October 6th, 1984Dropoff time! 19. Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters - good song, shame to see it off. 21. Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It - it sucks, if not for judas priest this would be the worst metal song ever in my book. not a big loss AT ALL 28. Peter Wolf – Lights Out – I like it, but I don’t LOVE it. Come As You Are is better IMO. 31. Corey Hart – Sunglasses At Night – my favorite from him. 36. Billy Squier – Rock Me Tonite – also my favorite from him. I saw the video not that long ago and I don’t understand why people b***hed so much about it. LW#1: Prince – Let’s Go Crazy – will comment later. 40. Joyce Kenendy And Jeffrey Osbourne – The Last Time I Made Love – the last time these two made love was probably a looooong time ago, this SUCKS! I’ll take Joyce Drake over these two FLOPS anyday. 39. Naked Eyes – (What) In The Name Of Love – its not bad but nothing amazing. 38. Hall & Oates – Out Of Touch – I LOVE this song! One of my favorites from them. 37. Barry Gibb – Shine Shine – sucks. 36. Lionel Richie – Stuck On You – also sucks. OMG WHATS WITH ALL THE CRAP. I THOUGHT 1984 WAS GOOD. GOD. 35. Sheena Easton – Strut – now THIS is more like it! Freakin’ LOVE this song, my favorite from Sheena. The video is kinda boring though. 34. Tina Turner – Better Be Good To Me – its good but not one of her best. 33. Chaka Khan – I Feel For You – its good but I prefer Ain’t Nobody. 32. Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go – NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. WTF MAN. I THOUGHT 1984 WAS COOL. GO AWAY DAMN! GOD. 31. Dennis DeYoung – Desert Moon – I like it but Tommy Shaw is better, both in the Styx and solo. “Girls With Guns” is AWESOME. And of course I gotta mention the Damn Yankees! CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGH ENOOOOOUGH. 30. Jermaine Jackson – Dynamite – FLOP! I’m so glad Sebastian Bach beat his ass in Gone Country. 29. Billy Idol – Flesh For Fantasy – Love this song! My favorite from him. My friend Taylor thinks he’s hot. 28. Prince – Purple Rain – NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. HOW THE HELL DID THIS… THING… DEBUT ALL THE WAY AT #28? WHY CAN’T PAT BENATAR DEBUT THIS HIGH? GOD. LDD: The Beatles – The Long And Winding Road – the song’s alright but those people are WAY too obsessed with the Beatles. They cried for three days over John Lennon’s death? It was sad and all but they didn’t even KNOW the brotha. Not trying to be a b***h but it just seemed like a rather pathetic dedication to me. 27. Elton John – Who Wears These Shoes – its cool 26. Diana Ross – Swept Away – sucks. 25. Rick Springfield – Bop ‘Til You Drop – good song! 24. Lindsey Buckingham – Go Insane – it’s okay. 23. David Bowie – Blue Jean – one of my favorites from him. 22. Donna Summer – There Goes By Baby – it’s okay. 21. Rod Stewart – Some Guys Have All The Luck – one of his best. 20. Laura Branigan – The Lucky One – it’s okay. 19. The Fixx – Are We Ourselves – the truth is, I was away from my computer when this was on, so I have no idea what this sounds like. 18. Night Ranger – When You Close Your Eyes – love this song! They did an XM channel takeover thing on the 80’s station not that long ago, and I listened to it, and they were so funny! They played music and told stories from like when they were touring and stuff, I remember there were stories about the members of Vixen having a crush on them and how Judas Priest’s tour manager wouldn’t give them food. 17. The Jacksons – Torture – good song! I just realized that there hasn’t been a song I disliked on here since “Purple Pain” Makes up for all that crap from earlier! 16. John Cafferty – On The Dark Side – I spoke too soon. 15. Pointer Sisters – I’m So Excited – it’s good but can get a little annoying at times. 14. Huey Lewis & The News – If This Is It – love it! My least favorite Sports single though. EXTRA: The Police – Every Breath You Take – why did they play this as an extra again? I wasn’t paying attention because I was doing this. Good song though! 13. Tina Turner – What’s Love Got To Do With It – good song! 12. Bananarama – Cruel Summer – also a good song! 11. Billy Ocean – Caribbean Queen – well would ya look at that? MORE GOOD SONGS! 10. Bruce Springsteen – Cover Me – it’s okay 9. Scandal – The Warrior – love it! 8. Madonna – Lucky Star – good song but she’s had better. LDD: Lionel Richie – Hello – sad LDD but the song still sucks. 7. Sheila E. – The Glamorous Life – great song! 6. Chicago – Hard Habit To Break – good song, nothing amazing though. 5. Cyndi Lauper – She Bop – LOVE this song! My favorite from Cyndi. I’m not sure whether this, “Strut”, “Out Of Touch”, or “Drive” (which is still to come) is my favorite song on the chart. 4. John Waite – Missing You – good song! 3. The Cars – Drive – love this song! One of my favorite bands. Ugh, I can’t believe I forgot to put them in my new last.fm profile. Click here if you have no idea what the hell I’m talking about. I worked on it for bloody hours on Saturday night. 2. Stevie Wonder – I Just Called To Say I Love You – it’s okay but nothing great. 1. Prince – Let’s Go Crazy – okay, what I’m about to say is, like, super embarassing, but as much as I dislike Prince, this song is actually SOMEWHAT decent. :( Pat Benatar/Heart/Lita Ford are all still better though innit. NEXT WEEK PREDICTIONS: Unfortunately, I think it’ll be the flop that is 1981. They should wait until late October to do that though because of “Promises In The Dark” but whatever. I dunno what I want them to do next week though. I obviously don’t want 1980 or 1981, I don’t want them to do 1982 until Pat Benatar and Rush are both charting, I don’t want them to do 1983 until Pat Benatar is charting, they already did 1984 this week so it would be quite stupid of them to do it again, same thing for 1985 because they did it last week, and to be quite honest I’m just not in the mood for 1986 or 1987.

