Incidentally, they'd go on to have the most for the entire decade.
- Casey points out that there's seven acts in the survey with two hits apiece, which is also a chart record as cited by a question letter asked in another show (but which show, I forget).
- Hmmm...looks like AT40 was on Los Angeles's KIIS-FM prior to the competition's countdown starting up (which would happen that September), and I have a suspicion that that's what led to them dropping the show. Oddly enough, it would return there the very week that Casey left AT40 in 1988.
- Casey didn't typically read off the #1 Dance songs in 1983, but I counted it for this week since he also doubled it as a lead-in to that very song at #3.
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "Jose Cuervo" by Shelly West
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Atomic Dog" by George Clinton
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Let's Dance"
Ugh...these new color tags are so un-wieldy.

Oddly enough, it would return there the very week that Casey left AT40 in 1988. For the record, Casey was heard on KIIS-FM beginning 3/29/1975 (as KKDJ) and AT40 was carried up until the fall of 1983. KIIS didn't run the ads that were attached to AT40 shows once ABC bought Watermark and that didn't sit well with them so they responded by yanking AT40 away from them and that led to the birth of "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40". It's amazing that KIIS actually added AT40 as soon as Shadoe became host (presumably KEZY in Anaheim didn't want to continue airing AT40 after Casey left the first time and somehow KIIS got AT40 back). Not sure how long the Shadoe AT40 ran on KIIS though trying to listen to the show chronologically (up to October 1989 right now) here were the shows KIIS got mentioned in so far. 8/13/1988 (new affiliate); 10/22/1988; 12/17/1988; 2/4/1989; 3/18/1989; 4/29/1989; 6/10/1989; 7/22/1989; 8/26/1989; 9/30/1989; 11/11/1989 And of course KIIS added AT40 for a third time just as Casey left again and Seacrest took over.

But in 1989-early 1990's, what station(s) in the Los Angeles area carried Casey's Top 40 to rival AT40 on KIIS-FM? And during the Casey comeback era of AT40 in 1998-2004, did KIIS-FM consider around 2002-2003 to reinstate Casey Kasem's AT40 on the station but didn't until Ryan Seacrest took Casey's place in January 2004?

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE MAY 10, 1975 AT40 CHART I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* The first song to kick off at #40 was Roger Whittaker's "The Last Farewell" (Famous for a station I.D. music bumper on WGN Channel 9 Chicago from 1978 to 1981 with its opening) and the highest debut came at #17 with "Old Days" by Chicago. * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 2 Scottish groups (AWB and Pilot), 2 weird rock acts (Alice Cooper and David Bowie), plus 16 British acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The original 1946 version of Phil Wynn's "Shaving Cream" (produced by Benny Bell) was originally under the counter at record stores? 2) Minnie Riperton's 5 singing octaves are like 65 out of 88 keys on a piano? 3) Alice Cooper's backup band is like a roll call of the UN? 4) David Bowie dressed up for concerts like a martain rock star named Ziggy Stardust? 5) Neil Sedaka's "The Immigrant" is dedicated to former Beatle John Lennon? 6) Herbie Mann has performed the jazz flute since 1966? 7) Grand Funk's music is short on music and long on volume? 8) The guitarist for the group Queen has a guitar made of old wood from a fireplace and old motorcycle springs? 9) Paul Anka wrote and produced a 1975 song by Frank Sinatra called "Anytime I'll Be There"? 10) Leo Sayer wrote "The Show Must Go On" for Three Dog Night? 11) Earth, Wind, and Fire come from Chicago? 12) B.J. Thomas once got a punctured lung in a fight with a hotel desk clerk? 13) The original title of the #1 song by Tony Orlando and Dawn called "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)" was originally called "He Would Break Your Heart" and first done by Jerry Butler? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding which of Elvis Presley's songs stayed at #1 the longest. - For single songs, it would be the 8 week #1 Elvis song "All Shook Up", but for double sided records it would be Elvis' 11 week #1 record "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog"; 2) Regarding the record that spent the most weeks at #2 without hitting #1 - In the rock era, it was "Little Darlin'" by the Diamonds which spent 8 weeks at #2, but in the pre-rock era it was Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa" which spent 11 weeks at #2 (Of course the in-betweener was the 10 week #2 song by Foreigner in 1981-1982 called "Waiting For a Girl Like You"); 3) Regarding the recent time a song was #1 pop and #1 country at the same time - Prior to 1975, it was in 1959 when "The Three Bells" by The Browns hit #1 pop and #1 country. * ALSO: 1) Casey gave a report on whatever became of Bobby Rydell (At the 1975 time Bobby was still performing at nightclubs and hotels, and Casey even played a drop piece of Bobby Rydell's "Kissing Time"), 2) The AT40 Universal City, CA. address was kept intact in the show.

