HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE NOVEMBER 17, 1979 AT40 EPISODE AIRED ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* As always with 4 hour episodes, WLS Chicago started this AT40 episode with hour #2 - The first song played was #32 - "Better Love Next Time" by Dr. Hook. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 12 English acts on this AT40 chart, and 7 female solo singers on this AT40 chart. Also: The late Donna Summer is back to back at #3 in a duet with Donna Summer called "No More Tears" and at #2 on her own with "Dim All The Lights". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Dr. Hook's 2 songs "When You're In Love With a Beautiful Woman" and "Better Love Next Time" were influenced by a #1 1960's song by Jimmy Soul called "If You Wanna Be Happy"? 2) Elton John during an interview with a magazine reporter mentioned 286 different albums? 3) Crystal Gayle is Loretta Lynn's youngest sister? 4) Anne Murray was originally considered to be a "pain in the neck" by a TV producer before she became a superstar? 5) Barry Manilow, up to 1979, has hit the Top 40 with every song released 15 times consecutively? 6) The Eagles once challenged Rolling Stone magazine to a softball game(The final score: Eagles - 13, Rolling Stone - 8)? * DROP PIECES: Casey played 2 in the episode: One was of The Byrd's #1 1965 hit "Turn, Turn, Turn" with the oldest lyrics to make the Top 40 done from the Bible's Book of Ecclesiastes, the other was to prove that in some previous 1979 AT40 episode when Casey was mentioning big hits with titles that stutter he mentioned The Bee Gees' "Jive Talking" was one of them, but some AT40 fans thought it wasn't a stutter and the drop piece of "Jive Talking" had "It's just like jive talking" rather than "J-J-J-Jive Talking" - a case of misheard lyrics! * ALSO: Casey made mention of a movie he starred in years back called "The Incredible Two Headed Transplant" (is this movie on DVD currently?) to prove in the Donna Summer/Barbra Striesand duet "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)" that two heads are better than one! 2) The 2 Long Distance Dedications of "Blinded By The Light" and "You're In My Heart" and the 1976 AT40 Archive song "Let Your Love Flow" was kept intact with another 1976 AT40 Archive song "Disco Lady" demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status but WLS 94.7 never played the "Disco Lady" OPTIONAL EXTRAS nor the other Optional Extras (including "Rapper's Delight" and the song that launched MTV in August 1981 called "Video Killed The Radio Star") in the broadcast.

The four songs that fall out are: "Swept Away" by Diana Ross (LW: 23), "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince (LW: 32), "Drive" by The Cars (LW: 34), and "Cover Me" by Bruce Springsteen (LW: 39). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WFMX. It would have been WZWZ had they not kept flip-flopping between the show and Nina Blackwood's Absolute 80s last night.
- Another one from the "Diminishing Returns" files: A #1, two Top 10s, and a Top 20 all fall out to be replaced by a pack of four led by just one Top 20.
- Speaking of which, get a load of that bottom ten - only three Top 20s in that bunch, only one of which would make it onto a year-end chart.
- Take note of both Sammy Hagar and Van Halen both appearing in this show - albeit, the latter due to Premiere including them as an extra. Only during one instance, ever, did the two naturally appear separately within the show - during the three-week run of Sammy's "Two Sides of Love" earlier in the year, and only one week of which, 9-1, has ever been aired by Premiere (back in 2010).
- Speaking of Sammy, "I Can't Drive 55" makes a very odd lead-in to the first LDD, but given that it's a "Through the Years" dedication, it's not necessarily completely inappropriate (while other odd lead-ins have been!).
- Another very early read for the #1s on Billboard's Other Charts - right after the first song in the final hour.
- "Memories" was the song name given by Jenny in her dedication letter, likely read verbatim by Casey.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Give Me One More Chance" by Exile
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Feel For You"
- #1 on the Album chart: Purple Rain by Prince & The Revolution

Not only that, the editing was too severe because of the three men who made up the Sugarhill Gang, we only heard from Wonder Mike and Big Bad Hank (poor Master Gee was the odd man out; shame shame Premiere!). BTW check out the full version of "Rapper's Delight" here. - Larry Morgan did make the obligatory mention that "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the very first music video ever played on MTV back in 1981 even though the song was recorded three years before the music video channel's launch (though I don't watch MTV much, I don't think they play a lot of videos like they used to ) - #1 Soul: Ladies Night - #1 Country: "Come With Me" - Waylon Jennings - #1 Album: The Long Run - The Eagles - #1 Disco: Fever LP - Fever

