Rather than giving my thoughts this week on this week's AT40: The 70's episode from December 9, 1978 that I heard on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago this Sunday morning, it's sort of scaled down in thoughts this week ( all because the Classic Peanuts strip in the newspaper ran a Sunday December 1960 strip instead of a December 1965 strip today): Probably because Beethoven's birthday does not fall on a Thursday? www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1965/12/12

That was a Thursday in 1965, as per the strip, and a Sunday this year. I've known this since I was very young, being a lifelong Peanuts fan (lifelong meaning dating back to the 1970s.)

I just learned according to the AT40 Fun and Games forum that next weekend's AT40: The 70's episode will be a rerun of an AT40 episode I heard last year at this same December period with no other option or alternate show nor AT40 Christmas show of 1971 or 1973, looks like I will have to take the next weekend off of listening AT40: The 70's on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago because of this.

When Charis Music Group restores the shows, I'm guessing the end product is a CD-quality program. But, when I hear the shows on the radio, it's obvious they've been compressed. And, given they're not delivered to stations on CDs anymore, that's understandable. But, compressed doesn't have to mean ruined.
If anyone from Premiere monitors this forum, for the sake of preserving sound quality, please consider using a better compression method on the files you deliver to your affiliates. If it's MP3, try a higher, variable bit rate (VBR) and something slower than "Fast" compression. It might take a few minutes longer and the files might be a bit larger but, the end product will be well worth it.
I suppose it's also possible that my affiliate stations could be guilty but, since the programs sound equally bad on both of them and, because it seems there's little reason to re-compress what is likely already compressed from Premiere, it seems more likely to be Premiere's doing. After they go to all the trouble and expense of restoring the programs, I'd think they'd want to preserve the sound quality as much as it makes sense to do so.
Regardless of whether it's Premiere or the stations' fault, all of them should realize one of the greatest advantages FM has over satellite radio is the sound quality. When FM stations use crummy MP3s for their source material, they forfeit that advantage. [soapbox mode OFF]

I guarantee you that you should notice differences across-the-board - actually, I'd be shocked if you found even two that had identical sound quality. That said, with... maybe one exception that I know of, CD-quality is like a "holy grail" that stations will just be lesser than.

Compare the streams from several stations. I guarantee you that you should notice differences across-the-board - actually, I'd be shocked if you found even two that had identical sound quality. Thanks for your reply. I should have stated both of the broadcasts I mentioned are over-the-air, not streams. Certainly, if I was listening to streaming radio, the undesirable compression artifacts (e.g. the muddy or "underwater" sound of cymbals) would be expected and unavoidable. Also, just to be clear, the compression I'm talking about is data compression. I'm not talking about the old-fashioned dynamic range compression. That's a different kind of problem which I personally don't mind as much. That said, with... maybe one exception that I know of, CD-quality is like a "holy grail" that stations will just be lesser than. I wouldn't ask for CD quality; that's impossible with analog FM due to design limitations of the broadcast. However, when a station cares enough to use high-quality sources—CDs, lossless file formats such as WAV or FLAC, or even higher-quality, high-bitrate MP3s—it shows. Too many stations have chosen the cheap route, converting their music libraries to lower-quality MP3 files in order to use less disk space. The difference is plain to hear and, especially given how inexpensive disk space is these days, it's just sad. So, my point remains, if Premiere isn't doing everything within reason to deliver their programming with high-fidelity sound, they should, if for no other reason than to preserve one of the greatest advantages their FM affiliates have over satellite and Internet radio. If they're encoding MP3s with a constant bitrate, switching to a higher, variable bitrate would make a huge difference and should cost nothing. If that's more than you cared to read, I apologize. As you might have guessed by now, this is a passion of mine. :) Thanks again for the reply.