Oy...you mean they responded to no longer having AT40 by launching their own countdown? Not sure how long the Shadoe AT40 ran on KIIS though trying to listen to the show chronologically (up to October 1989 right now) here were the shows KIIS got mentioned in so far. 8/13/1988 (new affiliate); 10/22/1988; 12/17/1988; 2/4/1989; 3/18/1989; 4/29/1989; 6/10/1989; 7/22/1989; 8/26/1989; 9/30/1989 And of course KIIS added AT40 for a third time just as Casey left again and Seacrest took over. They have at least one mention in either 1990 or 1991; don't remember which show off the top of my head.

^^ Yes, they didn't like having AT40 taken away, so they created their own top 40 countdown.
I've already responded to jdelachjr2002 in another forum, but in case anyone else is interested the last time KIIS was mentioned on Shadoe's AT40 was in November, 1991.

Thanks Ev for the info and I did get your note on the Fun & Games Board before I saw your post here. Appreciate it.
And Darryl as far as I know for Casey's Westwood One shows, I do know Power 106 (KPWR) aired CT40 in the beginning and supposedly dropped the show a few years later. I believe KBIG aired Casey's Countdown and they also aired AT40 when it relaunched. I think there was a rule that Casey can't air in different stations in the same market.
In Tampa, "Casey's Top 40" began on Q105 (WRBQ) which it replaced AT40 with (and I don't think Shadoe was heard from since). CT40 stayed on Q105 until they switched to Country music and 93.3 FLZ picked up CT40 instantly where it has run for 20 years in various forms from CT40 to Casey AT40 to Seacrest AT40. I think after Casey left AT40 for good, MIX 100.7 (WMTX) picked up AT20 for a couple of years before dropping it around 2008. Then Q105 (which by now is an oldies station) picked up "AT40: The '70s" from around April 2008 through early 2010.
Also I just added 11/11/1989 among the KIIS mentions as I'm listening to the show right now.

More on the KIIS/AT40 connection: I think KIIS replaced AT40 in September 1983 for the new Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 countdown show (Was Rick Dees about to start being a DJ on KIIS FM Los Angeles at the Fall 1983 time his Weekly Top 40 was launched?)
And after KIIS FM dropped Shadoe Stevens AT40 by 1992, an Orange County/Anaheim, CA station picked up the show and might have carried it up to the old AT40's demise from the USA in June-July 1994/
One final note which deals with next weekend's AT40: The 70's shows, it will be another 2 show offering with a mono show from 1971 and a show from 1977 depending on demographics, how long will Premiere do this for 1970-1972 AT40 shows with other years? Probably until Premiere desides to nix 1970-1972 shows from the AT40: The 70's rotation mix like Premiere did in 2002 nixing 1980 and 1981 shows from the AT40 Flashback rotation mix?

Dees was already employed by KIIS when AT40 left. He joined KIIS in July 1981 (and in such a short time, KIIS became America's #1 radio station) and stayed with them until February 2004 (when he was replaced by Ryan Seacrest and Seacrest's show is since syndicated across America on various Pop and Hot AC stations; 93.3 FLZ in Tampa carries "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" during the afternoons).

