Hey Darryl, I have yet to see your recap of "AT40: The '70s" so far. Were you able to listen to WLS FM? No, I was on vacation this weekend and listened portions of AT40: The 70's - The April 1977 episode - on Sunny 105.9 Orlando. (Was "Sometimes" by Facts of Life butchered by Premiere in 2008 besides Olvia Newton John's "Sam"?) If you didn't hear "Rich Girl" consider yourself fortunate. Premiere edited out the lines with "b----" in them. You're a Rich Girl and you're going too far but you know it don't matter anyway. Say money but it won't get you too far get you too far. I still think Premiere deleted "Rich Girl" from the AT40 Archives from one of the 1980 shows for that reason.

But will WLS still go for the later year as always or not this time? Find out this Sunday...

Why didn't Premiere choose to air the April 12, 1975 AT40 episode instead of this one? All of the B-shows so far have been reruns. If they only have one engineer working on both shows, then they're not gonna have him do twice the work.

But I guess Premiere has never aired for AT40: The 70's yet the April 12, 1975 AT40 episode since April 19, 1975 (rerun twice with a 3rd. this weekend in B areas) and April 26, 1975 (aired in 2011).

Well, WLS 94.7 FM Chicago has AT40: The 70's on now, and the station as always chose the later episode of April 19, 1975 (with State Farm sponsor tag and no AT40 date intro by Larry Morgan at the start) which I heard a year ago instead of April 1972. So, I won't listen to it again with no recap this week Let's hope next weekend there's an AT40: The 70's I haven't heard.

Express - Express (4) 10 18 Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan - Once You Get Started (10) 28 17 Paul Anka with Odia Coates - I Don't Like To Sleep Alone (8) 21 16 Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Jackie Blue (3) 20 15 Leo Sayer - Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance) (9) 17 14 Earth, Wind and Fire - Shining Star (1) Flashback Extra: America - "Sister Golden Hair"16 13 L.O.V.E. (Love) - Al Green (13)15 12 The Blackbyrds - Walking In Rhythm (6) 07 11 LaBelle - Lady Marmalade (1) 14 10 Freddy Fender - Before The Next Teardrop Falls (1) 11 09 Hot Chocolate - Emma (8) 09 08 Barry White - What Am I Gonna Do With You (8)08 07 Sammy Johns - Chevy Van (5) 12 06 Ben E. King - Supernatural Thing (5) 23 05 Tony Orlando & Dawn - He Don't Love You (Like I Love You) (1)03 04 Ringo Starr - No No Song (3) 02 03 Minnie Riperton - Lovin' You (1) Flashback Extra: Neil Sedaka - "The Immigrant", which was bubbling under the countdown that week.06 02 B.J. Thomas - (Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song (1) 01 01 The Elton John Band - Philadelphia Freedom (1) - Elton John snaps a string of 13 consecutive songs that spent a week at #1. Coincidentally, the last song that spent more than a week at #1 was Elton John's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". - "Shaving Cream" was mentioned by Casey to be the oldest song (released 28 years ago) to ever hit the Top 40. - It's not often that the highest debuting song of the week turned out to be in its' peak position but Bobby Vinton manages to pull off the feat here. - Another unusual chart feat were two songs dropping 20 or more positions on the chart which Chicago and Phoebe Snow did. - This is the third straight '70s show to be rerun by Premiere joining the 4/8/1978 show that aired two weeks ago and the 4/10/1971 chart that aired last week. OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE APRIL 19, 1975 AT40 BROADCAST THAT I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO: * BY THE NUMBERS: 10 songs are by British acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Major Harris was a former member of the Delfonics? 2) Casey called "Harry Truman" by Chicago sort of a novelty record (I guess?), 3) "Beer Barrel Polka" was first done in 1939? 4) The B-side of Bobby Vinton's "Beer Barrel Polka" is called "Dick and Jane"? 5) Olivia Newton-John isn't really a country singer? 6) The group Pure Prairie League comes from Kentucky? 7) John Denver had other jobs like a tractor driver and a logging camp member before taking on a singing job? 8) Jimmy Castor was once a stand in for Frankie Lymon on his tours? 9) The Ozark Mountain Daredevils come from Springfield, Missouri (and no, it isn't the same Springfield town the cartoon Simpsons family live!)? 10) Leo Sayer was once worried that a band would beat him up if he performed on stage? 11) The B-side of Ringo Starr's "No No Song" is called "Snookeroo"? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the song that charted the longest without hitting #1: Johnny Mathis with his #17 song "Wonderful Wonderful" that charted for 39 weeks. * DROP PIECES PLAYED BY CASEY ON THIS EPISODE: 1) A drop piece of the original "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King was played to tie in to the 1975 John Lennon remake, 2) A drop piece of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" was played to tie into a stretch story about the biggest suicide song and the 1967 death of the hungarian composer who wrote this song (and to tie in with the 1975 suicide song by Hot Chocoalte called "Emma" a/k/a "Emmaline" (not "Emily"). These were my thoughts on the April 19, 1975 AT40: The 70's episode when I heard it a year ago for the record. Well, like I said before, why didn't Premiere chose the April 12, 1975 AT40 show to rerun instead of running for a 3rd. time the April 19, 1975 AT40 show?

