Darryl, were you able to listen to AT40 on WLS today? I haven't seen your comments. No, I was on vacation for New Years weekend, I will hear part 2 of the 1978 year end countdown next weekend on WLS Chicago. For the record, Sunny 105.9 in Orlando, Florida chose the 1978 year end and I heard portions of it, but I guess the biggest butchered song in my opinion had to go to the late Bob Welch's "Ebony Eyes".

Well you probably know by now that this weekend is the conclusion of the 1970, '78 and '87 year-enders so here are the optional extras for all three:
1970 Hour #1: "Someday, We'll Be Together" - Diana Ross & The Supremes Hour #2: "Tears Of A Clown" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Hour #3: "Call Me" - Aretha Franklin
BTW I apologize for not saying that James Brown's "Sex Machine" was an original 1970 Casey-voiced extra. I was unaware.
1978 Hour #1: "Wonderful Tonight" - Eric Clapton Hour #2: "Back In The U.S.A." - Linda Ronstadt Hour #3: "Right Down The Line" - Gerry Rafferty
1987 Hour #1: "The Final Countdown" - Europe Hour #2: "One Heartbeat" - Smokey Robinson Hour #3: "What's Going On" - Cyndi Lauper Hour #4: "It's A Sin" - The Pet Shop Boys
BTW Darryl, it's interesting to note that my parents are in Orlando Today.

Well, I heard this morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago the second part of the AT40 Top 100 songs of 1978 with songs #50 to #1 crammed into 3 hours rather than 4 hours with first hour optional (Yes, WLS Chicago chose the later year of 1978 over 1970).
Chart Period for this year end of 100 songs ranked are the November 1977 to November 1978
In my opinion, here are the songs that I think were butchered in this 3 hour AT40 year end broadcast I heard, do you think these are original Watermark AT40 show edits and/or Premiere edits: "The Groove Line" - Heatwave "Love Is In The Air" - John Paul Young "An Everlasting Love" - Andy Gibb (FOOTNOTE: The next week on the first AT40 show for 1979 for January 6, 1979 Mark Elliott, the guest host for Casey that January 6, 1979 week, accidentally played this song instead of Andy Gibb's "Our Love, Don't Throw It All Away") "Used Ta Be My Girl" - O-Jay's "Short People" - Randy Newman "Hot Blooded" - Foreigner "Last Dance" - Donna Summer "Take a Chance On Me" - ABBA "Jack and Jill" - Raydio "Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty "Hot Child In The City" - Nick Gilder "Dance, Dance, Dance" - Chic "If I Can't Have You" - Yvonne Elliman "With a Little Luck" - Wings "Just The Way You Are" - Billy Joel "You're The One That I Want" - John Travolta and Olivia Newton John "Three Times A Lady" - Commodores "Boogie Oogie Oogie" - A Taste of Honey "Love Is Thicker Than Water" - Andy Gibb "Baby Come Back" - Player "Kiss You All Over" - Exile "Stayin' Alive" - Bee Gees "You Light Up My Life" - Debby Boone "Night Fever" - Bee Gees And the #1 song for 1978: "Shadow Dancing" by Andy Gibb (Of course, I still think the worst butchering of a song in 1978 year end goes to Bob Welch's "Ebony Eyes").
As the countdown closed, Casey mentioned the people who helped out on AT40 at the time, one of them he mentioned was Ann Stroeker, who has worked for AT40 from 1971 up to the early 1990's Shadoe Stevens AT40 era.
Well, what do you think 2013 will bring for AT40: The 70's, maybe several more 1979 (and late in the year a 1978 show or two) 4 hour shows with first hour optional (I hope Premiere airs the Feb. 24, 1979 AT40 episode on AT40: The 70's since this is the first to feature the Top 3 recap of the previous week)? Maybe more AT40 choice shows if 1970-1972 AT40 shows are still offered with 1973-1979 AT40 shows as alternates (Unless Premiere nixes the 1970-1972 AT40 shows from the rotation like Premiere did nixing in mid 2002 1980 and 1981 shows from the AT40 Flashback series)? Maybe a surprise guest host episode or two (It offered the Dick Clark 1972 AT40 hosted episode last year)? We'll find out during 2013, even with AT40: The 80's.

