GOOD NEWS! Despite its Chicago Classics revamp format, WLS 94.7 FM Chicago is still playing Sunday mornings AT40: The 70's (which is the only way you can hear the occassional Motown/disco/R&B song while WLS 94.7 doesn't have much in its rotation - Shade of WGCL G-98 Cleveland, huh? Where's Townsend Coleman when you need him?)
This week the station chose to air the October 7, 1978 first ever 4 hour AT40 format episode but with the optinal first hour not played and starting with Hour #2 (with the #30 song "It's a Laugh" by Daryl Hall and John Oates) but I did get to hear in it the 2 Long Distance Dedications (no short lived jingle yet), the second and third AT40 Archives segments (no intro music notes yet), and the "You Light Up My Life" extra. Although the "Rock Fossil" segment of "Til I Kissed You" by the Everly Brothers was demoted to Optional Extra status and WLS 94.7 FM didn't play this extra nor the other Optional Extras. And was this at least the last week for the 1977 AT40 jingle package before it switched to the 1978 jingle package? Now for my thoughts on it:
* BY THE NUMBERS: There are 5 movie songs on the AT40 chart And there was a song on this chart with all numbers called "5-7-0-5" by City Boy (prior to 1978 there were 3 other number title songs: "7-11", "20-75", and Len Barry's "1-2-3"; and in later years we had "99", "867-5309", "1999", "10-9-8", "17", "19", "853-5937", Gloria Estefan's "1-2-3", and "7".) * DID YOU KNOW: 1) According to a 1978 Newsweek article, the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, is the greatest live entertainer ever? 2) Steven Tyler of Aerosmith almost killed a deer but wrecked his sports car crashing into a tree but survived unharmed before he learned the "I BRAKE FOR ANIMALS" phrase? 3) Linda Ronstadt up to 1978 was the only female singer to have 6 albums in a row to sell 1,000,000 copies? 4) Linda Ronstadt's cover of "Back in the USA" was originally done by Chuck Berry? 5) The group Foxy comes from Florida? 6) Gerry Rafferty was a member of Stealer's Wheel? 7) Along with Linda Ronstadt in 1978, Olivia Newton-John became the only other female vocalist to have two songs in the Top 10 at the same time (Later in 1985 Madonna would do this)? and 8) Boston lead singer Tom Sholes didn't spend any dues during his working career? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the American singer with the most #1 songs in the 1970's - Stevie Wonder with 5 #1 songs.

- It's worth pointing out that this was the very first four-hour AT40 episode that aired. - The Elton/Kiki and Fleetwood Mac extras if I recall were not teased by Casey beforehand which would be the first in the span of several years (until 1982 maybe) in which Casey played a countdown extra without a prior tease. - The Debby Boone teaser was the story of her visit to a school for deaf children in Buffalo and the reception that the deaf children gave her. Interestingly enough Casey played the song immediately after telling the story. - The Everly Brothers extra was played because it was the very first rock song to include the use of tom-toms. - Among Larry Morgan's facts, "Time Passages" spent 10 years at #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and "Sharing The Night Together" was one of four Dr. Hook songs that peaked at #6 (though the other three weren't mentioned, I'm assuming the other three were "Sylvia's Mother", "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" and "Sexy Eyes"). - #1 Soul: "One Nation Under A Groove" - Funkadelic - #1 Country: Heartbreaker - #1 Album: Don't Look Back - Boston

This weekend is actually the last weekend that I work. I finish up at the park on Thursday, but I'm going out of town this next coming weekend - there's even a possibility that I may miss next weekend's show altogether. I will admit to not feeling like posting for several of these past few weekends anyway, seeing as we've now had five repeats in a row (two of which, 9-20-86 and 9-28-85, I posted on the first time around anyway). So...probably by the middle of this month, I'll be back to having weekends free (for now). :)

I bet next weekend's AT40: The 70's might be the October 16, 1976 AT40 episode where Casey Kasem's 1983-2004 rival Rick Dees (famous for his Weekly Top 40 which turns 30 years old next year) is #1 with "Disco Duck". Clarification: Next weekend's AT40: The 70's is another 2 episode offering but both of them is not 1976 as I guessed, and next weekend's AT40: The 80's will be for the 6th. week in a row a rerun show (Have they run out of AT40 1980-1988 episodes to air on AT40: The 80's?).

