I'll find out what WLS 94.7 FM Chicago airs this Sunday morning. If it is the June 14, 1979 AT40 episode I heard last year in the 3 hour format starting with hour #2, I won't listen; but if it is the July 15, 1972 AT40 episode, I'll listen (Last year the week before this episode - The July 8, 1972 episode - aired on AT40: The 70's).

(3) 05 01 Simply Red - Holding Back the Years (1) 04 07 Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone (2) 03 04 Janet Jackson - Nasty (3)Flashback Extra: Double "The Captain of Her Heart"02 06 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (1) 01 02 Genesis - Invisible Touch (1)Five hits debut this week - five hits fall out of the survey: "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry (LW: 27), "A Different Corner" by George Michael (LW: 28), "If She Knew What She Wants" by The Bangles (LW: 29), "Live to Tell" by Madonna (LW: 31), and "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz (LW: 32). NOTES: - This show originally aired back in 2009. Seeing as it was the show airing the July 4 weekend that year, Premiere must really be fond of airing it several days ahead of time!
- Looking at the big names and hits falling out of the countdown this week, one might think we're getting another set of "diminishing returns". However as it turns out, with a couple of non-Top-10s falling out and all the debuts being future Top 10s, and one #1 falling out to be replaced with two future ones, the opposite is in fact true!
- Is it me, or did Casey say "falling eight notches" in his intro for "Mountains"?
- So Premiere also decided to play "The Greatest Love of All" as an extra in memory of her passing. Let's see...this is the third 1986 show since she died, and the previous one had that very song at #1. So...why do this now, and not before? (It would've made a perfectly-fitting extra on 3-22, in any event.)
- Another show where a writer asks Casey to find a song for her LDD, rather than requesting one specifically. (See also 12-13, and the LDD with "I Will Survive", oddly enough also the second of three LDDs that week.) You know something? I think Casey and the AT40 staff weren't half bad at finding the right songs for these kinds of dedications! :)
- Get a load of that Top 10 - Janet's the only female up there!
- #1 on the Country chart: "Until I Met You" by Judy Rodman
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Vicious Rumors" by The Timex Social Club (it's a remixed version of "Rumors")
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Rumors"
- #1 on the Album chart: Winner in You by Patti LaBelle

We'll see. It depends on when my work hours are all used up for the year - unless, I have so many available that I don't get them all in before our season ends in the Fall. (That would be past September if that's the case.)

THIS MORNING, WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO PLAYED THE JULY 15, 1972 AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST! (Glad it wasn't the July 14, 1979 episode that was aired last year again!) AND HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON IT:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Joey Heatherton's "Gone" is a remake of a 1957 song by country singer by Ferlin Husky? 2) Like the Rolling Stones, the Hollies have been hitting the charts every year since the 1964 British Invasion in America? 3) Donny Osmond's "Too Young" is a remake of a Nat King Cole song? 4) Donny Osmond is known as "the king of remakes"? 5) Donny Hathaway was originally the youngest gospel singer ever at 3 years old under the name of Donnie Pitts? 6) Neil Diamond is a hit poet besides being a songwriter and concert performer? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the most chart records without a #1 song - James Brown with 73 chart records up to the 1972 date. 2) Regarding the most chart songs for a female artist - 68 for Patti Page from 1948 to 1968. 3) Regarding if there has been a song that hit #1 pop, soul, and country at the same time - There has, Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" in 1956. * BLOOPERS: Casey incorrectly mentioned The 5th. Dimension's "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" was #23 instead of #33, and Casey called Looking Glass' song "Brandy You're a Fine Girl" as "Brandy You're a Fine Fine Girl". And although not a blooper, Casey mentioned for the #32 song lead in "Here's what's his name, I mean here's Bobby Vinton." (Bobby Vinton was on this AT40 chart with "Sealed With a Kiss".) * ALSO: 1) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first optional extra for this AT40: The 70's episode of "Happy" by the Rolling Stones. 2) The 7 minute long version of "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes was played. 3) 6 month July-December 1972 Chicago AT40 station WCFL gets mentioned. 4) At the end of the second hour, Casey had time to mention the 3 droppers of this AT40 countdown (Another piece of the puzzle of when and which AT40 show Casey stopped mentioning droppers before it was resumed in December 1983).

