HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE APRIL 10, 1971 AT40 CHART THAT I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* This April 10, 1971 chart was aired the weekend of April 3, 1971 - 1 month before AT40 would start matching each weekend with the Billboard chart date after doing its first AT40 special. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Glen Campbell's first hit in 1961 called "Turn Around, Look at Me" was a regional hit? 2) "What is Life" by George Harrison was co-produced by Phil Spector? 3) Andy Williams' first hit in 1956 was "Canadian Sunset"? 4) For Brewer and Shipley's "One Toke Over The Line" the word "toke" is short for token - meaning a regret for going to far? 5) The biggest Motown single ever prior to 1971 was Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (later to be broken in the 1990's by 2 Boyz II Men songs - "End of the Road" and "I'll Make Love To You")? * "Never Can Say Goodbye" entered the AT40 chart at #15 (but later in the year Issac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" entered AT40 at #9). * Glad one of the AT40 extras "My Way" by Frank Sinatra was kept intact in the show (Casey mentioned that at that 1971 time Frank's newest album which would be his 100th. album would be his last as Frank Sinatra would start his retirement, although Frank did make a comeback in 1980 when "New York, New York" made the Top 40 and even made periodic albums and CD's in the 1980's and 1990's before Frank passed away in 1998), although the 4 other AT40 extras were demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status, but get this... * WLS 94.7 FM did play at the end of the 2nd AT40 hour the OPTIONAL EXTRA of not 1, but 2 AT40 extras! "Just a Dream" by Jimmy Clanton and then the biggest rock 'n roll instrumental of all time - "Honky Tonk" by Bill Doggett (complete with original Casey Kasem voice and not Larry Morgan's voice!). Odd to see 2 classic AT40 extras into 1 OPTIONAL EXTRA. * ALSO: 1) I like Casey calling Cat Stevens "a CAT from England" (although he's a human named Cat rather than an animal cat). 2) Kept intact in the show and aired 3 times is an Osmonds Family Portrait giant 3 foot poster mail in offer (Once even before the #35 Osmonds song "One Bad Apple" was played!), to send for the Osmonds poster you'd send your name, address, zip code, plus $2 to the AT40 address in Los Angeles, CA (was this the first AT40 address to send Question Letters before AT40 had first a Universal City, CA address and then a Hollywood, CA address?). Even the Osmonds sang at the end of the Osmond poster offer ad the "American Top 40" jingle. - Speaking of the AT40 Osmond poster: Has it ever existed in e-bay auctions?

Edit: PO Box 69440/LA 90069 was also used by the newspaper feature 'Dear Abby.'
"Cat" was a hipster term for "guy." Its use dates back well into Casey's childhood.
Yet to find that poster on the 'bay.

Apparently the Dear Abby column was based in L.A. by 1971 as looking through 1970 editions of the St. Petersburg Evening Independent confirm. On the 1/3/1970 edition, the address though was P.O. OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE APRIL 19, 1975 AT40 BROADCAST THAT I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO: * BY THE NUMBERS: 10 songs are by British acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Major Harris was a former member of the Delfonics? 2) Casey called "Harry Truman" by Chicago sort of a novelty record (I guess?), 3) "Beer Barrel Polka" was first done in 1939? 4) The B-side of Bobby Vinton's "Beer Barrel Polka" is called "Dick and Jane"? 5) Olivia Newton-John isn't really a country singer? 6) The group Pure Prairie League comes from Kentucky? 7) John Denver had other jobs like a tractor driver and a logging camp member before taking on a singing job? 8) Jimmy Castor was once a stand in for Frankie Lymon on his tours? 9) The Ozark Mountain Daredevils come from Springfield, Missouri (and no, it isn't the same Springfield town the cartoon Simpsons family live!)? 10) Leo Sayer was once worried that a band would beat him up if he performed on stage? 11) The B-side of Ringo Starr's "No No Song" is called "Snookeroo"? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the song that charted the longest without hitting #1: Johnny Mathis with his #17 song "Wonderful Wonderful" that charted for 39 weeks. * DROP PIECES PLAYED BY CASEY ON THIS EPISODE: 1) A drop piece of the original "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King was played to tie in to the 1975 John Lennon remake, 2) A drop piece of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" was played to tie into a stretch story about the biggest suicide song and the 1967 death of the hungarian composer who wrote this song (and to tie in with the 1975 suicide song by Hot Chocoalte called "Emma" a/k/a "Emmaline" (not "Emily"). Well, I hope to find out next weekend if WLS 94.7 FM Chicago plays the full 4 hours of next weekend's AT40: The 70's 4 hour April 28, 1979 AT40 episode or just starts with the second hour and not play the first optional hour...