- Nice to not have "The Time of My Life" shortened for a change. :) Surprising, too, given that this is the year-end survey! :o
- Synchronicity: Finishing the Chart Series - See also the 11-21 show; this show finishes the series with the two Tommy James remakes being back-to-back in the year-end survey.
- And as luck would have it, so too are the two live #1 hits!
- I'm really surprised that Premiere didn't pick the two remaining #1 songs of 1987 (from December) as extras - they did so for the 1985 and 1983 year-end shows (though for '83 there was only one left).
- I really think Premiere should have done what they did on 6-25-88, and that's put their final extra after #4 instead of before the final segment like usual. In this case it's even worse considering that right before the final commercial break is the medley of all the #1s on the year-end survey. When it comes to spoilers for the #1 song of the show...this takes the cake!
- Billboard's Top Female and Top (overall) Singles Artist of the Year: Madonna
- Top Singles Group of the Year: U2
- Top Act of the Year: Bon Jovi
- Top Singles Producer of the Year: Narada Michael Walden
- Biggest Movie Song of the Year: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"

Maybe 1988 is coming up in the next few weeks and they didn't want to play the same songs. In the case of Belinda's song, she can't come up. Following 12/26/87, her last two shows were the CVD-hosted shows that dth just mentioned.

I learned for next weekend's AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's shows on the AT40 Fun and Games forums: * The AT40: The 70's show is not a regular countdown, but a special regarding the Top 50 songs of the 1970's in 4 hours with first hour optional. * The AT40: The 80's show will feature the January 10, 1981 AT40 episode with a recap of the Top 3 songs of 1980 intact, but for the AT40 Archives of the 3 weekly #1 songs of the 1960's: One of the 3 will be demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA STATUS (first time this happened for an AT40: The 80's show ever although most 4 hour AT40 late 1978-1979 shows rebroadcast on AT40: The 70's sometimes do this to at least 1 Archive song?), the other 2 will not be played on the show.

Here are this weekend's shows
"AT40: The '70s" this week presents the Top 50 Songs of the 1970's and unlike the Top 100 of 1978 we heard from recently, it will be a full four-hour show depending on whether or not your station will air all four hours.
The optional extras are as follows Hour #1: "If You Leave Me Now" - Chicago (#1, 1976) Hour #2: "Dreams" - Fleetwood Mac (#1, 1977) Hour #3: "Rock Your Baby" - George McCrae (#1, 1974) Hour #4: "Island Girl" - Elton John (#1, 1975)
Meanwhile on "AT40: The '80s" we have a regular countdown and it's from 1/10/1981. This show previously aired back in 2008.
Four songs debuted this week:
"Seven Bridges Road" - The Eagles (#35) "Cold Love" - Donna Summer (#37) "He Can't Love You" - The Michael Stanley Band (#39) "Heartbreak Hotel" - The Jacksons (#40)
And these four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Theme From 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (Good 'Ol Boys)" - Waylon Jennings (#32) "I'm Coming Out" - Diana Ross (#34) "Girls Can Get It" - Dr. Hook (#35) "Sequel" - Harry Chapin (#38)
Biggest Mover: "9 To 5" - Dolly Parton (#33 to #26) Biggest Dropper (tie): "More Than I Can Say" - Leo Sayer (#2 to #10) "I Believe In You" - Don Williams (#24 to #32)
Original extras: None
Long Distance Dedications: "Still" - The Commodores "Lady" - Kenny Rogers (#9 this week)
Archive extras: "Surf City" - Jan & Dean "So Much In Love" - The Tymes "Fingertips Part II" - (Little) Stevie Wonder "Surf City" will actually be played as one of the optional extras. Meanwhile "So Much In Love" and "Fingertips" have been deleted altogether.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Surf City" - Jan & Dean (original AT40 Archive extra) Hour #2: "Back In Black" - AC/DC (#63) Hour #3: "Breakfast In America" - Supertramp (#62) Hour #4: "A Little In Love" - Cliff Richard (#53)