King - Stand By Me (9)* 18 10 Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (1) 17 15 Ric Ocasek - Emotion in Motion (15) 16 21 The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian (1) 15 16 Billy Idol - To Be a Lover (6) 14 06 Robert Palmer - I Didn't Mean to Turn You On (2) 13 17 Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (2) LDD: Whitney Houston "The Greatest Love of All" from Renee in Michigan to her aunt and uncle, who, in the seven years that Renee lived with them, showed her that there was more to her than her cerebral palsy12 09 Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain (9) 11 12 Toto - I'll Be Over You (11)Flashback Extra: New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle"10 13 Lionel Richie - Love Will Conquer All (9) 09 14 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way it Is (1) 08 11 Huey Lewis & The News - Hip to Be Square (3) 07 08 Peter Cetera & Amy Grant - The Next Time I Fall (1) 06 07 Cameo - Word Up (6)05 04 Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight (4) 04 05 Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name (1) 03 03 Madonna - True Blue (3)Flashback Extra: Benjamin Orr "Stay the Night", which was "eight weeks away from reaching the countdown"02 01 Boston - Amanda (1) 01 02 The Human League - Human (1)*1986 peak; hit #4 in 1961. NOTES: - It's another week where Casey didn't read the droppers...or did Premiere (accidentally?) edit them out again?
- Is it just me, or were none of the songs in the first hour shortened at all? I do know that extra "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" was cut right in half, and that "The Way it Is" was shortened (yet again! ) in the final hour, but I'm pretty sure that none of them, not even the extra, were shortened in that first hour.
- Incidentally...many of the songs played out longer than they normally would in the countdown this week. I'm thinking this eventually lead to bringing back the Top 3 recaps at the end of '86 and beginning of '87, as songs seemed to get shorter during this time.
- This is the first show where I've heard a soft '80s #12 jingle.
- Note that they played a shorter edit of "The Rain" last month on 10-18 - its first two weeks in the countdown had that shorter version played; 10-25, played last year, was the first to have the 5-minute version with spoken-word breakdown heard this week.
- There really seems to be no justification for playing "Bizarre Love Triangle" as an Extra, other than it being (as Larry Morgan points out) a still-well-known song today; note above that the song was not on the Hot 100 (nor would it chart in 1986 at all), and as Larry states, it only hit #4 on the Dance chart. Incidentally...it would be re-recorded, and re-released, in 1995 (finally charting, albeit only at #98), but the song as heard here is a bit different, missing some instrumental, than that which seems to be heard more widely today. Point being: I'm thinking the widely-heard-today version is the 1995 re-recording.
- Why on earth did Casey read the #1 Jazz album this week?? Anyone know of any other week when he read a way-out-there #1 song or album like that?
- From the "Deja Vu!" files: In 2010, Premiere played shows with both of Peter Cetera's solo #1 hits...at #1. This year, it's The Human League who get the royal treatment. :)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Tasty Love" by Freddie Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "You're Still New to Me" by Marie Osmond & Paul Davis
- #1 on the Jazz chart: Tutu by Miles Davis
- #1 on the Album chart: Third Stage by Boston

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WFMX. It would have been WZWZ had they not kept flip-flopping between the show and Nina Blackwood's Absolute 80s last night.
- Another one from the "Diminishing Returns" files: A #1, two Top 10s, and a Top 20 all fall out to be replaced by a pack of four led by just one Top 20.
- Speaking of which, get a load of that bottom ten - only three Top 20s in that bunch, only one of which would make it onto a year-end chart.

While it may not have been totally inappropriate, "I Can't Drive 55" doesn't seem right as a lead-in for a serious LDD, even if it wasn't about someone dying. Apparently there were many such questionable lead-ins to LDD's in the mid-80s, as Casey made all too clear the following year. For the other dedication, the AT40 staff may have recontacted the letter writer to make clear she wanted to hear "The Way We Were"; it's easy to think "Memories" was the actual title.

- #1 on the Country chart: "You're Still New to Me" by Marie Osmond & Paul Davis
- #1 on the Jazz chart: Tutu by Miles Davis
- #1 on the Album chart: Third Stage by Boston
Does Premiere have a grudge against "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby?