9) The Ozard Mountain Daredevils come from Springfield, Missouri (and no, it isn't the same Springfield town the cartoon Simpsons family live!)? Actually, in one FOX airing of "The Simpsons: Behind The Laughter", it was mentioned that they did live in Missouri (well, it was the second airing; the initial airing had them living in Kentucky). :)

Actually, this week might be more noteworthy, since of the debuts, only "Run For the Roses" would get there.
- Story behind "We Are Family" as an Extra: The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates adopted the song as their theme song, intended to bring the team closer together. The Pirates would go on to win the World Series that year after a 7-game stretch against the Baltimore Orioles.
- The hour-ending theme in this show was a piano-driven clip, a short-lived piece that accompanied the switch to the 1982-83 theme package. The alternating hour-opening theme (used in hours two and four) was also initially short-lived, but would come back later for '83. There isn't a second set of jingles mixed in, though - they're all still the same one set that had been in place since the late 70s.
- After last week's epic screw-up, WCRZ rebounded this week by getting through the show correctly this week, complete with playing all four extras - although, they went to regular programming with the end theme still playing to finish in the background. In spite of going some weeks without extras, overall so far this year they've been playing extras more often than not, which is out of their usual norm.
- Of the holding songs, the only ones spending more than their 2nd week at their position this week are those holding in the Top 5. Of those, the only one not spending its third week is the #1 song - spending its 6th week up there.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Crying My Heart Out Over You" by Ricky Skaggs
- #1 on the Soul chart: "If it Ain't One Thing, It's Another" by Richard "Dimples" Fields
- #1 on the Album chart: The Chariots of Fire soundtrack by Vangelis

9) The Ozard Mountain Daredevils come from Springfield, Missouri (and no, it isn't the same Springfield town the cartoon Simpsons family live!)? Actually, in one FOX airing of "The Simpsons: Behind The Laughter", it was mentioned that they did live in Missouri (well, it was the second airing; the initial airing had them living in Kentucky). :) The Simpsons family really live in Springfield, OREGON!

With this "just in" possibility, I hope this Sunday on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago either: a) The first 4 hour April 28, 1979 AT40: The 70's episodes air either in full 4 hour format or running the last 3 hours starting with the second hour and not playing the optional first hour. b) The March 25, 1972 AT40 episode where Dick Clark guest hosts for Casey Kasem as a tribute to the late Dick Clark. Stay tuned for further developments as the weekend comes and Sunday comes...

I e-mailed the program director in regards to what will be airing on Sunday, but he still hasn't gotten back to me.
I just hope I can find a station that will be airing the 1979 show whose live stream works on my computer.