Funny thing is, there's a thread on the AT40 Proboard right now that's trying to figure out what its weekend start date was. Supposedly, there was an ad in the September 11, 1993 issue of Billboard advertising its 10th anniversary, but alas, that issue is not available on Google Books. That date, though, suggests that of the four weekends in September of '83, 9/3 is out - thus leaving 9/10, 9/17, and 9/24.

This show had previously aired in 2009 and 2010 Four songs debuted this week: "Slow Dancin' Don't Turn Me On" - The Addrisi Brothers (#36) "Mainstreet" - Bob Seger (#37) "Jet Airliner" - Steve Miller Band (#39) "Slowdown" - John Miles (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Tryin' To Love Two" - William Bell (#23) "Rich Girl" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#30) "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)" - Barbra Streisand (#31) "Cherry Baby" - Starz (#33) Biggest Mover (tie): "Dreams" - Fleetwood Mac (#26 to #14) "Undercover Angel" - Alan O'Day (#40 to #28) Biggest Dropper: "Don't Leave Me This Way" - Thelma Houston (#5 to #24) Original extras: "Theme From 'Shaft'" - Isaac Hayes Don't bother with this one. Premiere deleted it from their 2009 and 2010 airings. Same thing this year. Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Knowing Me, Knowing You" - Abba (#80; debuted) Hour #2: "Da Doo Ron Ron" - Shaun Cassidy (#89; debuted) Hour #3: "Looks Like We Made It" - Barry Manilow (#66) Premiere has a grudge playing the Theme From Shaft as an optional extra rather than omitting it?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* WLS as always went for the later year episode of May 14, 1977 (Though following the opening intro and State Farm sponsor tag Larry Morgan didn't mention the date before the episode started!) * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 5 disco records, 5 foreign acts, and 4 former #1's. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) John Miles was a member of the group The Alan Parsons Project? 2) Jimmy "Margaritaville" Buffett comes from Key West, Florida? 3) John Denver's father once set speed flight records on a B-12 plane? 4) John Denver's "My Sweet Lady" is a remake of a song originally done by Cliff DeYoung in 1974? 5) Joe Tex comes from Texas? 6) The Captain and Tenille, are the Captain and his mate as what Casey Kasem once called them (The Captain is married to Toni Tennille)? 7) Rose Royce was originally called Total Concience and was a back up band for groups? 8) Marvin Gaye in 1968 had the biggest Motown single in history with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (Believe it or not, it would be broken years later first by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's "Endless Love" and then Boyz II Men's "End of the Road")? 9) KC and the Sunshine Band is the biggest group to come from the state of Florida? 10) Leo Sayer (at #1 on this AT40 chart with "When I Need You") was once worried if he sang on stage a band would beat him up? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding a hit by an American group to make it to #1 the fastest - The Monkees (But aren't the Monkees a mixed American/British group since the late Davy Jones is British?) and the Platters with making it to #1 the fastest with 3 weeks (But does the 1985 #1 "We Are The World" by the one time group USA For Africa count? Did it take 3 weeks to go to #1 as well?), 2) Regarding when the Billboard Album Charts were first launched and the first #1 album on its chart - March 1945 with the first #1 album being "The King Cole Trio" by Nat King Cole. * MISCONCEPTION DEPARTMENT: 1) The B-side of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up Part 1" called "Got to Give It Up Part 2" is played instead of the correct A side. 2) A tease for an AT40 extra for the omitted from this AT40: The 70's rebroadcast (without demoting it to Optional Extra status!) regarding Issac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" was kept in the show (The tease regarding the artist - Issac Hayes, that is - had to deal with being from dirt poor to superstar rich, also: Was there an AT40 feature with a drop piece of some song called "Jamie" by Eddie Holland in the original AT40 broadcast dropped thanks to Premiere from this AT40: The 70's rebroadcast? * ALSO: 1) Speaking of Optional Extras: WLS 94.7 FM played the first 2 this week - ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (Larry Morgan mentioned there were 2 working titles for this ABBA song: "Ring It In" and "Number One, Number One") and Shaun Cassidy's "Da Doo Ron Ron", 2) Casey mentioned as a tie in to the "Theme From Rocky" about how the movie came to be (or almost) with the help of Rocky star Sylvester Stallone - The Rocky Balbola role almost went to James Cahn! And Rocky despite winning the 1976-1977 Best Picture Oscar almost won Oscars for Stallone since was nominated for best actor and best screenplay! 3) Casey did an "AT40 BOOK OF RECORDS" fact about the Motown group The Miracles taking up to the 1977 year the most consecutive run since the group first made the chart in 1959 with a minor Hot 100 hit called "Bad Girl". 4) There was a plug kept intact for the upcoming July 1977 AT40 special about the Top 40 most popular girl songs.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO THE MOTHERS OUT THERE!

