I missed the first 1979 optional segment for "Rainbow Connection." What did Larry say about the song and/or Kermit?
Thanks

There was only one debut this week which was Elton John's "(Sartorial Eloquence) Don't You Want To Play This Game No More" (#40 this week) and falling out of the Top 40 to make room was "Hey There Lonely Girl" by Robert John (#31 last week)

Also: Regarding this weekend's AT40: The 80's from September 20, 1980: * Does Premiere have a grudge against "Wooden Heart" and/or "Michael"? Both didn't even end up in OPTIONAL EXTRA status. * The September 20, 1980 is only the second time in AT40 history there was only 1 debut in the Top 40 (The first was August 28, 1976 when "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine was the only Top 40 entry but only stayed one week. The next time there would be only 1 top 40 debut on AT40 was on October 19, 1985 when the only Top 40 deubt was "Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister (Has AT40: The 80's ever aired this AT40 episode in the past?), other AT40 1970-1995 era charts I remember with only 1 debut in the Top 40 were on the AT40 episodes of January 9, 1988 ("Just Like Heaven" by The Cure entering at #40 for just 1 week, that week was guest hosted by Charlie Van Dyke in his last few guest hosting for Casey Kasem gigs before the August 1988 Shadoe Stevens takeover); October 7, 1989 ("It's Just The Way That You Love Me" by Paula Abdul entering at #39); January 12, 1991 ("Love Makes Things Happen" by Pebbles and Babyface entering at #40, that week Matt and Gunnar Nelson guest hosted for Shadoe Stevens); June 27, 1992 ("Good Stuff" by the B-52's entering at #34); December 25, 1993 ("Choose" by Color Me Badd entering at #39); and July 16, 1994 ("Selling the Drama" by Live entering at #40 which was also at the time AT40 was withdrawn from ABC/Watermark in favor of Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 but was sold to Radio Express for foreign markets for the last 6 months of the old AT40 existance). I don't include weeks where the only debut was a song re-entry.

SCREW UP ALERT! I have heard this morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this week's AT40: The 70's episode from September 22, 1973 and the station after playing the last optional extra of the show ("Paper Roses" by Marie Osmond) the station didn't play the #2 and #1 song segment and just went at 10 AM sharp to playing Fred Winston Sunday oldies music starting with "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen - GRRRRRR! So, no thoughts on AT40 from me this week since I didn't hear a complete show (excluding first hour optional but not played 1979 AT40 shows with October-December 1978 AT40 shows in the same mix when they were 4 hours) that ended before the "Paper Roses" optional extra with the #3 song "Delta Dawn" by Helen Reddy before a national and local commercial break.
By the way, the #2 song according to my reference books was "We're an American Band" by Grand Funk and the #1 song was "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.
Also: I'm glad WLS 94.7 FM didn't play the Cheech and Chong "Basketball Jones" optional extra anyway.
Hopefully next week (rumor has it there would be another 2 show offering, and I hope in 2 weeks the first 4 hour AT40 episode from October 7, 1978 with first hour optional gets played) I hope the AT40 The 70's episode on WLS 94.7 FM gets played complete.

You could try a different station. This show airs all over the world and is pretty much on all weekend.

The interesting thing aout this show is the re-entry of Surfin' USA. Likely due to the popularity spike from the Endless Summer album out at that time

Let's hope WLS FM 94.7 Chicago airs this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode complete this Sunday morning, last weekend the AT40: The 70's episode was played without playing the last segment of the #2 and #1 songs and ended with the last OPTIONAL EXTRA of the show. This is unrelated to AT40 per se but according to a post on Facebook apparently the "True Oldies Channel" feed has been dropped from WLS-FM. Not sure if "AT40: The '70s" is affected or not. UPDATE: Here's the link. I guess it's just the weekday lineup affected so "AT40" stays for now. www.timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/chicago-media-blog/15734691/new-at-oldies-wls-fm-winston-miller

