And, here's the list of the four songs that dropped out: "Read 'Em and Weep" by Barry Manilow (LW: 29), "If I'd Been the One" by .38 Special (LW: 30), "The Sign of Fire" by The Fixx (LW: 35), and "Remember the Nights" by The Motels (LW: 36). NOTES: - Both "Stay With Me Tonight" and "99 Luftballoons" received the softer jingle.
- A Question Letter asking about the woman with the most movie songs as Top 40 hits lead into the woman with the most, with her latest - "Twist of Fate".
- After #14, there's an obituary/tribute to Jackie Wilson that, notably, is the rest of the segment (as opposed to being followed by the next song).
- Casey notes the top 13 positions being occupied by men only, also mentioning that it was something that hadn't happened since the previous April. A glance back to just last week, though, is a reminder of an even worse scenario for the entire countdown. ;)
- BOTH of the Top 2 songs were shortened this week. That's a new low for Premiere (though sadly not too surprising in the case of "Karma Chameleon"; like "The Way it Is", they LOVE to shorten that one). >:(
- After the show ended, guess what the first song was that WCRZ played? "Red Red Wine"! Why yes, it was #69 that week.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Show Her" by Ronnie Milsap
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "If You Only Knew" by Patti LaBelle

NOTES: - "Honestly" had its instrumental break included. And neither of Michael Jackson's two songs, both often popular targets for shortening, had it happen to them this week.
- Larry Morgan points out that "Spotlight" hit #31 on the R&R chart; I think this is the first time that chart has been referenced in this series.
- Seeing as I use red font for the week's Biggest Mover, I figured pink font was appropriate for the Valentine's Day Extra. ;) (OK, it's fuchsia, but pink was too pale for this background. )
- Speaking of which - Story behind "Cupid" as an Extra: Casey mentions how Sam Cooke chose Pop over Gospel, had 43 Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1966, and most notably how his voice is idolized by so many singers even then in '88.
- Interesting to have "Father Figure" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" back-to-back in that order at #12 and #11 this week...see last year's 3-12 show, where they're in that same back-to-back order, only each 10 notches higher. ;)
- #1 on the Country chart: "Tennessee Flat Top Box" by Rosanne Cash
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Some Kind of Lover" by Jody Watley
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "I Want Her"
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE FEB. 9, 1974 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* BY THE NUMBERS: There are 2 Australian acts and 5 Canadian acts on this AT40 chart. And there is the 6th. #1 for 1974 - "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) (Art) Garfunkel's "I Shall Sing" is written and produced by Van Morrison? 2) To promote Al Green radio stations were given a faux birth certificate (His weight? Heavy - rather than "NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS")? 3) Tom T. Hall originally didn't want to perform singing music at all? 4) David Essex's first love is rock music? 5) David Essex played Jesus in a London production of the musical "Godspell" and David Essex starred in the Ringo Starr movie "That'll Be The Day" (Hard to find "That'll Be The Day" on DVD unless you are in the UK)? 6) Jim Stafford was a losing contestant on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the song that spent the most weeks in the Top 40 - "Blue Tango" by Leroy Anderson; 2) Regarding the act with the most 2 sided Top 40 hits - Elvis Presley with 49 up to 1974, and he would have more 2 sided hits in the next few years. * KEPT INTACT IN THE SHOW: A few plugs for the upcoming April 1974 AT40 To 40 Most Extrodinary British Acts special, a plug for the first ever American Music Awards TV broadcast (well, this weekend it's the Grammy Awards), and a plug for a Feb. 1974 Hawaii Five-O episode Casey appears in (He would do another one later in the year). * ALSO: 1) Even though the original AT40 extra of "Fingertips Part 2" was kept intact in the show, the original AT40 extra of The Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" was omitted without being demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status (though there was a tease before the Paul McCartney song "Helen Wheels" where Casey says "we'll take note on an anniversary"; 2) As I mentioned before, Casey mentioned but not played at the #24 position Gordon Sinclair's "The Americans" in favor of Bryon MacGregor's version which was at #4; 3) Casey found time at the end of the first hour to mention the droppers where he was periodic on it until late 1983; 4) At the end, Casey mentioned he gave a thanks to Dean Martin for appearing on his variety show recently where - I'M WORRIED ABOUT THIS - HE KISSED DON RICKLES!! MUSH!!!

Did the original 2009 AT40: The 70's broadcast of the Feb. 14, 1976 AT40 episode have "Someday Will Be Together" intact - Optional Extra or not? No. In fact the optional extras are closely similar to 2009's except when Mike Kasem was the announcer back then, they played Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Cupid" as the third hour extra instead of "Let Your Love Flow".