NOTES: - It's the return of the alternate soft #40 jingle again. Oddly enough, the original one played when Smokey's "One Heartbeat" debuted at that same position 9 months ago (or 3 months later, depending how you look at it) on 8-15.
- Another one from the "The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same" files: Actually...two more this week. First, there's "Point of No Return" as the Hot Shot Debut on this week's Hot 100 - the original version of which was the #1 song on the Dance & Disco chart just two weeks...and two years ago, 4-27-85. That same show, two weeks ago, had "Axel F" as one of the Premiere extras. Play that song right before listening to #39 "Fascinated"...sound familiar? (Admittedly, the two have basically nothing in common...but you've gotta admit, they do sound remarkably similar.)
- Casey noted that "You Can Call Me Al" had originally peaked at #44 the year before.
- Story behind "Don't You (Forget About Me)" as an Extra: Last year, around the time that Simple Minds were gearing up for a concert in San Diego, Amnesty International contacted lead singer Jim Kerr (who's also a member of Amnesty) to ask if the band would consider handing out postcards to their audience to be filled out and mailed in, in effort to free a political prisoner in Sri Lanka. Several months later, Amnesty contacted them again, this time to inform them that 400 of these postcards were mailed in, and to thank them for their efforts in ultimately freeing the prisoner. There wasn't really a reason behind picking "Don't You (Forget About Me)" specifically - most likely it was chosen as their biggest and sole #1 hit.
- Gee - lots of big jumpers this week, though Casey does note the one that is the Biggest.
- "(I Just) Died in Your Arms", often a popular target for Premiere's own cutting...crew, instead avoids the knife this week (as well it should).
- #1 on the Album chart: The Joshua Tree by U2
- #1 on the Country chart: "The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder" by Michael Johnson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "There's Nothin' Better Than Love" by Luther Vandross & Gregory Hines

