I notice next weekend's AT40: The 70's according to the AT40 Fun and Games Forums will be 1 year later than 1975 at least, but I won't be around to listen to next weekend's AT40: The 70's on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago since I will be out of town on vacation, so the next time I will listen to AT40: The 70's on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago will be on June 28, 2013 (Will it still be a 1 show weekend or maybe another choice of 2 shows weekend by then?) Next weekend it's two shows. More on that later in the week.

jdelach: You forgot to include the date for this weekend's AT40: The 80's - August 1, 1981.
And regarding AT40: The 70's 2 show offering for this weekend, I will find out what WLS 94.7 FM plays this Sunday morning, if it is the July 31, 1971 episode, I'll listen; but if it is the July 27, 1974 episode I heard last year, I won't listen.
And when will Premiere stop offering 1970-1972 AT40 1970's episodes with later year episodes? When Premiere agrees to nix 1970-1972 AT40 episodes from the AT40: The 70's rotation?

If it's working for them, why would they stop? Obviously they started offering 2 shows a week to appeal to more stations. I think it's here to stay.

As I have seen this comment a few times before in this thread, my question is: would there be any reason why that would happen?
I know that the earlier shows are in mono and the later shows are in stereo and some stations may not elect top play the earlier shows but quite a larger number of other stations do. The flexible offering probably recognizes that.

Of the songs here in the 40, only "In the Air Tonight", "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (which, as it debuted here, was also quite possibly the newest video played all day), and "Don't Let Him Go" were the only ones to be played that day - Phil was played five times, Stevie & Tom four, and REO twice. Still on the Hot 100, but having since left the 40, Lee Ritenour's "Is it You" (#61, fell out the week before) and REO's "Take it On the Run" (#92, last week on the entire Hot 100) were also played, multiple times for each of those as well.
- The most debuts on any one show in the 1980s was eight, with four shows having that many. Of those four, this is the first to be aired.
- A rare early 80s show that starts straight at #40, with none of last week's Top 3 played before it (though 10-17, played three times already by now, is another).
- "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" clocks in at a full six minutes long.
- From the "How About That" files: Casey mentions Sheena Easton's singing the title song of For Your Eyes Only. Said title song, of course, was Premiere's first extra.
- BUT, HOW ABOUT...THIS? Between #26 and #25 is a story about Merv Griffin's success with the song "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts". Before this show started on WWIS, I was listening to the show from today's date in 1986. Between #18 and #17 is...you guessed it!
- Another one from the "Here We Go Again" files: Three years ago, WCRZ skipped the entire first segment in the final hour on 8-22-81. Now, WWIS skipped both the second Premiere extra and first segments in the third hour (21-19) here. What the hell, guys?
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Double Dutch Bus"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Dixie on My Mind" by Hank Williams, Jr.
- #1 on the Album chart: Long Distance Voyager by The Moody Blues

WLS 94.7 FM Chicago is now airing AT40: The 70's, and the station chose to rerun the July 27, 1974 AT40 episode from last year over the July 1971 AT40 episode, so no listening to it this week. Hopefully next week might be a fresh AT40: The 70's I haven't heard yet (Maybe next weekend for AT40: The 80's there could be the August 6, 1988 AT40 episode which was the last original run AT40 Casey Kasem did before Shadoe Stevens took his place).

