Here is a commentary on this week's show, which I've posted on a weekly basis on several different message boards for the past five years. American Top 40: The 80s - May 26, 2012 This week’s presentation: May 31, 1986 Cool; about time for a 1986 show. This year, they seem to be skimping on 1983, but that's not so bad, as that year is currently one of the most played years. It'll likely pull into first place sometime in June, though hopefully not next week. I'll explain that a little later. Meanwhile, here is my commentary for this week's show: Droppers: MANIC MONDAY - THE BANGLES (40) - Great song! Shame that it fell off. I preferred their next hit, "If She Knew What She Wants", but we'll probably miss it, as it would hit the chart two weeks later and lasted only five weeks on the chart. WHERE DO THE CHILDREN GO - THE HOOTERS (38) - Wow, this one sure didn't last long! This was the only "one-week wonder" on AT40 of 1986. I thought it was pretty decent, but preferred their two other Top 40 hits. AMERICAN STORM - BOB SEGER (36) - Great song! Shame that it fell off, and even more of a shame that we missed it this year. This song sounded kind of a cross between Seger's 1983 hit "Even Now" and Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run". HARLEM SHUFFLE - THE ROLLING STONES (34) - Meh, no big loss. I never was a big fan of this song. 40: WHEN THE HEART RULES THE MIND – GTR (debut) - Great song! Sounds a lot like something by Yes (as Steven Howe from that band was one of the members of GTR). 39: SLEDGEHAMMER – PETER GABRIEL (debut) - This is OK, but quite overplayed. 38: LIKE A ROCK – BOB SEGER (debut) - Great song! This one always reminds me of the Chevy truck commercial 37: THE LOVE PARADE – DREAM ACADEMY (debut) - Good song, but not quite as good as “Life In A Northern Town”. Interesting that a psychic suggest that they name their band A-ha, and the band who did take that name hit the charts about the time that the Dream Academy did (in fact, there were a few weeks that both acts were on the chart at the same time, earlier in 1986). 36: KISS – PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION (30) - Not a fan of this one. One of my least favorite songs by him/them. 35: ROUGH BOY – ZZ TOP (24) - Great song! One of my favorites from them! LDD: TIME AFTER TIME – CYNDI LAUPER - Good song, but, as stated last week, my least favorite of her 1984 hits. 34: NEVER AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME - SADE (23) - Great song! Oleta Adams’ “Rhythm Of Life” reminds me a lot of this song. 33: LIKE NO OTHER NIGHT - .38 SPECIAL (37) - Great song! One of my favorites from them! 32: YOUR WILDEST DREAMS – THE MOODY BLUES (39) - Great song! Possibly my favorite of their Top 40 hits. 31: TUFF ENUFF – FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS (35) - Pretty good song, considering I’m not a huge fan of southern rock. OPTIONAL EXTRA: INVISIBLE TOUCH - GENESIS - Great song! Definitely my favorite song from the album of the same name, which generated five hits over the next year, all of them hitting the Top Five. This one went all the way to the top. 30: TOMORROW DOESN’T MATTER TONIGHT – STARSHIP (26) - Great song! I felt this one was underrated. A great example of “Third Single Syndrome”.29: VIENNA CALLING – FALCO (33) - This song wasn’t bad, but nothing exceptional. I can see why this didn’t do as well as “Rock Me Amadeus”. 28: ALL THE THINGS SHE SAID – SIMPLE MINDS (29) - Not bad, but it seemed that they tried to make this one sound like their previous hits. 27: MOTHER’S TALK – TEARS FOR FEARS (27) - Good song, but I preferred “Head Over Heels”. 26: RAIN ON THE SCARECROW – JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP (31) - Good song, though far from being his best. 25: WHO’S JOHNNY – EL DEBARGE (32) - Great song! One of my favorites by him, with or without his family group. 24: ADDICTED TO LOVE – ROBERT PALMER (17) - I used to like this song, but overplay kinda did it in. It still remains one of the most overplayed songs of the 1980s. 23: I WANNA BE A COWBOY – BOYS DON’T CRY (28) - Good song, but kinda weird. 22: HOLDING BACK THE YEARS – SIMPLY RED (25) - When this song first came out, it was my favorite song in the world. Unfortunately, like the Robert Palmer song, overplay tarnished it. I prefer their lower peaking songs, as well as their AC-only songs (i.e. “You’ve Got It” and “Maybe Someday”). 