*1982 peak.
NOTES:
This is actually not the first time we've had back-to-back weeks featuring "I'm So Excited"; in 2008, we had 11-6-82 followed by 11-3-84. Pity that next week can't be 12-5-87 (which Charlie Van Dyke hosted), then we could also have back-to-back "Valerie"s.
Incidentally, I'm pretty sure they played the 1987 remix of "Valerie" - and cut its second verse out while they were at it.
More from the "Deja Vu" files: The story of the journalist who became ABC's lead singer, told later on 10-12-85. Pretty sure the Question Letter asking who the most successful American act in England is was also asked on another show, just not sure which one(s).
Quite unusual for Casey to point out the week's Biggest Dropper when said Dropper is smack dab in the middle of the survey. Then again, it's not the only time he'd do so, and Shadoe Stevens would have no qualms about revealing the week's Biggest Dropper no matter where it was - heck, even Seacrest does that these days.
Story behind "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" as an Extra: Casey told the story of George Goldner, who produced the song; George was one of the leaders behind integrating music during the later 50s and 60s.
#1 on the Soul chart: "Sexual Healing"
#1 on the Album chart: Business as Usual by Men at Work
#1 on the Country chart: "It Ain't Easy Bein' Easy" by Janie Fricke

Yes, they played the 1987 version. Larry Morgan said that "Valerie" came from Winwood's album "Talking Back to the Night", which was true of the original, but the remix played which went on to become a much bigger hit was from his 1987 compilation "Chronicles". Here is the 1982 version:
Meanwhile, for next week both shows are a year earlier than this week's: December 8, 1973 and December 5, 1981 (plus stations now devoted to Christmas music have the option of Part 1 of the top 60 Christmas songs, which was first broadcast as part of Casey's "American Top 10" in 2004 or 2005.)

NOTES:
FREUDIAN SLIPS: Casey stated that "Centerfold" was doing even better than their last hit "Love Stinks" - it debuted at #35 last week and climbed six notches to #30. And then later on, "Oh No" moves up two notches to #6 - oh no, indeed... ;)
From the "Separation Anxiety" files: This week's chart saw "Yesterday's Songs" back-to-back with "The Old Songs", and both solo members of Fleetwood Mac back-to-back as well, yet neither pair shared the same segment (the latter, of course, having the show's original Extra between them).
Flipping that coin, we just saw back-to-back weeks with "I'm So Excited" in the countdown, now last week we had the original "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" as an Extra - this week, of course, we had Diana's remake.
Story behind "Light My Fire" as an Extra: Casey revealed that The Doors have been selling more records now than when they were together; among other reasons, a biography of The Doors triggered new interest in them.
Larry Morgan noted for Rick Springfield's extra that "I'd Do Everything For You" had fallen out this week.
Second LDD: For some years, Alan's day-to-day life was very much like in the song, as he would leave early in the morning to attend college, and go straight to work after that, not getting home until late - thus, his daughter didn't really know him for a while. One day on the way to work, "Cat's in the Cradle" came on the radio and really hit home for Alan, spurring him to spend as much time with his family as he could, which he was still doing at the time of the LDD.
#1 on the Album chart: 4 by Foreigner
#1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Groove"
#1 on the Country chart: "Bet Your Heart on Me" by Johnny Lee