Well, Premiere has run out of 1988 shows this year (Shadoe Stevens was hosting then). :) And because there are two '70s shows, my weekly preview once again will be a double post. As always, the '80s show comes first. AT40: The '80s this week presents 10/17/1981. This is the third airing of this show having aired in 2007 and 2008. Five shows debuted this week: "Waiting For A Girl Like You" - Foreigner (#25) "Physical" - Olivia Newton-John (#31) "Sausalito Summernight" - Diesel (#37) "The Old Songs" - Barry Manilow (#38) "In The Dark" - Billy Squier (#39) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Slow Hand" - The Pointer Sisters (#30) "In Your Letter" - REO Speedwagon (#31) "Breaking Away" - Balance (#32) "General Hospi-Tale" - The Afternoon Delights (#33) "Theme From 'Greatest American Hero' (Believe It Or Not)" - Joey Scarbury (#35) Biggest Mover: "Oh No" - The Commodores (#27 to #39) Biggest Dropper: "The Beach Boys Medley" - The Beach Boys (#12 to #34) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Just The Two Of Us" - Grover Washington Jr. & Bill Withers "The Way We Were" - Barbra Streisand Archive extras: "Hey Jude" - The Beatles "Love Child" - Diana Ross & The Supremes Both of these extras are included. Note: "Hey Jude" - originally played at the end of Hour #1 - will be played midway through Hour #2 (after "Queen Of Hearts") Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Harden My Heart" - Quarterflash (#80; debuted) Hour #2: "No Reply At All" - Genesis (#54) Hour #3: "Young Turks" - Rod Stewart (#61; debuted) Hour #4: "Let's Groove" - Earth, Wind & Fire (#58) The '70s preview is coming soon.

What if AT40 Archives song "Hey Jude" was played at the start of Hour 2 instead of the middle of Hour #2? Too bad it would have been a surprise if it was demoted to an OPTIONAL EXTRA.

Now for my '70s post "AT40: The '70s" once again is a two-show week. First up, it's 10/16/1971. This show previously aired back in 2007. Five songs debuted this week: "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" - Marvin Gaye (#35) "You've Got To Crawl Before You Walk" - The 8th Day (#36) "Women's Love Rights" - Laura Lee (#37) "A Natural Man" - Lou Rawls (#39) "Long Ago And Far Away" - James Taylor (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" - The Dramatics (#24) "I Just Want To Celebrate" - Rare Earth (#26) "Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who (#33) "Saturday Morning Confusion" - Bobby Russell (#37) "The Breakdown (Part 1)" - Rufus Thomas (#39) Biggest Mover: "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" - Cher (#28 to #10) Biggest Dropper: "The Story In Your Eyes" - The Moody Blues (#23 to #33) Original extras: "Runaround Sue" - Dion "Don't Be Cruel" - Elvis Presley "Every Picture Tells A Story" - Rod Stewart (#1 album cut) "Don't Be Cruel" will be one of the optional extras this week. "Runaround Sue" and "Every Picture Tells A Story" will remain in the show. Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Theme From Shaft" - Isaac Hayes (#50; highest debut) Hour #2: "Don't Be Cruel" - Elvis Presley (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "Everybody's Everything" - Santana (#53; debuted) The second option is 10/13/1973. Again, it's a repeat. From 2009. Six songs debuted this week: "Space Race" - Billy Preston (#26) "We May Never Pass This Way Again" - Seals & Crofts (#31) "Ecstasy" - The Ohio Players (#34) "You're A Special Part Of Me" - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye (#35) "Jesse" - Roberta Flack (#38) "I Got A Name" - Jim Croce (#40) Six songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Saturday Night's Alright For Fightin'" - Elton John (#24) "Gypsy Man" - War (#27) "If You Want Me To Stay" - Sly & The Family Stone (#32) "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" - Al Green (#35) "Live And Let Die" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#36) "I've Got So Much To Give" - Barry White (#37) Biggest Mover: "Paper Roses" - Marie Osmond (#25 to #13) Biggest Dropper: "Theme From 'Cleopatra Jones'" - Joe Simon Featuring the Mainstreeters (#19 to #37) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Just You 'N Me" - Chicago (#43) Hour #2: "Top Of The World" - The Carpenters (#56) Hour #3: "The Most Beautiful Girl" - Charlie Rich (#53) I bet WLS 94.7 FM Chicago goes for the latter year of 1973 like they have done mostly in past 2 episode AT40: The 70's weeks (One time in July 2012 the station went with a July 15, 1972 episode rather than repeating a 1979 episode from a year ago). I'll find out on Sunday morning. What's next if Premiere does another 2 episode AT40: The 70's week, a choice of 1970 and 1974 or a choice of 1972 and 1974? How about a choice of 1970 and 1975 or a choice of 1972 and 1975? Another thing: If WLS 94.7 FM Chicago chooses 1973, I hope it airs the show complete since the last 1973 show aired by Premiere last month had WLS 94.7 FM not play the last segment with the #2 and #1 songs and had it end with the last optional extra of the episode ("Paper Roses" by Marie Osmond).

