This is the August 21, 1976 AT40 chart plus my thoughts on this from last year for the record... August 21, 1976 LW TW DE 40 Diana Ross - One Love In My Lifetime (25) 24 39 Queen - You're My Best Friend (16) DE 38 Helen Reddy - I Can't Hear You No More (29) DE 37 Henry Gross - Springtime Mama (37)21 36 Aerosmith - Last Child (21) 40 35 Lady Flash - Street Singin' (27) 18 34 Starbuck - Moonlight Feels Right (3) 39 33 Daryl Hall & John Oates - She's Gone (7) 37 32 Earth, Wind & Fire - Getaway (12) 35 31 James Taylor - Shower The People (22) 34 30 Cliff Richard - Devil Woman (6) 33 29 Silver - Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang (16) DE 28 Chicago - If You Leave Me Now (1) Flashback Extra: Rick Dees & His Cast Of Idiots "isco Duck (Part I)"38 27 Orleans - Still The One (5)30 26 The Ohio Players - Who'd She Coo (18) 32 25 Jefferson Starship - With Your Love (12) 29 24 Dr. Hook - A Little Bit More (11) 19 23 The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life (7) 27 22 Boz Scaggs - Lowdown (3) 25 21 War - Summer (7) 22 20 Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free (20)23 19 Tavares - Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel (15) 17 18 Keith Carradine - I'm Easy (17) 13 17 Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight (1) 20 16 Fleetwood Mac - Say You Love Me (11) 06 15 Gary Wright - Love Is Alive (2) 16 14 Peter Frampton - Baby I Love Your Way (12) Flashback Extra: Linda Ronstadt "That'll Be The Day"14 13 Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band - A Fifth Of Beethoven (1) 15 12 Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music (1) 12 11 George Benson - This Masquerade (10) 10 10 Vickie Sue Robinson - Turn The Beat Around (10)11 09 Seals And Crofts - Get Closer (6) 09 08 The Manhattans - Kiss And Say Goodbye (1) 05 07 The Beach Boys - Rock & Roll Music (5) 08 06 K.C. & The Sunshine Band - (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty (1) 07 05 England Dan & John Ford Coley - I'd Really Love To See You Tonight (2) 04 04 Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (2) 03 03 Paul McCartney & Wings - Let 'Em In (3)AT40 Flashback Extra: Blood, Sweat & Tears "Spinning Wheel"02 02 The Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing (1) 01 01 Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't Go Breakin' My Heart (1) - For the Blood, Sweat & Tears extra, Casey gave an update on the group who were responsible for "Jazz Rock". - For the " isco Duck" extra, Larry Morgan mentioned that Rick Dees would go on to have his own countdown show. - #1 Soul: Who'd She Coo - #1 Country: Bring It On Home To Me - Mickey Gilley - #1 Album: Frampton Comes AliveAnd here are my thoughts on this week's AT40: The 70's episode of the August 21, 2012 AT40 chart that I heard on WLS 94.7 FM this Sunday morning: * BY THE NUMBERS: 10 acts on this August 21, 1976 AT40 chart were newcomers at the time, and the AT40 chart had 12 disco songs on there. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Helen Reddy's "I Can't Hear You No More" was originally done in 1966 by Betty Everett? 2) The group Lady Flash is produced by Barry Manilow? 3) Cliff Richard was popular in England from the 1950's to the 1976 time and was better than Elton John? 4) Dr. Hook had a Humpty Dumpty like life story that they were rich in 1973 then went bankrupt in 1974? 5) Keith "I'm Easy" Carridene is the brother of David "Kung Fu" Carradine? 6) Lou Rawls suffered for a time amnesia after being involved in an auto accident? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the most successful son or daughter of a Top 40 artist: Rick Nelson, son of Ozzie and Harriett Nelson; 2) Regarding #1 song titles that were not part of the lyrics in the song: 8 of them - "The Chipmunk Song", "Battle of New Orleans", "The Three Bells", "Sukiyaki", "Fingertips Part 2", "Ode to Billy Joe", "Annie's Song" and "Mahogony" (Although that same question was asked again in a December 1982 episode and Casey mentioned 4 out of the 8 from that answer to the August 1976 response plus added one more - "T.S.O.P."); and 3) A 3 part question involving the date the first Billboard charts were published (July 1940), the first #1 song on the first Billboard chart ("I'll Never Smile Again" by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra), and when AT40 was launched (July 4, 1970, which was on 7 radio stations and up to the August 1976 time was heard on 350 radio stations plus the American/Armed Forces Radio Network - 'nuff said!) * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey mentioned The Beatles' "Got To Get You Into My Life" was #21 instead of #23, 2) Casey called Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band as The Walter Murphy Orchestra. * ALSO: 1) Casey played a drop piece of a song that spent 52 weeks on any chart - "Frou Line" by Bobby "Jingle Bell Rock" Helms which spent 52 weeks on the country chart from 1957 to 1958 (Although for honorable mention, in the post Casey Kasem era a/k/a the Ryan Seacrest era of AT40 from 2005-2006 "Scars" by Papa Roach spent 52 weeks on the AT40 CHR chart and Lifehouse's "You and Me" had a long run on the Ryan Seacrest AT40 Hot AC chart - all thanks to Ryan Seacrest and his KNUCKLEHEADED NO RECURRENT RULE FOR HIS AT40 CHART! Lucky I don't post on the Pulse CHR/Pop section on the Ryan AT40 weekly threads anymore...), 2) Then 1976 Chicago AT40 radio station WDAF gets a mention, 3) There was a plug kept intact in the show for the upcoming in October 1976 AT40 special of the Top 40 songs during the Beatles years besides the kept intact AT40 Universal City, California snail mail address. 4) Casey mentioned Elizabeth Bruce of the Saturday Evening Post a thanks for a mention in an article on TV Hucksters - I wish I could see that August 1976 S.E.P. TV Hucksters article online! FINAL NOTE: This next week's AT40 chart for August 28, 1976 following this August 21, 1976 AT40 episode would have only 1 debut on it: "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine spending a lone week at #40. Too bad Premiere has yet to play the August 28, 1976 AT40 episode on AT40: The 70's! (Last year Premiere played the September 4, 1976 AT40 episode that was 1 week after that 1 debut week from August 28, 1976)

