Here are this weekend's shows:
"AT40: The '70s" this week presents 8/21/1976.
Four songs debuted this week: "If You Leave Me Now" - Chicago (#28) "Springtime Mama" - Henry Gross (#37) "I Can't Hear You No More" - Helen Reddy (#38) "One Love In My Lifetime" - Diana Ross (#40)
Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "If You Know What I Mean" - Neil Diamond (#26) "Something He Can Feel" - Aretha Franklin (#28) "Let Her In" - John Travolta (#31) "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker (Give Up The Funk)" - Parliament (#36)
Biggest Mover: "Still The One" - Orleans (#38 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "Moonlight Feels Right" - Starbuck (#18 to #34)
Original extras: "Spinning Wheel" - Blood, Sweat & Tears This song will be played as one of the optional extras this week.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Disco Duck" - Rick Dees & His Cast Of Idiots (#79) Hour #2: "That'll Be The Day" - Linda Ronstadt (#71; debuted) Hour #3: "Spinning Wheel" - Blood, Sweat & Tears (original AT40 extra)
"AT40: The '80s" this week features 8/15/1987.
For the record, this was during the time when George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" was in the countdown and - unlike the 6/20/1987 show we heard earlier this year - Casey does not mention the song's title and since "I Want Your Sex" was at #2 the previous week, Casey does not begin the show with the full Top 3 recap as he normally did.
Seven songs debuted this week: "Touch Of Grey" - Grateful Dead (#32) "Lies" - Jonathan Butler (#35) "I Heard A Rumour" - Bananarama (#36) "Jam Tonight" - Freddie Jackson (#37) "Who Found Who" - Jellybean featuring Elisa Fiorillo (#38) "I Need Love" - LL Cool J (#39) "One Heartbeat" - Smokey Robinson (#40)
Seven songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Girls, Girls, Girls" - Motley Crue (#24) "Hearts On Fire" - Bryan Adams (#26) "Something So Strong" - Crowded House (#27) "Point Of No Return" - Expose (#30) "Don't Disturb This Groove" - The System (#31) "Happy" - Surface (#35) "Funkytown" - Psuedo Echo (#38)
Biggest Mover: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" - Michael Jackson Featuring Siedah Garrett (#37 to #16) Biggest Dropper: "Kiss Him Goodbye" - The Nylons (#18 to #34)
Interestingly enough, Whitney Houston had the second biggest moving song ("Didn't We Almost Have It All") and the second biggest dropping song ("I Wanna Dance With Somebody").
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Lean On Me" - Club Nouveau "Suspicious Minds" - Elvis Presley (the special live version of the song in honor of the 10th year anniversary of Elvis' death)
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Oh Yeah" - Yello (#82) Hour #2: "U Got The Look" - Prince with Sheena Easton (#54) Hour #3: "Carrie" - Europe (#46) Hour #4: "Who Will You Run To" - Heart (#64; debuted)

Lucky I don't post on the Pulse CHR/Pop section on the Ryan AT40 weekly threads anymore...), 2) Then 1976 Chicago AT40 radio station WDAF gets a mention, 3) There was a plug kept intact in the show for the upcoming in October 1976 AT40 special of the Top 40 songs during the Beatles years besides the kept intact AT40 Universal City, California snail mail address. 4) Casey mentioned Elizabeth Bruce of the Saturday Evening Post a thanks for a mention in an article on TV Hucksters - I wish I could see that August 1976 S.E.P. TV Hucksters article online! FINAL NOTE: This next week's AT40 chart for August 28, 1976 following this August 21, 1976 AT40 episode would have only 1 debut on it: "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine spending a lone week at #40. Too bad Premiere has yet to play the August 28, 1976 AT40 episode on AT40: The 70's! (Last year Premiere played the September 4, 1976 AT40 episode that was 1 week after that 1 debut week from August 28, 1976)

(1) 01 01 U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (1)And with seven new songs, we've got seven that fall out. Those droppers are: "Happy" (LW: 35), "Funkytown" (LW: 38), "Don't Disturb This Groove" (LW: 31), "Point of No Return" (LW: 30), "Something So Strong" (LW: 27), "Hearts on Fire" (LW: 26), and "Girls, Girls, Girls (LW: 24). NOTES: - This week's Stations of the Week: WLXT and WEZF (for the first hour).
- Casey goes out of his way to avoid mention of the George Michael song title, even foregoing his usual Top 3 recap at the beginning of the show in favor of focusing on U2 hitting the top.
- From the "What a Difference a Year...Or Seven! Makes" files: Seven years ago on 8-16-80, we saw a pretty crazy chart. Much the same can be said...of this one!
- From the "Slow and Steady Wins the Race" files: Note that both Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson jump over Whitesnake this week. They would follow both of them to #1, and of the three songs in question, finish the highest on the 1987 year-end chart.
- Just as a point of reference, that show ten years ago featuring "Suspicious Minds" was 8-27-77.
- That's a really crazy spot to place that Elvis LDD - right next to the biggest mover within The 40 in nearly five years, who by the way...was also, "The King...of Pop"!
- Speaking of that LDD, it ran just over seven minutes long. :o
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Strangelove" by Depeche Mode
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston
- #1 on the Country chart: "A Long Line of Love" by Michael Martin Murphey
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Jam Tonight"
EDIT: LOL! Double posting this week.

