Will WLS go for the later year as always every time 2 AT40: The 70's shows are offered? Results to come...

FOR WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO, HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE.
WLS chose the later year as always - March 17, 1979 but not playing the first hour and starting with Hour #2 (even with a brief sponsor tag for State Farm - "Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is There") with the song to start out at #34 "I Was Made For Dancing" by Leif Garrett to kick off hour #2. So... * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 2 Canadian acts on this AT40 chart (Frank Mills and Anne Murray) and 14 disco records (Quoteth Casey Kasem - "Pop, disco, and soul cross over like you and I crossing the street!") on this AT40 chart as well. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Evelyn "Champagne" King was originally nicknamed "Bubbles" as a child? 2) In 1979 Kenny Rogers wrote and released a book about how to make it into music? 3) The group Blondie (which had the highest AT40 entry at #26 with "Heart of Glass" has nothing to do with Dagwood, Daisy the Dog, and Mr. Dithers of the Blondie comic strip fame, but relates to a blonde girl (Deborah Harry) who does the lead singing? 4) Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real" was the first ever record co-produced by a father and son? 5) Frank Mills' "Music Box Dancer" was originally for Easy Listening/Beautiful Music stations but a copy was accidentally sent to a rock station by mistake? 6) "Knock on Wood" by Amii Stewart was originally done first by Eddie Floyd and later by Otis and Carla? 7) Billy Joel had the 1978 song of the year with "Just The Way You Are"? 8) The Babys were the first recording act to perform on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" without any publicity? 9) The Dire Straits song "Sultains of Swing" is about a DIXIELAND JAZZ band? 10) A Gloria Gaynor pre-show concert helped break the losing streak of a soccer team called the New York Cosmos? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the single who's orignal version took the longest time to make the Top 40 - Paul Wynn ("Benny Bell") with "Shaving Cream" first released in 1946 but didn't make the Top 40 until 1975 thanks to help of airplay on the Dr. Demento radio show, 2) Regarding the recording act with the most singles on the chart during the 1970's - Elton John, of course! * ALSO: 1) Casey gave stories about Rock 'n Roll Shrink Eugene Landry and whatever became of the 1960's group The Mamas and the Papas, 2) I heard the intact AT40 Archives songs from 1973 of "Love Train" by The O Jays and "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence, too bad WLS 94.7 FM didn't play any OPTIONAL EXTRAS this week, not even the butchered to 2 minute version of "Rubber Biscuit" by the Blues Brothers!
FINAL NOTE: Be the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick's Day today, and in honor of our new Vatican Pope named Pope Francis who comes from Argentina in honor to what Shadoe Stevens said as the old AT40 was in its last weeks in January 1995 when he made fun of a line from the Evita Broadway musical song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina": "Don't cry for me, AT40!"

"Rubber Biscuit" was the op extra in Hour #1 so WLS couldn't play it if it wanted to (unless it aired all four hours of course) 2. The first run of AT40 ended in January 1995 not 1985.

NOTES: - First LDD writer Patrick called the song "Hang On".
- What's very interesting is that the show from the week before (3-9) started the second hour all the way in at #28, while this week, it's at #31.
- Several songs seemed to have been played out in full length, like the show was trying to make the most of every second. One notable exception is "Save a Prayer", which always seems to be cut down no matter the week.
- One song receiving a softer jingle because of its intro is odd enough. Try having that happen three times, with "Loverboy", "Relax" (!), and "California Girls"!
- From the "The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same" files: Nearly two years later (off by just a week) on 3-7-87, Charlie Van Dyke would again tell the story of the not-so-sporty REO Speedwagon as lead-in to "That Ain't Love".
- #1 on the Album chart: Make it Big by Wham!
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Nightshift"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Crazy For Your Love" by Exile
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "New Attitude"

Patrick's Day today, and in honor of our new Vatican Pope named Pope Francis who comes from Argentina in honor to what Shadoe Stevens said as the old AT40 was in its last weeks in January 1985 when he made fun of a line from the Evita Broadway musical song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina": "Don't cry for me, AT40!" 1. "Rubber Biscuit" was the op extra in Hour #1 so WLS couldn't play it if it wanted to (unless it aired all four hours of course) No, WLS started the March 17, 1979 AT40: The 70's broadcast with hour #2.

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WIDL. By pure chance, that makes three straight weeks (3-14, 3-21, and 3-28-87) that I've heard on there, all under wildly different circumstances.
- Another "low opening note gets the softer jingle", in the form of "Looking For a New Love". That's the only such one this week, though.
- From the "Casey The Mind Reader?" files: Within the past month on the AT40 Proboard, there was a thread started asking about songs that named their own peak positions. That very question was asked right here, after #36.
- There is a full story behind "Rapture" as an Extra, but the fact that it was the first song featuring rap to hit #1 is more-or-less a short version of its being there.
- A footnote for the second LDD: After two straight years of just one-win seasons, the season in question turned out to have nine wins. :)
- Casey says not to be surprised if Starship's momentum in moving from 10 to 3 takes them right to the top. Tell that to Janet Jackson, who did the exact same thing just the week before, and who gets blocked by Club Nouveau jumping right over her this week. ;)
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Looking For a New Love"
- #1 on the Country chart: "I'll Still Be Loving You" by Restless Heart
- #1 on the Album chart: Licensed to Ill by The Beastie Boys