Guess what? WLS 94.7 FM Chicago aired this week's AT40: The 70's episode 3 hours complete but no optional extras played! And now here are my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's broadcast of the September 28, 1974 AT40 episode:
* The first song to kick off the episode at #40 was Reunion's "Life Is a Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) - WLS 94.7 FM Chicago still plays in occassion the WLS AM 890 variation called "Life Is a Rock (WLS Rolled Me), any other custom versions of this with "the radio" in the lyrics replaced by the name of your old school local radio station in the lyrics? * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 3 Canadian acts on this AT40 chart, and there are 2 songs related to the 1974 Surf revival - First Class' "Beach Baby" and the re-release of the 1964 Beach Boys song "Surfin' U.S.A.". Also, The #1 song "Rock Me Gently" by Andy Kim became the 26th. #1 song for 1974 and was 1 away to tie the record (It did the next week as "I Honestly Love You" by Olvia Newton John moved into the #1 spot). * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jim Stafford has a sense of humor rather than music? 2) The group Rufus comes from Chicago? 3) The singing/talking guitar in Rufus "Tell Me Something Good" is a MUSICAL VENTRILOQUIST? 4) George Martin, producer of song for the group America, produced about 50 hits for the Beatles? 5) Helen Reddy's "You And Me Against The World" features Helen's then 11 year old daughter Tracy on the record at the start and end? 6) Elton John had to wake up early to practice the piano for parties (cheaper than a cookie and a glass of milk as Casey quoted!), 7) Some of Tony Orlando and Dawn's songs like "Stepping Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight)" are called "Ragtime Rock" songs? 8) Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods' Fan Club once offered its 5,000 members to a wedding in Cincinnatti for one of its group members? 9) Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" took a big drop from #12 to #1 tying the record originally set in 1965 by Simon and Garfunkel for "The Sounds of Silence" (that record would be broken in the next month or two! Hopefully you'll find out if Premiere airs the AT40: The 70's October 26, 1974 AT40 episode on Halloween weekend possibly next month!) 10) Wolfman Jack, who is featured on the Guess Who's "Clap For The Wolfman", is best known for his gravely voice and wolf moon howls as a DJ? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the record spending the most consecutive weeks at #2: "Mona Lisa" by Nat King Cole (Believe it or not, in 1981-1982 Foreigner's "Waiting For a Girl Like You" spent 10 weeks at the #2 postition not able to knock the 10 week #1 champ "Physical" by Olivia Newton John out of the toip spot). * ALSO: Casey played drop pieces of 2 previous versions of "Never My Love" to tie in with the Blue Suede 1974 remake: The original 1967 version by the Association and the 1972 remake by the 5th. Dimension. * KEPT INTACT 1974 ORIGINAL AT40 AFFILIATE RADIO STATION I.D.'s (The final week for this format that after that Casey went back to mentioning the radio stations himself): WHLX in Charleston, South Carolina; AM 1310 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota; WIBM in Jackson, Michigan; KAMP in El Centro, California; KZFM in Corpus Christi, Texas; KUDL in Kansas City, Missouri; WDOV in Dover, Deleware; WACO in Waco, Texas; and KJR in Seattle Washington. * ALSO KEPT INTACT IN THE SHOW: 1) Plugs for the 1974 AT40 Top 10 Producers Special, 2) The AT40 Universal City, California address, and 3) A plug by Casey at the end of the AT40 episode to tune in this week on CBS' "Hawaii Five-O" for his guest star appearance (Now if only current AT40 host Ryan Seacrest could guest star in an episode of the current CBS "Hawaii Five-O" airing Monday nights, the original "Hawaii Five-O" in 1974 was airing on CBS Tuesday nights).
Now, I hope next week Premiere slates for next weekend's AT40: The 70's episode the first ever 4 hour AT40 episode from October 7, 1978 with first hour optional.
ONE FINAL NOTE: Have you heard during a few commercial breaks on AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's this week and last week the commercial for Ancestery.com featuring Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri Kasem in it? I wish Kerri Kasem could replace Larry Morgan as the opening/closing and optional extra announcer on AT40: The 70's and AT40 The 80's so it can get the Kasem family heritage in the show (But its doubtful Ryan Seacrest would leave the current AT40 so that Kerri Kasem, if not Casey's son Mike Kasem, could take over for the current AT40 CHR and Hot AC formats Ryan does even when they have no recurrent rules!)

Also in the DC area, about 20 years ago (early 1990s), the Tysons Corner shopping mall produced a commercial modeled on the song, rattling off the names of the stores with the chorus "We've got it all...at Tysons Corner" with the same melody as the Reunion hit. I wish the 1990's Tyson's Corner commercial sung to the tune of the Reunion "Life Is A Rock..." song surfaced on YouTube. Speaking of "Life Is A Rock...": * In 1987-1988 the Toronto, Ontario, Canada Amusement Park Canada's Wonderland had a jingle sung to the tune of this song. * In 1989 the McDonald's Menu Song in a commercial campaign was inspired by the "Life Is A Rock..." song. * And do you think Billy Joel's 1989 #1 hit "We Didn't Start The Fire" was inspired by the "Life Is A Rock..." song?

Does anyone have any insight as to why these number ones from the fall of 74 where making these big falls? Obviously there was a drop in record sales and airplay but why so drastic?

Given that Larry Morgan was announcing by that point in 2009, when 10/3/87 last aired, this could be a straight re-run of that airing. Yes, Premiere's extras are the same too: AT40: The '80s this week features 10/3/1987 Three songs debuted this week: "Where The Streets Have No Name" - U2 "I've Been In Love Before" - Cutting Crew "Brilliant Disguise" - Bruce Springsteen Three songs fell off that week: "Who's That Girl?" - Madonna "Don't Mean Nothing" - Richard Marx "Rock Steady" - Whispers Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Through The Years" - Kenny Rogers "Lean On Me" - Club Nouveau Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Should've Known Better" - Richard Marx Hour #2: "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes Hour #3: "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" - Aerosmith Hour #4: "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" - Belinda Carlisle Oddly enough, I do not have a previous posting of this one in this thread. I remember going out that Saturday night, only catching bits and pieces of the show in my car.

The other three extras will remain in the show. Long Distance Dedications: "One Tin Soldier" - Coven "Sunshine On My Shoulders" - John Denver Archive extras "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" - B.J. Thomas "I Want You Back" - The Jackson Five "Venus" - Shocking Blue Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "I'm Every Woman" - Chaka Khan (#86; debuted) Hour #2: "Time Passages" - Al Stewart (#75) Hour #3: "Sharing The Night Together" - Dr. Hook (#48) Hour #4: "('Til) I Kissed You" - The Everly Brothers (original AT40 extra) I bet WLS 94.7 FM Chicago goes for the latter one but doesn't play the first hour. Although recently the station modified their playlist with rock leaning classic songs 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's with most Motown and soul/R&B and 1970's disco songs no longer in the playlist rotation, but I don't know with the modified format of WLS 94.7 FM Chicago as CHICAGO'S CLASSIC HITS (and they dropped the Scott Shannon True Oldies voice tracks as well) it will still carry AT40: The 70's Sunday mornings, I'll find out this Sunday morning and what AT40 The 70's episode airs. FOOTNOTE: The "Til I Kissed You" extra demoted to optional extra status is the only "AT40 Rock Fossil" extra segment according to OLDRADIOSHOWS.com