In otherwords, no matter what year they do next week you won't be happy. ;) I think the two most likely years are 81 or 87. Since I've started listening to this, those two are the only years which haven't been featured (though I missed the 80 and 83 weeks), and it looks like it's been longer since there's been an 81 show.

Few things to add - Droppers: Rock Me Tonite Sunglasses at Night Lights Out We're Not Gonna Take It Ghostbusters "The Last Time I Made Love" was also at its peak, but "Cover Me" was not. That one made it to #7. And Stevie Wonder made it to #1. "Every Breath You Take" was an extra that was part of the show...Flashback Extras were "We're Not Gonna Take It" (after #31) and "All Through the Night" (after #11). Interesting choice of extras, given that one was a dropper and the other would debut the next week. Also...Casey announced the BB position that "Better Be Good to Me" was rising from (42), despite it being an AT40 debut. How often did he do that? Thank you for the corrections and comments. I mis-typed the peak of Stevie Wonder. I did not mark #40 as a peak week because it actually peaked and stalled the following week, really. As for the extra, I knew it was an "AT40" extra from the original airing. The station that aired this on Saturday morning did NOT include the Ed McMann's voiced "AT40 extra from...", in fact they always omit when they air it.

Hi this is my first time posting here.
In addition to "Slow Hand", the other droppers from this particular week (10/17/1981) were:
"Believe It Or Not (The Greatest American Hero)" - Joey Scarbury "General Hospi-Tale" - Afternoon Delights (wonder what that song was like) "Breaking Away" - Balance "In Your Letter" - REO Speedwagon

Didn't know that the song was rap (not a big fan of that genre). I do remember the intro to "General Hospital" with the ambulance and the music. I was a little kid back then.

Btw I left a message in the Hot 100/Billboard 200 Archive thread. I doubt my request relates to anything AT40 as far as the '70s or '80s are concerned but I'm working on a long-term research project involving Billboard and I was wondering if anybody who reads this has the "Pop Charts 1955-1959" book by any chance. I would like to know:
1.) If the charts in the book started with 1/1/1955 or 7/9/1955
2.) I would also like to know the entire "Best Sellers", "Jockeys" and "Juke Box" charts for 7/9/1955. I know "Rock Around the Clock" was #1 on the Best Sellers chart that week but not the other two charts. I'd like to see what happens when you combine the three charts since the Top 100 (or Hot 100) was not around.

Supremes Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong do not sing backup on the song.
- What happened to "Holiday" in 1987? I was checking the song's peak - not expecting that they were in fact peaking this week! Chart run: 36-29-31-32-off.
- "Heaven" had its music break cut in half.
- "Time of My Life" was missing the second verse (which annoyed me, because whenever WMJO plays the song, they cut out during the chorus after the second verse. I hate that edit!)

Good show. Not one of my favorites, but it was cool. Highlights for me include Bon Jovi (my favorite song on the chart), Journey, Steve Winwood, Human League, Pretenders, Don Johnson, 'Til Tuesday, Wang Chung, & Peter Gabriel.

I listened to WMGA in Huntington West Virginia and the other three extras that were played were: Hour #2: "Welcome To The Boomtown" - David & David Hour #3: "At This Moment" - Billy Vera & the Beaters Hour #4: "Land Of Confusion" - Genesis
"Imagine" was an LDD from a man named John Records who marched cross-country to protest nuclear weapons.

I own the AT40 November 4, 1986 on CD because I recorded when XMradio aired this "unedited" version, so I did not listen this week. I put these CDs some place, I've want to find and listen once more.

