As reported earlier, this weekend "AT40: The '70s" has two shows again this week. So for the second straight week, my weekly preview will be a two-parter. As always, the '80s will come first. "AT40: The '80s" this week presents 9/21/1985 . (If the AT40: The 70's/80's series still airs on radio stations, and which would be 3 decades after that episode originally aired, even if Larry Morgan won't intro and outro an OPTIONAL EXTRA segment for this involving how the Dead Dog LDD was made with Casey's censored rant remarks/bloopers!) Why would the series not air on radio stations?

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* WLS chose to air the September 13, 1975 AT40 episode (I know they always choose the later year when there are 2 show weekends!). * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart has 6 English acts, plus 27 songs written or co-written by the person/act who sings it; Plus among the 7 debuts are 2 Jaws related records: John Williams' "Theme From Jaws" and Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws"; speaking of "Mr. Jaws", 5 songs in the AT40 chart are heard in "Mr. Jaws" as well - "One of These Nights", "How Sweet it Is", "Jive Talkin'", "Get Down Tonight", and the #1 song "Rhinestone Cowboy". * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Leon Russell, despite having 2 top 40 hits, mostly played piano on other artists; 1960's-1970's hits and even wrote songs for other arists? 2) Jefferson Starship was the new name for Jefferson Airplane? 3) The Ritchie Family consists of a 40 piece orchestra plus 3 girls and a guy named Ritchie? 4) Morris "Feelings" Albert is from Rio De Janero, Brazil? 5) James Taylor once broke his hands in a motorcycle accident and even ended up in a mental hospital for a time? 6) Freddy Fender first did "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" in 1959? 7) David Bowie had a fear of being a success as a child? 8) Janis Ian's first top 40 hit "Society's Child" was done in 1967 when she was 16 years old? 8) At that 1975 time, Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" became the first song to be #1 on the pop and country charts at the same time since "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean in 1961? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the song in the rock era to make the top 40 in the most versions - "Unchained Melody" and "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" with 5 versions each; 2) Regarding the artist with the most big top 10 hits in the shortest span of time - Glenn Miller with 36 top 10 hits 1940-1943. * BLOOPERS: 1) Casey said that Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" was at #35 when it was at #34! 2) Casey said that James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is" was moving up the chant when it was moving down the chart! * ALSO: 1) WLS played all 3 AT40 optional extras of "Who Loves You", "Bad Blood", and "Lyin' Eyes"; 2) Casey played a drop piece of Sly and the Family Stone's 1968 song "Dance to the Music" to tie in that S&TFS Larry Graham now has his own group with Graham Central Station (At #39 with "Your Love"); 3) Then in 1975 AT40 Chicago station WDHF is mentioned; 4) The AT40 Universal City, California address was kept intact; 5) Casey recalled a Newsweek riddle to an act in the countdown - "What has 150 white teeth, feeds on milk and stew, and rides motorcycles backwards? The Osmonds!"; and 6) To tie in with the Theme From Jaws, which was in 4th. place at the 1975 time as the all time grossing movie, Casey mentioned the other top 3 high grossing movies of all time up to the 1975 time: 1) Gone With the Wind 2) The Sound of Music 3) The Godfather (FOOTNOTE: That Top 3 would change in later years post 1975 as other big high gross all time movies "Star Wars", "E.T.", "Titanic", and maybe "Avatar" would take the top 3 spots).

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE SEPTEMBER 23, 1978 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO THIS SUNDAY MORNING:
* This AT40 episode was originally 2 weeks before AT40 expanded from 3 hours to 4 hours. * SONG OF NOTE: The #39 song was the nearly 8 minute "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf but AT40 did a 5 minute edited version of the song (even keeping the Phil Rizzuto faux play by play part intact!). * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart contained 4 remakes, 2 Rolling Stones song, 6 disco songs, 13 foreign acts, and 2 "DEVOTED TO YOU" songs - "Devoted to You" by Carly Simon and James Taylor and "Hopelessly Devoted To You" by Olivia Newton John. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) The Carly Simon/James Taylor duet "Devoted To You" was a remake of an Everly Brothers song? 2) Alicia "I Love The Night Life" Bridges' first job was as a disc jockey at age 13? 3) Toni Tenille of the Captain and Teneille is from Montgomery, Alabama? 4) The Captain and Teneille's song "You Never Done It Like That" was written by Neil Sedaka? 5) Linda Rondstat's big hits were mostly remakes of other artists songs? 6) Linda Rondstat's remake of "Back in the USA" was originally done by Chuck Berry? 7) Frankie Valli's "Grease" was produced by Barry Gibb? 8) Foxy was warned a few times not to perform at a Miami night club the song "Get Off" (and the night club manager warned after 3 nights of doing the song: "If you perform that song again, I gonna choke you into the ocean!")? 7) Rick James once produced records for the Spinners? 8) Nick Gilder was once a member of the group Sweeney Todd, who made it to #90 in 1976 with a song called "Roxy Roller"? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the act with the most top 40 instrumentals in the rock era - Duane Eddy with 15 top 40 instrumentals (The writer of this question thought it was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, but it wasn't), and 2) Regarding the biggest song in the rock era with a man's name in the title - "Mack the Knife" (9 weeks at #1). * ALSO: 1) There was a then just new to AT40 in 1978 LONG DISTANCE DEDICATION for the #6 song of "Summer Nights" by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, 2) Casey did an AT40 BOOK OF RECORDS report about the man with the most gold records - Hal Blaine with 150! (Hal was a musician for some acts mostly), 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the optional extras of "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer and "Straight On" by Heart.