BREAKING BAD NEWS! Instead of running the Top 40 Songs of the 1970's AT40 episode, WLS 94.7 FM Chicago is airing this Sunday morning an AT40 show from last year: The AT40: The 70's episode of the January 8, 1977 AT40 countdown! JEER! GRRR! WHY WOULD WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO DO THIS??? MAYBE THEY COULDN'T DOWNLOAD THE RIGHT SHOW OR SOMETHING???
I hope next weekend WLS 94.7 FM goes back to normal on AT40: The 70's shows, and my comments on them might resume.

Not surprising, I went through 3 or 4 stations before I landed a good presentation of the 70s episode. Relying on just one station might not be 100% reliable

WLS 94.7 FM Chicago might have had a problem getting this week's AT40: The 70's episode and aired one from a year ago instead!

I meant no disrespect to the station you are trying to promote.
I said it was not surprising that your station failed. Others did too. I tried stations that historically played 4 hour 1979 shows that only played the top 37.
Stations that did play the top 50 weren't perect either. One station skipped several songs. The stream of another failed during broadcast.
However there are stations out there that played the whole top 50.
Promoting your station is your call. However, if you want to listen to the show, it is out there

By the way, how come no one has posted this past weekend's charts used for AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's?

By the way, how come no one has posted this past weekend's charts used for AT40: The 70's and AT40: The 80's? I refused to even listen to the 80s show after learning that they did the same thing with the Archives that they apparently did the first time around. Not a fan of that type of butchery. >:( The 70s...admittedly, I didn't even know what show theirs was until seeing it here. Suppose I could have tried to tune in for that one...but I didn't really feel in the mood to.

The three songs that fell out of the countdown are: "Hello Again" by The Cars (LW: 35), "All Through the Night" by Cyndi Lauper (LW: 33), and "I Can't Hold Back" by Survivor (LW: 28). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WZWZ. After they bungled Part Two of the Top 100 of 1987 a couple weeks back, they got it right this week. :)
- This is the last show to feature the same show-opening theme that was introduced the previous year. Wonder why they waited the extra week instead of making the change this week?
- Maybe Casey was thinking too much of Steve Perry's song - he said it was "falling" from 29 to 28. ;) Although, he did the same with "Loverboy".
- Sandwiched inbetween Hall & Oates hits in the countdown this week is a question asking what the most spots in a row by the same act were.
- I wouldn't normally add the subtitle to the Diana Ross song in the second LDD, but I felt it appropriate given that its writer referred to the song by that name.
- None of Premiere's extras had a musical bumper this week.
- This week's Dance & Disco #1 song is very interesting given that it hits the top after falling off of AT40.
- #1 on the Album chart: Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen
- #1 on the Country chart: "How Blue" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Operator"
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "We Are the Young" by Dan Hartman