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE NOVEMBER 29, 1975 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
*This was from the first month where the 1975-1984 "Shuckatoom" theme was played at the start of the show. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 4 remakes on this AT40 chart, and there are 12 foreign acts on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Gladys Knight and the Pips have tied the Jackson 5 at this 1975 chart episode for most top 40 hits in the 1970's by a family act? 2) David Geddes' "The Last Game Of The Season" was inspired by the songwriter's (Sterling Whipple) death of his father? 3) Barry Manilow's "I Write The Songs" was written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys? 4) Freddy Fender was once working $1.86 an hour at a Texas car wash? 5) Freddy Fender's version of "Secret Love" is a remake of a 1954 Doris Day song? 6) Up to 1975, Willie Nelson has hit the country chart 25 times? 7) Frankie Valli had 51 chart hits in total under 4 different names? 7) The Four Seasons 1960's song "Big Girls Don't Cry" was inspired by a 1930's movie? 8) KC of KC and the Sunshine Band once got his job at TK records by being a cleanup and errand boy by cleaning out ashtrays and taking out garbage? * QUESTION LETTERS: 4 of them in this episode! 1) Regarding the fastest and slowest to fall out of #1 and then fall out of the Hot 100 (Fastest - "Groovin'", "Rock Me Gently", and "Nothing From Nothing" which each spent 3 more weeks at #1 before falling off the Hot 100; Slowest - "Love Letters in the Sand" by Pat Boone). 2) Regarding if there was any other song and act besides "S.O.S." by ABBA to have the names read the same forwards and backwards (There wasn't any other act! So ABBA's "S.O.S." was the first and only!). 3) Regarding the act with the most Top 10 hits aside from the Beatles who were in second place (Elvis Presley with 38 top 10 hits). 4) Regarding the first Canadian artist to hit #1 on the American charts (Guy "Auld Lang Syne" Lombardo and his Royal Canadians with "It's Love, Love, Love" in 1944). * BLOOPER: Casey mentioned Freddy Fender had his 4th. consecutive chart hit when "Secret Love" was Freddy Fender's 3rd. top 40 hit! * ALSO: 1) The live version of KISS' "Rock and Roll All Nite" was played. 2) There were a few plugs kept intact for the upcoming 1975 AT40 Year End Countdown (But I wonder what year end countdown for AT40: The 70's Premiere will play when New Year's weekend arrives next month in December 2012? My guess is the 1979 AT40 Year End countdown when there were 50 songs for 1979 counted down and might be 4 hours with first hour optional). 3) The AT40 Universal City, California address was kept intact in the show. 4) WLS 94.7 FM played the first AT40 Optional Extra of the original AT40 extra demoted to Optional Extra status of Carole King's "It's Too Late" (which was from Carole King's "Tapestry" album which during that same November 29, 1975 week was spending a 243rd. week on Billboard's 200 album chart). 5) Casey mentioned that Pete Wingfield's "Eighteen with a Bullet" which the previous week was #18 with a bullet is for the November 29, 1975 week is #15 with a bullet (Quoteth Casey Kasem - "Am I making sense here?").

I know th album version of 'The Way It Is' is nearly 5 minutes. The version they played on AT40 today was around 4 minutes. That might be the length of the 45 and not an edit

I know th album version of 'The Way It Is' is nearly 5 minutes. The version they played on AT40 today was around 4 minutes. That might be the length of the 45 and not an edit There was a verse and chorus chopped out, which has happened multiple times before. On the previous '86 show (10-18) this year, however, the song was not shortened at all.

For dth1971: Last week, the book in the Bible you refer to is Ecclesiastes... And, The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant is available as a double feature with The Thing With Two Heads from Amazon, as well as on Amazon Instant Video. And re Rock and Roll All Nite, the original studio version only peaked in the 60s on the Hot 100 in the spring. The live version burst onto the chart in November at #56 and got as high as #12.

NOTES: - It's another week where Casey didn't read the droppers...or did Premiere (accidentally?) edit them out again?
I don't think Casey listed droppers that week. A rarity from 1984 onward.

It's also on You Tube, at least for now, in what appears to be the whole film (I have neither the time nor the desire to watch all of it.) That isn't the only Casey Kasem film appearance that was referred to in last week's AT40 replays. SXM played the 11/13/71 AT40, in which Casey explained his absence the previous week (his first ever from AT40) by saying that he was making a film called "That Lovin' Man Jesus", with a cast including Fabian Forte (the teen hitmaker of the late 50s and early 60s who used only his first name.) That film was apparently shelved for a while and years later was given a limited release under the title "Soul Hustler" (it's also been called "The Day the Lord Got Busted.")