Below are the thoughts I gave on the AT40: The 70's July 14, 1979 3 hour rebroadcast when WLS 94.7 FM Chicago aired this last year (although this week WLS 94.7 FM decided to go for the July 15, 1972 AT40 episode to avoid a repeat of last year's AT40 July 14, 1979 3 hour rebroadcast): When I listened to the 3 hour AT40: The 70's episode from July 14, 1979 on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this weekend, it gave me flashbacks of a decade ago when the then Chicago 94.7 FM which was then 80's/Hot AC was playing the old AT40 1980's Flashback shows starting with the second hour. This 1979 episode, originally a 4 hour episode, started with the second hour so that the first hour was not played. And my thoughts of what I learned from the July 14, 1979 AT40 episode: * The previous week on July 7-8, 1979 AT40 had the Top 40 disco songs special (although for the Cleveland, Ohio area on WGCL G-98 FM since the station was anti disco the station did its own AT40 with Townsend Coleman guest hosting) * Casey gave a good report on the town of Henrietta, Oklahoma not allowing disco dancing in a town that prohibited dancing until the rule was lifted in 1978. (I bet it wasn't the inspiration for the 1984 movie "Footloose"). * Casey even mentioned in a story with a wedding featuring 3 Beatles members plus members of Cream and Mick Jagger that John Lennon was absent since he was about to work on his first new album (That John Lennon album, Double Fantasy, was released November 1980, 1 month before John Lennon tragically passed away.) * Kiss uses precautions for safety lasers on thier touring shows? * RAYDIO is a hybrid name for Ray Parker Jr. (lead singer) and RADIO. * Poco is Spanish for "scant" and "few". * McFadden and Whitehead of "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" fame were originally stockboys in the Epic records headquarters. * A line in the #4 Rickie Lee Jones song "Chuck E.'s in Love" mentions "P.L.P." which stands for "public leaning post" or "hanging around". * Well, I did get to hear the 1 Long Distance Dedication ("You Are the Sunshine of My Life") and the 1 AT40 Archives 1974 song ("I Honestly Love You"). But why leave out the other AT40 Archives song from 1974 ("Nothing From Nothing") as an optional extra? WLS 94.7 FM doesn't play the optional AT40: The 70's extras! And I guess next weekend and for the forseeable weeks and months to come it's back to 1 AT40: The 70's episode rather than a choice of 2 episodes like the last 2 weeks and the last week of April 2012 were.

I actually caught two errors on the 7/19/86 show. Libra mentioned one of them, Casey saying that Prince fell 8 notches instead of 12. But I also heard him intro Robert Palmer as being "up three notches to #36" instead of #33. He said #33 at the end, though.

This week, there is only one "AT40: The '70s" show instead of two the last two weeks so I'm back to recapping both '70s and '80s shows in one post.
This week, "AT40: The '70s" features 7/22/1978. This show originally aired back in 2007 and 2008.

"AT40: The '80s" this week presents 7/23/1988.

Also: Isn't the 7/30/88 AT40 episode allowed in AT40: The 80's despite being 2 weeks before Casey's last original AT40 before the Shadoe Stevens takeover because that week was guest hosted by Daryl Hall and John Oates? One other thing about the 7/23/88 AT40 episode to be aired on AT40: The 80's this weekend: It was originally the last 1988 AT40 episode (but with first hour not played) on the 2001-2002 AT40 Flashback series possibly to replace the June 26, 1980 AT40 episode after Premiere dropped 1980 and 1981 AT40 episodes from the Flashback mix.

I guess it's possible the Hall & Oates show could be played, but unlikely since Premiere virtually never plays non-Casey hosted AT40s. Dick Clark was probably a one-time special case.
However, if they ever were to play another non-Casey show, Hall & Oates would likely be it as they're probably the only guest hosts of that period who can compare to Clark in terms of current public name recognition. But if Premiere were to go further down that route, then it would make more sense to put Shadoe in as well. Frankly I think they're more likely to air Casey's Top 40s than additional AT40s hosted by Shadoe or anyone else, as listeners wouldn't notice as much of a difference.

But the 1989 Casey's Top 40 shows used the now defunct Radio and Records as a source and the Long Distance Dedications were renamed "Requests and Dedications" since Shadoe Stevens on the old AT40 was still using the Billboard chart source and the LDD name.