Here's part Two of my "AT40" preview.
This weekend on "AT40: The '70s" preview, there are two shows being offered. I'll start with the one looking to get played the most.
The first show is from 3/25/1972. This is being played in tribute to guest host Dick Clark, who passed away last week. This is the first time Premiere has offered a classic episode of "AT40" without Casey Kasem.
Six songs debuted this week: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - Roberta Flack (#17) "Day Dreaming" - Aretha Franklin (#32) "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#37) "The Day I Found Myself" - Honey Cone (#38) "Could It Be Forever" - David Cassidy (#39) "Do Your Thing" - Isaac Hayes (#40)
Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Let's Stay Together" - Al Green (#22) "Talking Loud And Saying Nothing (Part 1)" - James Brown (#27) "Ring The Living Bell" - Melanie (#31) "My World" - The Bee Gees (#32) "Softly Whispering I Love You" - The English Congregation (#34) "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" - Donnie Elbert (#38)
Biggest Mover: "Rockin' Robin" - Michael Jackson (#33 to #14) Biggest Dropper: "Sweet Seasons" - Carole King (#16 to #29)
Original extras: "Me And Bobby McGee" - Janis Joplin This will be included in the original broadcast and not as an optional extra.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Tiny Dancer" - Elton John (#47) Hour #2: "Doctor My Eyes" - Jackson Browne (#61) Hour #3: "Vincent" - Don McLean (#53)
The broadcast that was originally slated to air everywhere (it will still air on a few affiliates) will be from 4/28/1979. This is the first regular four-hour countdown offered by Premiere (however, only WDOC in Columbus OH looks to be the best bet to catch all four hours):
Six songs debuted in the Top 40 this week: "Hot Stuff" - Donna Summer (#29) "Hot Number" - Foxy (#35) "The Logical Song" - Supertramp (#36) "Such A Tycoon" - Tycoon (#38) "Don't Write Her Off" - McGuinn, Clark & Hillman (#39) "Get Used To It" - Roger Voudouris (#40)
Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Shake Your Groove Thing" - Peaches & Herb (#24) "Superman" - Herbie Mann (#26) "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - Rod Stewart (#27) "Heaven Knows" - Donna Summer with Brooklyn Dreams (#30) "What You Won't Do For Love" - Bobby Caldwell (#31) "I Don't Know If It's Right" - Evelyn "Champagne" King (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Love You Inside Out" - The Bee Gees (#37 to #23) Biggest Dropper: "I Just Fall In Love Again" - Anne Murray (#19 to #33)
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Ready To Take A Chance Again" - Barry Manilow "Think It Over" - Cheryl Ladd (just like "Stairway To Heaven": yes, really though the LDD is an interesting one nonetheless)
Archive extras: "Midnight Train To Georgia" - Gladys Knight & The Pips "Keep On Truckin'" - Eddie Kendricks "Photograph" - Ringo Starr The Eddie Kendricks song will be an optional extra. The other two extras remain.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Makin' It" - David Naughton (#56) Hour #2: "Dance The Night Away" - Van Halen (#68; debuted) Hour #3: "Old Time Rock 'n Roll" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (#41) Hour #4: "Keep On Truckin'" - Eddie Kendricks (original AT40 Archive extra)

Worth noting is that the story behind the (original) extra in the 1980 show also has a connection to Dick Clark. More details to come later in show posting. :)

While I wait, speaking of dual AT40 broadcasts, I remember for the old AT40 on weekends they had regular AT40 broadcasts and special AT40 broadcasts when the old AT40 aired on WYTZ 94.7 FM Chicago (Z-95): * July 5, 1987 - On the second weekend of WYTZ airing AT40 after acquiring it from sister station WLS 890 AM, the regular July 4, 1987 AT40 aired followed by the 4 hour AT40 "Top 40 Hits of the 1980's So Far" special countdown. * May 28, 1989 - Before the regular Shadoe Stevens AT40 episode for May 27, 1989, WYTZ aired the 4 hour Shadoe Stevens AT40 World Tour special. * July 6, 1991 - Instead of airing the regular Shadoe Stevens AT40 show, WYTZ aired the 4 hour AT40 post Gulf War All American countdown (and this was 3 and 3/4 months before the station dropped AT40 for good at the time WYTZ was switching from Top 40 to simucast Talkradio WLS 890 AM).

