Other than the fact it was from "Back To The Future" I'm stumped. Maybe "Back in Time" by Huey Lewis and the News got radio airplay a lot but didn't get released as a single to make Billboard's Hot 100 chart (but might or might have not made R&R's chart which was mostly airplay), I wonder if Premiere on AT40: The 80's will ever play in future 1980's shows as optional extras these airplay only songs that never got single releases: * "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming (Too Good To Be True)" - Jermaine Jackson (1984) * "The Lady In My Life" - Michael Jackson (circa 1982-1984) * "Baby Be Mine"- Michael Jackson (circa 1982-1984) * "Be Good Johnny" - Men at Work (circa 1982-1983) * "Pink Cadillac" - Bruce Springsteen (1984 - B side of "Dancing in the Dark") * "Trapped" - Bruce Springsteen (1985) * "Edge of a Broken Heart" - Bon Jovi (1987) * "Never Say Goodbye" - Bon Jovi (1987) * "Spotlight" - Madonna (1988) I know Madonna's "Into the Groove" has been on Optional Extra 1980's status. And for 1970's not making chart due to lack of 45 singles that gotten lots of airplay, Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman" did, but what about in the future for AT40: The 70's Optional Extras: * "Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zepplin (1971) * "Pinball Wizard" - Elton John (circa 1975-1976) * "Isn't She Lovely" - Stevie Wonder (circa 1976-1977) * "All My Love" - Led Zepplin (1979) Finally: Since this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode has as mostly always 1 Archive song demoted to Optional Extra status, has there ever been an AT40: The 80's episode that had at least 1 Archive song or extra demoted to Optional Extra status?

I've been listening to "AT40: The '80s" the last four years and there have been no examples that I know of.

"Be My Baby"? Do you mean "Baby Be Mine", one of two tracks off the original "Thriller" that was never a single? "Into the Groove" could have been used again this week, as it was a top 10 airplay hit in summer 1985 (according to Radio & Records.) And while not an optional extra, Premiere did play a 1980 countdown that included "Stairway to Heaven" as a Long Distance Dedication--all seven minutes and change of it. If it were used as an optional extra for a 1971 or 1972 show, either it or several of the songs in the countdown would have to be heavily edited.

As of last weekend, I've been switched to working morning/afternoons instead of afternoon/evenings, leaving me a bit more time to catch the shows now. :)
- Did Premiere edit out Casey reading off the droppers again? Leading in to "Smokin' in the Boys Room", he says "Five songs debut on American Top 40 this week..." as though he was gearing up to read the droppers, but instead it segued right into his intro for the song.
- "Back in Time" was neither released as a single, nor did it even chart on airplay. It was supposed to be the first single off the Back to the Future soundtrack (and Larry Morgan did point out that the movie was the top-grosser of the year), but "The Power of Love" garnered such an audience response that it was released instead.
- Take a look at the stats for Paul Hardcastle's song closely.
- This week certainly had some record-setting #1s on Billboard's charts - Aretha nabbed her 20th Soul chart #1, and Alabama nabbed their 17th Country #1 in a row (both records which I believe still stand, albeit with Alabama's extended to 21 before they were done). And then...Tears For Fears became the 8th foreign act in a row to hit #1 on the Pop chart!
- #1 on the Country chart: "40 Hour Week" by Alabama
- #1 on the Album chart: Songs From the Big Chair by Tears For Fears
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Freeway of Love"
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Freeway of Love"

No. Droppers were read before #36.
Here's how Casey said it:
Five songs debut this week on AT40 and the five songs that fall out of the countdown are "Angel" by Madonna (LW: #38) "Let It Go" by Animotion (LW: #39) "Crazy In The Night" by Kim Carnes (LW: #32) "Heaven" by Bryan Adams (LW: #28) and "The Goonies R Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper (LW: #27)
Interestingly, Charlie Van Dyke subbed for Casey the following week which saw only two debuts: The Motels' "Shame" which debuted at #40 and Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" which debuted at #28 (Hour #2). Charlie read the two droppers after "Money For Nothing". That's the only AT40 show in the '80s Casey era in which the droppers were read in any hour other than Hour #1.