WLS 94.7 FM Chicago got this week's AT40: The 70's episode correct this week after last week's wrong episode mishap, now here are my thoughts regarding this week's AT40: The 70's rebroadcast of the January 20, 1973 AT40 chart:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Bobby Womack was a member of a 1960's R&B group called the Valentino's? 2) Bette Midler was born in New Jersey and raised in Hawaii? 3) Chuck Berry usually performs at a park in a surburb of St. Louis, Missouri called BERRY PARK? 4) The John Fogerty/Blue Ridge Rangers version "Jambylia" was originally done by Hank Williams Sr.? 5) Abert Hammond sometimes can cover English language songs in Spanish (including some by Elvis Presley)? 6) On a 1973 Roger Miller special there was some kind of quote that went "Donna Fargo learned us English"? 7) Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together" was composed but nearly forgotten? 8) Curtis Mayfield was born in Chicago? 9) The #1 song on the AT40 chart "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon was produced by Richard Perry? * EXTRA FACT: Up to January 20, 1973, there have been 12,000 songs since 1940 to make the Billboard pop charts. * QUESTION LETTERS: There were 4 of them in this AT40 episode: 1) Regarding the act with the most Top 40 hits in 1972 (A tie between Three Dog Night and Bread with 5 Top 40 hits each in 1972), 2) Regarding the first Motown act to hit #1 on the pop charts (The Marvelettes with "Please Mr. Postman"), 3) Regarding the top 10 single that waited the most years from album release before hitting the pop chart ("Nights In White Satin" by The Moody Blues first released as an album cut in 1967 but didn't make the chart until 1972), and 4) A DOOZY OF A QUESTION: Regarding the day of the week mentioned in the most Top 40 hits (Sunday, mentioned in the titles of 20 Top 40 hits up to 1973). * BLOOPERS AND OTHER MISHAPS: 1) Casey called Hurricane Smith's "Oh Babe, What Would You Say" as "Oh Babe, What You Say", 2) When introing Johnny Rivers' "Rockin Phemoniua Boogie Woogie Flu" he said "at #7 - OH! #6!" * PREDICTING THE #1 SONG FOR NEXT WEEK IN 1973: Since the previous week Casey and the AT40 staff were correct to predict Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" was #1 for a 3rd. week, the AT40 staff made a prediction that the next 1973 week "You're So Vain" would remain at #1 for a fourth week (They would be wrong, the next week Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" moved into the #1 spot). * ALSO: 1) This was one of the first few weeks with the 1973 AT40 jingle package but the sultry or something like that background music wouldn't be added until sometime in Feb. 1973, 2) Did you like Casey mentioning in the AT40 radio station mentions a list of Texas AT40 stations in one part and a listing for spelled out radio stations names like Madison, Wisconsin's "WXXI - WIXIE" and Beaumont, Texas' "K.C."? 3) This was a rare week in 1973 when Casey found time at the end of hour #1 to mention a recap of the debuts and mention the droppers of that week's AT40 chart, and 4) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first AT40 OPTIONAL EXTRA of the episode of The Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling".

[/li][li]None of Premiere's extras had a musical bumper this week[/quote] None of the extras from last week's 1981 show (three instead of four since "Surf City" was one of the optionals) had a bumper either. Perhaps it's following the norm of their '70s partners.

Geils Band - Centerfold (1) 02 02 Foreigner - Waiting For a Girl Like You (2) 01 04 Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (1)NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WIDL.
- You'd think that a posthumous "duet" between two country superstars would be enough to send the respective song up to #1 on that chart on its own merits...not quite. Casey stated that the song had already reached #5 - turns out that that was as high as it got.
- Lots of men down there in the bottom regions of the 40...but that doesn't even compare to how many there were just weeks ago, back on 12-12-81 - that week, the entire bottom 20 were all male-voiced songs! :O It's also worth noting that there are only seven female-voiced records in the entire countdown this week.
- Casey stated that Kenny Rogers was (at that point, anyway) the biggest recording act on the singles chart so far in the 80s.
- Two of Premiere's shortening edits seem kind of wonky with repeating choruses - the ones for "Working For the Weekend" and for "Waiting For a Girl Like You" at #2. "Physical" as Last Week's #1 is the one whose edit is not so "wonky".
- #1 on the Album chart: 4 by Foreigner
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Sweetest Thing"
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Can't Go For That"