Geils Band - Freeze Frame (4)03 03 Vangelis - Chariots of Fire (1) Flashback Extra: Asia "Heat of the Moment", which made the highest debut that week at #6802 02 The Go-Gos - We Got the Beat (2) 01 01 Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock & Roll (1)NOTES: - I'm told that this is the last show with the early 80s theme package (originally started in 1979); thus, last year's 4-24 show is the first one with the 1982-83 theme package.
- Casey notes both of the week's Biggest Movers, at the second one (#22).
- Note that every single record in the third hour goes up at least one notch.
- Casey welcomes new radio stations three times during the show, with a total of 14 new stations. I do believe that may be a record for any one show, and it's said to be largely spurred by ABC's purchase of Watermark in early 1982, with many places moving the show onto like-affiliated stations.
- Story behind "To Sir, With Love" as an Extra: It was the B-side to "The Boat That I Row", a song that was written for Lulu by Neil Diamond, but never got near the chart. It later became the title song to its movie, and smashed after that did.
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Clown" by Conway Twitty
- #1 on the Soul chart: "That Girl"
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack of Chariots of Fire by Vangelis

For the record, Telly "Kojak" Savalas did sing his version of the Bread hit from 1971.

I notice according to the AT40/AT20 Fun 'n Games Forums that next weekend's AT40: The 70's episodes will be another 2 show offering depending on demographics - 1 show from April 1971 which is 3 hours originally in mono and the other show will be from April 1979 which is 4 hours with first hour optional. The 1971 show was first played in 2011 and the 1979 show is a newcomer to AT40: The 70's.

Despite the new look Pulse Music Board and this past week's Boston Marathon tragedy that ended with a Friday night manhunt and capture of the surviving suspect (Going off topic: Does the Boston, Massachusetts area have a radio station carrying AT40: The 70's and/or AT40: The 80's? Kiss 108 Boston carries current Ryan Seacrest AT40, and former AT40 guest hosts Charlie Van Dyke and Ed McMann did DJ duties on Boston radio stations), here are my thoughts on this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode aired on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago:
* As always, WLS choose the later year of April 21, 1979 over 1971, and the show, a 4 hour show, started with Hour #2. First song played was at #32 - Bad Company's "Rock 'n Roll Fantasy". * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 21 groups on the chart, 17 soul hits, 5 duos, and since the April 1979 time was part the disco craze - 16 disco songs! * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Donna Summer's "Heaven Knows" was co-produced by Georgio Miroder? 2) Herb Fame of Peaches and Herb originally worked in a US Mint stacking uncut sheets of money and burning out old worn out money? 3) The Jacksons' song "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" was the first ever Jacksons song written by members of the group? 4) 2 members of Chic - Nile Rogers and Bernard Evans - can't really dance and don't even like disco? 5) The group Blondie may be considered punk rock or new wave but to them they are a rock 'n roll group? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the biggest country crossover act of the 1970's - No, not Dolly Parton nor Kenny Rogers, but...wait for it...a Tex/Mex country singer named Freddy Fender! * ALSO: 1) Casey gave a report on whatever became of the group The Turtles (originally started in 1964 as a surf group called the Crossfires) and mentioned one of its members became part of a duo called Flo and Eddie; 2) I heard the 2 AT40 Archive songs from 1973 - "Half Breed" by Cher and "Angie" by the Rolling Stones - plus the Long Distance Dedication of Chicago's "Color My World".

The CBS-owned Oldies station in Boston (WODS) used to air "AT40: The '70s" until the station changed formats and dropped the '70s show. 2. It was members Howard Kaylan (Flo) and Mark Volman (Eddie) of the Turtles that formed the duo.