Flashback Extra: Robert Palmer "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" 16 12 Elton John - Mama Can't Buy You Love (9) 12 11 Raydio - You Can't Change That (9) 07 10 Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me (7) 04 09 Donna Summer - Hot Stuff (1) 09 08 Dr. Hook - When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman (6) 05 07 David Naughton - Makin' It (5) 18 06 The Knack - My Sharona (1) 06 05 John Stewart - Gold (5) 10 04 Barbra Streisand - The Main Event/Fight (3) 02 03 Anita Ward - Ring My Bell (1) AT40 Flashback Extra: From December 1974 - Helen Reddy "Angie Baby", the 122nd #1 of the decade. 03 02 Chic - Good Times (1) 01 01 Donna Summer - Bad Girls (1)
- Stations of the week: WODC and CKWW - If anybody didn't listen to the Hour #1 extra, the story by Larry Morgan chronicled Nick Lowe's 13 studio albums but he would have only one Top 40 hit. - And introing Robert Palmer's "Bad Case Of Loving You" Larry compared the song title as "a similar condition" to his #1 hit from 1986 "Addicted To Love". Robert must be one sick fella. :) - In the '80s post, Libra was unsure if Casey listed that week's droppers. Well, here Casey did not mention any affiliates in Hour #4. - Though this is Premiere's first airing of the 8/4/79 show, it's not the first time in recent memory this show had aired on commercial radio. In 2009, WTIC had a copy of this show and played the entire four-hour version. Of course, other than WODC and WHNN (among others), it's difficult to find a current affiliate willing to air all four hours of any '70s shows after 10/1978. :( - #1 Country: "You're The Only One" - Dolly Parton - #1 Disco: "I've Got The Next Dance" - Deniece Williams - #1 Soul: Good Times - #1 Album: Bad Girls

The Dolly Parton song at #1 on the country chart was called "You're the Only One". If Casey said "not" in its title, that was in error.

:( - #1 Country: "You're The Only One" - Dolly Parton - #1 Disco: "I've Got The Next Dance" - Deniece Williams - #1 Soul: Good Times - #1 Album: Bad GirlsI am on vacation with laptop and iPad access this weekend, but I will be back to posting AT40: The 70's via WLS 94.7 FM Chicago next weekend, allthough I listened to AT40: The 70's on Sunny 105.9 FM from Orlando, Florida and that station started the show with the second hour not going for the full 4 hour version. I guess WLS 94.7 FM Chicago did the same. I even heard the drop piece of Arthur Fielder's orchestral version of the Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" as part of Casey's tribute to Mr. Fielder who died in July 1979. And kept intact in the show was the offer from Casey to send a self addressed, stamped legal size envelope to AT40 in Universal City, California to get the free 1979 AT40 Worldwide Directory (For the 1973 directory it was different that you had to write to your local AT40 station for this). Has the 1979 AT40 Worldwide Directory ever surfaced on ebay? One final thing: Any word on when AT40: The 70's will play the first of at least 2 or 3 1970 AT40 episodes before 2012 is over?

This coming weekend, with the chart from August 15, 1970 (it originally aired a week earlier.) There are at least a few stations that have been moving away from playing early 70s AT40s; for them August 13, 1977, will be offered as an alternative. The 80s will be August 11, 1984.

I don't recall "Baby Be Mine" or "The Lady In My Life" ever being played on the radio, though I'm kind of surprised - since they were the only two songs not released from Thriller, you'd think that they'd be played if only because they were both from a huge album (kind of like "Trapped", on Springsteen's Born In The USA).

Shadoe Stevens even mentioned the two Michael Jackson Thriller album not released as single tracks in a response to a question letter if any album has had all of its songs make the Top 40 (which, excluding greatest hits and complimation albums, never has happened) in an August 1990 AT40 episode. I think I remember WLS AM 890 in Spring 1984 play a few times Michael Jackson's "The Lady In My Life".

Actually, Bruce Springsteen's "Trapped" is not on the "Born in the USA" album, it's on the 1985 "We Are The World - USA For Africa" album.

REGARDING AT40: THE 70'S ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
WLS 94.7 FM Chicago chose to air the August 13, 1977 AT40 episode rather than the August 15, 1970 AT40 episode, so here are my thoughts: * BY THE NUMBERS: The August 13, 1977 AT40 chart had 6 remakes and 11 foreign acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Glen Campbell's "Sunflower" was written by Neil Diamond? 2) The Bee Gees' song "Edge of the Universe" was first a track on the Bee Gees' 1975 album "Main Course"? 3) B.J. Thoimas was nearly killed with a punchured lung in 1968? 4) Johnny Rivers' "Swayin' To The Music" was originally done in 1976 by the Funky Kings? 5) Ram Jam's "Black Betty" was written by a songwriter/producer named Leadbelly? 6) Alice Cooper calls Helen Reddy the "QUEEN OF HEAVY METAL HOUSEWIFE ROCK"? 7) 3 founding members of ELO once had a lawsuit with Prime Minister Wilson over a publicity postcard that was in bad taste (The Prime Minister won the lawsuit)? 8) The Bay City Rollers couldn't hold on to 3 members who left the group to make the Bay City Rollers a quartet? 9) The Commodores were the supporting act for the Jackson 5 in concerts? 10) Rita Coolridge had her career rebooted thanks to a marriage with Kris Kristofferson? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the female who had more albums on the album chart - Nancy Wilson.
Will next weekend's AT40: THE 70's offer 2 shows like this weekend did or just 1 show? We'll see soon...

I wonder if Premiere will offer an AT40: The 70's episode from late 1972 (mostly November-December) with no alternate...