Libra: What do you mean by "WONKY"? I bet Premiere is not starting to re-edit some AT40 80's songs with repeating a looped part of a verse or line already heard in the song like the way it happened to many songs on the 1990's Shadoe Stevens AT40 shows and even the first year the 1998 Casey Kasem AT40 revival.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE JANUARY 29, 1977 AT40 CHART AIRED ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* BY THE NUMBERS: On this AT40 chart there are 4 #1 songs, 9 ballads, and 30 songs written or co-written by the artist who performs it. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Bee Gees were the #1 singles group for 1976? 2) Gene Cotton in 1974 was involved in a car crash during a rainstorm that he survived and made him lucky to be alive? 2) The Electric Light Orchestra are the world's first rock 'n roll chamber group and feature former members of the British group Move and former members of the London Symphony Orchestra? 3) ABBA's "Dancing Queen" was a #1 smash in 10 countries (and 2 and a 1/2 months later would hit #1 in the USA as well)? 4) Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis have planned a Summer replacement varity show on TV for 1977? 5) Barry Manilow's "Weekend In New England" might have been used as a Broadway musical show tune? 6) Barry Manilow was the #1 male singer of 1976? 7) Kenny Nolan once failed high school music class? 8) Aerosmith is the top album group of 1976? 9) Up to 1977, Barbra Striesand had the most top 10 albums by a female artist (Would Mariah Carey or Madonna match or beat her years later?)?, and 10) The family music group The Sylvers, originally The Little Angels, were contestants in a 1958 episode of the Groucho Marx quiz show "You Bet Your Life" (One of the questions they answered: "How many prongs are on a fork?" The answer, of course, is 4, believe it or not!)? * QUESTION LETTERS: Both were related to Billboard's album chart, of course! 1) Regarding the longest name of a recording act to hit the album chart - The Pipes and Drums of the Military Band of the Royal Scoots Dragoon Guards with the album "Amazing Grace" in 1972, 2) Regarding artists who hit #1 on the album chart but never hit the album chart again - Crazy Otto in the 1950's and Blind Faith in 1969 (But didn't Casey know another artist who hit #1 on the album chart but never hit the album chart again named The Singing Nun since he mentioned about it as the only question letter on the August 5, 1972 AT40 special NATIONAL ALBUM COUNTDOWN one time tryout episode?). * BLOOPER?: Casey called the 10CC song "The Things We Do For Love" as "The Thing We Do For Love". * ALSO: 1) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first optional extra of the week of "So In To You" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, 2) For your Al Stewart "Year of the Cat" fans who have a grudge about Premiere playing about 1 minute of the first verse and chorus of that song when it's on an early 1977 AT40 chart episode, be lucky since the first and second verse plus chorus twice plus the mid song instrumental part were played!

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE ON THE FEB. 4, 1978 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* BY THE NUMBERS: There are 5 songs from movies on this AT40 chart, and 4 songs on the AT40 chart were written or co-written by The Bee Gees, who are even at #1 on the AT40 chart with "Staying Alive". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The duo of LeBlanc and Carr have been in the past in failure groups and solo work? 2) Donna Summer is known by fans as "The first lady of love"? 3) The big 10 week #1 song by Debby Boone called "You Light Up My Life" was written by Joel Brooks, who also wrote and produced the movie of the same name? 4) John Williams has made up to 1978 a half billion dollars in composing movie themes? 5) Paul Davis in his first recording contract had to sleep in the recording studio floor and even munch on Kentucky Fried Chicken and Krystal Hamburgers? 6) Shaun Cassidy's "Hey Deannie" was written by Eric Carmen? 7) Randy "Short People" Newman was born in New Orleans (where Super Bowl 47 is about to be played tonight!)? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the recording act with the most top 40 hits in a calendar year - The Beatles with 30 Top 40 hits in the calendar year of 1964. * BLOOPER: Casey said Bill Withers' first top 40 hit "Ain't No Sunshine" came out in 1972, but that song came out in 1971! Off by 1 year! * ALSO: 1) Casey did a stretch story about the teenage fad of street singing to tie in with the Wet Willie song "Street Corner Serenade" and mentioned famous singers like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Carole King, and Barry Manilow got their starts in music by doing street singing, of course! 2) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the second AT40 Optional Extra of "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen (but not the demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status original AT40 extras of "The Way We Were" and "You'll Never Find Another One Like Mine"); 3) In one of the radio station mentions: Ever remember a San Jose, Costa Rica radio station called "RADIO TOP 12" carrying AT40 at the 1978 time?

The Beatles had 20 top 40 hits in 1964 not 30. They did however have 30 Hot 100 hits
The Bee Gees (or combinations of them) had 4 songs in the top 10 on this chart. A rarity even today
