconsin.

It was. I have no idea why there'd have been a double mention like that.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S REBROADCAST OF THE MARCH 31, 1973 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jud "Daisy a Day" Strunk was a regular on "Laugh-In" at the 1973 time? 2) The Chi-Lites come from Chicago? 3) Jim Croce once failed basic training in the army, and even wrote funny slogans such as "Half the people read comic books, the other half just look at the pictures"? 4) "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel was produced by Liebler and Stroller? 5) Judy Collins had polio at 12 years old and later once sufferedd terbulocious during a Carnagie Hall concert? 6) "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed was produced by David Bowie? 7) The group Gallery was from Detroit, Michigan? 8) Johnny Nash once sang on the KPRC Houston, Texas local show "Matinee"? 9) Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" was re-recorded for the BBC radio stations in London as "The Cover of the Radio Times"? 10) Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show did get on the cover of Rolling Stone but as a caricature drawing instead of a photo? 11) Vicki Lawrence once wrote a fan letter to Carol Burnett that she resembled her (and which earned Vicki a spot as a regular on the Carol Burnett Show)? 12) Deodoto was once mad about recording "Also Sprach Zaraphustra"? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the time when 2 instrumentals were in the Top 5 at the same time besides 1973: The Top 3 sometime on a week 1961 were instrumentals... 1) "Wonderland by Night" by Bert Kamphert 2) "Exodus" by Ferrante and Teicher 3) "Calcutta" by Lawrence Welk and 2) Regarding songs hitting #1, then falling to #2, and then back to #1 again - It happened the most recent time on this AT40 episode! "Killing Me Softly With His Song" by Roberta Flack was #1 for 4 weeks, then dropped to #1 for "Love Train" by the O' Jays, and on this AT40 chart went back to #1 again. * OTHER THINGS: 1) There were a number of plugs for the upcoming April 7, 1973 AT40 special regarding the Top 40 hits of the past 5 years - all #1 songs - from 1967-1972. 2) Casey played a drop piece of the original "The Twelth of Never" by Johnny Mathis which reached #51 in 1958 to tie in with the Donny Osmond remake (oddly, Donny Osmond was born in 1958, the same year the original Johnny Mathis song came out!) 3) Notice Casey mentioning the Tony Orlando and Dawn song on the AT40 chart as "Tie a Ribbon - A Yellow Ribbon - Round The Old Oak Tree"? 4) And regarding the AT40 PREDICTING THE #1 SONG SEGMENT: The previous week on March 24, 1974 Casey and the AT40 staff predicted "Love Train" would remain at #1 but didn't. And for the next week (which wouldn't matter since that next week the AT40 Top 40 songs of the past 5 years special aired) the prediction of the next week #1 song would be "Neither One Of Us" by Gladys Knight and the Pips (Well, Casey and the AT40 guys were wrong again since moving into the April 7, 1973 Billboard chart at #1 was "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence, "Neither One of Us" had to settle for the #2 spot.)
I wonder what Premiere is planning for next weekend on AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's whether it is regarding April Foolishness or not (since next weekend is April Fool's Day weekend and April Fool's Day - April 1, 2012 - falls on a Sunday), but would AT40: The 70's/AT40: The 80's stations do something in place of the shows, like maybe an out of place AT40 show? (I know from some former R&R message board poster that on April 1, 2001 Boston's Kiss 108 FM aired instead of that weekend's American Top 40 current show a rerun of a July 10, 1999 AT40 episode with Kiss 108's Ed McMann - gee, whatever happened to him? At least he's no Larry Morgan! - guest hosting for Casey on that episode.)