[40 -- Gregory Abbott - Shake You Down - Never really cared for this but my mother did, well, so did my father. Yucko man!
39 -- Howard Jones - You Know I Love You...Don't You? - This was OK, but not his best, I prefer his 1983-1984 singles
38 -- Talking Heads - Wild Wild Life - Great song, I still love it to this day 37 40 The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong - The piano riffs in this song kill me softly. I absolutely love this song!
36 26 Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes - I cannot find this version (radio mix) anywhere, but this is one I prefer.
35 28 Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) - Classic from day one!
LDD: Howard Jones "Life in One Day" by a college student on the rebound from an awful time in her life - Not too bad, better than his later singles
34 37 OMD - (Forever) Live and Die - Excellent piece of work. OMD are classic masterpiece makers and this is one of them!
33 38 'Til Tuesday - What About Love - This made me teary eyed when I was rejected by my next door neighbour named Shelly and then some of her friends (male & female). Yeah interesting memories living in England.
32 23 Stacey Q - Two of Hearts - Sounded like a minority to me for some reason. Come to find out after watching the video, she simply an average white female. Great dance song, and I love "We Connect" as well!
31 39 Ben E. King - Stand By Me - Very soulful and unforgettable. No one could touch this original not even Maurice White (EW& Fire) Flashback Extra: Duran Duran "Notorious" 30 19 Billy Joel - A Matter of Trust - Hated this for a long time until I finally listened to the song. Now I find this to be almost a classic.
29 16 Genesis - Throwing it All Away - I did not like this at first, but lyrics are intersting enough for me to stay tuned.
28 14 Don Johnson - Heartbeat - One of the worst records by many ever. I personally like this song, but I also find this to be too simple and unfinished. 27 30 Triumph - Somebody's Out There (27) - Never liked it 26 32 Steve Winwood - Freedom Overspill (20) - Very soulful and I love the organ
25 36 The Bangles - Walk Like an Egyptian (1) - Good but waaaay overplayed
24 17 Journey - Girl Can't Help It (17) - Great song and bad video, I guess that's why they were "Raised On Radio".
23 31 Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (2) - True classic pop song
22 29 Billy Idol - To Be a Lover (6) - Better than the original by William Bell, 10 fold!!! 21 24 Aretha Franklin - Jumpin' Jack Flash (21) - Once again better than the original and oulful too!
20 21 Corey Hart - I Am By Your Side (18) - I love this song to death. Corey Hart is the man!
19 07 Janet Jackson - When I Think of You (1) - OK song, remix is a little better, watch the video
18 27 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way it Is (1)- Classic song 17 10 Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force - All Cried Out (8)- Smooth ballad that Allure butchered. 16 22 Ric Ocasek - Emotion in Motion (15) - This really showcased Ric Ocasek's performance, which was smoove.
15 25 Huey Lewis & The News - Hip to Be Square (3) - I have always liked this more than "Stuck With You", it should have been a Hot 100 #1, and it did not even make it to #2!
14 20 Lionel Richie - Love Will Conquer All (9) - Better than that ridiculous "Ceiling" song. 13 18 Toto - I'll Be Over You (11) - Soulful and soothing, still not over yet? I thought so! Good work!
12 15 Peter Cetera & Amy Grant - The Next Time I Fall (1) - Thank God it was a #1, I loved this from day one!
11 08 Anita Baker - Sweet Love (8)- Sweeter than honey, love it!! LDD: John Lennon "Imagine" - OK, not for me, really. The lyrics are a classic adn unforgetable. 10 13 Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain (9) - Real classic treat, you gotta hear the answer song "Thunder & Lightning" by Miss Thang
09 12 Cameo - Word Up (7) - OK. At first I was like 'Why did you buy me this album for Christmas (1986)?' But as I listened I liked all the others but this one quite a bit especially "Back & Forth". Too bad that missed the Top 40.
08 02 Tina Turner - Typical Male (2) - My mom said she was thinking about getting "Break Every Rule" for me. Probably would not have made a difference if she did. This would probably have been my first "Rock N Roll" LP. As for this song, it's nothing special.
07 11 Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad Name (1) - This applies to anyone who has had their hearts broken. I can relate - trust me!
06 09 Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight (4) - Classic song, always loved it
05 06 Madonna - True Blue (3) - This is my least favourite Madonna song, well, one of them.
04 05 Human League - Human (1) - Good work Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! I prefer their songs that's less "urban".
03 01 Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (1) - Not bad, I like Cyndi but, I prefer "Change Of Heart"
02 03 Robert Palmer - I Didn't Mean to Turn You On (2) - I still do not approve him remaking an R&B classic. He needs to stick to some his rock oriented songs. This just did not do it for me.
01 04 Boston - Amanda (1) - My least favourite song of 1986, never liked it and probably never will. I like "We're Ready:" & "Cantcha Say/Still In Love" medley ten fold!