Did it take 3 weeks to go to #1 as well?), 2) A tease for an AT40 extra for the omitted from this AT40: The 70's rebroadcast (without demoting it to Optional Extra status!) regarding Issac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" was kept in the show (The tease regarding the artist - Issac Hayes, that is - had to deal with being from dirt poor to superstar rich, also: Was there an AT40 feature with a drop piece of some song called "Jamie" by Eddie Holland in the original AT40 broadcast dropped thanks to Premiere from this AT40: The 70's rebroadcast? 1. The Monkees were formed in America hence they are an American group Davy Jones' nationality aside. 2. "We Are The World" hit #1 in its' fourth week so you are off by one. 3. The way "Theme from 'Shaft'" got the Shaft (no pun intended) surprised me but the fact that the teaser was kept intact bothered me. I've said it once, I'll say it again. Sloppy editing on Premiere's part. 4. Darryl, you threw me for a loop with the "Jaime" question. I thought you were referring to its' listing in the Charis cue sheet for 5/15/1971 (the "A" show) to which I was going to reply. No, that was a mistake. It was replaced with the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album cut (and I apologize for omitting David, Stephen and Neil from my recap post) and "Jaime" would be played on the 5/29/1971 show which was heard in Chicago last year (though you likely didn't hear the song since it was an optional extra). But upon looking Pete Battistini's "AT40: '70s" book, the drop-piece of "Jaime" and the story behind it was listed on 5/14/1977. I listened to my original copy of said show to see where it was located (between #17 and #16) and then I listened to the Premiere copy where the story and the tease were deleted (at least they had the foresight to delete the tease relating to "Jaime" unlike "Shaft"). The story had to do with it being Eddie Holland's only hit but with his brother Brian and Lamont Dozier would team up to write multiple hits for Motown. Whew.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's REBROADCAST OF THE MAY 19, 1973 AT40 CHART EPISODE I HEARD THIS WEEK ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 5 British acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Perry Como's first chart hit in 1944 was "Long Ago and Far Away" (And for extra credit, I am glad Premiere handled this AT40 episode by playing the full 45 version of Perry's "And I Love You So" without playing it for a minute like in a June 1973 AT40 episode! But did Casey say the song was "And I Love HER So"?)? , 2) The John "Blue Ridge Rangers" Fogerty song "Hearts of Stone" was originally done by the Fontaine Sisters and the Charms? 3) Barbara Fairchild's "The Teddy Bear Song" was written by a St. Louis policeman named Don Earle? 4) Alice Cooper's first pet boa named Yvonne was once strangled by Alice's band? 5) The Independents are a Chicago R&B group? 6) Richard Carpenter is a better sports player than Karen? 7) The B side of Elvis Presley's "Steamroller Blues" is called "Fool"? 8) Clint Holmes flunked college that his mother suggested to take a singing career? 9) War's "The Cisco Kid" was inspired by the 1948-1956 Cisco Kid TV series which starred Duncan Renaldo in the title role? 10) Vicki Lawrence is once Mrs. Bobby Russell? 11) Elton John is the top British recording artist in the 1970's? 12) Dawn member Tony Orlando's first 2 1960's solo hits were written and produced by Carole King? 13) In 1973 Stevie Wonder (occupying #1 with "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life") joined Elvis Presley and Bobby Vinton for back to back #1's by a solo male? * PREDICTING THE #1 SONG FOR NEXT WEEK IN 1973: Though Casey and the AT40 staff were right that the Stevie Wonder "...Sunshine of My Life" song would make #1, the prediction for #1 next week was to have Stevie Wonder stay at #1 for another week. Casey and the AT40 staff would be wrong the next week since Edgar Winter's "Frankenstien" moved into #1. * ALSO: 1) There were no question letters. 2) Casey played a drop piece of the 1957 Mickey and Sylvia "Love is Strange" song to tie in with Sylvia's "Pillow Talk". 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first 2 optional extras of the week of the infamous "Money" by Pink Floyd and "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" by Jim Croce. 4) There were plugs intact for the upcoming July 1973 AT40 Top 40 Disappearing Acts special.

I learned for next weekend the AT40: The 70's offering will be 1 show, while the AT40: The 80's offering will be 2 shows - one a regular show and the other an AT40 special countdown episode.

... the infamous "Money" by Pink Floyd ... Why "infamous"? Regardless, I thought it was odd that Larry Morgan termed "Another Brick in the Wall" their "signature tune" (as if it's any less well-known than "Money"). Okay, I suppose from a purely-Billboard Hot 100 point of view, he's right. But, DSOTM has to be their signature album and "Money" is its signature tune.

Not sure if anyone touched on this before but, I noticed Larry Morgan recently changed to saying "Premiere Radio Networks present" rather than " presents". I guess the grammar police got to him. For what it's worth, I believe the old way was correct because "Premiere Radio Networks" is a singular entity.

... the infamous "Money" by Pink Floyd ... Why "infamous"? Because the b.s. word was used?