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE JULY 27, 1974 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING: * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Up to the 1974 date, Paul McCartney had 23 #1's - 20 with the Beatles, 1 with Linda McCartney, and 2 with Wings? 2) Billy Crash Craddock started his music career in 1957 as a rock 'n roll singer but by 1974 became a country singer? 3) Paul Anka was only 15 years old when he hit with "Diana"? 4) Andy Kim's first top 40 hit in 1968 was "How Did We Get This Way"? 5) "You Won't See Me", covered by Anne Murray, was originally a track on the Beatles album "Rubber Soul"? 6) Rufus calls their music "CRUD(?!) music"? 7) Wet Willie comes from Macon, GA. (The same town where Little Richard, Otis Redding, and James Brown come from!)? 8) Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Weed" was originally written in 1963 by Don Bowman (Yes, it's the same Don Bowman who would be the first host of the AT40 spin off American Country Countdown)? 9) The Impressions originally had Jerry Butler as top label credit even after Jerry left the group? 10) Dave Loggins has never met Kenny Loggins' brother Dan? 11) John Denver in 1974 had back to back #1 songs? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the album that spent the longest on the chart - Up to the 1974 time, Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits with 490 weeks (And over a decade later Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album would be the record breaker). * KEPT INTACT IN THE SHOW VINTAGE RADIO STATION I.D.'S HEARD IN THIS 1974 AT40 EPISODE: WOKL in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; WODC in Marietta, Georgia; WSFC in Durham, North Carolina; KROL in the Rio Grande Valley; WWNA in Beckley/South West Virginia; WFNL in Green Bay, Wisconsin; WCLG in Morgantown, West Virginia; WRAR somewhere in Virginia; and a radio station in Santa Barbara, California with the dial number 152 AM (And believe it or not, 152 is also the weight in pounds Casey Kasem had in 1974!) * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey mentioned Jim Croce had 5 top 40 hits after his death, but Mr. Croce had 4, not 5! 2) Casey mentioned that Olivia Newton John was born in Wales, but she was born in England and raised in Australia! 3) Casey mentioned Three Dog Night's first record "Try a Little Tenderness" missed the Top 40, but it did make the Top 40! 4) And according to Premiere's AT40: The 70's cue sheets, was there some tape warble at the start of the show thanks to a minor poor remastering or something like that? * ALSO: 1) The address to send AT40 question letters (in Los Angeles, California - but a few months later the address moved to Universal City, California) was kept intact. 2) The bleeped version of Lamont Dozier's "Fish Ain't Bitin'" was played. 3) WLS played the first AT40 Optional Extra of "Nothing From Nothing" by Billy "The Fifth Beatle"(!) Preston. This was my recap of the July 27, 1974 AT40 episode that AT40: The 70's aired last year for the record...

For whatever reason, Premiere didn't acknowledge this fact - though perhaps that's only fitting, given that neither did Casey himself (see also below).
- An updated question letter: The top male solo singer of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was previously asked on 6-27-87, with the top male so far in the 80s as Lionel Richie. By now of course, with most of his Bad era in the can, Michael Jackson had surpassed Lionel.
- As you can see above, Premiere went with late-1988 hits for extras this week. For this week, I think it would've been nice to stick with the date as opposed to covering times they can't/won't air.
- But ugh - with a few of the show's bumpers suspiciously gone missing, it sounds like somebody at Premiere did some extra reckless work with that audio knife.
- Interesting that "Foolish Beat" received the standard jingle. And so does the somewhat mellower "I Know You're Out There Somewhere". But guess who doesn't? "Parents Just Don't Understand"!
- (Originally) shortened: "When It's Love", "Make Me Lose Control", and the second LDD "(I've Had) The Time of My Life"
- Not as many jingles this week...probably a preparation for the new segment format of Shadoe's era, which instead of 6 segments per hour (combined to 3 in re-airings), there were 4 in each of the first three hours, and 5 in the last.
- Once again, the 1988 remix of "Do You Love Me" was played.
- As has been noted, all Casey does in closing is omit the part about joining him next week in his sign-off. Turns out the "American Top 40 created by Casey Kasem and Don Bustany..." line wasn't a part of the show preparing for him leaving however, that actually got added along with the new theme package, right back on 4-4-87.
- #1 on the Album chart: Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses
- #1 on the Country chart: "Baby Blue" by George Strait
- #1 on the Dance chart: "K.I.S.S.I.N.G." by Siedah Garrett
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Off On Your Own Girl" by Al B. Sure!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE AUGUST 4, 1976 AT40 CHART I HEARD THIS MORNING ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* DID YOU KNOW: 1) Dr. John - "The Night Tripper" - got his VOODOO ROCK image when he was in prison? 2) Donny Osmond's cover of "Young Love" was originally done by Sonny James and then by Tab Hunter? 3) Manu Dibango's 45 of "Soul Makoosa" was originally came to the USA in Spring 1973 as an import on a French record label that cost only $10? 4) Charlie Rich can be sometimes called "Country Charlie Rich" and "Rock 'n Roll Charlie Rich"? 5) Lobo got his name after a dog/wolf? 6) Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" was banned by the BBC in England? 7) Bette Midler once performed in front of hundreds of naked men in a New York City Turkish bath? 8) In 1973, Bobby Picket, then as a cab driver in New York City, got word from a phone call that his 1962 song "Monster Mash" was reissued and on the charts again (Remember: 2 months until Halloween!)? 9) The studio in Switzerland were Deep Purple where to have to record an album was burned to the ground? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding if an act had the #1 record of the year 2 years in a row. Never had happened, although Casey made a prediction that Roberta Flack might be the first to do it with the #1 song of 1972 she did with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and if a #1 song Roberta did in 1973 called "Killing Me Softly With His Song" becomes the #1 song of 1973, however, it wouldn't since the #1 song of 1973 would become Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree". * PREDICTING THE #1 SONG FOR NEXT WEEK IN 1973: The previous 1973 week Casey and the AT40 staff were wrong that the Carpenters' "Yesterday Once More" would be #1 but Maureen McGovern's "The Morning After" moved into #1 that week, and for the next 1973 week Casey and the AT40 staff predicted the #1 song would be Wings' "Live and Let Die" (It wasn't, Maureen McGovern's "The Morning After" stayed at #1). * ALSO: Chalk up WLS 94.7 FM Chicago a week again that all 3 OPTIONAL EXTRAS (B.W. Stevenson's "My Maria", Grand Funk's "We're an American Band", and Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting") were played!