I was reminded of "Need You Tonight", from 2-13 and 3-5-88 earlier this year.
- "My Sweet Lord" was an impromptu Extra.
- I've heard a couple of shows with other hosts where the final hour station reads were given in the final segment, but this is the first Casey-hosted show where I've heard that happen.
- You know...one of the things that Ryan Seacrest gets flak for in the current incarnation of AT40, is how it often lends itself to Hollywood interests during the show. So in a way, it's a bit surprising to find an equally non-music-related (while also completely unsleazy) Hollywood story in this week's final segment! ;)
- #1 on the Album chart: Mirage by Fleetwood Mac
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Dance Floor" by Zapp
- #1 on the Country chart: "Nobody" by Sylvia

Here's the AT40 bonus show that's airing this Labor Day weekend but as far as I know only one station is committed to airing it and not at a set time.
WJER in Dover Ohio will air the AT40 "Top 40 Hits of the 1990's" special following Cleveland Indians games both on Saturday and Monday. Saturday's game (@ Detroit) starts at 7PM and Monday's game (vs. Baltimore) starts at 4PM so expect WJER to air AT40 some three-and-a-half hours later (more or less).

Thank you for posting the 90s chart, JD. I'm surprised "Rush Rush" didn't make it.

It's too bad there's no AT40: The 90's series because of 1990-1995 Shadoe Stevens hosted AT40 episodes and 1998-1999 Casey Kasem hosted AT40 revival episodes.

Thank you for posting the 90s chart, JD. I'm surprised "Rush Rush" didn't make it. Of course this is R&R's charts that AT40 used not Billboard's. Also given the fact that pre-1994 songs were at a clear disadvantage compared to post-1994 songs.

I should think if there was ever a 90s countdown series, it would much simpler to use "Casey's Top 40" episodes from 1990 thru 1998 rather than use the Shadoe episodes and lose three years right in the middle of the decade.