21: WHY CAN’T THIS BE LOVE – VAN HALEN (11) - Great song! This is the one that kicked off the “Van Hagar” era. 20: YOUR LOVE – THE OUTFIELD (15) - Good song, but I preferred their next hit, “All The Love In The World”. OPTIONAL EXTRA: LOVE TOUCH - ROD STEWART - Good song, but not his best. Kind of weird that this song was in the 50s on the Hot 100 when it had already hit the Top 40 on the R&R chart. Come to think of it, the same thing happened to his next hit after this, “Another Heartache”. That song actually PEAKED in the 50s on BB and at #38 on R&R. 19: NO ONE IS TO BLAME – HOWARD JONES (22) - Great song! This one turned out to be his biggest hit ever (at least on R&R, where it went to #1). 18: TAKE ME HOME – PHIL COLLINS (7) - Great song! This was usually his final song during his concerts. 17: NOTHIN’ AT ALL – HEART (20) - Ah, I’m sure our friend JessieLou cranked this one up! As for me, this was OK, but I preferred the other singles from their self-titled album. 16: BAD BOY – MIAMI SOUND MACHINE (8) - Great song! One that always takes me back to the spring of 1986! 15: A DIFFERENT CORNER – GEORGE MICHAEL (21) - No. Just no. 14: WEST END GIRLS – PET SHOP BOYS (4) - Great song, though I preferred most of their other songs (yes, because of overplay). 13: THERE’LL BE SAD SONGS (TO MAKE YOU CRY) – BILLY OCEAN (19) - Great song! This song was inspired by a friend being moved to tears by one of Ocean’s previous hits, “Suddenly”. LDD: FAITHFULLY – JOURNEY - This song is another overplayed song - so much that it occasionally appears in the Top Ten AC recurrent list! It was, however, fitting for the dedication. 12: MOVE AWAY – CULTURE CLUB (16) - Good song. This was their last Top 40 hit as a group (Boy George did hit the Top 40 one more time in 1993 with “The Crying Game”). 11: CRUSH ON YOU – JETS (18) - Meh, not a fan of this one. Possibly my least favorite of their Top 40 hits.10: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY – JANET JACKSON (6) - And this is one of my least favorite of Janet’s Top 40 hits (along with “Control”, “Rhythm Nation” and “Alright”). OPTIONAL EXTRA: ONE HIT TO THE BODY - THE ROLLING STONES - Wow, this was an odd choice for an Optional Extra! I’ll bet this one prevented everyone from getting a perfect score predicting the extras! As for my opinion of this song, it was pretty good, but I preferred their earlier hits. 9: BE GOOD TO YOURSELF - JOURNEY (13) - Good song, though my least favorite song from Raised On Radio. 8: IS IT LOVE – MR. MISTER (14) - Good song. Their third and last Top 40 hit. 7: SOMETHING ABOUT YOU – LEVEL 42 (12) - Great song! Glad this song made the Top Ten, on both BB and R&R (because I felt sure it would have just missed on the latter). 6: ALL I NEED IS A MIRACLE – MIKE & THE MECHANICS (10) - Great song! In 1986, their songs became progressively better than the last (as their next hit, “Taken In” remains to be one of my favorite songs by them). 5: I CAN’T WAIT – NU SHOOZ (9) - Meh, I preferred Stevie Nicks’ recent hit of the same name. 4: IF YOU LEAVE – OMD (5) - Oddly enough, as much as this sounds like “So In Love”, I like THAT song much better. This song was quite overplayed (still is today). LDD: YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND - CAROLE KING - My favorite of the two versions of this song that I’ve heard. Very appropriate for the dedication, too! 3: ON MY OWN – PATTI LABELLE & MICHAEL McDONALD (3) - Great song! Despite its huge move the week before, it didn’t move an inch this week. However, it did make it to #1 - and stayed there for three weeks - one of the biggest hits of that summer! OPTIONAL EXTRA: DREAMS - VAN HALEN - Wow, another odd choice for an extra, especially since Van Halen already had a song on the countdown this week. But I’m not complaining, as this was a great song! 2: LIVE TO TELL - MADONNA (2) - Great song! This song would hit #1 the following week. 1: GREATEST LOVE OF ALL – WHITNEY HOUSTON (1) - Great song! Definitely one of my favorite songs from her! Predictions for next week: I’m going to go with June 6, 1981. That would take care of all the “would-be” AT40 Flashback shows (as the three others have already been done). Failing that, I’ll go with the June 6, 1987 show. I sure hope we don’t hear the June 4, 1983 show again, as that would be the fourth airing of that one. If it is that one, I’ll likely post another “recycled commentary”. Hervard: Great comments on the songs for an AT40: The 80's show, I hope you can do the same for AT40: The 70's if you listen to it Sunday mornings on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago like I do.