NOTES: - "Didn't We Almost Have it All" received the standard jingle, and Casey pointed out that the song had debuted on last week's Hot 100 at #50.
- Casey answered a Question Letter after #36 asking which solo man had had the most Top 10 hits in the rock era. He touched on this as its own story on 10-12-85 as a lead-in to second-place Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover".
- The 3s certainly do have it this week...the 3rd 3-man band in this week's survey is The Outfield, up 3 notches with their 3rd Top 40 hit!
- "Don't Disturb This Groove" and "I'd Still Say Yes" also received the standard jingle; they both received the soft one on 6-27. By now, this should be a tip-off that there was no softer jingle this week.
- "Hearts on Fire", up two notches this week, disappears from the 40 completely next week...yow.
- Any other weeks where both LDDs came from outside the USA?
- "Carrie" gets cut nearly in half once again, just like last year on 8-15. The only difference is that the cut was a slightly different chunk this time.
- No spoiler for the new #1 song this week.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "The Pleasure Principle" by Janet Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "One Promise Too Late" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE AUGUST 12, 1978 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* This episode was 2 weeks before the 1978 AT40 episode with the first ever Long Distance Dedication. * BY THE NUMBERS: There are 6 former #1 soul/R&B songs and 6 movie songs on this AT40 chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jefferson Starship once cancelled a German concert because Grace Slick was briefly a little ill that caused a riot to fans? 2) The Electric Light Orchestra once had an expensive billboard that was worth about $42,000 on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood? 3) Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" was tied with most weeks at #1 without hitting #1 with 5-6 weeks joining "Crazy Otto" by Johnny Mathis and "Ain't That a Shame" by Pat Boone (Though the record would be broken in 1981-1982 with the 10 week #2 song by Foreigner called "Waiting For a Girl Like You".)? 4) The group Toby Beau comes from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas? 5) Joe Walsh was a member of the James Gang and later the Eagles? 6) Joe Walsh's song "Life's Been Good" is heard in the movie "F.M."? 7) Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" is heard in the movie "Foul Play"? 8) Up to 1978 the Gibb family of the Bee Gees and Andy had occupied the #1 spot for 34 weeks total? 8) The Rolling Stones grossed more money for an indoor concert at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the artists to have more than one #1 record of the year - Elvis Presley and the Beatles; 2) Regarding the fastest Top 10 songs - Elvis Presley's "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck", Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater", and 3 by the Beatles - "Hey Jude", "Get Back", and "Let it Be". * ALSO: 1) Casey did a correction regarding the recent Dave Mason remake of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that it wasn't written by Phil Spector but written by some duo named Stanley and Luther. 2) Another week for WLS 94.7 FM Chicago playing all 3 OPTIONAL EXTRAS of "Summer Nights" by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, "You Needed Me" by Anne Murray, and "Come Together" by Aerosmith.