NOTES:
OK...WCRZ started five minutes early, and started the second hour almost ten minutes early. Did they finish early? Nope - turns out they loaded up on commercials during the final hour, finishing just before midnight. Yay... Also, I missed the intro to #36, so if that's when Casey read the droppers, then yeah I missed that too (obviously, if that wasn't when he read them, then this is another week where they were missing completely).
I'll point out that this is the only week that we can hear "I Don't Mind at All".
It's funny...earlier this week I listened to a 1998 show where the first LDD was after #38; I made a note for that show that it was the second-earliest I'd ever heard a LDD in any show (after 12-27-86, where the first LDD is #38). Now - along comes this show! That said, despite being so early, after #38 was probably the perfect place to put it this week.
The beginning had an even pace, but once we were past the week's sole LDD, it's like the countdown went into fast-forward - this one moved so quickly, you'd think they rushed through it originally.
Speaking of which, a bit strange that this week only had the one LDD - the last Casey show this era to have three LDDs, is just four weeks back. (The last one in this era, period? Believe it or not, it's 6-24-89, the Debbie Gibson-hosted show.)
Story behind "Bette Davis Eyes" as an Extra: What else, but the woman the song is named for? Casey tells her story, and also points out that the song is the second-biggest hit of the 80s.
"Don't You Want Me" had a different mix played this week - possibly its single version? Also pretty sure this was played on at least one other week as well.
No softer jingle this week - not for "That's What Love is All About", not for "Brilliant Disguise", not for "Is This Love"...no one!
Lot of songs underlined this week (meaning we won't ever hear them any higher than this without listening to a guest-hosted show ourselves) - but, it's not the most in one week. That "honor" goes to 12-22-84 (which has six), mostly due to Charlie Van Dyke also hosting the first not one, but two weeks of 1985. (Same situation applies only two weeks after this one, actually, but as it turns out, that week only has four such songs in it.)
#1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack album to Dirty Dancing
#1 on the Dance chart: "Pump Up the Volume" by M/A/R/R/S
#1 on the Country chart: "The Last One to Know" by Reba McEntire
#1 on the Black Singles chart: "System of Survival" by Earth, Wind, & Fire
Also, I missed the intro to #36, so if that's when Casey read the droppers, then yeah I missed that too (obviously, if that wasn't when he read them, then this is another week where they were missing completely).
[/li][/quote]
Yes, Casey did list the droppers this week exactly at #36.
As he said...
We have three debuts this week on "American Top 40", and the three that fall out to make room are...
"Love Will Find A Way" by the group Yes (LW: #36) "Little Lies" by Fleetwood Mac (LW: #32) and "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister (LW: #30)
On a side note, it was the only 1987 show between November and December in which both the songs and performing acts were mentioned in the Droppers feature (no droppers were mentioned on 11/21; Charlie Van Dyke only mentioned the song titles when he subbed for Casey on 12/5).
ETA: And I now noticed WCRZ was missing the op extras. To Summarize...
"What Have I Done To Deserve This": Made the highest Hot 100 debut at #60 "Pop Goes The World": Was a week away from hitting the countdown
Nothing for "Everywhere" or "Tunnel Of Love" although Larry mentioned the former's follow-up "Little Lies" as having dropped out of the Top 40 and the latter was spending its' fourth week at #1 on the Rock chart.

NOTES:
Unlike last week, Casey did in fact forget to read the droppers this week.
There were a few Christmas-related stories, but as you can see, no Extras - same as the following week, actually. 1982 and 1987, I believe, are the only other 80s years like this, where their last shows of the year don't feature Christmas-related Extras.
"Never" had the single version played.
From the "Sign of the Times" files: Saginaw's Eisenhower High School, which Tom in the second LDD attends. Only two years later, the school would be severely damaged in an arson fire, prompting the school to merge with MacArthur High. This created Saginaw Heritage High School, which today operates where Eisenhower had.
We nearly had no softer jingle again this week - that is, until #2. I was going to mention that there were only seven ballads in this week's survey - but oddly enough, Casey would mention that there were six. (My guess is, "Goodbye" is the song he isn't counting there.) Interesting that "Broken Wings" would be the lone song to get that soft jingle this week, as oddly enough, it tended not to.