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE AUGUST 31, 1974 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS MORNING:
* BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 17 foreign acts which include 10 British acts and 4 Canadian acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Rubettes' "Sugar Baby Love" is considered a 1970's DOO-WOP song? 2) Charlie Rich thought piano playing was just too good when he started out to be a musician? 3) Lynyrd Skynyrd once owned a 250 acre farm in Jacksonville, Florida? 4) Johnathan King, the producer on First Class' "Beach Baby", almost had caused an arrest warrant on himself? 65) When Helen Reddy came to the USA, she had $256 then took out a $500,000 loan? 6) Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Weed" was produced by Don "American Country Countdown" Bowman? 7) Paul Anka's first hit in 1956 called "Diana" made him a millionaire? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the act with the most #1's since 1970 (up to the 1974 date) - The Jackson 5 with 4 #1's, 2) Regarding the act with the most top 10 records than anyone else - Bing Crosby with 63 top 10 records, 3) Regarding the Canadian act to spend the most weeks at #1 - "Sh-Boom" by the Crew Cuts which spent 7 weeks at #1, HONORABLE MENTION: Many fans of Paper Lace's "The Night Chicago Died" wrote in to Casey to find out if it was based on a true story, well...according to songwriters Murray and Calender, despite being inspired by the 1930's conflict between the Chicago policemen and the gang mob, it wasn't since there was never a 100 Chicago policemen death for real! * KEPT INTACT IN THE SHOW 1974 RADIO STATION I.D.'S: WKVO in Cherry Point, North Carolina; KGY in Olympia, Washington; KOIL in Omaha, Nebraska; KBBK in Boise, Idaho; WTB? in Albany/Troy, New York; 3XL in Victoria, Australia; WLOM in Orlando, Florida; WTOF in Richmond, Virginia; and WTXL in Indianapolis, Indiana. * ALSO KEPT INTACT: The AT40 Universal City, California address and a plug for an upcoming AT40 Top Producers of the 1970's special. * AND: WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first 2 AT40 Optional Extras of "Jazzman" by Carole King and the rare "Kings of the Party" by Brownsville Station. * ONE FINAL THING: During the national AT40: The 70's commercial breaks there were a few promo spots for the upcoming 10 night NBC September 2013 "The Million Second Quiz" featuring voice over announcing by the current AT40 host (who will also host this NBC game show) Ryan Seacrest (SHUDDER! IN JANUARY IT WILL BE A DECADE SINCE RYAN SEACREST TOOK CASEY KASEM'S AT40 PLACE AND MADE A NO RECURRENT RULE FOR HIS AT40 CHART!).

The six songs that fall out of the survey are: "Hanging On a Heart Attack" by Device (LW: 35), "One Step Closer to You" by Gavin Christopher (LW: 34), "Invisible Touch" by Genesis (LW: 33), "Suzanne" by Journey (LW: 30), "Rumbleseat" by John Cougar Mellencamp (LW: 29), and "All the Love in the World" by The Outfield (LW: 25). NOTES: - Another member of the "both their #1s airing in the same year" club - and yet another one involving 1986, to boot: Steve Winwood's two #1s bookend the month of August, which all by itself stands out as an interesting event.
- In his intro for the song, Casey seemingly refers to #39 as "Shake it Up Baby" - oopsie.
- Both LDDs this week deal with adoption. If we put weeks where both LDDs were of the "lovey-dovey" type aside, I can think of only one other week where both LDDs dealt with the same subject: 9-7-85, where they both concerned suicide.
- Speaking of that second LDD, the writer mentioned that she was born October 4, 1965 - that makes her exactly 20 years older than me.
- Did any other single in the 1980s go back up in the Top 40 after going down the previous week - besides those that hit #1, fell out, then returned there? "Rumors" went back up a notch here after going down a notch the previous week.
- #1 on the Album chart: True Blue by Madonna
- #1 on the Country chart: "Heartbeat in the Darkness" by Don Williams
- The #1 Soul single is another matter entirely. Casey stated it was "Do You Get Enough Love" by Shirley Jones. However, per this week's issue of Billboard - which is in fact available to read on Google Books - it was instead this week's #22 song, "Love Zone"! Turns out there's another such mistake out there as well - on 7-16-88, Casey said "Paradise" by Sade was the week's #1 on the Black Singles chart; it was really "Roses Are Red" by The Mac Band. (That one is not available on Google to look at, however.)

"Rumors" went back up a notch here after going down a notch the previous week. Off the top of my head, the only one I know is "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz. It moved six spots to #2 on May 14, 1988, slipped back to #3, then spent two more weeks at #2.