Premiere has aired the show - see below. :) Don't remember if it was the 7-minute song when they aired the show though. August 27, 1977 40 -- Heatwave - Boogie Nights (2) 39 -- Carly Simon - Nobody Does it Better (2) 38 -- Meco - Star Wars Theme / Cantina Band (1) 37 27 Barbra Streisand - My Heart Belongs to Me (4) 36 38 Carole King - Hard Rock Cafe (30) 35 -- Ronnie Milsap - It Was Almost Like a Song (16) 34 36 Hot Chocolate - So You Win Again (31) 33 10 The Bay City Rollers - You Made Me Believe in Magic (10)32 32 Slave - Slide (32)31 31 Alan O' Day - Undercover Angel (1) 30 40 Shaun Cassidy - That's Rock 'N' Roll (3) 29 34 B.J. Thomas - Don't Worry Baby (17) 28 33 The Bee Gees - Edge of the Universe (26) 27 29 Kiss - Christine Sixteen (25) 26 26 Helen Reddy - You're My World (18) 25 09 Alice Cooper - You and Me (9) 24 30 KC & The Sunshine Band - Keep it Comin' Love (2) 23 07 Peter McCann - Do You Wanna Make Love (5) 22 24 Johnny Rivers - Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin') (10) 21 25 Stephen Bishop - On and On (11) 20 22 Foreigner - Cold as Ice (6) 19 20 Ram Jam - Black Betty (18) AT40 Elvis Presley Tribute - "Suspicious Minds" live from Las Vegas, as heard in concert by Casey18 18 Meri Wilson - Telephone Man (18) 17 19 Leo Sayer - How Much Love (17)16 21 London Symphony Orchestra - Theme From Star Wars (10) 15 17 Supertramp - Give a Little Bit (15)14 15 Sanford/Townsend Band - Smoke From a Distant Fire (9) 13 16 Electric Light Orchestra - Telephone Line (7) 12 14 Heart - Barracuda (11) 11 04 Peter Frampton - I'm in You (2) 10 23 The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23 (5)09 11 Fleetwood Mac - Don't Stop (3) 08 13 The Floaters - Float On (2) 07 08 Crosby, Stills, & Nash - Just a Song Before I Go (7) 06 06 deleted Cruise - Whatcha Gonna Do (6)05 12 James Taylor - Handy Man (4) 04 05 The Commodores - Easy (4)03 03 Rita Coolidge - (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher (2) 02 02 Andy Gibb - I Just Want to Be Your Everything (1) 01 01 The Emotions - Best of My Love (1)NOTES: - Don't expect a 70s posting from me very often. I don't usually listen to the 70s show at all, but I wanted to tune in for this one to hear Casey's Elvis tribute. Having been used to four-hour countdowns since...ever, the pacing of a 3-hour show like this was a bit jarring.
- OK, #40 was cut to a minute in length (maybe) - not the best way to start the show.
- Who knew that both this show and the 80s show would have biggest droppers nearly equal in size falling from their peaks?
- WHNN, unlike their 80s counterpart, did not opt for Premiere's extras this week.
- Casey chose not just any song to pay tribute - he chose the one that moved him the most when he heard it.
- Casey's stories must have had better timing in the 70s - he related that Rumors set the new record for longest-running #1 album of the 70s to lead into "Don't Stop". Several of the 80s shows have had no such gift for timing.
- Casey ended both shows this weekend with "...and keep your radio tuned right where it is".
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Float On"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" by Crystal Gayle
- #1 on the Album chart: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac

EDIT: LOL! Double posting this week. Not anymore. I removed my post. Wasn't sure if you were going to get to it or not. I actually wasn't sure if I was either. Didn't get to hear the first hour at all until earlier today.

At least you got the droppers this time. Of course next week is 1982 so no droppers mention this time (but there is one for the 8/28/1971 show).