"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", which was "two weeks away from reaching the countdown"02 04 Prince & The Revolution - Let's Go Crazy (1) 01 02 John Waite - Missing You (1)Three songs debuted this week, so three songs fell out: "Round and Round" by Ratt (LW: 26), "I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartman (LW: 27), and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" by Billy Joel (LW: 38). NOTES: - WCRZ sure played some games with this one. They started the show at #38, played the last segment of the first hour twice, and even faded the show out a bit early (during Casey's outro for #1 "Missing You"). On the other hand, they also played all four extras for the first time in a while, so...there's that, I guess?
- This is probably easily the most oddly-paced 1984 show. It's the only one from that year to play all of Last Week's Top 3, and with the second hour also starting at #32, it harks back to earlier-80s shows. Oh yes, in that second hour, two of the original six segments had three songs - unusual for any show.
- The first LDD didn't actually name a song to play - it ended just asking to play a song for Mystery.
- #1 on the Album chart: Purple Rain by Prince
- #1 on the Country chart: "Let's Chase Each Other 'Round the Room" by Merle Haggard
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Caribbean Queen"

By the way, the 80s episode from 9/15/84 featured a trivia question I wrote to Casey on AT40 but sadly it will never air because Charlie Van Dyke was sitting in for Casey that week.

The question was "Which song spend the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 without making the top 40?" and the answer was "Around The World in 80 Days" by Bing Crosby.

Hi everybody, This is my first post. I'm a 80s fan of AT40 & ACC.
Here is that question and answer - I removed your name Cartman :)
<< A listener in Massachusetts wants to know what song has spend the most weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 without ever making it into the top 40. Well the song that holds that record was the theme song from the movie that won the oscar in 1956 for best picture. A movie about travelling in a big balloon. Details coming up.
Now let's answer that question about long charts runs below the top 40. A listener in Westfield Massachusetts <xxx> wants to know what song has spend the most weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 without ever making it into the top 40. Well the song that holds that record was the vocal version of the theme song from the movie that won the Oscar for best film of 1956. Along with Oscars for best screenplay, best cinematography and best editing. It's a film which also holds an american trivia record. According to Guiness, it used more extras than any other american film in history: over 68,000 people. Now the instrumental version of the theme from this movie hits the top 40 twice : once by Mona Vonie and once by Victor Young. But the vocal version never got any higher than #54 even tough it spend a long 29 weeks in the Hot 100: the vocal version of the theme song from the movie 'Around The World In 80 Days' recorded by none other than the great Bing Crosby. And there's your answer <xxx>, the song that spend the most time in the Hot 100 without ever breaking into the top 40 is Bing Crosby's version of 'Around The World In 80 Days'. It spend 29 weeks on the Billboard chart without getting any higher than #54. Thanks for writing in. >>

Hi everybody, This is my first post. I'm a 80s fan of AT40 & ACC. Here is that question and answer - I removed your name Cartman :) << A listener in Massachusetts wants to know what song has spend the most weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 without ever making it into the top 40. HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70's EPISODE OF THE SEPTEMBER 25, 1976 AT40 EPISODE I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 3 former #1's, a dozen disco hits, and 4 San Francisco acts. * DID YOU KNOW: Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was dedicated to a disaster of a ship of the same name whose 29 men died in late 1975 (No real cause of it was known)? 2) The group Firefall comes from Denver, Colorado? 3) Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was once a quarterback on a high school football team? 4) Linda Rondstat is the remake queen of the 1970's? 4) The group Silver in Feb. 1976 had a chance to come up with a top 40 hit or go someplace else? 5) Rick "Disco Duck" Dees while as a Memphis D.J. did 300 character voice impersonations? 6) Rick Dees was also fired from his D.J. job at the 1976 for a conflict of interest (And rumor has it that Rick Dees may be out of a job if his Weekly Top 40 radio countdown show, celebrating its 30th. anniversary this month, ceases after 31 years at the end of 2013 - This could be the latest demise of a countdown show long on the air - Remember when the old AT40 then hosted by Shadoe Stevens in its final years ended in 1994-1995?)? 7) Cliff Richard once had a job impersonating Elvis Presley? 8) In 1976, Wild Cherry (at #1 on the AT40 chart with "Play That Funky Music") became the first white group to hit #1 on Billboard's Soul Chart since 1963 when the white group Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs hit #1 on the Billboard Soul Chart with "Sugar Shack"? * QUESTION LETTERS: 1) Regarding the first country song to hit #1 on the pop charts - "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette" by Tex Williams in 1947 (A drop piece of the song was played), 2) Regarding the longest named solo artist to make the Top 40 charts - For singers, it's Engelbert Humperdink (20 letters); for non singers, it's Everett McKinley Dirkson (22 letters). * ALSO: 1) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played all 3 AT40 Optional extras of Barry DeVerizon's "Nadia's Theme", Alice Cooper's "I Never Cry", and Boston's "More Than a Feeling"; 2) Casey mentioned a rumor that the mystery background singer of Diana Ross' "One Love In My Lifetime" might be Motown's founder Berry Gordy, Jr., or it may not be - we'll never tell or know...