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S BROADCAST OF THE MARCH 24, 1973 AT40 EPISODE HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* BY THE NUMBERS: There are 2 Canadian acts in the Top 10 on this AT40 chart (Anne Murray and Edward Bear) and there are 4 remakes on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jud "Daisy a Day" Strunk is known as "The hillbilly singer from New England"? 2) Alice Cooper uses confetti, fog, and bubble machines in his concerts? 3) John Denver replaced Chad Mitchell as a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio? 4) War originally had worked with Deacon Jones and Eric Burdon? 5) Seals and Crofts were originally members of the group The Champs, famous for their hit instrumental "Tequilla"? 6) Seals and Crofts had to change musical instruments because of religious beliefs? 7) Vicki Lawrence's "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" was turned down first by Sonny and Cher? 8) Dr. Hook's "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" was banned by the BBC because it might have been a 3 minute commercial for a magazine? 9) The original version of "Also Sprach 2001" done on the chart by Deodato was first done circa 1969 by the Berlin Philmartic Orchestra but only got the #90 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the record dropping out of the Hot 100 from the highest position - Tommy James and the Shondells with "Crimson and Clover" falling off the Hot 100 from #18, 2) Regarding the last time up to the 1973 AT40 episode date when a male artist had back to back #1 songs - Bobby Vinton with "Blue Velvet" and "There, I Said It Again". * BLOOPERS AND OTHER CORRECTIONS: 1) Casey mentioned Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" was at #13 when the song was at #27! 2) Casey did a correction regarding the longest time span for a song (original and remake) that instead of the 21 year span of "I'll Never Smile Again" there was a 22 year time span (original and remake) for "Maria Lena". * PREDICTING THE #1 SONG FOR NEXT WEEK: The previous 1973 week Casey and the AT40 staff were wrong that Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" would remain at #1 but "Love Train" by the O Jays moved into #1, the prediction for #1 next week would go to "Love Train", but on the next week "Killing Me Softly" rebounded back into the #1 spot for the March 31, 1973 AT40 chart (Premiere played the March 31, 1973 AT40 chart episode last year). * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of the original Bobby Freeman version of "Do You Want To Dance" to tie in with the Bette Midler remake (Too bad Casey didn't mention another remake version done by the Beach Boys in the 1960's!). 2) There were plugs intact for the upcoming 1973 AT40 special of the Top 40 Songs of the Past 5 Years. 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first optional extra of "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group.

7) Vicki Lawrence's "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" was turned down first by Sonny and Cher? To be specific, Cher was offered to sing "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" but Sonny made her turn it down.

How did you like this week's AT40: The 70's episode regarding the March 27, 1976 AT40 chart though Larry Morgan didn't mention it at the start of the show despite the mention of the State Farm sponsor?
The question letters talked about the most popular British solo act (Elton John) and the year the British occupied the most weeks at #1 (28 in 1965).
I didn't know Natalie Cole was an OLYMPIANS OF MUSIC winner in Greece in 1973, and one of the AT40 staff members still had the 1972 Raspberries cover in 1976 that still smelled fresh without a faint!
I even liked the drop piece Casey played of "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE" by James Brown with mention it was first released in 1956 but after it sold a million copies it made the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965 peeking at #95.
I am in fast mode this week because I had internet troubles all morning.

I guess the Janis Ian "At Seventeen" extra never got demoted to optional extra status like in 2008 even in 2013.
And is "Gold Dust Woman" a track from the Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" album?

Yes; "Gold Dust Woman" is the second non-single track from "Rumours" to be used as an optional extra this year ("The Chain" was first.)

^Good choice for an optional! It's a brilliant song and it's nice that someone is choosing the not-so obvious choices for extras.

Hey Darryl,
I have yet to see your recap of "AT40: The '70s" so far. Were you able to listen to WLS FM?

Hey Darryl, I have yet to see your recap of "AT40: The '70s" so far. Were you able to listen to WLS FM? No, I was on vacation this weekend and listened portions of AT40: The 70's - The April 1977 episode - on Sunny 105.9 Orlando. (Was "Sometimes" by Facts of Life butchered by Premiere in 2008 besides Olvia Newton John's "Sam"?) I even heard in the AT40 Book of Records that in 1970 CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) had 11 gold records in a calendar year. Why didn't Premiere reinstate the omitted in 2008 Janis Ian "At Seventeen" song as an Optional Extra? And I learned next weekend's AT40: The 70's will be a 2 episode weekend - either 1971 and 1974 or 1972 and 1975 (And from a hint on the AT40 Fun 'n Games Forums - One show is new to Larry Morgan though both are previously aired. One final thing: As I checked WLS 94.7 FM Chicago's facebook page it is still carrying AT40 The 70's Sundays and hasn't dropped the show yet despite being a CHICAGO CLASSIC HITS rock leaning format as we are in April 2013 (I remember in April 1994 when WXLC 102.3 FM was in modern rock leaning mode that on April 10, 1994 the old then hosted by Shadoe Stevens AT40 which has been on Sunday mornings despite the September-October 1993 WXLC switch from Top 40 to modern rock (This was the same time WHTZ Z 100 in New York City, then carrying Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 and Casey's Top 40 modified its top 40 format into modern rock leaning, of course WPLJ in New York was carrying Shadoe Stevens AT40 Sunday mornings in a personalized version with the R&B/rap/not suited for the station songs omitted but mentioned by Shadoe), was dropped for good and replaced temporary by 2 1 hour modern rock radio shows - "Modern Roots" and "Post Modern Weekly". But by late May 1994 WXLC went back to Top 40 format and I hoped the station would reinstate Shadoe Stevens AT40, but with the old AT40 about to be withdrawn in the USA in July 1994 when did WXLC replace the 2 modern rock 1 hour shows with? Not the soon to be cancelled old AT40 and not even Casey's Top 40 (which had to be heard on WBUS 99.9, Casey's AC Countdown was even on WTMX 101.9 at the time), but - RICK DEES WEEKLY TOP 40! SHUTTER! I hope WLS still carries AT40: The 70's even as it approaches its 2 year anniverary of the station carrying it without any DEJA VU or something like that.