Has AT40: The 70's ever aired in the past the August 27, 1977 AT40 episode with the 7 minute Elvis "Suspicious Minds" live version extra intact? Here's the original cue sheet: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/08-27-77.pdfSince the segment with "Suspicious Minds" runs for 13:54, it was evidently the full 7 minute song originally, and I think Premiere played all of it, or at least most of it (I didn't time it precisely when it aired.) That was made up for by edits elsewhere; "Boogie Nights", at #40, was less than a minute long when Premiere played it two years ago.

Because there are two offerings for "AT40: The '70s" this week, I will be making a two-part post about classic AT40 shows this weekend (I think this is my first preview post in the newly merged AC/Hot AC thread). '80s preview is first.
"AT40: The '80s" this week is from 8/28/1982.
Six songs debuted that week: "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" - Michael McDonald (#33) "Hold On" - Santana (#34) "What's Forever For" - Michael Martin Murphey (#35) "Do You Wanna Touch Me" - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (#37) "Never Been In Love" - Randy Meisner (#39) "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely" - Paul Davis (#40)
Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "If The Love Fits Wear It" - Leslie Pearl (#28) "Paperlate" - Genesis (#32) "Your Imagination" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#33) "Personally" - Karla Bonoff (#35) "Route 101" - Herb Alpert (#37) "I Really Don't Need No Light" - Jeffrey Osborne (#39)
Biggest Mover: "Let Me Tickle Your Fancy" - Jermaine Jackson (#36 to #30) Biggest Dropper: "Tainted Love" - Soft Cell (#23 to #31)
Original extras: "Happy" - The Rolling Stones "Proud Mary" - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Long Distance Dedications: "Lost In Love" - Air Supply "Theme From The Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not)" - Joey Scarbury
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Nobody" - Sylvia (#89; debuted) Hour #2: "Steppin' Out" - Joe Jackson (#81) Hour #3: "I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock Of Seagulls (#43) Hour #4: "You Don't Want Me Anymore" - Steel Breeze (#67; highest debut)
'70s post is coming shortly.

I'll find out this Sunday morning what WLS 94.7 FM Chicago plays for AT40: The 70's. If it is The August 28, 1971 AT40 episode, I'll listen, but if it is the August 26, 1978 AT40 episode that I heard on WLS 94.7 FM last year, I won't listen. Also: The August 26, 1978 AT40 episode will join an April 1978 AT40 episode for being the second AT40 episode to be played/aired on AT40: The 70's 4 times. And what is it now with Premiere offering 2 AT40: The 70's shows when 1970, 1971, and 1972 episodes come up?

[... edited for brevity ...] And what is it now with Premiere offering 2 AT40: The 70's shows when 1970, 1971, and 1972 episodes come up? I think someone else may have mentioned that's done to provide an alternate program for those affiliates whose normal playlist does not include hits of the early '70s. In fact, two of my three AT40 The 70's affiliates fit into that group. Personally, I like it because on those weekends I get to hear two '70s episodes. And, due to my advanced age, I'd rather Premiere would offer an early-'80s alternate anytime the '80s episode is post-1986. ;)

Just tuned into WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this morning, and the station decided to air the August 26, 1978 AT40 - The 70's episode rather than the August 1971 AT40 The 70's. This is the first second airing of an AT40 The 70's episode since WLS 94.7 FM Chicago started to carry the show in Spring 2011.
So...no thoughts this week, hopefully things will be back to normal with a new fresh AT40: The 70's episode.

And now for my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's rebroadcast of the August 26, 1978 AT40 episode with the first ever Long Distance Dedication featured that I listened to on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago True Oldies: * FIRST, FOR THE FIRST LDD. Do you think it was touching or something like that? Neil Diamond's "Desiree" is a good song for the first ever LDD, and even the AT40 Universal City, CA snail mail address to send LDD's was kept intact. And Casey said that there will be a LDD every week on AT40, but when AT40 expanded to 4 hours several weeks later, did Casey sometimes do 2 LDD's a week on average? NOW FOR THE OTHER NON LDD RELATED THINGS: * 2 groups from Boston in the Top 40: The Cars and the apply named Boston. * 9 movie songs were in this AT40 episode (even "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh was featured in the movie "F.M."?) * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Cheryl Ladd, who entered AT40's August 1978 chart at #37 with "Think it Over", was prior to her role on Charlie's Angels was acting in TV commercials for Ultra Brite and Wella Balsam? (Casey didn't even mention that prior to Charlie's Angels in the early 1970's Cheryl Ladd (under the name Cherrie Moore) was the singing voice for Melody on the Hanna-Barbera produced cartoon series "Josie and the Pussycats" - On that same cartoon Casey Kasem was the voice of Alexander Cabot, believe it or not!), 2) Toby Beau is also the name of a shrimp boat? 3) Barry Manilow once gave to his fans who ordered tickets to one of his 1978 concerts free bagels? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) The most successful comedy album is Bob Newhart's "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart". 2) The Dave Clark Five became the only act with 2 different songs titled "Everybody Knows" despite the same title but a different song in each to make the Hot 100 - The first one in 1965 reaching #15, and the second one reaching #43 in 1968. * For one set of "AT40 heart on great radio stations" - There was a set of 3 AT40 affiliate mentions all cities in the state of Pennsylvania - Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, and Philadelphia. * Casey even gave a brief report regarding that Americans spend on money for entertainment on recorded music, beating out movies and sporting events! * And regarding the #1 song for August 25, 1978 - "Grease" by Frankie Valli - it was the 7th. #1 song written or co-written by Barry Gibb in a calendar year for 1978. FOR THE RECORD: These were my thoughts on the August 26, 1978 AT40 episode I posted a year ago when WLS 94.7 FM Chicago first aired it on the AT40: The 70's series.