Even though this week's AT40: The 70's is rerunning the December 14, 1974 AT40 episode I heard a year ago, below were my thoughts on hit from the year before when I originally heard this: REGARDING THIS WEEK'S AT40 THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE DECEMBER 14, 1974 AT40 CHART AFTER LISTENING TO IT THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO: * This AT40 chart had all 4 former Beatles members with solo songs in the countdown: "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" by John Lennon (The lead off #40 song on this AT40 chart), "Dark Horse" by George Harrison (Debut), "Only You" by Ringo Starr, and "Junior's Farm" by Paul McCartney. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "Morning Side of the Mountain" was originally a song by Tommy Edwards twice in the 1950's? 2) Kiki Dee was the first ever white foreign artist to sing with Motown Records back in 1969? 3) Neil Diamond took an arguement with his record company 3 months to get a song released? 4) The J. Geils Band were once mentioned in some music magazine review described as "primative funk"? 5) Neil Sedaka, who was on the AT40 chart with "Laughter in the Rain", had been absent from the chart since 1963 until this time? 6) The Paul McCartney song "Junior's Farm" was named after a farm in Scotland owned by Paul himself? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the song that took the longest time to reach #1 which was at the 1974 time "Blue Tango" by Leroy Anderson (That would be surpased in later years first by "Hot Child In The City" by Nick Gilder in 1978, then "Sad Eyes" by Robert John in 1979, and then "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis in 1982.) * BLOOPER OR NOT?: Casey called the Al Green song "Sha La La Makes Me Happy" instead of "Sha La La Make Me Happy". * ALSO: 1) Casey played a piece of the original "Everlasting Love" by Robert Knight (and Casey mentioned that at the 1974 time Robert Knight was working as a chemical engineer). 2) Casey told a brief Elvis Presley Christmas story that Elvis one Christmas gave a Hollywood hitchhiker $50 rather than a ride. 3) Did you notice a snap of fingers sound twice tied into some brief story about Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby" song? 4) To tie in with the #1 song of this chart - "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas - Casey mentioned the martial arts first were created in the 1930's by a movie character played by Peter Lorre named Mr. Moto. * And kept intact were a few plugs for the upcoming 1974 AT40 Top 100 of 1974 Will next weekend's AT40: The 70's be the 1971 or 1973 AT40 Christmas countdown with or without 1 alternate AT40: The 70's episode?

The three that fall out of the survey are: "What About Me" by Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes & James Ingram (LW: #36) "Desert Moon" by Dennis DeYoung (LW: #31) and the recent #1 smash "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder (LW: #25) NOTES: - This was a pretty fun show to listen to - definitely one of the better ones all year, along with 2/7/87, 4/19/86, and 8/16/80.
- Note on "Bruce": The respective LP which it is from, Beautiful Feelings, were previously unreleased sessions from 1978 which Mercury Records mixed, compiled into an LP, and released. Rick himself had no control over the release, and, according to Wiki, even took out advertisements in the press decrying it.
- #1 Country: "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" - Anne Murray with Dave Loggins
- #1 Soul: Solid
- #1 Album: Purple Rain - Prince & The Revolution

This is true about 'Bruce'
It is somewhat difficult to obtain the track now if you don't already have it. A quick check on amazon finds that 'Beautiful Feelings' is out of print and subsequent greatest hits collections that are currently on sale at amazon does not contain the track either.

I found (but didn't download) it on iTunes, as part of an album called "The Early Sound City Sessions", which may be the original versions of the songs that later became "Beautiful Feelings" (the title song is in there as well.) But this version is apparently the original 1978 recording, not the 1984 version remixed with (then) more up to date-sounding instrumentation which Casey played.

To answer dth's question, this next weekend it'll be the 1971 Christmas countdown, regardless of whether the affiliate in question has gone Christmas or not.
As for the 80s: Per affiliate KOLA FM, next weekend it's 12/18/1982. (I am currently unable to log in to the AT40 board, which is why I am posting this here. :))

Here are this weekend's shows
"AT40: The '70s" this week features the Christmas Countdown from 12/25/1971. All that needs to be said is the three optional extras are the three songs that Casey wasn't able to play back then:

As for the '80s, this weekend's show is from 12/18/1982
Three songs debuted this week: "Heart Of The Night" - Juice Newton (#38) "Allentown" - Billy Joel (#39) "Shame On The Moon" - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (#40; Hot 100 Debut)
Three songs fell out of the Top 40 that week: "Heartlight" - Neil Diamond (#17) "Love Me Tomorrow" - Chicago (#22) "I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World)" - Donald Fagen (#26)
Biggest Mover: "Goody Two Shoes" - Adam Ant (#35 to #27) Biggest Dropper: "Heart Attack" - Olivia Newton-John (#16 to #24)
Original extras: "Come See About Me" - The Supremes
Long Distance Dedications: "Just Remember I Love You" - Firefall "Out Here On My Own" - Irene Cara
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Everybody" - Madonna (NR) Hour #2: "I Know There's Something Going On" - Frida (#58) Hour #3: "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" - Culture Club (#62) Hour #4: "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" - Sammy Hagar (#54)
Next weekend are the special year-end countdowns: For the '70s it's either the Top 80 of 1970 or the Top 100 of 1978 (depending on which one your '70s affiliate plays) and for the '80s it's the Top 100 of 1987.
Happy Holidays! :)

I know the AT40: The 70's year end countdowns for 1970 and 1978 are both 2 parters like they were in their original airings.