(1) (also a...Short, Distance Dedication from Erica to her best friend Suzanne, who recently dyed her hair - which is making everybody ask, "Who's that girl?") Flashback Extra: Fleetwood Mac "Little Lies", which was "a week away from hitting the countdown"02 06 Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett - I Just Can't Stop Loving You (1) 01 01 Los Lobos - La Bamba (1)Now, if we have four debuts, we gotta have four songs that fall out - and those are: "Jam Tonight" by Freddie Jackson (LW: 32), "Shakedown" by Bob Seger (LW: 34), "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" by Miami Sound Machine (LW: 36), and "Alone" by Heart (LW: 40). NOTES: - Larry Morgan didn't point this out, but "Causing a Commotion" was chosen as an Extra despite not being on the Hot 100 that week - it debuted the following week at #41, but that week was hosted by Charlie Van Dyke. Still, to the best of my knowledge, this is something Premiere hasn't done since January 2009 for the 1-23-82 show.
- Another one from the "Deja Vu" files: Casey gives us the chart fact - again - of how Sheena Easton was the first artist to hit the Top 10 on the Pop, Country, Soul, and Dance charts. He first told this back on 3-16-85.
- WAIT...MAKE THAT TWO?: He also points out how "Mary's Prayer" names the girl who appears in the most song titles in the Rock Era. He answered a Question Letter to this effect on a previous show, but I don't remember which one that is offhand.
- Quite a few songs skipped in this one. Nice going with the production, guys.
- The third LDD - if you can really call it that - was totally impromptu, with no advance tease from Casey. He simply read the (short) letter before the song, and followed it with, "Okay Erica, here's your Long Distance Dedication!" And then he went and called it a Short Distance Dedication in his outro...so I opted to title it that and be done with it.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Love is a House" by Force MDs
- #1 on the Dance chart: "When Smokey Sings"
- #1 on the Country chart: "She's Too Good to Be True" by Exile
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* WLS chose to run the September 1, 1979 episode over the September 1971 episode aired 2 years ago. Since WLS started the September 1, 1979 with hour #2, the song that started hour #2 was the #34 song of "You Can't Change That" by Raydio. * This AT40 September 1, 1979 episode was also the first week with the new jingle package but the new 1979-1984 AT40 closing theme and hour #2, #3, and #4 bumper theme (which also temporary replaced the Shuckatoom theme in the opening for several weeks) didn't start until I think about a week later on the September 8, 1979 AT40 episode (The same week Australian born Gordon Elliott guest hosted for Casey Kasem in his first of 2 AT40 guest host stints). * This September 1, 1979 AT40 chart had 10 British acts, 14 soul/R&B crossover hits, 10 female solo artists, and 14 foreign acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Neil Schoen of the group Journey was originally a member of the group Santana? 2) The act M is a 1 man band with a 1 letter name? 3) Nick Lowe was a member of the not so hot British group Brimsley Schwartz? 4) The Rockets come from Detroit, Michigan? 5) The group Blackfoot comes from Jacksonville, Florida? 6) Patrick "Born to Be Alive" Hernandez comes from Paris, France? 7) G.Q.'s "I Do Love You" is called SHOOP-SHOOP-SHOOBY DOO WOP music? 8) The lead singer of the group Night is Stevie Lange? 9) The Commodores once had their musical instruments stolen? 10) Elton John's producer for Rocket Records, John Reed, had to climb a 12 foot wall to meet Elton in the backyard of some club? ) 11) The Charlie Daniels song "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" is a gambling related song? 12) Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra is the one man act behind the group? 13) For their debut album cover, the Knack (at #1 on the September 1, 1979 AT40 chart with "My Sharona") had to pose like the Beatles? * QUESTION LETTER: Regarding the most top 10 songs by a solo artist without hitting #1 - Fats Domino with 8 top 10's but no #1 (A record later broken by Bruce Springsteen). * ALSO: 1) Casey mentioned to tie into Spyro Gyra coming from Buffalo, New York that it was also the birthplace of then AT40 staffer Matt Wilson. 2) A POOSIBLE BLOOPER that casey mentioned the 27 acts in the rock era to make the Top 40 named after food, with the most coming from the snack/dessert category with 17, and he mentioned a group named P-Nut Gallery, however, P-Nut Gallery didn't reach the Top 40 at all since their 1971 song "Do You Know What Time It Is?" missed the top 40 reaches! * AND: I heard the AT40 archive song of 1975 of "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton (Minnie Riperton passed away of cancer at the 1979 time) plus the Long Distance Dedication of Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against The World". As well as the AT40 optional extras of "Please Don't Go" by KC and the Sunshine Band (The first #1 for the 1980's) and the rare, Halloween leaning song "Spooky" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section.
ONE FINAL NOTE: Rumor has it next weekend's AT40: The 70's offerings will be another 2 episode offering.