- The story for "Happy" was that it was the lone Top 40 single by the Stones in which Keith Richards - not Mick Jagger in previous songs - was credited as lead singer. - The Top 12 positions held from the previous week. That was not a record however. That record goes to the 8/19/1978 show when the Top 14 positions held from the previous week. - For the Sylvia extra, Larry Morgan mentioned a bunch of same named different acts (The Sylvia on this song was Sylvia Kirby not to be confused with the late Sylvia Robinson who hit in 1973 with "Pillow Talk") and also said "Nobody" was on its' way to #1 on the country chart. Actually, "Nobody" did hit #1 the previous week. - #1 Album: Mirage - Fleetwood Mac - #1 Country: "Fool Hearted Memory" - George Strait - #1 Soul: "Dance Floor" - Zapp

Too bad WLS Chicago chose this to air rather than the August 1971 AT40 episode for AT40: The 70's this weekend, guess it's choosing the later year choice instead of the 1970/1971 year choice.

AFTER A WEEK OFF THANKS TO AN AT40, THE 70'S EPISODE I HEARD PREVIOUSLY, THIS WEEK I'M BACK TO REVIEWING MY THOUGHTS FOR AT40: THE 70'S EPISODES, THIS WEEK WLS 94.7 FM CHOSE TO AIR THE AUGUST 30, 1975 AT40 EPISODE, AND HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS:
* BY THE NUMBERS: There are 7 British acts on this August 30, 1975 AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Spinners were first formed in 1961? 2) The Spinners' song "Games People Play" is the same title as a Joe South song (but not a remake)?, 3) The Temptations were originally called The Primes (there was also a female equivelent of The Primes called The Primettes who would later go on to become the Supremes)? 4) New Birth's "Dream Merchant" was first done by Jerry Butler? 5) The Pointer Sisters never have done any business in Houston, Texas but got help from a music agent in Oakland, California? 6) The Osmonds' "The Proud One" was first done in 1966 by Frankie Valli (FOOTNOTE: The previous week on the August 23, 1975 AT40 chart the B-side of The Osmonds' "The Proud One" was accidentally played, and SXM 70's on 7 channel last weekend, belive it or not, aired the August 23, 1975 AT40 episode, but I don't think Premiere has yet)? 7) America member Dan Peek has moral lessons towards music and commercialism? 8) David Geddes got out of the music business for 4 years to study law? 9) In the Barry Manilow song "Could It Be Magic", the mention of "Sweet Melissa" in the song related to Barry's friend Melissa Manchester? 10) Elton John has used $400,000 towards 200 pairs of glasses of his? 11) Janis Ian appeared on a local Los Angeles talk show in 1975 to talk about her songwriting? 12) James Taylor's cover version of "How Sweet It Is" was first done by Marvin Gaye and then by Junior Walker? 13) Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" is about Glen's success story in song or something like that? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the record that stayed on the chart the most weeks: "Wonderful Wonderful" by Johnny Mathis with 39 weeks ("Why Me" by Kris Kristofferson is second place with 38 weeks). * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey mentioned to give out the address to send AT40 question letters but he didn't unless Premiere edited out that address from the original! 2) Casey mentioned Austin Roberts had 3 chart records, but Austin Roberts' "Rocky" is is second top 40 hit! 3) Casey mentioned The Pointer Sisters had 5 chart records, but the Pointer Sisters had 3 Top 40 hits up to 1975! * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of the original 1965 "Help Me Rhonda" by the Beach Boys to tie in with the 1975 Johnny Rivers remake. 2) The censored version of The Isley Brothers' "Fight the Power" was played. 3) WLS 94.7 FM played the second AT40: The 70's Optional Extra of the week of "Who Loves You" by the Four Seasons.