I just heard this morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago the December 1971 AT40 Top 40 Christmas songs countdown on AT40: The 70's. This is the first 1971 AT40 episode WLS 94.7 FM aired since May 2012 (and before the 1970-1972 years began to start being offered with alternate 1973-1978 AT40: The 70's shows which WLS always chose mostly the later year).
Anyone familiar with the promo pic for the 1971 AT40 Christmas Countdown that showed Casey with a short lived mustache? This pic is even shown in the book "AT40: The Countdown of the Century".
This countdown started from #40 ("If Every Day Was Like Christmas" by Elvis Presley) to #1 ("White Christmas" by Bing Crosby) and ended with a honorable mention of Bing Crosby's "Silent Night".
It was nice to hear rarely played pre 1971 Christmas songs like "Little Altar Boy" and "Santo Natale". I even liked the Chipmunks version of "It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas".
There were 3 songs skipped by Casey but got mentioned (shade of how from 1992 to 1994 for WPLJ New York listeners listening to Shadoe Stevens AT40 when since the station was antil rap/dance/R&B/hard rock Shadoe mentioned but not played the songs not suited for the radio station?), but were demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status, although WLS never got to play them - not even "Snoopy's Christmas" since I am a Peanuts comic strip fan!
There were a few double plays of some Christmas songs by 2 different artists.
SOME BLOOPERS AND MISCONCEPTIONS: 1) Was there a minor skip in Spike Jones' "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" that might or might not be Shannon Lynn's fault? 2) Was the Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" played a circa late 1960's-1970 re-recorded version rather than the original? 3) At the end as Larry Morgan did the end credits the AT40 1975-1984 "Shuckatoom" theme was played, but "Shuckatoom" didn't yet exist in 1971 and wouldn't exist until 4 years later first at the end of AT40 then later at the start of AT40!
ALSO: There were some kept intact plugs for the AT40 Top 40 of 1971, but next week and the following week AT40: The 70's will present 2 year end countdowns - The Top 80 of 1970 and the Top 100 of 1978 (both in 2 parts), I bet WLS 94.7 FM chooses the later year end, but not play the first hour on each of the 2 parters which run 4 hours each.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, OLD SCHOOL AT40 FANS! AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TO, LARRY MORGAN, WHO ANNOUNCES THE AT40 OPTIONAL EXTRA SEGMENTS AND AT40: THE 70's/80's OPENING CREDIT/END CREDIT BUMPERS!

Actually from what I'm told, the 1978 year-end will be two three-hour shows (same as in 2007) which means all 100 songs will be crammed into six hours the next two weeks which means you'll get the Top 100 but with a lot of songs shortened from the original broadcast. Merry Christmas!

Here are this weekend's shows.
"AT40: The '70s" is back to two shows this weekend. However because they are not regular countdowns, my weekend preview will be just one post.
First, it's Part One of the Top 80 of 1970
Here are the optional extras: Hour #1: "Run Through The Jungle" - Creedence Clearwater Revival (original AT40 extra; was played as B-side of "Up Around The Bend" at #73) Hour #2: "Get Up I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine (Parts 1 & 2)" - James Brown Hour #3: "I Think I Love You" - The Partridge Family
Then, it's Part One of the Top 100 of 1978. Just as it was when it first aired back in 2007, it will be two three-hour shows instead of two four-hour shows which means many of the songs will be severely edited so they can all fit.
Here are the optional extras: Hour #1: "MacArthur Park" - Donna Summer Hour #2: "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" - Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond Hour #3: "Le Freak" - Chic
And "AT40: The '80s" features Part One of the Top 100 of 1987.
Here are the optional extras: Hour #1: "Paper In Fire" - John Cougar Mellencamp Hour #2: "We're Ready" - Boston Hour #3: "Let's Go" - Wang Chung Hour #4: "Touch Of Grey" - The Grateful Dead