Not this week - I usually don't listen to the early-70s shows because I don't generally like the music from that era. Besides, I got a busy day at church tomorrow - and I'm still looking for stations that run the Top 40 Newcomers of the 1980s special.

EXTRA CREDIT: The first QL asker asked in his letter to Casey: "Are you the voice of Dexter Carter on "Hot Wheels?", Casey said "of course" (Casey Kasem has also voiced in cartoons Robin the Boy Wonder in Filmation's Batman and Hanna-Barbera's Superfriends, Steve on Skyhwaks, Alexander Cabot on Josie and the Pussycats, Groove on the Catanooga Cats, Mark in the English dubbed Japanese anime Battle of the Planets, Flakey Flakem in a Tiny Toon Adventures episode, Calgary Kasem in a Histeria! episode, a Bob Barker host parody in a 2 Stupid Dogs episode, and most notably - ZOINKS! - Shaggy on Scooby-Doo!) * Glad one of the 3 AT40 Special Extras was kept intact - "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry (Casey said Bobbie Gentry was the only artist to hit #1 on Billboard's 200 album chart, but later came by the 1990's and 2000's Leann Rimes and Carrie Underwood) - with the other 2 demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status (WLS 94.7 FM played the Roy Orbinson "Running Scared" AT40 EXTRA optional extra!). * ALSO: 2 original 1971 commercials were kept intact in the second hour from the original 1971 AT40 show: A commercial for Certs ("If he kissed you once, will he kiss you again?") and a "20 HITS" mail order record album commercial.

Cool; about time for a 1986 show. This year, they seem to be skimping on 1983, but that's not so bad, as that year is currently one of the most played years. Here's the 2012 breakdown up until the end of May: 1980: 2 1981: 2 1982: 2 1983: 3 1984: 3 1985: 2 1986: 3 1987: 2 1988: 3

I guess the Top 40 Disco Songs from 1979 for AT40: The 70's (4 hours with first hour optional) and the 1987 Top 40 Songs of the 1980's so far special for AT40: The 80's). 3) Did you like when Casey said when AT40 came from the FILM CAPITOL OF THE WORLD (That is Hollywood, of course)? * AND: WLS 94.7 FM played 2 of the 3 optional extras: The original 1978 AT40 extra of "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis, and the "Grease" optional extra (But for Larry Morgan: Didn't you know Grease, the movie was not re-released in 2010 but was re-released in 1998 at the same time the movie Titanic was breaking box office movie records?)

"Grease" was indeed released in selected theaters as a sing-along version in 2010. Though I wonder if the rating was changed to 'PG-13" then, why wasn't it changed in 1998?

Barry Sadler "The Ballad Of The Green Berets", the 135th #1 of the '60s Flashback Extra: Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight" 11 10 Franke & The Knockouts - Sweetheart (10) 12 09 Neil Diamond - America (8) 07 08 Grover Washington Jr. with Bill Withers - Just The Two Of Us (2) LDD: John Paul Young "Love Is In The Air" from Christine in Alma MO to anybody who's ever felt down in the dumps. She credits the song to help cheer her up when things go bad. 08 07 Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do) (4) 06 06 Gino Vanelli - Living Inside Myself (6) 05 05 REO Speedwagon - Take It On The Run (5) 04 04 A Taste Of Honey - Sukiyaki (3) 03 03 Stars On 45 - Medley (1) Flashback Extra: Juice Newton "Queen Of Hearts" 02 02 Smokey Robinson - Being With You (2) 01 01 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes (1)
- That first LDD definitely belongs in the Dave Barry "I am not making this up" file. Even Casey wasn't aware that this was an issue for youngsters. - I had The Water Brothers Band instead of Champaign listed at #12 since Casey played the former's 1975 version instead of the current version which wound up hitting its' peak. The Water Brothers Band would become Champaign. - In another chart oddity, the Top six positions from the previous week were holding with songs #7 and #8 coming close to joining them. - One more chart oddity: It isn't often when a song that is the biggest moving record in the Top 40 ("Nobody Wins") didn't even crack the Top 20. - Also, Casey mentioned Sheena Easton's "Morning Train" was about a woman who likes waiting for her man to come home from work while "Modern Girl" is the complete opposite. - Larry Morgan goofed in his story on Greg Kihn who he said is now a morning DJ in San Diego. Kihn actually is the DJ at San Jose radio station KUFX, a classic rock station - Larry also mentioned Juice Newton had four #1 hits on the Country chart. - And Casey mentions the irony of songs #1 and #2: Smokey Robinson liked Kim Carnes' version of his 1967 hit "More Love" and initially wrote "Being With You" for her until he was talked into singing the song himself. He took the advice and sure enough Kim Carnes prevented Smokey from hitting #1. #1 Soul: "What Cha' Gonna Do For Me" - Chaka Khan #1 Country: "Friends/Anywhere There's A Jukebox" - Razzy Bailey #1 Album: Hi Infidelity - REO Speedwagon