I don't know if the "Soul Hustler" movie is on DVD or not. Speaking of Casey's mentioning of movie appearances, he mentioned in a December 1973 AT40 episode that a faux part of Casey's AT40 show is heard in the movie "Scarecrow", and Casey even mentioned on the December 20, 1975 AT40 episode his appearance in an ABC made for TV movie called "Mr. and Mrs. and the Bandstand Murders". But I bet Casey didn't mention his faux AT40 show voice cameo for the 1984 "Ghostbusters" movie in a 1984 AT40 episode when Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" was on the AT40 chart.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE DECEMBER 1, 1973 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MONRING:
* The first of 3 debuts of the week - Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally?" doesn't come until #32, with #18 being the highest of the 3 - "Time in a Bottle" by the late Jim Croce. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Tina Tuner was from a city 60 miles from Memphis, Tennessee that's so small it's not found on a Tennessee map? It's Nutbush, Tennessee (I wonder if it has in recent Tennessee maps? In 1973 the Nutbush, Tennessee population was 150)? 2) A Sonny and Cher concert at Harrah's Lake Tahoe in 1973 received about 80,000 calls in 1 day thanks to a PUBLIC RELATIONS BLURB or something like that? 3) Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" was the most played song for jukeboxes in 1973? 4) Johnnie Taylor was originally a member of 2 gospel groups originally with Sam Cooke as the lead singer - The Q-C's and Soulsters? 5) Between "Close To You" and the #1 AT40 song "Top Of The World" the Carpenters had 5 #2 hits? * PREDICTING THE #1 SONG FOR THE NEXT WEEK: Casey and the AT40 staff went with 3 guesses: a) "Photograph" by Ringo Starr returning to #1 b) "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John moving into #1 c) "Top Of The World" by the Carpenters remaining at #1 The result: C, the Carpenters stayed at #1 for a second week the December 8, 1973 week with "Top Of The World" (And it would be about 2 more weeks before AT40 retired the PREDICTING THE #1 SONG OF NEXT WEEK feature for good). * ALSO: 1) There were plugs intact for the upcoming 1973 AT40 Christmas countdown and (what was played on AT40 The 70's on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day weekend earlier this year around December 31, 2011/January 1, 2012) the AT40 Top 40 Songs of 1973 year end countdown. 2) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the second OPTIONAL EXTRA of "Let Me Be There" by Olivia Newton John. 3) Casey even mentioned the AT40 show appearance in the movie "Scarecrow" that a part of the AT40 show was heard in the scene where the star of the movie, Al Pacino, was calling on the telephone his ex-wife (And though not mentioned by Casey: According to the AT40/AT20 Fun and Games This Day In AT40 History fact for December 1, 1973 AT40 that instead of a real AT40 show portion it was a faux AT40 show portion done by Casey himself when he mentioned Aretha Franklin's 1968 song "The House That Jack Built" was on the AT40 chart rather than an extra or something like that, even though for real in 1968 AT40 didn't exist yet until 1970!)

I guess it wasn't until 1985 Depeche Mode began to hit the charts in America.

and "Theme From The Yellow Rose" (1984 - I forgot who sang it). * Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" was released in 1981 but didn't chart in America? I guess it wasn't until 1985 Depeche Mode began to hit the charts in America. Johnny Lee and Lane Brody sang "The Yellow Rose". Depeche Mode did chart with their 1981 debut album, "Speak and Spell", but only at #192 in Billboard. They did not make the singles chart until "People are People" in 1985.

Flashback Extra: Nicolette Larson "Lotta Love" which was at #51 that week. 11 10 Andy Gibb - (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away (9) 10 09 Dr. Hook - Sharing The Night Together (6) 09 08 Billy Joel - My Life (3) 08 07 Al Stewart - Time Passages (7) 07 06 Alicia Bridges - I Love The Nightlife (Disco 'Round) (5) 03 05 Ambrosia - How Much I Feel (3) LDD: Climax "Precious And Few" From 17-year-old Ruthie in Gulfport MS to her boyfriend Ronnie who she still loves even though he has moved 600 miles away. 05 04 Gino Vanelli - I Just Wanna Stop (4) 01 03 Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond - You Don't Bring Me Flowers (1) AT40 Flashback Extra: Carly Simon "You're So Vain" 02 02 Donna Summer - MacArthur Park (1) 04 01 Chic - Le Freak (1)
- Stations of the Week: KLFM and CKWW A breakdown of the extras: - Casey played the "Aquarius" medley to honor it as being the biggest medley ever in the history of the Pop charts. - "Tracks Of My Tears" was played as the song that has charted three times (Miracles, Johnny Rivers and Linda Ronstadt) - And ironically "Tracks Of My Tears" was played while Ronstadt was in the chart with her other Miracles remake. - "Waterloo" was played as the song that won the 1974 Eurovision contest. - "You're So Vain" was played as Casey mentioned the phenomenon as to who Carly was really singing about (speculation has ranged from Warren Beatty to Mick Jagger who sang background vocals). Aside from Dick Ebersol (NBC Sports boss who won the "You're So Vain" secret in an auction), the identity is still yet to be known. - The 5th Dimension extra was teased prior to airing and I think the Carly Simon extra was teased too. The Miracles and ABBA extras were not teased at all. - AT40 split both sides of Carole King's double-sided hit. The only other time that has happened was when the split version was played during the 1976 4th of July special (when Casey chronologically aired the #1 songs during 4th of July from 1937-'76). - #1 Soul: Le Freak - #1 Country: "On My Knees" - Charlie Rich with Janie Fricke - #1 Album: 52nd Street - Billy Joel

Al Stewart's "Time Passages" was played in the about 3 minute-ish 45/radio edit version without causing a "Year of the Cat" by being cut down to about a minute or so thanks to Premiere and/or Shannon Lynn. Maybe next week I might be in FULL THROTLE in AT40: The 70's thoughts...