Below are my thoughts on that September 1971 AT40 episode I heard 2 years ago when 1970-1972 AT40 shows were not secondary choices with 1973-1979 AT40 shows in the AT40: The 70's series: Here are my thoughts after listening to this weekend's AT40: The 70's episode of the September 4, 1971 AT40 episode on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago: * Casey said at the start of the show that this week's countdown is a "Wild countdown". Why is it? * Also at the start, Casey mentioned the 8 droppers from AT40 for this week, it would be about a month or so Casey would stop mentioning the droppers dropping out of AT40 of each week's AT40 show but resume that mentioning of the droppers every week starting in December 1983 (Footnote: For a time from November 1988 to June 1989 months after Shadoe Stevens took over Casey Kasem's AT40 place the mentioning of droppers dropping out of AT40 every week was withdrawn until demand to bring it back happened) * Twice on the show after the first and second hours Casey did the rare recap of debuts in the AT40 chart. * Casey made a correction to the previous week's 1971 AT40 chart that Carole King the week before had written 4 songs on the chart when he mentioned there were 3. * SLOWEST CLIMNBING SONG IN THE AT40 SEPTEMBER 4, 1971 CHART: "If Not For You" by Olivia Newton John. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary was once voted as the 3rd. ugliest man(!) on campus while in college at Michigan State University? 2) Rod Stewart was under contract with 2 record labels in 1971 (on the Warner Bros. label as a member of Faces/Small Faces, and on the Mercury label as a solo artist)? 3) Donny Osmond got the idea to cover "Go Away Little Girl" from Steve Lawrence's son David? * QUESTION LETTER: In the 12 year gap from 1959-1971 the record spending the longest at #1 was a 3 way tie between "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, "Theme From a Summer Place" by Percy Faith, and "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darin each spending 9 weeks at #1. * The #1 song on that September 4, 1971 AT40 chart was "Uncle Albert/Admiral Haisley" by Paul and Linda McCartney moving from #12 to #1 becoming the biggest leap to #1 outside of the top 10 since The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" in 1966. * ALSO: 1) Did you notice that AT40 started in that 1971 week began to be heard on a radio station in Western Australia? 2) Did you like the 1971 mail order record album commercial of The American Top 40 Double Dozen kept intact in the show? It was $4.99, but I bet it's a lot more on e-bay today (And I wish it was reissued on CD for a limited time, unless someone made a CD-R copy of this AT40 Double Dozen 1971 record set). * AND...by surprise, at the end of the second hour and before the third hour, WLS 94.7 FM played the second optional extra of this week's AT40: The 70's episode - "Superstar" by the Carpenters. * FINALLY: With this week's AT40 the 70's broadcast from September 4, 1971 I have now heard at least 1 AT40 show from every year of the 1970's since I started to listen to it on WLS 94.7 FM True Oldies Chicago in June 2011. Now, I wonder if next week's AT40: The 70's show will be a 1970 show with the song "War" by Edwin Starr in it which could tie in to the September 11, 2001 tragic event 10th. anniversary...

This AT40: The 1980's entry for this weekend was originally aired the week after the AT40 episode with the infamous Shannon/Dead Dog Long Distance Dedication, but I guess Premiere won't air that September 14, 1985 AT40 episode (previously ran in 2007 and again in 2010 for its 25th. anniversary) ever again until either next year or September 2015 (If the AT40: The 70's/80's series still airs on radio stations, and which would be 3 decades after that episode originally aired, even if Larry Morgan won't intro and outro an OPTIONAL EXTRA segment for this involving how the Dead Dog LDD was made with Casey's censored rant remarks/bloopers!)