Hopefully next weekend I will be back to listening to AT40: The 70's on my local station WLS 94.7 FM, but rumor as it according to the AT40 Fun and Games forums that the next AT40: The 70's episode might be a show that has been played 3 times before since Premiere launched the AT40: The 70's format in 2007.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S BROADCAST OF THE APRIL 8, 1978 CHART AIRED THIS WEEKEND ON AT40: THE 70'S ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO (Though it was the fourth time for Premiere in AT40: The 70's history for this episode, this is the first time WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played this):
* The previous week on April 1, 1978 there was an AT40 special on the Top 40 movie hits of all time. *DID YOU KNOW: 1) KC of KC and the Sunshine Band spent 5 years doing sanitation work and unpacking records before he got his music career? 2) The group Rubicon features former Sly and the Family Stone member Jerry Martini? 3) "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis was at the 1978 time the slowest rising song to reach the top 10 on Billboard (I wonder, did Vangellis' "Chariots of Fire" and/or Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" both in 1982 break this record?)? 4) Chuck Mangione's father Frank helped out with jazz musicians by serving Italian spaghetti dinners? 5) George Clinton's 11 man group went under 2 different names - Parliment and Funkadelic - under 2 different recording contracts? 6) Ray Parker (Jr.) was dropped from doing backup guitar from Stevie Wonder because of jealousy? 7) Eric Clapton's big ambition was planning to do stained glass art that never got off the ground? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the most #1's for a female solo singer: At the 1978 time - Diana Ross (Later to be broken by Madonna and then Mariah Carey in later years). * BLOOPERS DEPT.: Casey mentioned the highest debut at the #17 - "With a Little Luck" by Wings - as (besides the highest entry by a former Beatle in the Top 40 since "Imagine" by John Lennon in 1971) the highest top 40 entry in the 1970's! WRONG! The highest top 40 entry in the 1970's went to "Theme From Shaft" by Issac Hayes in 1971 entering the top 40 at #9 (by the way, the highest entry in AT40 history in the 1980's was "Upside Down" by Diana Ross in August 1980 entering the top 40 at #10, and the highest entry in AT40 history in the 1990's - during the 6 and a 1/2 year Shadoe Stevens era and during the 1 year 1992 Billboard Top 40 Radio Monitor source era, of course - was "Erotica" by Madonna entering the top 40/AT40 at #2 just 5 months after "I'll Be There" by Mariah Carey entered the top 40/AT40 at #4). * ALSO: 1) I liked the fun way Casey called Eddie Money after his debut song "Baby Hold On" was played at #40 as "Mr. Money". 2) The Top 2 songs on this AT40 chart were both by the Bee Gees - "Stayin' Alive" at #2 and "Night Fever" at #1. 3) One of the songs on this AT40 chart: "Thank You For Being a Friend" by Andrew Gold, which not only would later be the theme Betty White's classic sitcom "The Golden Girls", but when Casey Kasem retired from the Top 40 biz with just the scaled down AC American Top 10 and Hot AC American Top 20 at the helm (Ryan Seacrest was handing the current AT40 chores) by closing his final shows in June 2009, this song was used as a special farewell Long Distance Dedicqation to his fans (much in the matter of when Shadoe Stevens used for a farewell LDD to his fans when the old AT40 ended only in foreign markets in January 1995 James Brown's "So Tired of Standing Still, We Got to Move On"). 4) WLS 94.7 FM did play one of the AT40: The 70's optional extras this week: Optional Extra #1 of "More Than a Woman" by the BEE GEES - BELATED APRIL FOOL!!! Really, the version of "More Than a Woman" was by Tavares (Don't think AT40 nor AT20 nor AT10 ever played the Bee Gees "More Than a Woman" unless it was a drop piece on the old AT40 at the 1978 time).
Well, AT40 and Casey Kasem fans, hope your Easter Sunday went well. But rumor has it the first AT40: The 70's usage of a 1979 AT40 episode in 4 hour format with the first hour optional won't be ready and waiting until probably the weekend of April 28-29, 2012 (Will WLS 94.7 FM Chicago play the full 4 hours or just the second, third and fourth hours when 1979 comes up on AT40: The 70's? Stay tuned in the weeks to come...)

The Bee Gees' version of "More Than A Woman" was played as an optional extra last year when Premiere aired the 5/27/1978 show.

Despite this, he has brought excitement in her life. They are engaged to be married in the summer. Four songs debut in this week's survey, so four songs dropped out. They were: "New Moon On Monday" by Duran Duran (LW: #18) "Let's Stay Together" by Tina Turner (LW: #31) "Nobody Told Me" by John Lennon (LW: #33) and "New Song" by Howard Jones (#27)
* = 1984 peak; 1988 peak was #1 - The extra story behind "Start Me Up" had to do with the Rolling Stones recently coming out with their very own telephone featuring Mick Jagger's lips and tongue. - Originally Casey opened Hour #3 by announcing Dr. Pepper as the show's sponsor. Casey has plugged Dr. Pepper a lot during the mid-'80s but normally Premiere has edited those plugs out. Not this time. - The German-speaking version of "99 Luftballoons" was played. When it was an optional extra for the 1/14/1984 show, the English-speaking version was played. - For the first LDD, the album version of "Just The Way You Are" was played. - Coincidentally, the second LDD followed an uptempo Pointer Sisters song although the LDD song itself was uptempo which would not be the case for another LDD following an uptempo Pointer Sisters song nearly a year and a half later (9/14/1985). - "Thriller" would mark the last week of Michael Jackson's streak of consecutive weeks in the Top 40 at 74 although unofficially if you count "Somebody's Watching Me" (in which Michael provided background vocals), then his streak lasted 79 weeks. #1 Soul: "She's Strange" by Cameo #1 Album: "Thriller" #1 Country: "Don't Make It Easy For Me" by Earl Thomas Conley