(Pretty Young Thing)", which made the highest debut that week at #7502 03 Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All (2) 01 01 Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart (1)NOTES: - In the first LDD, Casey noted that its writer forgot to choose a song - so, they chose one for him. As has been the case with other such LDDs, they certainly hit the bullseye. :)
- Casey states that the show moved to KIQQ in L.A. at the beginning of Hour 3; that was where the show turned up there following their departure from KIIS in '83.
- Another week with a very early reading of the other Billboard #1s (leading into #9 this week); particularly unusual for a 1983 show.
- Just two weeks ago, Casey told the story of how The Babys landed a record deal through a label seeing their music video. He tells a story with a similar path this week, with Spandau Ballet getting notice from record labels courtesy of a documentary on the New Romantic scene, which they were a part of, airing on British TV.
- Another show where Casey gives the final hour's station mentions to start the final segment. Speaking of that final segment, you probably already know the story Casey tells there, if you've been to the American Top 40 Wiki page at any point before now. ;) It's not quite word-for-word there, but the jist of it is there.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Don't You Know How Much I Love You" by Ronnie Milsap
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Cold Blooded" by Rick James
- #1 on the Album chart: Synchronicity by The Police

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEK'S AT40: THE 70'S EPISODE OF THE OCTOBER 12, 1974 AT40 CHART I HEARD ON WLS 94.7 FM CHICAGO:
* The previous 1974 week AT40 had a special of the top 10 producers of the 1970's. * BY THE NUMBERS: This AT40 chart had 4 Canadian acts and 5 British acts. * DID YOU KNOW: 1) Jim Weatherly wrote 3 big hits for Gladys Knight and the Pips? 2) Andy Kim co-wrote "Sugar Sugar" by the non existant cartoon group The Archies? 3) John Lennon is sometimes known as "Dr. Winston 'O Boogie"? 4) John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" features backing vocals by Elton John? 5) Donny Osmond of The Osmonds is sometimes an electronic whiz kid? 6) Mac Davis (the "Cool Texan") became a singer as a good way to get girls? 7) Mac Davis' song "Stop and Smell The Roses" was co-written by Doc Sereiveson of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson fame? 8) Cat Stevens wrote and illustrated a children's book called "Teaser and the Firecat"? 9) Olivia Newton John (occupying #1 on this AT40 chart with "I Honestly Love You") is sometimes not really a country singer? * QUESTION LETTER: Which was regarding the top 10 songs of the 1940's which were: 1) Buttons and Bows 2) I'll Never Smile Again 3) 'Til the End of Time 4) The Gypsy 5) Near You 6) Heartaches 7) I've Heard That Song Before 8) Paper Doll 9) Frente 10) Riders in the Sky HONORABLE MENTION: Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" * And though not a question letter, Casey, in response to a Cowsills fan, gave a report on whatever became of the Cowsills after their 1972 breakup from the music business to do different jobs (Although mother Barbara Cowsill would pass away in 1985), and a drop piece of Casey's favorite Cowsills song "Hair" was played. * ALSO: 1) This was the week Casey went back to mentioning the AT40 affiliates after 2 and a 1/2 months of using real radio station I.D.'s (and then in 1974 Chicago station WDAF was mentioned by Casey in one of the 3 sets), 2) The AT40 Universal City, California address was kept intact, 3) WLS 94.7 FM Chicago played the first 2 optional extras of "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas and "I Can Help" by Billy Swan, and 4) Casey mentioned that at the 1974 time the Armed Forces Radio Network was carrying a 1 hour version of American Top 40 which would expand to 2 hours before 1974 was over (Maybe there were lots of editing for the songs to cram a 3 hour show into a 1 hour-2 hour show?)