- Larry Morgan was apparently off on some facts. First, in the Billy Joel extra he said "Honesty" was the second release off Billy's "52nd Street" album. Nope, that was his third (after "My Life" and "Big Shot") and he included "& The Medicine Show" to Dr. Hook's group even though they shortened the name a few years earlier. - "The Logical Song" was notably shortened (the entire second verse was removed) and I think the same went for "Hot Stuff". - #1 Soul: Disco Nights (Rock Freak) - #1 Country: "All I Ever Need Is You" - Kenny Rogers & Dottie West - #1 Disco: "Dance To Dance/Dancer" - Gino Soccio - #1 Album: Spirits Having Flown - The Bee Gees

4) 2 members of Chic - Nile Rogers and Bernard Evans - can't really dance and don't even like disco? BTW you misspelled the names of Chic's members - Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. And while I'm at it, the reason for Teddy Pendergrass' song played as an extra was Casey told the story of how Pendergrass wanted to have "Ladies' Only" concerts but discrimination laws put a kibosh to that idea. A heavily promoted "Ladies Only" concert in Philadelphia had guys account for 20% of the audience. Still, nobody left until the curtain came down.

HERE ARE MY THOUHGTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE APRIL 29, 1978 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING: * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 9 foreign acts on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Meatloaf, leading off at #40 with "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad", is 1 guy and not a group? 2) In 1978, Elton John landed in 3rd. place behind Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley for most #1 albums by a male solo artist? 3) Eddie Money's song "Baby Hold On" had a line inspired by the song "Que Sera, Sera"? 4) Brian Connerly, lead singer of the British group Sweet, was once worried he might not sing again after getting into a fight with strangers? 5) Dolly Parton almost passed up a chance to be a country/pop crossover star? 6) The 5 original members of Parliament/Funkadelic originally worked in a barber shop? 7) Olivia Newton-John had to cancel a concert tour in Japan to protest the killing of dolphins? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the #1 song that kept the most #2 songs out of the #1 position - "Theme From a Summer Place" by Percy Faith which kept 5 #2 songs from moving into #1 (That record would later be tied in 1991 when Bryan Adams 7 week #1 champ "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" did keep 5 #2 peeked songs out of #1 as well); 2) Regarding the act who took the longest span of time from first chart single to first #1 - David Rose with "The Stripper" with an 18 year span (The record would later be broken by Johnny Mathis and then Tina Turner). * BLOOPER: Casey called George Benson's song "On Broadway" as "OFF Broadway". * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of Paul McCartney's "Mull of Kyntire" which spent 7 weeks at #1 in the UK/England but never made the Hot 100 in the USA (Only to surface as the B-side of the Paul McCartney/Wings single "Girls School"), 2) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the second optional extra of Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" (with Larry Morgan mentioning it was also the same street Sherlock Holmes lives on!), and 3) To tie in with the #1 song by the Bee-Gees called "Night Fever", Casey mentioned that when he was co-host with Danny Thomas of a July 1977 5 hour St. Jude Telethon there was a $100,000 donation done by Robert Stigwood, president of RSO Records! * FINAL NOTE: For those who are still offended by the 1 minute butchered version of "Ebony Eyes" by Bob Welch played on the 2007 and 2012 airings of the AT40 Top 100 songs of 1978 countdown, on this AT40 chart episode the single 45 version was heard complete without any butchering of it!

This time around, WCRZ played all four extras (!), which is quite a surprise given the total lack of them last time. (And last time, they were: "Smuggler's Blues", "The Neverending Story", "Would I Lie to You?", and "High on You", in that order.) "Things Can Only Get Better" is, as already noted above, the week's Biggest Mover. Casey called "Somebody", which peaked at #11, a recent Top 10 hit. OOPS! ;) You couldn't ask for a more fitting lead-in to "Missing You" than the question letter revealing Marvin Gaye as the artist with the most duet partners in Top 40 hits, leading in to one of those partners with a tribute song to him...other than the story of the song's origin itself. That letter that Casey read before "We Are the World" almost acts like an unofficial third LDD for this week, even though Casey didn't even hint at calling it one. #1 on the Soul chart: "Rhythm of the Night" #1 on the Country chart: "Girls Night Out" by The Judds #1 on the Album chart: We Are the World by USA For Africa And incidentally...though Casey didn't read it, the original version of "Point of No Return", sung by the original line-up of Expose, was this week's #1 on the Dance & Disco chart. (Though we did get one in "Through the Fire", that one would've made for a real curveball Extra. )