A good thing, that, seeing as I'm looking to have a busy listening weekend ahead. Can't yet vouch for posting, though.
- Larry Morgan noted that it would be 9 years until the B-52s's first Top 40 hit in his intro for "Rock Lobster".
- "Stairway to Heaven" had all 8 minutes played, though probably due to its length, they started playing it quite early in the background while Casey was reading the letter.
- Larry Morgan stated that many stations chose to play the B-side of "Coming Up", which was credited to Paul McCartney & Wings. While true, Billboard at the time gave a solo credit to Paul, and so have I.
- Story behind "At the Hop" as an Extra: This actually doubles as a Question Letter, asking what the highest position a new artist ever debuted on the chart was. The answer position is #23, and the story: Back in 1957, a group wrote a new song called "Do the Bop", based on the bop, a dance popularized on American Bandstand. The record wasn't taking off, however...until host Dick Clark suggested re-writing it, with a new title. They sold it to ABC Records...and the result: A #1 smash!
- #1 on the Country chart: "A Lesson in Leaving" by Dottie West
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Don't Say Goodnight" by The Isley Brothers
- #1 on the Album chart: The Wall by Pink Floyd

Open a 1980 edition of Billboard magazine and view the Hot 100 you see listings for Coming Up (Live At Glasgow) by Paul McCartney & The Wings.
It is true this was the B side to the intended A single solo version by Paul McCartney but the version that became a hit was credited to Paul McCartney & The Wings

WLS 94.7 FM Chicago didn't play the Dick Clark March 1972 guest hosted AT40 episode, but instead played the April 28, 1979 episode but not the optional first hour of it, more details to come...

Guess it wouldn't run 4 hours of 1979 shows (or even late 1978 shows). * DID YOU KNOW: 1) 2 members of the Allman Brothers Band had 2 members die in motorcycle crashes? Also: Greg Allman temporary had drug causes. 2) Randy Vanwarmer is from Denver, Colorado? 3) The Styx song "Renegade" might have been inspired by a Rod Stewart impersonator? 4) The group Orleans is one of the few artists signed to the short lived Infinity label? The others included Hot Chocolate and Dobie Gray (Add one more to the list later in 1979: Rupert Holmes, who hit #1 at the end of 1979 with "Escape: The Pina Colada Song"), 5) The Bee Gees once made the cover of Fortune magazine (a business magazine, even Casey Kasem noticed it!)? 6) Paul MacCartney signed the biggest record/music contract deal with Columbia records in 1979 (but it would be broken with contract deals made by Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey in later years)? 7) Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer" was inspired by a stuffed animal called "Woodsue"? 8) Herb of Peaches and Herb was once a cop and once worked for the U.S. Mint? 9) The American group Blondie was first noticed in Europe before hitting big on the American charts? * QUESTION LETTER ADDITION: Regarding someone besides Lewis finding another time when 3 artists with the same last name occupied the Top 40 charts at the same time besides LEWIS in 1965: It was SIMON in 1972 - Carly, Joe, and Paul. * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece from a 1969 album called "Switched on Bach" to tie in with a report on the whereabouts of Walter Carlos, what had happened to Walter Carlos was that in 1972 he went a sex change and became a woman named Wendy Carlos! 2) Casey mentioned KAVR in Apple Valley, California was celebrating its 25th. year as a radio station (in 1979, that is!), 3) A funny message from Casey: "When does 4 = 1? When it's Sister Sledge!" 4) I'm glad the AT40 Archive song of "Photograph" by Ringo Starr was intact in the show but the Archive song of "Keep on Truckin'" by Eddie Kendricks was demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status. Once again, sorry WLS 94.7 FM Chicago never played the Dick Clark guest hosted 1972 AT40 episode, but what it chooses it chooses like the 3 hour 1979 AT40 The 70's shows instead of 4 hours.

Just in: Premiere is offering TWO episodes of "AT40: The '70s" this weekend: the first four-hour show from 4/28/1979 and the show from 3/25/1972 with the latter added in memory of guest host Dick Clark who died last week. BOTH programs aired in my market! On Saturday morning, KOKZ apparently started an hour early to air the entire four-hour '79 show. Then, on Sunday afternoon, perhaps only because their full programming schedule wouldn't allow the additional hour, KMCH aired the '72 Dick Clark show. Needless to say, although my recording of the '79 program is missing the first 54 minutes (because I didn't know about the early start ahead of time), I was pleasantly surprised to find I had both shows when I checked those recordings today. Anybody know if more of these complete, four-hour, late-'70s shows are coming anytime soon?