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE FEB. 14, 1976 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* The previous week Casey was off and he thanked Los Angeles DJ Jerry Bishop for filling in for him the previous week (at the start and end of the AT40 episode oddly!) * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 6 remakes, and 8 British/English acts, plus 2 CB jargon related songs. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) "Tangerine", covered by the Salsoul Orchestra, was a remake of a #1 1942 hit for Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra? 2) Aerosmith's "Dream On" first charted on the Billboard chart in 1973 but only got to #59? 3) Queen's "Bohemian Rhasposdy" is like a 6 minute opera? 4) "Deep Purple", covered by brother-sister act Donny and Marie Osmond, was originally done by another brother-sister act Nino Tempo and April Stevens? 5) The Captain and Tennille were married on a Valentine's Day? 6) Elton John's "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own" was inspired by a dream Elton John once had? 7) Paul Simon - occupying the #1 spot on AT40 with "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" doesn't think he's an average superstar despite many good chart songs and talents? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the year when women hit #1 the most times - 9 females did it in 1973, 2) Regarding the number of married couples who hit seperately while still married - Up to 1976, there were 8 couples. * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of the first ever million selling recoded record - "Vesta Di Luca" (Did I get this title right?) by Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso, 2) Casey mentioned Larry Groce's "Junk Food Junkie" is one of his favorite songs of 1976 so far, 3) Casey told a stretch story to tie in with C.W. McCall's "Convoy" about the popularity of CB radios, 4) At the time of this 1976 show a new station to carry AT40 in South Bend, Indiana called WRBR (I wonder if ulij20/Hervard knows about this WRBR radio station even when you couldn't get access to a Chicago area AT40 station).

NOTES: - I originally missed this one back in 2009 due to having to be on the other side of the state that weekend for a conference.
- WCRZ played all four extras this week. (I think they did last week as well, but I tuned in late, so I can only verify three of those.) Incidentally, it turns out that The Bangles and Level 42 were both featured last time in 2009 as well, while the other two were "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Addicted to Love".
- Story behind "Me and Bobby McGee" as an Extra: Not much to tell - Casey tells how Janis was considered a legend even while she was alive and is now, with "Me and Bobby McGee" as her biggest hit, that she had after she died.
- Premiere really reached "out there" in picking "Pleasure and Pain" as an Extra, IMO. I could understand it if it had been featured in something very well-known today...but it wasn't.
- Sarah from the "Russians" LDD had a Russian-sounding last name, while Melanie, I believe, was American. Hmmm...
- Interesting that "Kyrie" received the softer jingle this week.
- Another fairly uncommon week where Casey gives the chart movement for the new #1 song.
- #1 on the Album chart: Promise by Sade
- #1 on the Country chart: "Makin' Up for Lost Time" by Crystal Gayle & Gary Morris
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Do Me, Baby" by Meli'sa Morgan