(So does the group Chicago) 9) The Captain and Tennille's "Love Will Keep Up Together" was written by Neil Sedaka? 10) Jessi Colter is Waylon Jennings' wife? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Sent in by the "BIGGEST BEATLES FAN" regarding the hits the Beatles had (60 hits on the Hot 100 up to the 1970 breakup, but 7 other artists had more hits than the Beatles!), 2) Regarding by a number of fans who wish they could be in the record business (long before the CD and iTunes/download business) about how many single records are released each year (6,000) and how many make the Hot 100 (600), the Top 40 (250), and the Top 10 (125) each year. 3) Regarding the artist with the most #1 songs in a row (Second place is Elvis Presley and the Supremes with 5 each, with Beatles in first place with 6). EXTRA CREDIT: Casey got clarification letters on the mispronouncing of "Bachman" in Bachman Turner-Overdrive (This would later happen in 1988 regarding the correct pronounciation of "Estefan" in Gloria Estefan's name!) * DROP PIECES: 1) Casey played a drop piece of the original Johnny Mathis version of "Misty" to tie in with the 1975 Ray "The Streak" Stevens remake version. 2) Casey played a drop piece of Linda Scott's 1961 song "I've Told Every Little Star" to tie in with a report on whatever became of Linda Scott. * ALSO: 1) WLS 94.7 FM played the first optional extra of the Eagles "One Of These Nights" (I'm glad WLS didn't play the second optional extra of "The Rockford Files" theme which might have been taken from one of those long out of print TVT/Tee Vee Toons records/CD's of Television's Greatest Hits). 2) Among the new AT40 stations joining on this June 7, 1975 AT40 broadcast: A station in the Rockford, Illinois area called WRRR (for those in Rockford, IL who couldn't get the Chicago AT40 station, but in Summer and Fall 1972 you could get then AT40 station WCFL AM 1000 Chicago and from 1982-1987 you could get then AT40 Chicago station WLS 890 AM in the Rockford, IL. area with good radio reception or something like that!) 3) A blooper or not?: Casey mentioned listeners to get pencil and paper ready for the AT40 address, but we never got the AT40 address unless that AT40 address segment was edited out by Premiere/Shannon Lynn for this AT40 rebroadcast!)

I just listened to an original copy of same show and to me it looks like blooper. Besides Premiere has been known to keep Casey giving out the mailing address many times. Especially the 6/8/1985 show following the second LDD, Casey DID give out the mailing address (and Premiere aired that) before playing "In My House". I'll have my recap of this show soon.

What do you mean "(NR)" for Down Under, it went to #1 in early 1983! Presumably, it wasn't on the Hot 100 during the week being featured, unlike the other three songs, which were at the positions he put in parentheses.

I forgot to mention that "Down Under" was played in memory of Greg Ham who died a while back.

- Premiere abruptly cut off Casey at the close of Hour #2 before the end-of-hour jingle could be played. - For "The Thrill Is Gone", Casey told the story of how B.B. King saved his prized guitar from a burning building which killed two people. King named his guitar Lucille after the two people were fighting over a woman named Lucille. - With remakes, TV theme songs, a song by John Travolta when he was on "Welcome Back Kotter" and veteran acts like the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and the return of the Beatles, it sure made for an interesting Bicentennial summer, huh? :) - With the Beatles charting, Paul McCartney became only the second solo Beatle to chart at the same time as the Fab Four (John Lennon was the other solo Beatle to chart at the same time as the Beatles themselves back in 1970). #1 Soul: "Sophisticated Lady" - Natalie Cole #1 Country: "El Paso City" - Marty Robbins #1 Album: Wings At The Speed Of Sound