THIS WEEK FOR AT40: THE 70'S ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO...WLS chose to air the October 13, 1973 AT40 episode, and...wait for it...it was aired complete for 3 hours! Not unlike 3 weeks ago when WLS aired a 1973 AT40: The 70's episodes by ending it with the last OPTIONAL EXTRA of the show ("Paper Roses" by Marie Osmond, which is #13 on this AT40 chart for the record) and not playing the #2 and #1 song.
Now, here are my thoughts on the October 13, 1973 AT40 chart broadcast on AT40: The 70's: * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 4 family groups on this AT40 chart (The Osmonds, The Jackson 5, The DeFranco Family, and the Pointer Sisters), and there are 2 songs from the movie "Cleoptara Jones" on the chart: Joe Simon's Theme From Cleopatra Jones (Sometimes the instrumental B-side is actually played, but the vocal side was played) and Millie Jackson's "Hurts So Good". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Roberta Flack's "Jessie" was written by Janis Ian? 2) Ohio Players' "Ecstacy" has always occupied the #34 spot for a few weeks? 3) Kool and the Gang got their music career started from an unknown record producer? 4) The group Cross Country was originally The Tokens? 5) The group Stories is from New York City (But is it the original AT40 or Premiere's way to shorten and butcher "Brother Louie" like it was heard on this AT40 chart and the 1973 chart 3 weeks ago?), 6) The DeFranco Family's managers test the groups popularity before they can record? 7) The DeFranco Family's song "Heartbeat - It's a Lovebeat" was first performed on American Bandstand in July 1973? 8) The Isley Brothers first hit was "Shout" in 1959? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the years when no female solo singer made #1 on the Billboard chart (1958 and 1959), and 2) Regarding besides "Basketball Jones" about other comedy spoofs of songs to make the Top 40. Casey named three of them: A "Battle of New Orleans" parody called "Battle of Kookamonga", a "Big Bad John" parody called "Small Sad Sam", and a "Leader of The Pack" parody called "Leader of the Laundromat"; for the record though not mentioned by Casey, other comedy spoof songs included "On Top of Spaghetti" (spoofs "On Top of Old Smokey"), "The Alvin Twist" (spoofs "The Twist"), "Crazy Downtown" (spoofs "Downtown"), and "Little Old Man" (spoofs "Uptight"); and post 1973 we had 2 more comedy spoof songs make the Top 40: "Eat It" (spoofs "Beat It") and "Banned in the USA" (spoofs "Born in the USA"). * BLOOPERS: 1) The B-side of the Diana Ross/Marvin Gaye duet "You're a Special Part of Me", called "I'm Falling In Love With You", was accidentally played instead of the correct A side. 2) Casey called Marvin Gaye's other #1 as "Grapevine" instead of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". * PREDICITING THE #1 SONG FOR THE NEXT 1973 WEEK: Casey and the AT40 staff predicted the #1 song for October 20, 1973 next week would be "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman Brothers Band (They would be wrong since that next week The Rolling Stones' "Angie" moved into the #1 spot)

I found out for next weekend: * The 3rd. week in a row, AT40: The 70's will be another 2 show offering, it's not the 1976 show I predicted, but one of them will be the October 1979 show played last year but in 4 hour format with first hour optional this time. * AT40: The 80's after a 6 week rerun streak airs finally a show that hasn't run on AT40: The 80's before.