NOTES: - Casey stated that "Cruel Summer" was on the Karate Kid soundtrack - while its feature in the film was responsible for its exposure, it was in fact not on the film's soundtrack.
- Casey mentions that the third hour is brought to us by Dr. Pepper (which, as it happens, I have next to me while listening to this one). These product placements usually get edited out, but it looks like they missed one this week.
- Story behind "We Don't Talk Anymore" as an Extra: Casey gave the figures on how Cliff Richard is the most successful act on the British charts. He did mention what his American chart stats were by comparison, picking "We Don't Talk Anymore" as one of the trans-Atlantic hits that Cliff has had.
- A rare week where we get chart placement info for all four Premiere extras, though three of the four being debuts certainly helped - but then again, all four of them were debuts on 1-18-86, and I'm pretty sure they weren't all mentioned as such.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "When Doves Cry"
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack of Purple Rain
- #1 on the Country chart: "Still Losing You" by Ronnie Milsap
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "The Glamorous Life"

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO OF THE AUGUST 20, 1977 (Around the same time, a few days, Elvis Presley passed away) AT40 EPISODE:
* BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 19 groups on the chart. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Singer Mac Macanally became a fast overnight success in Alabama and Mississippi? 2) B.J. Thomas, on the AT40 chart with "Don't Worry, Baby", had his previous it the longest #1 song title "Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song"? 3) Barbra Striesant has joined Bing Crosby with hitting #1 with an Oscar winning song twice? 4) The Brothers Johnson at ages 12-14 had been warm up acts for the Supremes and Stevie Wonder? 5) Andy Gibb's "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" was written by Andy's brother Barry Gibb? 6) Maurice White at age 12 first met the members of the Emotions (occupying #1 on this AT40 chart with "Best of My Love") in Chicago in 1957? * QUESTION LETTERS: There were 4 in this AT40 episode! - 1) Regarding the most successful husband and wife recording act in chart history - Les Paul and Mary Ford (A drop piece of their big #1 song "Vaya Con Dios" was played), 2) Regarding the biggest #1 hit on the Billboard Soul Chart so far in the 1970's - "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green spending 9 weeks at #1 on the Soul chart in 1971-1972 (And that song was played as an AT40 extra, of course!), 3) Regarding the first Canadian to hit #1 on the American chart - Guy "Auld Lang Syne" Lombardo with "It's Love, Love, Love" in 1944, and 4) Regarding if a double sided record hit #1 with each side at #1 separately in the rock era - Happened once with Elvis Presley's 2 sided record "Hound Dog" b/w "Don't Be Cruel". * ALSO: Kudos for another week for WLS 94.7 playing all 3 AT40 Optional Extras - "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" by Meco (from the fastest grossing 1977 movie "Star Wars"), "Help Is On It's Way" by the Little River Band, and "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer.
TWO FINAL TIDBITS: 1) Is Larry Morgan, who you hear in the AT40 The 70's/The 80's opening credits, closing credits, start of hour bumpers, and optional extra segments, now doing local radio commercial voice overs? I might have heard Larry's voice in a local commercial for the Chicago music festival called Ravinia which was during a local break of the WLS AT40: The 70's show. 2) Rumor has it next weekend's AT40: The 70's offerings will be a 2 show offering with one of the episodes an August 1970 AT40 show and the other a later year 1970's AT40 show that was heard about a year ago.

AT40: The 70's is now on this Sunday morning on WLS 94.7 FM Chicago and they chose to air the aired a year ago August 21, 1976 AT40 episode over the August 22, 1970 AT40 episode, so no recap this week, maybe next week when there's something fresh for AT40: The 70's (with an optional extra show for Labor Day weekend as well?).