#1 Soul: "Sophisticated Lady" - Natalie Cole #1 Country: "El Paso City" - Marty Robbins #1 Album: Wings At The Speed Of SoundAnd my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's broadcast of the June 19, 1976 AT40 episode after listening on WLS 94.7 FM this Father's Day morning are below: * BY THE NUMBERS: On the June 19, 1976 AT40 chart there are 5 female solo artists, 7 English acts, 5 duos, and 2 acts with Paul McCartney as lead singer (Beatles and Wings). * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The original "Rock 'n Roll Music" covered by the Beach Boys was originally done by Chuck Berry in 1958? 2) "I'm Easy" by Keith Carridene was first released as a single in 1975 but flopped and then got a new life after the song won the Best Song Oscar and Keith Carridene performed the song at the 1976 Academy Awards? 3) Parliment's first hit back in 1967 was "I Wanna Testify"? 4) The Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life" was from the 1966 "Revolver" album? 5) John Sebastian was a former member of the "Lovin' Spoonful"? 6) Gary Wright was a former member of Spooky Tooth? 7) Dorothy Moore was a former member of The Poppies? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding top 10 records moving out of the top 10 then coming back in - One example is Bachman Turner-Overdrive's #1 song in 1974 called "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" which dropped from 1-12-34, then back to the top 10 at #8 thanks to radio stations playing the B side called "Free Wheelin'" (Too bad AT40 never played the "Free Wheelin' B-side, but would Larry Morgan play this someday as an AT40 Optional Extra when there's a 1974 AT40 show with this BTO "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" song?). 2) Regarding the top 40 songs with the longest and shortest title: The shortest was a 1952 song called "I" (I don't know if the Prince 1993 song "7" counts as short!) and the longest was Ray Stevens' Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Disolving Fast Acting Pleasant Tasting Green and Purple Pills". 3) Regarding a time when a duo was knocked out of #1 by another duo: Once in 1963 when "Deep Purple" by Nino Tempo and April Stevens was replaced by "I'm Leaving It All Up To You" by Dale and Grace. * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey called Elvin "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" Bishop as "The Elvin Bishop Group". 2) Casey called the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' In To The Streets" as "Take It To The Streets". 3) And Casey said the Manhattans' "Kiss and Say Goodbye" was their first Top 40 hit, WRONG! This is the second Top 40 hit for the Manhattans since their first was 1975's "Don't Take Your Love"! * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of Claudine Clark's 1962 hit "Party Lights" in a story on whatever became of singer Claudine Clark (Casey even read part of a letter sent by Claudine Clark herself at the time of a 1975 Top 40 Disappearing Acts episode!). 2) There were a few plugs kept intact for the July 4, 1976 AT40 Bicentennial Special of the 40 #1 July 4th. weekend songs (Not all stations played this AT40 special!).

2) There were a few plugs kept intact for the July 4, 1976 AT40 Bicentennial Special of the 40 #1 July 4th. weekend songs (Not all stations played this AT40 special!). And Chicago was one city that didn't air this show (According to Pete Battistini, WDHF aired the 6/26/1976 show which they pre-empted a weekend earlier). If you subscribe to Reelradio. Check out the aircheck from its' airing on WPIX in New York. It included a local newsbreak with the "Theme From Shaft" being used as the instrumental portion.

- The "Down Under" extra was selected by Premiere as a tribute to Men At Work member Greg Ham who died back in April at the age of 58. RIP. - It's not often when a song announced as the biggest mover within the Top 40 does so in successive weeks. Of course when we heard the 12/26/1987 show, Tiffany's "Could've Been" was announced as the biggest mover for the second straight week. - Casey announced that there were 16 British acts in the countdown which was up from 15 the previous week. One act (Def Leppard) fell out of the Top 40 while two acts (Duran Duran and Eurythmics) debuted. You may recall when we last covered 1986, Casey announced that there were 20 British acts that week. - I wonder if anybody named Osama has ever written to AT40 since the 9/11 attacks. Just wondering. - It also seems appropriate that the second LDD is read on Father's Day weekend even though that holiday was not mentioned by Casey in reading said letter. - Of course Casey mentioned that Journey member Jonathan Cain wrote "Faithfully" for his wife Tane. Ironically, that marriage didn't last forever. - #1 Album: Thriller - Michael Jackson - #1 Soul: "Juicy Fruit" - Mtume - #1 Country: "You Can't Run From Love" - Eddie Rabbitt