That's true, but to present-day listeners and affiliates that may be less important than the fact that Casey's familiar voice and presentation are hosting them, and they would probably blend in better with the Casey AT40s as a result. Of course, they would have to get permission to use the R&R chart data (however that can be done for a defunct magazine; Rick Dees replays shows with it), and would probably also like to remove the Westwood One (now part of Dial Global) references.

- This is the third airing for this particular show as it had previously aired in 2007 and 2008. - Interesting when Casey gave the update on the Singing Nun and her legal troubles, this weekend actually was a national holiday in her native Belgium (7/21). - This is the first episode of "AT40: The '70s" to pay tribute to two recently deceased performers. Of course last weekend's episode of "AT40: The '80s" had two tributes (Whitney Houston, Davy Jones) last week. - Although "Ebony Eyes" was chosen as the Bob Welch tribute, he was still in that week's Hot 100 with "Hot Love, Cold World" (which fell to #41 that week). - And for the final extra, Larry Morgan did note that "Kiss You All Over" was the very first #1 song when AT40 expanded to four hours in October. It's worth pointing out that "Kiss You All Over" was also #1 on the final three-hour episode as well. - #1 Soul: "You And I" - Rick James - #1 Country: "Only One Love In My Life" - Ronnie Milsap - #1 Album: Some Girls - The Rolling Stones

- #1 Soul: "You And I" - Rick James - #1 Country: "Only One Love In My Life" - Ronnie Milsap - #1 Album: Some Girls - The Rolling Stones HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S JULY 22, 1978 AT40 REBROADCAST ON AT40: THE 70'S THAT I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING: * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 3 movie title songs in a row on this AT40 chart - "If Ever I See You Again", "FM", and "Thank God It's Friday"; and there are 7 disco songs on there as well. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Quincy Jones had been up to the 1978 date in 1,000 albums? 2) Elelyn Champagne King isn't old enough yet to buy champagne in 1978? 3) The B-side of Jackson Browne's "Stay" is called "The Load Out"? 4) Roberta Flack became a record producer under the name Rubina Flake? 5) Foreigner was originally the opening act for The Doobie Brothers in their concert tour? 6) The group ABBA is the most profitable business thing in Sweden thanks to their record sales and concerts? 7) For 29 of the past 32 weeks the RSO record label has had #1 songs? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding male, female, and group with the most #1 albums: Bing Crosby with 10 in the male catagory, the Beatles with 15 in the group catagory, and in the 1978 time: A tie in the women catagory with 3 each: Carole King and (she would later break the tie) Barbra Striesand. 2) Regarding the female singer to spend the most weeks on the album chart: Carole King with her Tapestry album spending 303 weeks from 1971 to 1977. * BLOOPERS: Casey said Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Making Love" album was released in 1975 instead of 1974. * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of Elvis Presley's "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" to tie into the inspiration behind Meat Loaf's "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad". 2) WLS 94.7 FM played the 3rd. optional extra of "Kiss You All Over" by Exile (Although the tribute optional extras of Bob Welch and Robin Gibb didn't get played anyway).

Six debuts this week and the six songs falling out are: "Trouble" (LW: #39) "One More Try" (LW: #38) "Tall Cool One" (LW: #34) "Kiss Me Deadly" (LW: #32) "Beds Are Burning" (LW: #31) and "Together Forever" (LW: #30)
- This is the first airing for the 7/23/1988 show which at that point had been the latest AT40 show in the Casey Kasem era yet to be played (that honor now falls to the 6/12/1988 show) - For the second straight AT40 1988 show, Premiere has opted to show late-peaking #1 hits as optional extras. Only two such songs were not played in either this show or the 5/14/1988 show: UB40's "Red Red Wine" (which Casey actually played in 1984 when it first charted) and Will To Power's "Baby I Love Your Way/Free Bird". - Interesting that the letter writer who wanted to know about which act had the longest Top 10 streak addressed his letter "Dear AT40" instead of "Dear Casey". The writer obviously wasn't sure if either Casey or incoming host Shadoe Stevens would be reading his letter. :) - Speaking of which, in preparation for the transition of the Casey Kasem era to the Shadoe Stevens era the "Casey's Coast-to-Coast" jingles were not played as was the case with the 7/16/1988 show that Premiere aired last year. - #1 Album: Hysteria - Def Leppard - #1 Country: "Set 'Em Up Joe" - Vern Gosdin - #1 Dance: "What's On Your Mind" - Information Society - #1 Black Singles: "Don't Be Cruel" - Bobby Brown

Brown I want to say that 6/25 is the last one to have the "Casey's Coast to Coast", yes? (I have that show.)