And, once again, because of this, my weekend preview will be a two-part post once again. And as always, the '80s will come first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 10/18/1986. This is the first new show from Premiere in quite some time. Three songs debuted this week: "Love Will Conquer All" - Lionel Richie (#36) "Somebody's Out There" - Triumph (#39) "The Way It Is" - Bruce Hornsby & The Range (#40) Three songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Take My Breath Away" - Berlin (#26) "Paranoimia" - The Art of Noise with Max Headroom (#35) "Twist And Shout" - The Beatles (#36) Biggest Mover (tie): "Amanda" - Boston (#27 to #15) "True Blue" - Madonna (#32 to #20) Biggest Dropper (tie): "Love Zone" - Billy Ocean (#17 to #34) "Dancing On The Ceiling" - Lionel Richie (#20 to #37) Original extras: None Long Distance Dedications: "Don't Lose My Number" - Phil Collins "Missing You" - Diana Ross Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "Stand By Me" - Ben E. King (#57) Hour #2: "Walk Like An Egyptian" - The Bangles (#55) Hour #3: "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" - Wang Chung (#46) Hour #4: "Hip To Be Square" - Huey Lewis & The News (#42; highest debut) '70s preview coming up. :)

Now for the '70s. For the third straight week (unprecedented since this began back in July), we have two '70s options for this week.

Now for the '70s. For the third straight week (unprecedented since this began back in July), we have two '70s options for this week. The first offering is from 10/24/1970 Four songs debuted this week: "Cry Me A River" - Joe Cocker (#28) "Engine Number 9"- Wilson Pickett (#29) "Gypsy Woman" - Brian Hyland (#39) "Yellow River" - Christie (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "War" - Edwin Starr (#22) "Patches" - Clarence Carter (#24) "Groovy Situation" - Gene Chandler (#26) "Joanne" - Michael Nesmith & The First National Band (#27) Biggest Mover: "Somebody's Been Sleeping" - 100 Proof Aged In Soul (#28 to #14) Biggest Dropper: "Lookin' Out My Back Door" - Creedence Clearwater Revival (#8 to #19) Original extras: "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" - The Four Aces "Black Magic Woman" - Santana "I Want To Be Wanted" - Brenda Lee "Yesterday" - The Beatles The Four Aces, Brenda Lee and Beatles extras will be played as optional extras. Santana's extra will remain in the show. And the second AT40 offering this week is from 10/20/1979. It aired just last year but this time the first hour is optional. Seven songs debuted this week: "Babe" - Styx (#26) "If You Remember Me" - Chris Thompson & Night (#32) "Broken Hearted Me" - Anne Murray (#34) "Ships" - Barry Manilow (#35) "You're Only Lonely" - J.D. Souther (#37) "Fins" - Jimmy Buffett (#38) "The Rainbow Connection" - Kermit (#40) Seven songs fell off the Top 40 this week: "Born To Be Alive" - Patrick Hernandez (#16) "The Boss" - Diana Ross (#19) "Arrow Through Me" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#29) "Rolene" - Moon Martin (#30) "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" - Robert Palmer (#34) "Driver's Seat" - Sniff 'n The Tears (#35) "Good Friend" - Mary MacGregor (#39) Biggest Mover: "Still" - The Commodores (#38 to #10) Biggest Dropper: "Don't Bring Me Down" - Electric Light Orchestra (#13 to #39) Original extras: "Surf City" - Jan & Dean Long Distance Dedications: "Precious & Few" - Climax "I'll Never Love This Way Again" - Dionne Warwick (#5 this week) Archive extras: "Island Girl" - Elton John "That's The Way (I Like It)" - K.C. & The Sunshine Band (will be played as an optional extra) "Fly Robin Fly" - The Silver Convention Premiere optional extras Hour #1: "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" - Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer (#59; highest debut) Hour #2: "That's The Way (I Like It)" - K.C. & The Sunshine Band (original AT40 Archive song) Hour #3: "Take The Long Way Home" - Supertramp (#54) Hour #4: "Cool Change" - The Little River Band (#73; debuted) What do you mean by unprecedented? I'll see what WLS 94.7 FM Chicago chose to air for AT40: The 70's this Sunday although they have always chose to air the latter year show every time 2 1970's episodes turn up. If it is the October 20, 1979 AT40 show, I won't listen, but if it is the October 24, 1970 AT40 episode, I'll listen (Was the October 31, 1970 AT40 chart episode played via Premiere last year?).