I just learned on the AT40/AT20 Fun and Games Forums that next week's AT40: The 70's episodes will be a 2 episode week, the first 2 episode week of an early 1970's and late 1970's episode offered to radio stations depending on demographic or something like that for the year 2013.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE AIRED ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* WLS 94.7 FM Chicago chose to go for the Feb 26, 1977 episode, and my thoughts follow: * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 24 acts who wrote or co-wrote their songs, and there are 6 female acts on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jennifer Warnes was in the original Los Angeles production of the Broadway musical "Hair"? 2) Elvis Presley is known as "The King From Tupelo" (Tupelo is his birthplace)? 3) Elton John was once a member of a group named Bluesology? 4) Tom Jones was best known for his hip shaking white soul style 1960's songs? 5) David "Don't Give Up On Us" Soul is from Chicago? 6) Leo Sayer once risked his life to perform? 7) Chaka Khan sings backup on Steven Bishop's "Save It For a Rainy Day"? 8) The group KISS was about to be in a Marvel comic book where they became superheroes and battled evil villan Doctor Doom? 9) The group ABBA once performed a sold out engagement at the Albert Royal Hall in the UK? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the most successful foreign duo on the American chart - Peter and Gordon (But would Eurythmics and Wham later be successful?) * BLOOPER: Casey called Jennifer Warnes song "Right Time of the Night" as "Right Time of Night". * ALSO: 1) Casey had a report on whatever became of Tommy Roe which in 1977 once took up horse racing and recently attempted a music comeback. 2) WLS 94.7 FM played 2 optional extras this week: The second one of the week of "Southern Nights" by Glen Campbell, and the third one of the week of the demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA status original AT40 extra of "Swearin' to God" by Frankie Valli (with Casey telling about when Frankie Valli once suffered a hearing problem!). 3) "YEAR OF THE CAT" DEPARTMENT: The first and second verse plus the instrumental bridge of the Al Stewart song of the same name was played without doing a 1 minute butchered first verse version!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE MARCH 1, 1975 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* This AT40 chart had 2 B-sides played: "Snookeroo" by Ringo Starr (B-side to "No No Song") and "I Am Love Part 2" by the Jackson 5 (B-side to "I Am Love Part 1") * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Dan Fogelberg was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois? 2) B.J. Thomas was coaxed by Burt Bacharach to record a song from the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" called "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" which B.J. didn't like? 3) David Gates was the former lead singer of Bread? 4) The 1957 song "Let The Good Times Roll" by Shirley and Lee was originally considered risque for radio but has become a rock 'n roll classic? 5) Elvis Presley while a millionaire superstar was once in the Army? 6) Minnie "Lovin' You" Riperton is from Chicago? 6) Al Martino's first chart hit was "Here In My Heart" in 1952? 7) Jerry Corbeta of the group Sugarloaf once got hit in the eye by a softball baseball at age 16? 8) The Styx song "Lady" was first released as a single in 1973 but flopped not making the Billboard Hot 100 chart? 9) The R&B group LaBelle with Patti LaBelle were the first only only African-American music act to sing at the NYC Metropolitan Opera? 10) The group Grand Funk was once panned by critics for their loud sound? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding artists who replaced themselves at #1 - Elvis Presley and the Beatles, of course! * BLOOPER: Casey mentioned Joe Cocker's "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" made the AT40 chart in 1969, but AT40 didn't exist until July 1970! * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of the original Betty Everett "You're No Good" from 1963 (which only made it to #51) to tie in with the Linda Rondstat remake version, 2) The AT40 Universal City, California address was kept intact in the show, 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first AT40 Optional Extra of the week of "Amie" by Pure Prairie League.
ONE THING TO KNOW ABOUT NEXT WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE THAT I JUST LEARNED FROM THE AT40 FUN AND GAMES FORUMS AND SOME NEW AT40: THE 70'S/80'S FACEBOOK PAGE: Next weekend's AT40: The 70's offerings will be another 2 episode offering of an early 1970's show and a late 1970's show depending on radio station demographics, but when will AT40: The 70's play for the first time in the 2013 year a 1979 AT40 episode which would be 4 hours with first hour optional since they haven't yet this year (not counting the January 5, 1980 AT40 Top 40 Hits of the 70's special aired earlier this year which WLS 94.7 FM in Chicago didn't carry!)? I hope Premiere is not planning or threatening to nix the 1979 episodes again from the AT40: The 70's series rotation like Premiere nixed from the 2001-2002 AT40 Flashback series rotation 1980 and 1981 AT40 episodes in mid 2002!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO AIRING OF AT40: THE 70'S:
* WLS as always chose the later year - March 11, 1978. * At the start of the episode in one of the rare times Casey mentioned the artists, not their songs, falling out of the Top 40 this week. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 15 male solo artists on this AT40 chart, plus 11 foreign acts, and 6 songs Bee Gees related! * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Gene Cotton survived an accident while fixing a windshield on his car (Has Casey told this story before?), 2) The group Stargard who sang the theme to the Richard Pryor movie "Which Way Is Up?" are 3 girls from Los Angeles? 3) The group Kansas had a big obsticle by their name? 4) Natalie Cole's father, Nat King Cole, was the most successful artist of the pre-rock era, and even had the first #1 album on Billboard's Album Chart on March 15, 1945 (when he was part of the King Cole Trio)? 5) The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in 1978 sold about 200,000 copies a day? 6) Andy Gibb once worked in a nightclub in Spain but didn't get paid thanks to his nationality? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding when the first Billboard Disco Chart was published - In September 1976 - The fist #1 disco song was "You Should Be Dancing" by the Bee Gees, 2) Regarding the year when no British acts hit #1 - 1972. * ALSO: 1) A then in 1978 AT40 affiliate in Salem, Illinois - WJBD - had a mention, 2) There were plugs kept intact for the upcoming AT40 Goes To The Movies special, and 3) WLS 94.7 FM played the first optional extra of the demoted to OPTIONAL EXTRA STATUS original AT40 extra of "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago.

NOTES: - Isn't it just fitting that the Devil Inside can be found in red in this week's survey?
- "Hungry Eyes" received the softer jingle.
- Casey's story on women over 40 hitting the Top 10 is told quite oddly, in that while he included Tina Turner and Starship's Grace Slick, he left out all of the #1s between them!
- "Father Figure" had the full song played. To the best of my knowledge, between Premiere's edits and the original ones, only one other Premiere-aired show has had the full song played: 1-23-88.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Face to Face" by Alabama
- #1 on the Dance chart: "I Want to Be Your Property" by Blue Mercedes
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "You Will Know" by Stevie Wonder
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael