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE JULY 27, 1974 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Up to the 1974 date, Paul McCartney had 23 #1's - 20 with the Beatles, 1 with Linda McCartney, and 2 with Wings? 2) Billy Crash Craddock started his music career in 1957 as a rock 'n roll singer but by 1974 became a country singer? 3) Paul Anka was only 15 years old when he hit with "Diana"? 4) Andy Kim's first top 40 hit in 1968 was "How Did We Get This Way"? 5) "You Won't See Me", covered by Anne Murray, was originally a track on the Beatles album "Rubber Soul"? 6) Rufus calls their music "CRUD(?!) music"? 7) Wet Willie comes from Macon, GA. (The same town where Little Richard, Otis Redding, and James Brown come from!)? 8) Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Weed" was originally written in 1963 by Don Bowman (Yes, it's the same Don Bowman who would be the first host of the AT40 spin off American Country Countdown)? 9) The Impressions originally had Jerry Butler as top label credit even after Jerry left the group? 10) Dave Loggins has never met Kenny Loggins' brother Dan? 11) John Denver in 1974 had back to back #1 songs? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the album that spent the longest on the chart - Up to the 1974 time, Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits with 490 weeks (And over a decade later Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album would be the record breaker). * KEPT INTACT IN THE SHOW VINTAGE RADIO STATION I.D.'S HEARD IN THIS 1974 AT40 EPISODE: WOKL in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; WODC in Marietta, Georgia; WSFC in Durham, North Carolina; KROL in the Rio Grande Valley; WWNA in Beckley/South West Virginia; WFNL in Green Bay, Wisconsin; WCLG in Morgantown, West Virginia; WRAR somewhere in Virginia; and a radio station in Santa Barbara, California with the dial number 152 AM (And believe it or not, 152 is also the weight in pounds Casey Kasem had in 1974!) * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey mentioned Jim Croce had 5 top 40 hits after his death, but Mr. Croce had 4, not 5! 2) Casey mentioned that Olivia Newton John was born in Wales, but she was born in England and raised in Australia! 3) Casey mentioned Three Dog Night's first record "Try a Little Tenderness" missed the Top 40, but it did make the Top 40! 4) And according to Premiere's AT40: The 70's cue sheets, was there some tape warble at the start of the show thanks to a minor poor remastering or something like that? * ALSO: 1) The address to send AT40 question letters (in Los Angeles, California - but a few months later the address moved to Universal City, California) was kept intact. 2) The bleeped version of Lamont Dozier's "Fish Ain't Bitin'" was played. 3) WLS played the first AT40 Optional Extra of "Nothing From Nothing" by Billy "The Fifth Beatle"(!) Preston.

- The second LDD was in response to an LDD that aired on 1/29/1983 when a boy named Michael was afraid to ask out a girl named Sue. What I find interesting is that it took six months for anybody to reply to a previous LDD. - Among extra content, Larry Morgan noted that Asia's "Don't Cry" hit #1 on the Rock chart and that "Promises, Promises" peaked at #95 in their native England. - "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" was noticeably edited unlike an extra song I will post in the '70s recap. - #1 Country: "I Always Get Lucky With You" - George Jones - #1 Soul: She Works Hard For The Money - #1 Album: Synchronicity - The Police

- This was a repeat of a previous show that aired back in 2007. Not only that but it is the first '70s chart that cartman has covered in this very thread. :) - Premiere did play the full version of "Beach Baby" which comes a surprise considering the editing job that "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" got in the '80s show this week. - It seems so unusual to find two former #1 songs occupying the #40 and #39 positions on the chart. - #1 Soul: "My Thang" - James Brown - #1 Country: "You Can't Be A Beacon" - Donna Fargo - #1 Album: Caribou - Elton John