JUST IN: WLS 94.7 FM Chicago decided to go for the October 20, 1979 AT40: The 70's episode of October 20, 1979 starting with Hour #2 ("If You Remember Me" by Chris Thompson at #32). So since it was an AT40 episode I heard on AT40: The 70's a year ago, I decided to skip listening to the show and review it this week, but hopefully next weekend there may be an AT40: The 70's show that's not a 1 year ago rerun.
Of course, as always for 2 show AT40: The 70's weeks WLS 94.7 FM Chicago always chooses the later year, and this is the second time WLS 94.7 FM aired an AT40: The 70's episode that has been aired before on the station.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE OCTOBER 20, 1979 EPISODE AFTER HEARING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING: * Though the show started with the second hour as for 1979 AT40 episodes, by late 1979 the famous "Shuckatoom" theme was cut back to just at the opening of the show (which was not heard since the first hour of 1979 AT40: The 70's rebroadcasts are never played and start with the second hour) * BY THE NUMBERS: The October 20, 1979 AT40 chart had 15 groups and 17 male acts on its chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) When the Doobie Brothers are not touring, they recide in San Jose, California? 2) Bob Dylan received his HONORARY DOCTORS DECREE after he dropped out of college? 3) Michael Johnson was a member of the Chad Michael Trio (which even included a pre fame John Denver as a member)? 4) France Joli once did a benefit in Fire Island, New York? 5) The song "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac was recorded live at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and featuring the 120 Trojans of USA marching band as backup? 5) "Still" by the Commodores had a big 38 to 10 leap on the chart since "Le Freak" by Chic? 6) The Knack was once artifically put together and hyped with a "KNUKE THE KNACK" kit? 7) Herb Alpert, who had the #1 instrumental on the AT40 chart for that week with "Rise", had a long famine from the Top 40 chart since 1968 when he hit #1 with "This Guy's In Love With You"? * QUESTION LETTER: The most successful American act of the 1970's are The Carpenters (And kept intact for the 1979 AT40 question letters answered is Casey Kasem's mentioning of sending the person who sent the question letter a copy of the 1979 AT40 Yearbook). * I know the 2 Long Distance Dedications and "Surf City" extra and the AT40 Archives song of "Fly Robin Fly" were kept intact, but the other AT40 Archives song "That's The Way (I Like It)" was demoted to optional extra status and WLS 94.7 FM Chicago never plays the AT40: The 70's optional extras much. * AND ODDLY: 1) A song in the AT40 countdown - "Spooky" by Atlanta Rhythm Section - would be perfect for Halloween month in October (even October 1979). 2) Casey mentioned in his spiel about Foreigner ranked best new group from music magazines including the AT40 source - Billboard - the then 2 rivals of Billboard: Cashbox and Record World (What? No Radio and Records or Gavin Report?) 3) A plug for Casey mentioning that AT40 is heard on American Forces Network was kept intact in this AT40 episode. For the record, this was my recap of the AT40: The 70's episode of the October 20, 1979 AT40 episode a year ago when it aired.

Those 5 songs that fell off the top 40 on the 82 chart were from high spots. Higher than normal actually. That contributes to lots of moves up but nothing else dropping