NOTES:
This week's Station of the Week: WGHN.
I'm opting to refrain from listing any large discrepancies with Billboard's own year-end positions this time around. Why's that? Well...Billboard's own survey period for 1980 was from 10-6-79 to 9-27-80! In other words, that's a large discrepancy all by itself - more than enough to cover any individual song placement discrepancies.
Actually...maybe just one. I do have to wonder how "Pilot of the Airwaves", with a peak of #13, would have missed AT40's year-end survey while ranking on Billboard's - up at #78, no less.
Casey states at the end that AT40's survey period covers November 1979 to November 1980.
Casey refers to Barry Manilow's streak of hitting the Top 40 with every release so far...if you remember from last year, in the following year's (1981) countdown, that was the year that ended.
It's worth noting that "(Just Like) Starting Over" hit #1 in the issue dated the same day this show originally aired (which is, obviously, therefore a missed chart). On that note, I was surprised to discover that that wasn't the year-end issue for Billboard that year - instead, 12-20 was.
As with the following year's survey, Part One is much more story-based than chart-based.
#1 Soul Song of the Year: "Let's Get Serious"
A footnote on that: Jermaine outranked his brother Michael ("Rock With You") on that chart by just a single notch.
Post by Michael1973 on Jan 1, 2015 22:03:42 GMT -5
I also noticed Casey's surprised remark that the Bee Gees didn't have a single hit in 1980. Little did anyone know they would only hit the year end chart one more time ever.
I also noticed Casey's surprised remark that the Bee Gees didn't have a single hit in 1980. Little did anyone know they would only hit the year end chart one more time ever.
And of course Andy Gibb barely scraped into the 1981 Top 100 with "Time Is Time" at #100. That was it for him then.
BTW the optional extras for this weekend's shows (just got back from work BTW).
1976 Hour #1: "Nadia's Theme (The Young & The Restless)" - Barry DeVorzon & Perry Botkin Jr. Hour #2: "Strange Magic" - Electric Light Orchestra Hour #3: "Happy Days" - Pratt & McClain Hour #4: Montage of #1 Hits of 1976
1980 Hour #1: "I'm Alive" - Electric Light Orchestra Hour #2: "Refugee" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Hour #3: "Any Way You Want It" - Journey Hour #4: "Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was A Fool)" - Foghat
Back to regular countdowns (I think anyway) next week.
Wishing AT40 could bring back Two-For-One

NOTES:
Another year-end countdown with no jingles in the first half, only to kick off Part Two with a "Number...50!"
Crazy how both The Eagles and Kim Carnes placed songs in the year-end survey back-to-back, while in both cases, neither pair had a segment to themselves. Also: The higher-peaking of the Eagles' two ranked higher, while the reverse happened for Kim.
Casey stated for "Cupid/I've Loved You For a Long Time" that that was the only medley in the Top 100 - methinks he neglected the other one still to come. ;)
"With You I'm Born Again" spent the most weeks on the Hot 100 of any song in 1980 - 29 weeks.
"Still" was the most requested song for LDDs this year.
Pretty impressive string of #1s up at the top - but, it's not a record: 1984 managed to start its final homestretch of only #1 songs one notch sooner.
The subtitle for the last extra comes from Larry Morgan reading its full title - though he proceeded to switch its numbers in his outro.
Much to my surprise, Part Two turned out to be more story-based than chart-based as well, though Casey did read off a list of statistics before #2.

NOTES:
Looks like the third time's the charm! This week's Flashback marks the third consecutive show where an artist had two songs back-to-back on the Hot 100. Two weeks ago it was Journey, last week it was Lionel Richie. However, when it came to AT40, Journey would have a LDD inbetween and Lionel would have a segment break inbetween. But the Stray Cats...no interruptions this time! Interesting that this happened with shows from consecutive years (albeit out of order).
"Dirty Laundry" was butchered at #3 - the second verse, instrumental break, and lyrics immediately following the break were all cut out (it went right from the first chorus to the background repeated chorus before he starts singing again). Yet when it was played in the Top 3 recap at the beginning, it wasn't shortened a bit. Why do I find this absolutely criminal? >:(
And go figure that WCRZ plays only the non-Top-40 flashback extra this week.

TWO QUESTIONS (Despite at this time no new Chicago station picking up AT40: The 70's or AT40: The 80's):
1) For AT40: The 70's: When is Premiere ever going to air another 4 hour 1979 episode on AT40: The 70's, there hasn't been one since September 2014, and I hope Premiere isn't planning to nix again the 4 hour October 1978-1979 AT40 episodes from the AT40: The 70's rotation!
2) For AT40: The 80's: Will Premiere air in September 2015 the September 1985 AT40 episode with the infamous "Dead Dog Long Distance Dedication" to tie in with its 30th. anniversary (If it does, it will be the third time Premiere has aired that AT40 episode which previously aired in 2007 and 2010)?