ALSO: Besides "With a Little Luck" by Wings entering the Top 40 at #17 that April 8, 1978 week, the 2 other songs to enter the Top 40 reaches in that #17 position was Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in Spring 1972 and "Old Days" by Chicago in May 1975.

Just this weekend in this case. BTW two weeks from now will be the first four-hour episode of "AT40: The '70s" (from April 28, 1979).

Well, technically the first four-hour regular countdown (if anybody remembers the 1979 Disco Special airing in 2008).

NOTES: - This Week's Station of the Week: WIDL. Good thing, that - after nearly a year of not doing so, WCRZ screwed up again, and this time they really pulled a doozy! Not only did they play the two middle segments from last week's show (#6 & "Fame" LDD, then #5) instead of the one middle segment from this week's (#7 & #6), but after playing the final extra (only missing the second one, BTW), "Wonderful Tonight" played. Way to screw over the Queen of Soul in her achievement in returning to the top (see below), guys! >:(
- You know how sometimes there's been a LDD where the lyrics of the song make it...a questionable choice for the dedication itself? Well, the writer of the first LDD admits that she's not sure of all the lyrics to the song ("Cool Change"). In this case, though, I'd say it works just fine for the dedication. :)
- Interesting that "The Final Countdown" received the softer jingle this week. So did "(I Just) Died in Your Arms", another song with a rock flavor.
- Also interesting was the question letter that also served as a lead-in to #26 - it asked about women who'd spent a year (in consecutive weeks) in the Top 40. One of the two artists currently in the countdown had pulled this off - in fact, Janet, at #26 with "Let's Wait Awhile", was on a current run. Having said that, a month ago back on 3-22-86 featured her first week in with the debut of "What Have You Done For Me Lately?", and this week sees the last, as "Let's Wait Awhile" would drop out the following week. (Her next single, "The Pleasure Principle", wouldn't debut until June.)
- Story behind "Band on the Run" as an Extra: Paul McCartney is left-handed, and wasn't sure he'd be able to aspire to play guitar like he wanted, since most conventional guitars at that time were right-handed. That is...until he saw Slim Whitman playing. Slim is a left-handed guitar player, and seeing Slim inspired Paul to make a go of it - by turning it around, and playing it upside down! "Band on the Run" debuted on the charts 13 years ago, this week.
- Larry Morgan noted that "You Can Call Me Al" was in its second run up the Hot 100.
- Most of us listening have probably noticed how many of the chart records that Casey has mentioned from time to time in these shows have since been broken, most of them well after the classic AT40 time periods. Well, this week sees Casey get the chance to update one of his own chart answers - back on 10-25-86, Casey answered a listener question asking what act had had the longest time gap between #1 songs. In his intro for the new #1 song this week, he references the previous figure - 19 years and 10 months for Frank Sinatra, between "Five Minutes More" and "Strangers in the Night". By hitting #1, Aretha broke that record, by a mere 2 weeks - and following the drumroll, Casey simply says "Aretha, I knew you were waiting! Congratulations!" Now granted, Cher would later break that record - and then some! - in 1999 with "Believe" (though only strictly on the Hot 100), but this week is still a rare example of Casey giving a chart record and then later being able to give an update when the previous one was broken.
- Come to think of it, Casey says right in the opening that a chart record was broken involving the longest gap between #1 songs, in the process giving away that there's a new #1 this week, something probably not done since the 70s (where he'd simply say there's a new #1 on some weeks).
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Lean on Me"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Sign O' the Times"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Kids of the Baby Boom" by The Bellamy Brothers
- #1 on the Album chart: Licensed to Ill by The Beastie Boys
